Thomas and Dr. Lisa Miller, a clinical psychologist, professor, and NYT bestselling author, explore humans' innate capacity for spirituality. Dr. Lisa explains how neuroscience and cutting-edge research help us understand our hard-wired drive for spiritual awareness and what these discoveries mean for the way we approach our spiritual journeys…and our entire lives. According to Dr. Miller, we're all receptive to transcendent relationships, we are all emanations of the same source, and there is hard science to back this up. She and Thomas discuss how connection with others can deepen our spiritual experiences and how important it is to align with life's natural rhythms. They also explore how trauma can be a pathway to spiritual growth and awakening, and Dr. Miller offers a guided practice for experiencing transcendence and awakening to our spiritual awareness. Do you long for something more in your life? Are you innately drawn toward spirituality? Do you think we as humans are naturally wired to look for deeper meaning in our lives? Whether it be a walk in the woods, or through mediation or prayer, our guest today, Dr. Lisa Miller, believes that we are naturally able to tap into a heightened awareness of the world around us. We are able to cultivate circuits in our brains which help us to become more spiritually aware. By developing this awareness, we can begin to free ourselves from depression, anxiety, loss of creativity, and so much more. We can consider things from a more awakened, more elevated perspective. Dr. Miller believes when we feel depressed, this is an alert asking us for deeper spiritual exploration.  Dr. Miller is a professor in the Clinical Psychology Program at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she founded the Spirituality Mind Body Institute, the first Ivy League graduate program and research institute in spirituality and psychology. She has been with the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical School for more than a decade.  Dr. Miller is the NYT bestselling author of “The Spiritual Child” and her latest book is “The Awakened Brain.” She is the Editor of the Oxford University Press Handbook of Psychology and Spirituality, Founding Co-Editor-in-Chief of the APA journal “Spirituality in Clinical Practice,” an elected Fellow of The American Psychological Association (APA) and the two-time President of the APA Society for Psychology and Spirituality. A graduate of Yale University and University of Pennsylvania, she earned her doctorate under the founder of positive psychology, Martin Seligman, and she has served as Principal Investigator on multiple grant-funded research studies. She believes that the brain might function more like an antenna — capable of sending and receiving consciousness, which holds information, love, and intelligence. In other words, consciousness can exist independently of matter. Miller highlights scientific research that has explored this idea of shared consciousness, particularly in bonded relationships and among twins. She emphasizes the interconnectedness of humanity, where our actions and treatment of others leave lasting imprints on a collective consciousness field. Miller wants to redefine how we understand human consciousness and interconnectedness. This view of our minds has implications for fields such as psychology, neuroscience, and spirituality: by recognizing our shared consciousness, we can live a less lonely and more mindful shared existence. What alpha brainwaves can teach us about loneliness | Lisa Miller

Scientists can't define spirituality. But we can study its healing effects, says Columbia professor Lisa Miller. This interview is an episode from @The-Well our publication about ideas that inspire a life well-lived, created with the @JohnTempletonFoundation . Clinical psychologist Lisa Miller asserts that we are at epidemic levels of loneliness in modern society, and attributes this to a distorted perception of isolation. All humans are hardwired with neural circuits that allow us to realize our connection to a profound unit of consciousness, she explains — so why aren't we recognizing it? Regardless of our faith, traditions, or spiritual beliefs, when humans enter spiritual awareness, our brains emit a specific wavelength called high amplitude alpha. This wavelength is known as the Schumann Resonance, the wavelength of nature and all life emitted by the Earth. This shared wavelength between humanity and all nature is a force of oneness that we can tap into through prayer, meditation, and mystical moments. Despite the loneliness we may feel, Miller asserts that in truth, we are interconnected with all beings — each of us a unit in a profound shared consciousness. Embracing spirituality, and practicing it with intention, can have a transformative impact on our lives, helping us to realize in times of difficulty that we are never really alone. