Send us a textIn this episode of FedBiz'5, host Bobby Testa dives into one of the biggest shifts in government contracting: the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in federal procurement. With more than 200 active AI use cases across federal agencies—from the DoD's Project Maven to the IRS's chatbot—AI is no longer emerging. It's operational, funded, and rapidly expanding.Bobby breaks down five critical insights government contractors need to understand right now if they want to stay ahead in this evolving space. This episode isn't about theory—it's about real agency usage, real budgets, real compliance expectations, and real market strategies that help small to mid-sized contractors show up and compete. You'll learn:How AI is currently being used across federal agenciesWhere AI-related opportunities are growing (hint: DoD, VA, NIH)What regulatory expectations you need to prepare for (yes, FAR clauses are coming)How to position your AI capabilities in SAM.gov, DSBS, and capability statementsWhy early outreach—RFIs, Industry Days, OSDBUs, and teaming—is more important than everWhether your company offers AI tools, supports infrastructure, provides training, or consults on ethical compliance, this episode will show you how to align with what agencies are actually buying. We also explore how tools like FedBiz365 can uncover pre-solicitation activity, highlight AI-related trends, and help you build a smart, targeted strategy based on real data—not guesswork. And of course, Bobby keeps it real (and funny) as always, because what's a discussion about AI and federal procurement without a little commentary on IRS hold music, fantasy football algorithms, and black-box buzzwords?

BIM Heroes Ep. 17: The State of Lean with Adam HootsIn Episode 17 of the BIM Heroes podcast, Cody sits down with Adam Hoots, a lean coach and passionate builder, to talk about what's working (and what's not) in construction today. From contracts and culture to technology and trust, this episode digs deep into why so many projects struggle and what it takes to do things better.Chasing the “Best Deal” Can Cost More in the EndAdam doesn't hold back on the topic of lump sum contracts. While they might sound like a safe financial choice, they often lead to a flood of change orders and, in the end, a higher cost. Even worse, they break down trust and collaboration. When contractors are brought in early and treated like partners, projects run smoother and usually end up cheaper and better. Our Contracts Are Built for Conflict, Not CollaborationToo many construction contracts are written with a focus on risk and dispute resolution. Words like “conflict” and “claim” show up far more than “partnership” or “trust.” According to Adam, this mindset sets teams up for failure before the project even begins. Instead, teams should be aligned around what a successful project feels like from the start, having clear, shared expectations and open conversations from day one.Tech Isn't the Answer. Unless It Helps in the FieldThere's no shortage of construction software out there, but that's part of the problem. Many tools add complexity without solving real problems. Adam's rule is simple: if the tech doesn't help crews put more work in place, it's a waste. But when used well, like 4D scheduling or smart procurement tools, it can support better planning, clearer communication, and safer job sites.4D Over CPM: Seeing Is BelievingTraditional CPM schedules are too long, too complex, and too disconnected from the reality of site work. Adam prefers tools like takt planning and the Last Planner System, which help teams work in smaller batches, reduce bottlenecks, and keep production flowing. And when schedules are paired with 4D visuals, the entire team can see what's happening. And that changes everything.Designers Are Under Pressure, and It ShowsSoftware has sped up design work, but it's also created a reliance on copy-paste templates and typical details. This overproduction leads to defects, rework, and wasted time. Adam points out that designers are often stretched too thin, asked to juggle too many projects because the software “makes it faster.” The result? Important project-specific details get missed, which hurts everyone down the line.Don't Forget the People Doing the WorkAdam makes a strong case for treating the folks on the ground (the trades, the project engineers, the interns) as the most important part of the process. Too often, new engineers are thrown into critical tasks like RFIs and submittals with little guidance, while leadership distances itself. Instead, leaders should be front and center, setting the tone, building trust, and making people feel valued from day one.The Future of Lean Is All About Systems and TrustLooking ahead, Adam believes lean will become more focused on systems thinking, seeing how one part of the job affects everything else. It's about shifting from siloed teams to interconnected ones that understand how to work together effectively. His work is focused on something he calls the “Trust Circle,” which helps teams build transparency, call out issues early, and recognize the people who consistently show up and do the right thing. The goal isn't just to build faster or cheaper. It's to create healthier, more honest, and more sustainable project environments. And that starts by listening to the people doing the work and building around their needs.

For example, let us say you get 60 requests. You do not have an equal chance to win any of the sixty messages. Do you assign the same amount of time to each one? Do you review each and rank the chances of success? What about the time you used in the ranking process? Remember, you could jeopardize your chances of winning if you do not respond promptly. Deep Water Point & Associates offers one solution to this dilemma. During the interview, Brian Seagraves describes a system called “North Star” that leverages AI to look at an opportunity and give it a grade for your specific company. A ranking of 0—100 means you will not waste time or effort on a proposal that will go nowhere. As a “proof of concept,” John Milward from Axxa painted a picture of a solution. In 2023, he was drowning in responding to opportunities. He started using the North Star system and has experienced drastic improvement. Brian Seagraves reminds the audience that the federal government still awards contracts and sends out RFPs. During stressful times, it is always best to keep a cheerful outlook and increase the number of opportunities for your company.

