This post was inspired by a conversation I had with Tom Goodwin that started on Twitter and which he expanded on LinkedIn. He gave me permission to base this podcast episode on these posts. I often think a lot about how lucky I am to have started my career with 25 ish years of in-office/store work, passive training, oversight, exposure via proximity, and camaraderie . This is by no means an anti-remote work thing, it's just an honest reflection on the head start being in a packed workplace from the age of 17 onwards. Something not everyone now gets. And yes I was lucky to feel like I (nearly) always worked at places that were high energy, that were dominated by quite supportive people, that I had great bosses, that had pretty motivated people, varied work, and the long hours were rewarding. But it wasn't 100% luck, it was a concerted effort to pick places on the basis of how I'd develop, not what I'd get paid. And I'm not suggesting companies should resort to 100% in person work, but I do think they should focus on creating environments where people feel a part of something, and supported. On Twitter, I told him that I was not fortunate to have that type of supportive work environment - I had monitoring, close surveillance, mandatory training and micromanagement. Tom asked me something which stopped me short. "Why didn't you leave?" The short answer I gave was kids, a mortgage and stability. But it's deeper than that. The choices and decisions I made about the companies I worked for and the jobs I accepted are rooted in my childhood perception of stability and responsibility, where I lived, the kind of daughter, parent and wife I wanted to be, the economic climate, golden handcuffs including access to work from home which was not common at the time and systematic limitations. Condensing 30 years of decisions and history into less than15 minutes is a challenging task. Hopefully you find it interesting to view my career from a high level perspective. I used Microsoft Co-pilot to summarize valuable lessons others could learn from my story and I kind of like the output. It feels a bit like a personal cheerleader who can see the positives peeking throught the details. Here are some valuable lessons that others can learn from your story: Resilience and Adaptability: Life is full of unexpected challenges, from economic downturns to personal losses. Your ability to adapt and bounce back is crucial. Lesson: Cultivate resilience and embrace change as an opportunity for growth. Navigating Career Transitions: Job markets fluctuate, and qualifications alone may not guarantee success. Your experience transitioning between industries highlights this. Lesson: Be open to learning new skills and consider transferable abilities when changing careers. Advocacy and Impact: Your advocacy for hybrid remote work made a difference. You were a pioneer in promoting flexible work arrangements. Lesson: Advocate for positive changes in your workplace or industry, even if it challenges the status quo. Mindset Matters: Mindsets shape our experiences. Facing layoffs and industry shifts, maintaining a positive outlook is essential. Lesson: Cultivate a growth mindset, stay adaptable, and view setbacks as opportunities for learning. Balancing Personal and Professional Life: Juggling personal challenges alongside work can be tough. Your story underscores the importance of balance. Lesson: Prioritize self-care, seek support, and recognize that life events impact professional performance. Unique Paths to Success: No two journeys are alike. Your unconventional path—through recessions, accidents, and losses—led you to where you are today. Lesson: Embrace your unique journey, celebrate achievements, and learn from setbacks.
