Ajahn Amaro received a BSc. in Psychology and Physiology from the University of London. Spiritual searching led him to Thailand, where he went to Wat Pah Nanachat, a Forest Tradition monastery established for Western disciples of Thai meditation master Ajahn Chah, who ordained him as a bhikkhu in 1979. Soon afterwards he returned to England and joined Ajahn Sumedho at the newly established Chithurst Monastery. He resided for many years at Amaravati Buddhist Monastery, making trips to California every year during the 1990s. In June 1996 he established Abhayagiri Monastery in Redwood Valley, California, where he was co-Abbot with Ajahn Pasanno until 2010. In 2010, he was invited to return to Amaravati, to become the successor of Luang Por Sumedho as abbot of this large monastic community. He was appointed an official 'Upajjhāya' (preceptor), with the authority to formally ordain Buddhist monks, and has since ordained and trained a large group of monks and nuns as his direct disciples. Pictures of Ajahn Amaro's visit at Dhammagiri Website of Ajahn's monastery, Amaravati Website of Dhammagiri Forest Hermitage Dhammagiri Youtube Channel .

“Meditation is not about having a profound experience every time you practice. It's about consistency and openness to possibility. It invites an ongoing revelation that arises mysteriously until it ultimately overtakes us with its power.” – Craig Hamilton  Spiritual practice offers us various gateways through which we can directly experience the profound freedom of awakened consciousness. In this episode, Craig leads us through a series of “meditation experiments” that guide us beyond the mind's obstructions into this remarkably accessible experience of inner freedom. He then shares how meditation practice allows us to access and express awakened consciousness more consistently in our daily lives.  In this episode, we're offering something experiential. As Craig leads us through several inquiries and periods of guided meditation, he encourages us to notice that meditation is actually always already happening. In any moment, we can recognize that nothing is ultimately missing and that nothing needs to be known by the mind for us to access the freedom of our true nature.   Please don't attempt to listen to this episode while driving or doing anything else that requires your attention. To get the full benefit of the guided meditations, we encourage you to listen when you are in a quiet place where you won't be interrupted.   To access the full transcript of this episode and more resources, visit the episode page on MeditationChangesEverything.com. If you're interested in exploring more of Craig's meditation experiments, you're invited to tune in to a 90-minute online workshop Craig will be hosting called Meditation 2.0 – The Miracle of Direct Awakening. Following up on the last week's show on Hygge, the Danish art of feeling good, Kevin and Niseema welcome Dr. Lisa Miller to talk about how the brain responds to Hygge and other pleasurable experiences.  In her book "The Awakened Brain: The New Science of Spirituality and Our Quest For An Inspired Life,"  Dr. Miller shows us that when a person talks about a spiritual experience or a feeling of connection, fMRI scans show an increase in blood flow and the brain takes on a reddish color. Conversely, when participants were asked to tell a sad or depressing story, blood flow in the brain was constricted.  Dr. Miller explains that the reddish brain reflects a kind of awareness called "Awakened Awareness," and that the brain is capable of shifting states and feelings based on what you are thinking and experiencing.___________________________To find out more about Dr. Lisa Miller or events connected with The Awakened Brain go to www.drlismillerphd.comFor more information, to suggest show ideas, ask questions or get support, contact hosts Kevin O'Donoghue LMHC or Niseema Dyan Diemer SEP  at: info@thepositivemindcenter.com, or call 212-757-4488. You can sign up for our weekly newsletter at www.tffpp.org.Thank you for listening,Kevin and Niseemawww.tffpp.orghttps://www.kevinlmhc.comwww.niseema.comwww.thepositivemindcenter.comPRODUCTION CREDITSOpening Music : Another Country, Pure Shadowfax, ShadowfaxBreak Music: Original Composition by Geoff BradyEnd Music : TFFPP Theme - Giullian Goiello for The Foundation for Positive PsychologyThe Positive Mind is produced with the help of:Engineering: Geoff BradyProducer: Connie Shannon Website Design and End Music: Giullian GioelloMarketing and PR: Jen Maguire, Maguire PR, jen@maguirepr.com

They arise and subside in a greater space of Self Awareness which is something far more fundamental than any ideas you might have about yourself.  Having the realization that Awareness is not something that you do, but rather something that you Are, is a awakening of witness consciousness, a major step in personal evolution. Does depression hold the key to spiritual awakening? Our guest, Dr. Lisa Miller, PhD, thinks that it does and she tells us why in her new book, "The Awakened Brain: The New Science of Spirituality and Our Quest for an Inspired Life." The experience of depression is marked by a loss of connection to self and others. Dr. Miller says that it is also the loss of a sense of being held by a benevolent force or presence greater than yourself.  How often have you felt that you, "had to get the job", "had to get into the university," or "pass the test"? Dr. Miller explains that these thoughts come from our "Achievement Awareness," and are most often the cause for our depressions. She shows us through fMRI scans that when telling a depressing story blood flow throughout the brain is constricted.  Conversely, when a person talks about a spiritual experience or a feeling of connection,  fMRI scans show an increase in blood flow and the brain takes on a reddish color. Dr. Miller explains that the reddish brain reflects the other kind of awareness called "Awakened Awareness." ------------------------------------------To find out more about Dr.