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Go Deeper with Big Think: ►Become a Big Think Member Get exclusive access to full interviews, early access to new releases, Big Think merch and more ►Get Big Think+ for Business Guide, inspire and accelerate leaders at all levels of your company with the biggest minds in business -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Lisa Miller: Lisa Miller, Ph.D., is a professor in the Clinical Psychology Program at Teachers College, Columbia University. Can spirituality enhance our mental health? That is the question that psychologist and researcher Dr. Lisa Miller has pursued through her career. During her clinical internship after graduate school, she observed how while some of her patients had symptoms of major depression that required medication, other patients carried a sadness that carried life's big questions: What is the purpose of life? Is there a larger meaning to existence? Decades later, Lisa has found that each of us has an “awakened brain,” neural circuitry that enables a human's natural capacity for spiritual awareness. In this conversation, Lisa and the Surgeon General delve into the science that explains spirituality's protective effects on mental health. They also discuss the universal human need for an inner life that connects us to something greater than ourselves, and offer a few meditation practices to support the awakened brain.  (02:00)    Introductory Guided Meditation  (08:43)    What is spiritual health?  (15:04)    How does Dr. Lisa Miller define spirituality?  (18:18)    Why does spirituality protect our mental health?  (20:55)    What are some practices to build spiritual health?  (24:40)    What is the awakened brain?  (26:56)    Are there particular stages of life when spiritual seeking spikes?  (30:03)    What is an Awakened Campus?  (32:44)    Why don't college campuses focus more on spiritual well-being?  (34:26)    How Dr. Miller's spiritual crisis as a young person become her life's work.  (45:55)    What are the core elements of spirituality?  (53:12)    Where has Dr. Miller found the support for spiritual exploration?  (59:58)    How can parents build a spiritual foundation with their children?  We'd love to hear from you! What if there is a possibility of tapping into a heightened awareness of the world around you and your place in it? A possibility of moving from an achievement orientation, where so often the questions center around what do I want and how can I  get it?To a more expansive, open and receptive way of relating to our experience as human beings? Today's guest will is Dr. Lisa Miller. She's a psychologist, a scientist, and a professor at Columbia University, and in her extraordinary book The Awakened Brain, she explores these questions and ideas in-depth. What she will reveal in this conversation (and more thoroughly in her book)  is that humans are universally equipped with a capacity for spirituality, and that our brains become more resilient and robust as a result of it. Through her wonderful storytelling (which you will hear a lot of today) she will offer profounds insights into the surprising science of spirituality, and how to engage some of the lessons from her groundbreaking work practically in our lives.Today's conversation is deep, wide-ranging, and may be the most personal I've had on the show yet.In the first half of the episode: Lisa will share some of her story of trying to have a child. She will openly  describe many of the struggles  her and her husband faced with infertility, and a most unexpected, but beautiful turn of events that led to ultimately adopting their son. I will also share some of my own story of being adopted, as well as the challenges my wife and I  faced with having a child of our own. From a planned perspective this interview went off the rails as we shared our stories back and forth for the first 25 minutes or so, and you'll hear us laugh about that later in the conversation, but as Lisa so aptly reminded me many times - so often plans can go awry and letting them do so, by loosening the grip of trying to control things, is actually a step toward awakening. In the latter part of the interview you'll hear more about:The two modes of awareness (achieving and awakened awareness) that Lisa has mapped in our brains through her fascinating work in neuroscienceHow to tap into awakened awareness and be in dialogue with your lifeThe many ways of knowing (logic, empiricism, mysticism, and intuition) and the validity of them allHow adversity can often be the doorway to growth and transformation. The role of spirituality in medicine, clinical treatment, and healing A guided meditation she's used with thousands of people. If you'd like you can participate yourself during the episode. Or if you'd prefer to do the practice later you can find it here: Practicing Courage #15: Being in dialogue with your lifeAnd more!More about Lisa:Lisa Miller, Ph.D., is the New York Times bestselling author of The Spiritual Child and a professor in the Clinical Psychology Program at Teachers College, Columbia University. In this episode, Mirian Vilela talks with Dr. Lisa Miller about the role of spirituality in mental and emotional health, the importance of spirituality in education, and the connections between her work and the Earth Charter. Dr. Miller explains that while religion is completely environmentally and culturally transmitted, we are born with an innate physical capacity for spirituality. She emphasizes that religion is not a requirement to fulfill this capacity for a transcendent relationship, but that this connection to a whole can be experienced through a god, the universe, ancestors, or another higher power.  