Visit us at shapedbydog.com What if I told you that the secret to unlocking your dog's success lies within the walls of your own home? I've been using a training den for many years, and so have my students. I'm covering how to use a training den to fast track your dog's success and confidence, what I keep in my training den, and why it creates a bond with dogs and helps them love training. The good feelings you create for your dog in your training den transfer to the training, which transfers to you, and you can generalize that to other places. And don't worry if you don't have much space; everyone can create an environment for learning success. In this episode you'll hear: • About the importance of identifying ideal training environments for dogs. • The goal of training sessions: build and maintain confidence while we build and maintain behavior. • Why we need to tailor the training environment to the dog's age and stage. • Where and how to create a dedicated training area or "training den" in your home. • The benefits of the training den in controlling distractions and building positive associations. • Why Positive Conditioned Emotional Responses (CERs) are vital in dog training. • What to include in the training den, and what I have in mine. • Tips on choosing the right flooring for the training area. • How training dens set dogs and people up for success and the value transfers. No long are we driven by worldly attainment of success but by the realisation of self. Life isn't about what we do with our body. It's about who we being. We're not here to say do things in order to be happy but to be happy while we are doing things.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: EA's success no one cares about, published by Jakub Stencel on June 24, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Status While this is part of EA Strategy Fortnight, my intention is to focus more on what effective altruism did well, rather than what it should do. At the same time, my hope would be that the post provides the community with at least some valuable context to the discussions about the path forward. This post will be very subjective and a lot less thought-through than what I am usually comfortable sharing, although built on ~13 years of experience in the field. Some details may be off, for example by memory distortion or indirect testimonies. Nevertheless, it's truthful to my internal models – when I walk and talk to my dog about this kind of stuff, you can expect my mind to go in the same direction as this post. Context Recently, there has been a lot of attention directed at effective altruism. Some was external, but, from my perspective, most of it came from within the movement. My interpretation was that at least a portion of it was built on feelings of anxiety, doubt, and maybe some anger or fear. Of course, a lot of concerns seemed to me legitimized by what was happening or what we were discovering. In some way, I was worried about the community I identify as part of, but at the same time, there was this feeling of appreciation that we can go together through a crisis. It's a lesson for a young movement, and experience is invaluable. Just like it's better to learn hard lessons about life as a teenager than an adult, of course ideally with not much harm involved. The energy spent on inward focus felt encouraging, even though I disagreed with a chunk of the opinions. After all, some of the values of effective altruism I'm the most optimistic about are openness to criticism, intellectual humility, and truth-seeking. But the more external and internal takes I was reading, the more something seemed off. Something was missing. It felt one-sided. There was almost no mention of successes and wins – some appreciation of what this very young and weird movement managed to achieve in such a short period of time. Maybe I shouldn't expect this in adversarial pieces about EA, and maybe it was implied when people were making criticism internally, but it still didn't feel fully right to me. It felt like we all take effective altruism for granted. There was not much gratitude in the air. Maybe one can argue that EA hasn't done much. While I have my strong intuitions on the counterfactual impact of EA in many areas, in the end I don't feel fully qualified here, so I would prefer to defer. Yet, I'm confident that there is at least one success we should celebrate, and it's very much absent from the discourse – making historical progress for animals. Animal advocate's lens on effective altruism This is my take on the short path of effective altruism's impact on animals. Please note that I came from the part of animal advocacy that is closely aligned with effective altruism, so I'll be biased, and it's good to expect that reasonable people will disagree with me in at least some parts. Additionally, Open Philanthropy, which is crucial here, is the main funder of my organization. But if bias is present in this summary, I'm very confident it's rather due to the alignment with the core premises of effective altruism rather than a conflict of interest. Funding While the animal advocacy movement has never been big, it has always had very active and dedicated activists. People have always been willing to sacrifice a lot to make a difference for animals. Breaking in or getting hired at farms to document the sickening reality of animal suffering or rescue animals, being abused by police, working for years for free or minimal pay, and using any personal funds available to produce necess...

In this episode I am joined by coach Erin Nichols! This was a great episode because we talk about one of the most difficult experiences Erin had to go through in her life and how it became an opportunity for her to find her super power. We all have things in life that come up that can feel overbearing or daunting. So much so that we don't feel like we're able to still make time for ourselves and our goals. Which can lead to completely giving up on ourselves because we lack a lot of time and control over certain situations. This can be true, but there's always a way to find some form of progress. It's being able to accept that it may not be at the level where we want it to be, and that's okay. As long as we find something in the chaos we're making progress. I hope you enjoy this episode and if you do, please share it with someone who may need to hear this. More of Erin: https://www.instagram.com/coach_erin_nichols/ See you on the next one. Self Discipline Is The Key To Success! No Distractions! What does discipline mean in life?Discipline is one of the most important personality traits in everyone's life. I watched Undercover Billionaire with Grant Cardone so you don't have to. I was forced into it by Cardone's relentless Instagram ads from his $63 million dollar private jet about how he made 7 figures in 90 days. What was he selling on the show? Overnight success. Go figure. Some say "it takes 20 years to become an overnight success," but they've got it wrong, because the biggest secret to overnight success is actually selling the dream of living the dream. In this episode of Marketing Muckraking, I break down how to become an overnight success the dickfunnel way! And why, despite following the "easy" formulas, the success rate for students in celebrity business coaching programs like B-School, StoryBrand, and whatever Grant Cardone is selling, is so damn low. Mentioned on the show: Undercover Billionaire: Season 2 with Grant Cardone Episode 6 of Marketing Muckraking, "Why Are There No Negative B-School Reviews?" This episode was originally published as an essay on my blog on April 5, 2022. What do the karaoke jams Mambo Number 5, Closing Time and Stacey's Mom have in common? Other than them being super catchy, sing at the top of your lungs one hit wonders, not a ton else. When we released our first product ever created, the OG's, we were hellbent on continuing to innovate our products to be better each time, and sidestep the common “one hit wonder” trap. So, how do we do it ya say? Well, let's talk to Mountain, our ringleader for the product team, or in goodr speak, the Fungineer Flock.