382. Matterport + SIMLAB STAGES + Procore for Construction Communication

WGAN Forum Podcast

Hi there, I am the digital twin of Dan Smigrod, Founder and Managing Editor of the We Get Around Network Forum and host of WGAN-TV Podcast. Procore plays a pivotal role in enhancing the functionality of Matterport digital twins -- integrated with SIMLAB STAGES -- by transforming construction coordination and communication with punch list items, for example, mapped exactly where they exist in a digital twin. Let's dive into one of the biggest challenges in construction management—coordination. Whether it's tracking issues or just keeping everyone on the same page, it's a lot. Now, imagine this: you've got your Procore data—Punch Items, RFIs, project documents — all embedded right in either a Matterport or a NavVis digital twin. That's exactly what SIMLAB STAGES does. Instead of jumping between platforms and scrolling through endless lists, you're seeing these issues in real time, within the actual space they affect. For instance, let's say there's a Punch Item tied to a specific room in a building. With SIMLAB STAGES, that item isn't just a line in a spreadsheet. It's mapped to its precise location, visually, in the Matterport (or NavVis) model. You click. You see instantly. You know what's going on without guessing or piecing it together manually. This kind of spatial understanding—it's huge. It takes something that could be abstract or buried in documents and makes it clear, tangible. And that's not all. Procore documents—images, reports, supporting files — are pulled straight into SIMLAB STAGES. No switching apps. No downloading or loading files. It's right there. This seamless integration doesn't just save time. It builds a much stronger connection between team members. When everyone's looking at the exact same data, at the same time, in the same context, decision-making becomes so much faster, and more reliable. There's less back and forth. Fewer errors. The whole workflow just clicks. And that's really the game-changer here. SIMLAB STAGES isn't just tacking on Procore. It's making it an intuitive, interactive part of the way you work. Now, let's talk about how this 3D digital twin visualization capability and real-time syncing actually redefine issue tracking. It's one thing to have a list of Punch Items or RFIs — great, a list—but it's another to see those listed items mapped exactly where they exist in a digital twin. That's what SIMLAB STAGES offers. It's issue tracking on Steroids. Think about this: instead of someone reading a description and guessing, "Okay, I think this issue is in the third-floor hallway, with SIMLAB STAGES, you're literally seeing it in a 3D space. The issue isn't hypothetical anymore. It's there — visually represented: down to its precise location. And that means less confusion, fewer follow-ups, and way more efficiency. What's even cooler? When you update something in SIMLAB STAGES—let's say you resolve an RFI or assign it: boom, it's automatically synced back into Procore. And it works the other way too. That's bi-directional syncing, and it's a game-changer. Everything stays aligned. No lag. No redundant updates. No manual cross-checking. The result? Real-time communication that pulls everyone — whether they're on-site or remote — onto the same page. Whether it's your subcontractors, your project managers, or your clients, everyone's collaborating off the same, up-to-the-minute info in the exact same context. It's real-time alignment at its best. And this visibility does more than just save time; it eliminates the missteps that happen when teams are stuck trying to interpret disconnected data. You can make decisions faster because, well, everything you need is right there in front of you — clearly. No communication gaps to slow things down. So, by embedding Procore's robust data into a Matterport or NavVis interactive 3D space, SIMLAB STAGES takes issue tracking from being reactive to being proactive — which is a seismic shift in how construction teams collaborate and deliver their projects. Now, let's dig into how centralizing project documentation in SIMLAB STAGES doesn't just make your life easier — it actually helps reduce errors in a big way. Here's the thing. When you've got everything — Punch Items, RFIs, documents — all mapped visually into a 3D environment, you're removing a ton of the guesswork. You're making sure everyone's on the same page, not just metaphorically but literally. It's there in front of them, tied to the exact location in the project to help avoid confusion. The impact of this? It's not theoretical. Construction teams can cut down rework by a massive percentage. Why? Because the documentation is accurate from the start. Punch Items are not sitting in some disconnected spreadsheet; they are right there in the Matterport digital twin or in a NavVis digital twin. So, there isn't a need for back-and-forth, trying to figure out, "Wait, which wall was this issue on, again?" By embedding this process into SIMLAB STAGES and syncing it with Procore, every move can be made with well-informed and spatially precise info. No double-checking, no fixing errors caused by miscommunication. You can just look, decide, and act—all in one sweep. That's powerful. And for today's construction teams, tools like SIMLAB STAGES are becoming less of a "nice-to-have" and more of a need. It's tackling inefficiencies that have been treated as just part of the business for far too long. Imagine what this kind of clarity and precision can do not just for one site but for an entire portfolio of projects. That's next-level construction management. So, see fewer errors, stronger collaboration, and a lot less stress for everyone involved. And to me, that's the real value here. It's taking something as complex as construction project management and making it not only simpler but smarter. And that's, well, a game-changer. On that note, we're gonna wrap it up. Debi Durham, the Director of the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) and the Iowa Finance Authority (IFA) joins Dennis to discuss the role of a state economic development director.  Fifteen years ago, what was the state of economic development? Fast forward 15 years, and how has economic development changed? Through two main divisions – business development and community development the IEDA administers almost 50 state and federal programs to assist individuals, communities, and businesses. That is a lot of plates to spin at one time. How big is the IEDA team? As a state, does Iowa target specific sectors for projects? Every state has advantages and disadvantages. How do you work to sell the sizzle for Iowa? How competitive are projects between the states? At the local level, we are used to projects from the state, utility, or rail partners. How do projects flow to the IEDA? Let's talk about the changes in the economic development landscape for projects, starting with the rise of certified sites. Incentives are always a controversial topic. How have incentives changed during your tenure, and what are your views on incentives? What advice for frontline economic development professionals do you have when competing for projects or existing industry expansions? What do you wish every economic development professional knew about when responding to RFIs? Debi, look into your crystal ball. What do you think economic development will look like in 10 years? Debi Durham Debi Durham is a longtime economic and community development professional who serves as Director of the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) and the Iowa Finance Authority (IFA). Durham was named to the positions by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds in January 2019. Durham was first appointed to lead IEDA in 2011, and during her eight-year tenure, has turned the agency into a successful public-private partnership, landed billion-dollar economic development projects for Iowa and worked tirelessly on expanding trade and investment opportunities for the state. She prides herself on building coalitions, supporting new ventures and strengthening the state's industries and communities. Prior to joining IEDA, Durham served as president of the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce. Her several accolades include being recognized as one of the "Most Influential Business Leaders" in the 2019 Des Moines Business Record Book of Lists and receiving the Technology Association of Iowa's "Legislative Advocacy Leader" award in 2017. Durham also was recognized by the Business Record as a "Woman of Influence" in 2016. In this episode, I talk about the contracting process for acquisitions in the federal government and its importance. I explained the process including a planning phase, market research phase, and others. The government's market research phase can be identified by the publication of sources sought notices and RFIs. It's important to emphasize the importance of understanding the process and knowing the phase in order to correctly interpret and respond to opportunities for work with the government. I also talk about the Defense Acquisition University, which trains contracting officers. Tune in to this episode, to learn more.