However, this innate spirituality is being socialized out of children which she believes is resulting in many of the emotional and mental health problems in today's societies. In response to this, Dr. Miller created the Collaborative for Spirituality in Education to develop spaces for spirituality in K-12 schools. She believes that the most important work for a parent, teacher, or caregiver is to strengthen children's spiritual form by modeling this behavior. To foster spiritual growth, parents must both “walk the walk” and “talk the talk” equally. In her book, The Awakened Brain, Dr. Miller discusses the need for awakened awareness. An obstacle to this is the transactional, achievement-oriented mindset that focuses on attaining more money, prestige, and material wealth. Instead, we must focus on the “deep in-and-of-itself of living”, spiritual value, and quality of life. Counterintuitively, this will lead to more outward success. Dr. Miller sees the connection between her work and that of the Earth Charter because of the focus on the interconnectedness and oneness with the environmental, spiritual, social, and political. Her work at the Spirituality Mind Body Institute identifies a need for a spiritual voice in environmental protection and education. In Principle 14, the Earth Charter emphasizes the importance of moral and spiritual education which parallels her work with the Collaborative for Spirituality in Education.  Finally, both the Earth Charter and Dr. Miller recognize the importance of a transcendent relationship through our connection to the greater whole. We will learn: The surprising clinical evidence for how spirituality protects our mental health. How our own states of mental health pass down to our children and how spirituality is 29% inheritable. What factors create the spiritual connection necessary to physically alter our brains. Have you ever felt a deep sense of inner peace after meditating, or felt a rush of euphoria during a spiritual experience? Isn't it interesting how something as intangible as spirituality seems to have a tangible effect on our physical selves? Well, what if I told you that recent studies in neuroscience suggest that spirituality can actually alter the composition and structure of our brains? People who have a spiritual connection have been shown to have increased gray matter density in areas of the brain associated with self-awareness and empathy. They've also been found to have altered activity in brain regions involved in stress response and addiction. In other words, spirituality actually impacts our neurobiological makeup! How incredible is that? And that's why I'm so excited about this episode today. It turns out, the changes we experience aren't just the placebo effect. We're not just convincing ourselves to be more positive, we're actually creating physical changes to our brains. And there are a lot of scientific studies to back this up, which we'll get into. Our guest is Dr. Lisa Miller. She is the New York Times bestselling author of The Spiritual Child and her new book The Awakened Brain. Are we as humans naturally wired to look for deeper meaning in our lives? Are we innately drawn toward a more spiritual realm? Whether it be a walk in the woods, or through mediation or prayer, our guest today, Dr. Lisa Miller, believes that we are naturally able to tap into a heightened awareness of the world around us. We are able to cultivate circuits in our brains which help us to become more spiritually aware. By developing this awareness, we can begin to free ourselves from depression, anxiety, loss of creativity, and so much more. We can consider things from a more awakened, more elevated perspective. Dr Miller believes when we feel depressed, this is an alert asking us for deeper spiritual exploration.    Dr. Miller is a professor in the Clinical Psychology Program at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she founded the Spirituality Mind Body Institute, the first Ivy League graduate program and research institute in spirituality and psychology. Do people who identify with symptoms of what is known as borderline personality disorder have a unique ability to connect to the transcendent? Are chronic feelings of emptiness less about being “disordered” and more about being spiritually starved? My guest on this episode, Dr. Lisa Miller, seems to think so. Lisa Miller has devoted her career to scientific research proving that spirituality is a natural aspect of our humanity and that our brains become more resilient and robust because of it. We are each born with an innate desire to question the world around us in search of something more. A leading generational psychologist on the benefits of spirituality, Lisa graduated from Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania, earning her doctorate in psychology. She is currently a professor of psychology and education at Teachers College, Columbia University, and the Founder and Director of the Spirituality Mind Body Institute, the first Ivy League graduate program and research institute in spirituality and psychology. In her book The Awakened Brain, Dr. Miller uses science to show that spirituality (different from religious belief) is one of the strongest protective factors against psychological suffering. Her research clearly shows that our physiological development presents us with occasional moments of crisis at certain times in our lives. When we meet those moments of crisis and trauma from a spiritual perspective, we are more protected against psychological suffering in later life stages. Dr. Miller believes that healing from trauma requires bringing greater awareness to the signs and lessons that the universe has for us and bringing those lessons into the future without getting stuck in rumination over the past.