Quantum Quote: “Be the change you want to see in the world,” Gandhi said. So whatever it is you don't like, instead of complaining about it, do something about it. Live that change!” - Chef Chris Galarza Did you know that cooking with gas can produce unhealthy levels of carbon monoxide? At 200 parts per million, gas emissions can even far exceed the federal maximum of 9 parts per million. While only 1% of chefs in America are currently cooking with an induction stove - the top US restaurants are making the transition, and about 30% of the world's chef's have already moved to make our air cleaner, kitchens more productive and comfortable, and our lives more sustainable. In one hour of cooking with gas, you can produce 38.9 pounds of food.In the same hour, an induction stove can cook 70.9 pounds of food. Eco-friendly and energy-saving electric induction stoves are SAFER, CLEANER, more CONTROLLABLE, and FASTER than gas. So what is stopping you from making the change? Check out this week's AWESome EarthKind Energy podcast, where we interview Chef Chris Galarza, the Founder and Culinary Sustainability Consultant of Forward Dining Solutions LLC. When talking about sustainability, when talking about electrification and decarbonization, it has to start with the kitchen. SuperNova #2. When I was running Chatham Eden Hall, the recorded indoor kitchen temperature did not exceed 72 degrees Fahrenheit, despite having temperatures outside that far exceeded 85 degrees. Even through production, we were cooler inside in the kitchen next to the ovens than we were outside with the fresh air. SuperNova #3. Gas ranges at best are 50% efficient - which means that, if you have a 60,000 BTUs burner, 30,000 BTUs are literally getting burned and tossed into your kitchen, which isn't going into the pan, isn't going into the food - it's just wasting your money. Worst Career Moment: “So the worst moment was when we were giving a tour of the campus and I was explaining how this all works. I had someone trying to help that was doing it all wrong, and then the power went out. And, I was like “everything was going wrong”. So I had to explain to them that, of course, if the power goes out, you can't cook. But also it's illegal to cook with anything, gas or electric, when the power's out.” - Chef Chris Galarza Aha! Moment: “My background was working at five stars, five-diamond resorts all the way down to mom-and-pop restaurants, I never worked with electric cooking. It was all new to me, and we were creating it on the fly. For the last six years, that's all I've done. I had this Aha! moment in the middle of like construction, in the middle of creating this, that if this works out it can be life-changing.” - Chef Chris Galarza Best Advice He's Ever Received: “Get out of your head. Your worst enemy is the little voice in your head.” - Chef Chris Galarza Personal Habit that Contributes to Success: “No matter what, even if I'm working from home, I always wear my chef's coat. It gives me the illusion that I'm at work instead of being at home with my Xbox is. So, always try to keep yourself professional, even when you're working from home. And be diligent.” - Chef Chris Galarza Internet Resource: LinkedIn hashtags Book Recommendation: What Einstein Told His Cooks: Kitchen Science Explained by Robert L. Wolke. The Flavor Bible by Karen A. Page & Andrew Dornenburg Magic Wand: “It would be the destigmatization of electric cooking, Just eliminate all gas cooking and the stigma behind it.” - Chef Chris Galarza WTF: “So I'll say my most fun one is a weird one. It was a hurricane right before Hurricane Katrina, I was living in Florida. Then another one that came through. It was my first hurricane ever. We were terrified. We're from New Jersey and have never lived through a hurricane. So we're barricading stuff, and then, we're ready to go. We have food. We have everything we need. Around three in the morning, we lose power, and everyone's asleep. My stepdad and I were listening to what's happening outside. And he and I are like, "We should open that door and check it out." So... we opened the door, and it flew open. There was stuff flying in the house. We were just- both of us, big dudes trying to shut this door, and