We welcomed Andy Kirkpatrick onto the show this week to talk all things big wall, winter expeditions and doing things the hard way. It's safe to say that Andy has made his way through life so far by pushing himself and deliberately pitting himself against his own barriers. From a young age he learned to climb and handle himself in the outdoors and progressed from there, teaching himself the ropework skills he would need to climb big walls like El Capitan. Since then Andy has become a well-known and award winning British climber, writer and speaker. This episode is a little bit different to usual but we really hope that you enjoy it, Andy has done a lot to talk about in his life and this only really covers the tip of the iceberg.Useful info: Chossy means loose, unstable, soft or very overgrown rock which can't really be trusted.LinksHamish Hamilton Whisperlite stove Andy's instagram Andy's website DiscordOur InstagramPatreon
The US magazine Climbing once described Andy as a climber with a “strange penchant for the long, the cold and the difficult”, with a reputation “for seeking out routes where the danger is real, and the return is questionable, pushing himself on some of the hardest walls and faces in the Alps and beyond, sometimes with partners and sometimes alone. Andy's speciality is big wall climbing and winter expeditions, which involves pitting himself against vertical climbs of over 1000 metres (that's two and a half world trade centres), often in temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees. Andy has scaled Yosemite's El Capitan - one of the hardest walls in America - over twenty-four times, including three solo ascents and a one-day ascent (18h), as well as climbing it with a paraplegic climber, his thirteen-year-old daughter and a blind friend. One of these ascents was a 12 day solo of the Reticent Wall, viewed at the time as perhaps the hardest climb of its type in the world, and the subject of his award-winning book Psychovertical. Our first civilian guest on the podcast is Andy Kirkpatrick. Described by John Humphreys as the Ranulph Fiennes of British climbing. He's a professional mountaineer, award-winning writer, film maker and host of the Psychovertical podcast. Andy has climbed all over the world but is viewed as an expert in big wall climbing having summited El Capitan over 30 times including 5 solo ascents and two one day ascents. Andy was kind enough to email and tell us he enjoyed the pod and it got us thinking how much small unit, dismounted soldiering and climbing had in common. Both involve highly trained individuals capable of operating equally well on their own or as part of a team. There is also the need for focused training, the honing of skills, an obsession with gear, great photos in inaccessible parts of the world and the discomfort of wet/dry drills before getting in or out of a sleeping bag. We finish with Andy's book choice on Desert Island dits About Face by David Hackworth. His film choice is Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. The teams book choices this episode are Picking Up The Brass by Eddie Nugent and Serpico by Peter Maas. Follow us on social media and don't forget to like, follow, share and leave a review. He joined the Department of Surgery at the University of Manitoba in 2010 as an assistant professor and currently practices as an Acute Care/Trauma Surgeon and Intensivist. Research Focus Dr. Gillman’s research interests include point of care ultrasound, surgical education and crisis simulation. Specifically he is focusing on improving training in point of care ultrasound including redeveloping the credentialing process for the FAST (Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma) examination. Other work in this area focuses on validating the use of ultrasound to measure the optic nerve sheath diameter as a non-invasive way to predict intracranial pressure. On the surgical education side, he is working on developing a novel video game platform utilizing an endoscope as a controller to teach early endoscopy skills. Finally, Dr. Gillman is co-founder of the S.T.A.R.T.T. (Standardized Trauma and Resuscitation Team Training) Course, a national trauma crisis simulation course, and is working on developing and improving the course curriculum.

'Even the most casual reader among you will by now have worked out that the whole thing is little more than a delightful ruse for having a very good time.'Experienced climber Charles Sherwood is on a quest to find the best climb on each continent. He eschews the traditional Seven Summits, where height alone is the determining factor, and instead considers mountaineering challenge, natural beauty and historical context, aiming to capture the diverse character of each continent and the sheer variety of climbing in all its forms. The author's ambitious odyssey takes him to the Alps, the Himalaya, Yosemite, the Andes, Kenya, New Zealand and South Georgia. His goal is neither to seek glory nor to complete a box-ticking exercise, but simply to enjoy himself in the company of his fellow climbers, including Mark Seaton, Andy Kirkpatrick and Stephen Venables, and to appreciate the splendour of his surroundings. On classic routes like the North Face of the Eiger and the Nose on El Capitan, it is hard not to be swept away by Sherwood's unfaltering enthusiasm. Also featuring fascinating historical detail about each route, Seven Climbs is a compelling account of Sherwood's efforts to answer a much-debated question: which are the world’s greatest climbs?Coming soon as an ebook (Kindle UK, Kindle US, Kobo, iTunes and Google Play)

