In this episode, I'm joined by executive coach Candace P. Jones to delve into the pervasive issue of the "workhorse mentality" that many Black and Brown women experience in corporate America. We explore the historical context of this phenomenon, tracing its roots to the devaluation of Black labor, and discuss how it continues to manifest in today's workplaces. Candace and I unpack the damaging consequences of this mentality, not only for individuals but also for their families and communities. We challenge the notion that overwork is the sole path to success and emphasize the importance of strategic thinking, relationship building, and self-advocacy. Key takeaways: The historical context of the "workhorse mentality" and its impact on Black and Brown women. The importance of recognizing and challenging the belief that overwork is necessary for advancement. The need to prioritize well-being and set boundaries. The power of self-advocacy and reclaiming space in the workplace. The importance of community and connection in navigating these challenges. This episode lays the foundation for a crucial conversation on how to break free from the workhorse mentality and create a more sustainable and fulfilling career. Stay tuned for part 2! In this powerful second part of my conversation with communications expert Jerry Jerome, we delve deeper into the complexities of "Performing Professionalism" as Black and Brown professionals. We unpack the challenges of navigating corporate spaces that often demand we "subtract" from ourselves to "add" to the environment. Jerry challenges us to question whose imagination we're living in and encourages us to draw inspiration from those who truly have our best interests at heart. We discuss the importance of assessing our individual situations, understanding our value, and recognizing that money is a tool we can leverage to create our own opportunities. Key takeaways: The importance of self-reflection and understanding your value beyond your job title. Challenging the false narrative of the American meritocracy. Recognizing that corporate America is a game and learning how to play it strategically. The power of humility and the importance of sharing knowledge and opportunities with others. Understanding that money is a tool, not a definition of value. Jerry's wisdom transcends his years, reminding us that we are all capable of defining our own success and creating a life that aligns with our authentic selves.