we just laughed. My mom was livid with us because we had tree branches and water in the house. It was so awesome. And then after it was all done, we walked outside and for the first time and only time I've ever been in Florida, there was no humidity. It felt like a perfect fall day. I just enjoyed that day more than anything.” Most Energized About Today: “One thing I'm most energized about is that people are actually taking this topic seriously. And there's a lot of people like yourself that are talking about it.” - Chef Chris Galarza Parting Advice: “Never ever take a job that you're not afraid of. Always take a job that you think is outside your reach because that's what's gonna make you push yourself. That's just going to make you go in there every day and try to outwork everybody.” - Chef Chris Galarza Connect: Email: Cgalarza@ForwardDiningSolutions.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chef-christopher-galarza-8a632742/ Website: https://forwarddiningsolutions.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/forwarddiningsolutionsllc/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DiningForward Podcast Website: https://sustainableoverloadpodcast.com/ Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sustainablepod/ Podcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/S_O_Podcast

I've been looking forward to it. Jill DeWit: Do you know what's so funny this last week to me has been so weird with we had reduced schedule in our office because of holidays. We had reduced schedule for us for other reasons. Steven Butrala: It's been a strange season. Jill DeWit: It's been really weird this last week. So here we are, Monday, New Year's Eve. I feel like I haven't recorded in a month. Even though it hasn't been a month. But I feel like this is really weird. Steven Butrala: It's been a strange holiday from a works perspective. Everything else has been great. Jill DeWit: It is. Steven Butrala: Dramatically, dramatic slow down in inbound phone traffic. Jill DeWit: Yes. Steven Butrala: For real estate. Jill DeWit: But I will say this. Steven Butrala: Which proves my point from last week. Jill DeWit: But here's what's not slowing down though by the way, our members are sending out mail. They are downloading data. Because here's the beauty of all of us investors right now. We have two weeks off. A lot of people from our regular day jobs, and so now's the time like let's get this mail going. And I'm go happy that people are doing it. Steven Butrala: Yeah, I'm watching a lot of data downloads with the down time. This tells me that our group is real entrepreneurs. They have some time off from their regular job and they're using it to download data. Jill DeWit: Killing it. Steven Butrala: And get mail out. Jill DeWit: Well, I'm even noticing a lot of new members. And I've talked to people personally that have just said you know what this is the time we're joining right now. I have some time off. I'm going to do it. I'm going to get through the program. I mean I talked to two guys the other day, Chris and Shane. If you're listening. And I talked to them on Christmas Eve. And actually they left a nice note. Let me say this real quick. They both left me a very nice, I surprised them too because it was me calling on Christmas Eve, they're like I thought it was going to be your team. I'm like nope. You get me. They're off. They're like oh my gosh. So we has such a nice chat. And then so they joined Land Academy. I think it was the day after Christmas. And they left me a nice note in Facebook thanking me for the call. But the point of this whole thing was is Chris and Shane were telling me that like we're just talking about, we have the time off. We worked hard for this. We want to do something else. And they both have good jobs by the way. It's not like they need this. This is like we want to do something else. And so anyway. It's cool we have a lot of new members coming on right now. And I'm very happy. Steven Butrala: You want to get to the show chatty? Jill DeWit: All right. Steven Butrala: Before we actually get to the topic, let's take a question posted by one of our members on the landinvestors.com online community. It's free. Jill DeWit: I'll try not...