Pete is one half of the Wide Boyz duo, crack climber extraordinaire and now, author. He’s taken a brief break in signing pre-ordered copies of his first book, Crack Climbing, to answer some quick-fire questions from his Instagram followers. Our plan for Jerry Moffatt to put Pete under the spotlight was foiled by the challenge of co-ordinating the diaries of two of the best climbers in the world today, so you’ll have to settle for me as the voice of Instagram instead.Pete has just returned from a stint out in Yosemite where he completed seven walls in seven days with fellow climber Sean Warren. Each wall needed to be completed in under ten hours to allow them enough rest between climbs. You’ll be glad to know they achieved their goals, scaling El Cap’s Lurking Fear in nine hours, Leaning Tower’s West Face in five hours, Mount Watkins’ South Face in seven and a half hours, Washington Column’s 10 Days After in eight and a half hours, Half Dome’s Regular North-West Face in six and a half hours, Liberty Cap’s South-West Face in six hours and finally Lost Arrow Spire in seven hours fifty mins. Somehow in between his big week in Yosemite and heading up to Kendal Mountain Festival Pete managed to sign over 700 pre-ordered copies of his first book, Crack Climbing, and squeeze in this fun Q&A filled with questions from his followers on Instagram. If you’re keen to improve your climbing you can head over to our website (v-publishing.co.uk) to order yourself a copy of Crack Climbing; and if you’re really up for expanding your climbing repertoire by opting for our 3 for 2 bundle offer, which features Pete’s book as well as 1001 Climbing Tips by Andy Kirkpatrick and Mastermind by Jerry Moffatt, you’ll be scaling El Cap yourself before long.If you’ve got any feedback on the podcast, or suggestions for topics to cover or people you’d like to hear from please drop me an email at rae@v-publishing.co.uk Our next episode comes out in a fortnight (our last one before Christmas on 12 December) where I’m chatting with Suzanna Cruickshank about her upcoming book, Swimming Wild in the Lake District. Andy mixes stories about life and climbs, one minute terrifying, the next hilarious, a style described by the Banff film festival as “Turning tales of near-death into philosophical and comic scenarios worthy of Samuel Beckett, or Monty Python.”Andy has a reputation for seeking out routes where the danger is real, and the return is questionable, pushing himself on some of the hardest walls and faces in the Alps and beyond, although personally, he prefers Metro's tag that he “makes Ray Mears look like Paris Hilton”.Whether he's telling a story about a 12 day solo of the hardest climb on the planet, a month-long crossing of Greenland with his paraplegic girlfriend or saving Johnny Depp on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, rest assured you won't have heard anything quite like it.—Recorded live at the global event in Cardigan, west Wales in 2008.Watch Andy's full talk here: www.thedolectures.com/talks/andy-kirkpatrick-climb-your-own-mountain

It's the life we're told we want, where we just shout at a device and our needs are met as quickly as the supply chain allows. Aleks Krotoski explores frictionless digital living. But is there value in friction? Aleks hears from someone who's life depends on it, mountaineer Andy Kirkpatrick. He has a reputation for stacking the odds against himself as much as possible; long routes, often climbed alone in the worst of conditions. Back on the ground Andy also needs friction to not get complacent, accept others views without question, to keep moving forward. Without friction we risk falling prey to what economist Umair Haque describes as the infantilisation economy. One where we are diminished by being able to have our every need met by Amazon's Alexa. And the cost isn't just to us but also to the army of digital serfs peddling about in all weathers with those trademark boxes on their backs. Its a future that was foreseen as far back as the late 19th century by the likes of Nietzsche in his descriptions of the 'last men' a humanity living the most vanilla of existences without challenge or ambition to change. Nothing sums this up better than the food replacement industry. No time to shop, cook, chew? Get everything you need nutritionally in a drink like Soylent or Huel - all in the name of efficiency. Its a world that fascinates anthropologist Jan English-Luek who for over 20 years has been observing trends in silicon valley. Ultimately Aleks will ask what we're saving all this time and effort for and do we ever reap the benefits? Or does it just keep us where the digital world wants us, consuming in ever more efficient ways. Producer: Peter McManus.
Multi-award-winning outdoor film maker Jen Randall discusses the creative process involved in making her films such as Operation Moffat, The Bothy Project and Project Mina, as well as her next venture, working with Andy Kirkpatrick on the film versuion of his autobiography, Psychovertical.
Andy Kirkpatrick is a British mountaineer, author, speaker, and comedian at times. Some of his more notable climbs include the Reticent Wall on El Cap, the first winter ascent on the Troll Wall, and the South Ridge of Ultevanna in Antarctica. He is the author of Psychovertical and Cold Wars, which both won the Boardman Tasker award for climbing literature in 2008 and 2012 respectively.
Andy Kirkpatrick - acclaimed mountaineer, author and stand-up - challenges us to let our children be exposed to greater risk. He argues that we shouldn't be wrapping up children in cotton wool, that children will naturally seek out risky, challenging, scary experiences and that by over protecting them we might just be encouraging them to seek out much more dangerous situations. Using a terrifying mountain climb he did with his young daughter as an example, Andy argues that if we're brave enough to allow our children to experienced managed risk they'll enter adulthood better prepared for life's challenges.