Claude Baudoin, co-chair of several OMG task forces, including the AI Platform Task Force, discussed the timeliness of AI standards. He highlighted the need for standards to address interoperability and portability issues in AI, citing examples like the portability of neural network models and standardization of image classifiers. Baudoin emphasized OMG's open process for determining standards through RFIs, contrasting it with ISO's more guideline-focused approach. He encouraged active participation in OMG to shape standards, offering a competitive advantage in the market. OMG's efforts aim to provide concrete, technical standards, unlike ISO's general advice. Action Items [ ] Issue a request for information to determine needed AI standards. [ ] Get involved in OMG's standards development process by becoming a member and attending meetings. Outline Introduction and Participant Roles Karen Quatromoni introduces herself as the Director of Public Relations for Object Management Group (OMG) and welcomes Bill Hoffman, the OMG CEO and chairman. Claude Baudoin introduces himself as the owner and principal at cebe IT and Knowledge Management, based in San Rafael, California. Claude mentions his extensive background in software engineering, IT management, and his long association with OMG, including his roles in various task forces and working groups. The focus of the podcast is on AI standards, and Claude is co-chairing the AI Platform Task Force for OMG. Timing of AI Standards Bill Hoffman discusses the rapid evolution of AI and the timeliness of discussing AI standards. Claude shares an anecdote from 1993 about the premature standardization debate and how it eventually led to the development of the Unified Modeling Language (UML). The fundamental issue is that lack of standards can lead to significant time wasted on interoperability and portability issues, hindering innovation. The goal is to identify when standards are needed to allow developers to focus more on innovation rather than technical challenges. Examples of AI Standards Needed Claude explains the current work on portability of neural network models with the help of Zephyr Solutions. The challenge is that neural network models cannot be easily moved from one platform to another due to the lack of a standard representation. Another area of interest is image classifiers, where there is a need for a standard to handle large datasets and descriptions of images. Other potential standards include metadata for data sets and semantic tagging of information, which are widely needed. Determining AI Standards Bill asks how OMG determines which AI standards are needed. OMG has an open process that involves issuing requests for information (RFIs) to gather input from the general public, not just OMG members. In 2019, NIST issued an RFI, but it was five years old and did not address the current landscape, including the rise of large language models. OMG is considering issuing a new RFI to gather more up-to-date input on needed standards. OMG's Approach to AI Standards Bill inquires about how OMG's efforts differ from other organizations like ISO and IEEE. ISO's standards are more like guidelines, while OMG focuses on more precise, technically detailed standards. OMG collaborates with ISO and IEEE, feeding specifications to ISO and having a liaison with IEEE's project group on AI terminology and data formats. OMG's work is more concrete and provides specific models and formats for users and developers. Getting Involved in OMG ...