What is your vision for your life? Beyond the nice cars, six or seven figures in your bank account, and comfortable home - dig deep! What is that you truly want to accomplish with the time that you have on earth? Is fame your goal? Is fulfillment your goal? Is causing the most good your goal? Are these just nice ideas that you have floating around in your head or are you actively working toward a full vision of success in your life? The truth is, your goals won't accomplish themselves! You actually have to put in the work to see the results, go figure! One of the best ways that I can help you Kaizenites, reach your goals and create a compelling vision for your life is by introducing you to people like Tim Conners. Tim is known as a sightless visionary, adventurer, speaker, cancer survivor, a fighter, and a giver. Tim was 15 years old when the doctors told him he had T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This disease would eventually go on to take Tim's sight. From that moment on, Tim has been on a journey filled with challenges, struggles, and victories. From trekking through the Grand Canyon to summiting Mount Kilimanjaro, Tim refuses to let anything stand in the way of his vision for success. Discover the powerful insights and lessons that have helped Tim succeed by listening to this episode! Here are a few takeaways from today's podcast episode with TIM CONNERS: You've got to have someone in your corner! Hope + Action = Success Don't underestimate the power of mental strength and positivity! Find something worth living for. Outline of This Episode [4:15] I introduce my guest, Tim Conners. [5:40] Tim shares his story of fighting cancer. [11:05] What was life like for Tim before he got sick? [14:15] How Tim's mom helped him set and reach his goals. [17:15] Inspiring others to crush their limiting beliefs. [19:15] What is the ALIVE principle? [21:15] Using other sense than sight to interact with an audience. [24:15] Hope + Action = Success. [27:00] Tim talks about his plan to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. [37:45] The power of mental strength and positivity. [44:45] Tim talks about his future plan to bike across the country. [46:45] What Own Your Self means to Tim. [48:00] Who should connect with Tim? Who is in your corner? When it comes to the business world, we are taught and conditioned that we can't count on anyone else for our success but ourselves. Is that really how life works? Should we have a lone wolf mentality? While we idolize guys like Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, and Jeff Bezos - the singular focus on a larger than life personality can blind us to the reality that they are where they are because of the people they have around them. As it turns out, having someone in your corner cheering you on and helping you along the way can make all the difference! Think about your journey up to this point. You are where you are now because someone somewhere took the time to encourage you, big or small. For Tim Conners, that person was his mother. Through all the hospital stays and constant doctor's visits, Tim's mother was there in his corner helping him to set goals that would eventually set him on the road to recovery. Who do you have in your corner? Who can you rely on to help you set goals and hold you accountable to reach them? The myth of the self-made man is just that, a myth! Reject the idea that you can make it without anyone's help. Getting support and help along the way doesn't show weakness, it shows true strength! Hope + Action = Success What do you hope to accomplish with your life? What legacy do you want to leave behind? Is there a greater vision behind your short-term goals or are you just plodding along without purpose? I've been there, Kaizenites. Depressed, unsure of my future, wondering what it would take to break out of the funk. Through all of my struggles, I've found only one thing that actually matters. Action. We can go to all the seminars, masterminds, and workshops ad nauseam and still go home only to find ourselves sinking back into that worn out butt shape on our couch cushion. Wake up, my friends! Inspiration and hope mean nothing if they aren't married to action! While the distance between your couch and to your vision for success may seem like the widest chasm imaginable, all it takes is one little step to start the journey. You don't have to accomplish all of your goals overnight! Break it down into bite size chunks. Do something to get movement and traction in your life today. I won't sugar coat it, getting from where you are to where you want to be won't be easy but I know from personal experience that it is absolutely worth it! The power of positivity. The last thing our world needs is another cynical person who is always sucking the air out of every room they walk into. What are you adding to your surroundings? Are you bringing forth positivity and joy or are you draining it from others? You have the power to shape your own story! How will you shape it? Will you lead with your limitations? You don't' have a nice car. You don't have your dream job. You don't have perfect physical health. You don't have the wealth you'd like to have. Or will you lead with what you do have? Will you leverage the good in your life to amplify positivity around you? You can impact those around you with something as simple as a simile. Imagine what your life would look like if you make an effort to radiate positive everywhere you went. My challenge for you, Kaizenites is to work toward the good in your life. It can be as simple as a smile toward a stranger, buying coffee for someone behind you in line, or taking the time to have a pleasant conversation with your neighbor.
