It's time for Bizarre News for January 2025! We have four exciting and strange news stories for you this month.Story 1 - Bigfoot Sighting (Mansfield, Ohio): A man named Andrew Baum and his stepfather reported seeing a Sasquatch while setting up a tree stand on their farmland near Interstate 71 in December 2024. The BFRO (Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization) investigated and found the witness credible, though they questioned whether it might have been a human walking across the field rather than a Sasquatch.Story 2 - Alien Life Search Advancement: Scientists are increasingly optimistic about discovering extraterrestrial life due to technological advancements like the James Webb Space Telescope and the $100 million Breakthrough Listen project. Previous search efforts have been minimal (equivalent to scooping an 8-ounce glass from Earth's oceans), but new technology is expected to dramatically increase our ability to detect potential signs of life in space.Story 3 - Haunted Hotel for Sale (Ballinger, Texas): The Old Park Hotel, an 1886 two-story building known for paranormal activity including full-body apparitions and cold spots, is being put up for sale by its current owners Connie and Dan Lefebvre. The hotel, which has been featured on the Travel Channel, has attracted paranormal investigators from around the world, and the owners are seeking buyers who will continue operating it as a paranormal venue.Story 4 - Haunted Strathpeffer Pavilion (Scotland): A Victorian-era building in the Scottish Highlands has gained a reputation for being haunted, with reports of shadowy figures and unexplained phenomena. Recent paranormal investigators using specialized equipment like EMF detectors and spirit boxes claimed to have received clear responses through their devices, including being told to leave the balcony area.Want two more bonus news stories? My guest is Dan LeFebvre, host of Based on a True Story. Follow him on Twitter. Some of the topics we discussed: sE Electronics V7 microphone (See Bandrew’s review video: sE Electronics V7 Dynamic Mic Review / Test) RØDE boom arm Acoustic treatments in Dan's office: Moving blankets, carpet, ClearSonic baffles (6’ x 4’ foldable, free-standing panels) Zoom R16 Multi-Track Tabletop Recorder Squadcast iZotope RX 7 -- cleanup, de-reverb, etc. Mixcraft DAW iZotope Nectar - automatic EQ Adobe Audition Resampling Private RSS feed WordPress site RSS plugin Here is Dan describing his post-production workflow: After an episode is recorded, I edit it on my primary desktop. I have a folder structure that I've built over the years with templates for each step of the process. This gives me the Mixcraft project templates I need but also gives me backups of each step so I can always go back to any step later if I need to (and I've needed to a few times). Step 1 is to do generate the WAV files that I'll use to edit. I do this so I'm not editing the original audio that I recorded (again, backup everything) but also because sometimes I get multiple files that I need to cut together. For example, I recently had SquadCast cut out part-way through so I had to use my local DAW recording for a sentence or so when my guest was still talking and he didn't realize SquadCast had dropped me. In this first step, the outcome is a single audio track for my guest and myself. Step 2 is to do the core of the editing. This starts by pulling each track as its own WAV into iZotope RX to do any cleanup necessary. If I'm using SquadCast, I'll also resample the 44100 kHz WAV file from there to 48000 kHz to better conform to the rest of the audio that I record at 48000 (since I do some video with my podcast). Then, back in Mixcraft, it's to the most time consuming process all podcast editors are familiar with...going through and removing the stutters, excessive "uhs" and "ums" and so on. Step 3 is to write and record my intro & outro. I do this after editing the episode primarily because I do a "two truths and a lie" segment that requires pulling info from the episode, so it's easier for me to do that after I've edited it and it's still fresh in my mind. Step 4 is to edit the intro & outro onto the bulk of the episode. Step 5 is to add the simple intro music, my FX chains and then export a single WAV file for each track. Typically this is one WAV file for me, one for my guest and one for the music track. Step 6 is to pull those WAV files into a multitrack session in Audition where I do a match loudness. I was excited to see RX 8 has a loudness control module...but I'm not sure it's worth the cost of the upgrade yet just for that hah! So, I do that in Audition. Coming out of Audition, I mix it all down to a single WAV file. Step 7 is to take that WAV file and resample it from the 48000 kHz that I record in (because I do some video for my podcast) to 44100 kHz to export the final MP3 at 96kbps. Last, but not least, I have a private RSS feed that I set up to give the episode a listen. Every so often some family members who have access to the RSS feed will help out and give it a listen and let me know if they notice any mistakes. If so, I go back to whatever step is needed to fix it. Thanks for being a great guest and sharing so much with us, Dan! Comment below with any questions or comments.

Brian from New Zealand and Dan LeFebvre from Based on a True Story podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Brian’s choice Hereditary. Hereditary is Ari Aster’s horror tragedy directorial debut starring Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff, and Milly Shapiro. After the death of her secretive and creepy mother, miniatures artist Annie (Collette) attends an open support group and tells the group about her mother's overbearing relationship with her equally creepy daughter Charlie (Shapiro). Her son Peter (Wolff) is reluctant to take his creepy sister to a party but gives in to his mother's pressure and while at the party Charlie suffers an allergic reaction. When driving at speed to take Charlie to the hospital in a freak turn of events Peter is responsible for decapitating Charlie. The death of Charlie sends Annie further into grief and leads her to Joan who sets up a seance to communicate with Charlie. Through further investigation of her mother's belongings and history, Annie reveals a history of spells, the occult, and a plan to bring the spirit King Paimon to life with three headless sacrifices. Scores [supsystic-tables id=184] Not for the fainthearted, Hereditary is part an exploration through family grief and part supernatural thriller with some inventive decapitations and jump scares. Ambitious and richly detailed, Hereditary definitely rewards on the rewatch, if you can get through the first watch. The scores for Hereditary on recommendability are mixed and more favorable from Brian and Helen generally to give an overall score of 3.37. What do you guys think? Have you seen Hereditary? Set during World War 2 it tells an alternate history story of two plots to assassinate Nazi leaders - one by a French Jewish cinema owner (Laurent) whose family were murdered by Hans Landa (Waltz) and the second by a group American Jewish soldiers led by Aldo Raine (Pitt) who instill fear into Nazis for their reputation of scalping Nazi officers that cross their paths. Inglourious Basterds has everything you’d expect from a Tarantino film - violence (often and bloody), chapters, borrowing from popular culture, pop soundtrack, meticulous dialogue, and black humour Scores [supsystic-tables id=174] Inglourious Basterds scores strongly across recommendability and engagement - dropping points on repeat viewing in part due to its two hour and 33 minute run time - to score overall a respectable 3.8. What do you guys think? Have you seen Inglourious Basterds? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below! There are some musicians that leave an enduring legacy through long and storied careers, like the Rolling Stones, who formed in 1962 and swear 2018 for be their final year touring, for real this time. There are actors who are iconic because they have been on our TV’s or the silver screen for decades, like Sean Connery, James Earl Jones, and our beloved Betty White. But by the same token, there are musicians, actors, and shows that are like a stone dropped in a pond -- their appearance was brief, but their ripples continue to this day.