If you could ask yourself one question every morning that would allow you to tap into a heightened awareness of the world around you and your place in it, wouldn't you? This question could not only help you feel more connected to yourself and your loved ones but also help you feel less depressed, anxious, or lost.It was this question that our Cracking Open guest Dr. Lisa Miller, professor in the Clinical Psychology Program at Columbia University, asked several 18–25-year olds while going through an MRI.  What she discovered is that when we contemplate this question we also tap into our innate, biological capacity for spiritual development.  The question is, “Can you remember a time when you held a deep connection to a loving guiding force in life, call it God, universe, or nature?”In this week's episode of the Cracking Open podcast, Lisa talks about her own data and science that proves we are all hard-wired to cultivate a spiritual practice and what she calls an "awakened brain". The awakened brain can insulate us from trauma, anxiety, and depression, and increase our grit and love so we feel more grounded in ourselves and everyone around us. We're extremely excited to be joining forces with Zach, a graduate of Harvard Divinity School, where his work focused on intellectual history and philosophy of religion. Previously, Zach has been a producer at HarvardX where he built open online courses in the humanities  — he's also a highly experienced podcaster behind shows like Ministry of Ideas and Writ Large. For this first episode with Zach as host, he brought on an incredible guest: Dr. Lisa Miller. Lisa is a Professor in the Clinical Psychology Program at Columbia University, where she founded the Spirituality Mind Body Institute, the first Ivy League graduate program in spirituality and psychology. Dr. Miller's research has been published in top-tier psychiatric journals, and she is the Editor of the Oxford Handbook of Psychology and Spirituality and the Founder of the American Psychological Association's journal, Spirituality in Clinical Practice. After finishing her undergraduate work at Yale, she received her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. In her conversation with Zach, Lisa shared the research she's done on spirituality from a scientific perspective, including some of the findings she wrote about in her 2021 book The Awakened Brain: The New Science of Spirituality and Our Quest for an Inspired Life. In her words, Lisa “takes the lens of science and focuses it on the impact of spirituality in human life,” with some jaw-dropping results. She talks about the truly remarkable real-world  benefits of a personal spirituality that leads to a lived relationship with the divine, and calls for a spiritual renaissance to help solve some of our society's most troubling issues

This episode is with Dr. Lisa Miller. I first came across her name while watching her on one of my favorite podcasts: the Rich Roll show. She spoke about the link between spirituality and science, something I had never heard about. Spirituality for a lot of us is quite out there, hard to really grasp, and especially difficult to prove. In this episode, we go into many different things spirituality related - from defining it, to talking about deep relationships, inner wisdom, connecting with a higher power and much more - all of this is covered in her new book, the awakened brain. You’ll see that she guides me through two practices in the episode. We’ll post these separately as well so you can access them anytime you need. Finally - we ran out of time with Dr. Lisa and we schedule a round 2 with her soon - so stay on the lookout for that. To give you all a bit more clarity on who she is, Dr. Lisa is the New York Times bestselling author of The Spiritual Child and a professor in the Clinical Psychology Program at Teachers College, Columbia University. She is the Founder and Director of the Spirituality Mind Body Institute, the first Ivy League graduate program and research institute in spirituality and psychology. The many benefits to cultivating a spiritual practice are obvious to those with experience—but it's a pursuit too long dismissed by skeptics and scientists. That is, until now.Recent research in neuroscience, genetics, and epidemiology now establish that humans are not only universally equipped with a capacity for (and inclination towards) spirituality, but that our brains, when so awakened, become more resilient and robust—and our lives more meaningful and content. Here today to discuss the emerging and fascinating ‘science of spirituality' is the woman who helped pioneer it, Lisa Miller, PhD.A generational leading psychologist on the benefits of spirituality, Lisa is a graduate of Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned her doctorate in psychology. She is currently a professor of psychology and education at Teachers College, Columbia University, and is the Founder and Director of the Spirituality Mind Body Institute, the first Ivy League graduate program and research institute in spirituality and psychology.Dr. Miller is widely published in leading academic journals, has appeared on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and Weekend Today as an expert, and her first book, The Spiritual Child was a New York Times bestseller. Her latest work (and the focus of today's discussion) is The Awakened Brain, a groundbreaking exploration of the neuroscience of spirituality that sets a bold new paradigm for health, healing, and resilience. My exchange with Dr. Miller is centered on the intersection of hard science and spirituality—what neurology, neurobiology, genetics, epidemiology, and psychiatry can tell us about the mental health benefits of cultivating your own awakened brain.I think you will find her work fascinating, full of counterintuitive findings and practical advice on the many concrete ways to access your own innate spirituality—and more importantly, how this can be deployed to enhance things like grit, optimism, and resilience. In addition, we explore the many ways you can leverage the awakened brain to insulate yourself against addiction, trauma, and depression.Ultimately, this is a conversation about how to build a life of greater joy and enhanced personal fulfillment to better thrive and contribute to the greater well-being of all.To read more, click here.
