Jeremiah 17 The Quest for Happiness (vv. 5-6) Deserted Distracted Dry The Quest for Truth (vv. 7-8) Refreshed Ready Restful The Core of Our Quest (vv. 9-10) The heart of the problem The problem of the heart More to Consider The heart of every problem is the problem in the heart, and the human heart is deceitful (Jacob in the Hebrew) and incurable. We often say, Well, if I know my own heart, but we dont know our own hearts. God does. He searches the heart and mind and knows exactly how to reward each person. If we want to know what our hearts are like, we must read the Word and let the Spirit teach us. The hearts of the Jewish leaders were turned away from the Lord and His truth. Consequently, they made unwise decisions and plunged the nation into ruin. Warren W. Wiersbe If the ways of blessing and cursing are so clear (vv. 58), why would anyone choose the path of sin? The cause for such action is in the heart. It is so deceitful that Jeremiah wondered who could even understand it. God answered by informing Jeremiah that He can search the heart and examine the mind. God knows those innermost thoughts and motives that an individual might hide from all others. Therefore God could justly render to each person what his deeds deserve. Charles H. Dyer Many passages of Scripture teach that God judges people by their deeds, while others indicate that He judges people by their motives. There is no inconsistency, as this verse points out, because ones heart and actions are closely connected. Other passages clearly teach that God evaluates people based on their hearts (1 Sm 16:7; 1 Kg 8:39; Lk 16:15), but actions reveal what is in peoples hearts (1 Sm 2:3; Mt 7:1516; 12:3335; 15:1819; Jms 2:18). Whether one is judged by inward motivation or outward acts makes no difference. What a person actually does reveals where his or her heart lies (Mt 21:2831). Douglas R. Groothuis

Today we're sharing another fantastic session from our Restore Conference last October, this time from Lisa Miller. Lisa is a clinical psychologist and professor at Columbia University who specializes in the science of spirituality. She's also the author of the popular 2021 book The Awakened Brain: The New Science of Spirituality and Our Quest for an Inspired Life.We often think of science and spirituality as separate ways of knowing that don't really speak to each other, where science focuses on what we can see and empirically observe, while spirituality focuses on the unseen. Lisa's research bridges these worlds, building an empirical case for the reality of spirituality and its benefits across the lifespan, and showing how science can be a “witness” to spirituality. She believes we all have an innate, in-born capacity for spirituality, or “relational, transcendent awareness”. Individuals who cultivate a strong spiritual core are less likely to experience despair, addiction, and depression throughout the life course, and a spiritual core is correlated with growth and resilience after facing challenges.We really loved Lisa's session as well as her beautiful spirit. As we got to know her in person at Restore, we realized what a special person she is and felt the love she has for our community. We think you'll be able to feel that as you listen to her talk.

Does depression hold the key to spiritual awakening?Our guest, Dr. Lisa Miller, PhD, thinks that it does and she tells us why in her new book, "The Awakened Brain: The New Science of Spirituality and Our Quest for an Inspired Life." The experience of depression is marked by a loss of connection to self and others. Dr. Miller says that it is also the loss of a sense of being held by a benevolent force or presence greater than yourself.  How often have you felt that you, "had to get the job", "had to get into the university," or "pass the test"? Dr. Miller explains that these thoughts come from our "Achievement Awareness," and are most often the cause for our depressions. She shows us through fMRI scans that when telling a depressing story blood flow throughout the brain is constricted.  Conversely, when a person talks about a spiritual experience or a feeling of connection,  fMRI scans show an increase in blood flow and the brain takes on a reddish color. Callister was a member of the Presidency of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when this devotional address was given on 14 August 2012. "Second, early Christian writers likewise wrote of our divine destiny.9 As early as the second century, Irenaeus (A.D. 115–202) noted: “We have not been made gods from the beginning, but at first merely men, then at length gods.”10 On another occasion Irenaeus clarified that exalted man would not be relegated to some type of glorified angel but literally become a god: “Passing beyond the angels, and be made after the image and likeness of God.”11 Clement of Alexandria (A.D. 160–200), a contemporary of Irenaeus, spoke of the reward of godhood that followed long preparation: “Being destined to sit on thrones with the other gods that have been first put in their places by the Saviour.”12 This same Clement of Alexandria then added this unequivocal statement about the man who lives a righteous life: “Knowing God, he will be made like God. . . . And that man becomes God, since God so wills.”13 Hippolytus (A.D. 170–236), bridging the second and third centuries, spoke of the unlimited potential of faithful Saints in this life: “And thou shalt be a companion of the Deity, and a co-heir with Christ. . . . For thou hast become God: . . . thou hast been deified,and begotten unto immortality.”14 Cyprian (A.D. 200–258), a well-known Christian leader of the third century, reaffirmed that men can become like Christ: “What Christ is, we Christians shall be, if we imitate Christ.”15 Origen (A.D. 185–255), also of the third century, wrote: “The true God [referring to the Father], then, is ‘The God,’ and those who are formed after Him are gods, images, as it were, of Him the prototype.”16 And in the fourth century St. Athanasius of Alexandria (A.D. 295–373) explained that “[God] was made flesh in order that we might be enabled to be made gods.”17 For several centuries this doctrinal truth survived, but eventually the Apostasy took its toll, and this doctrine in its purity and expansiveness was lost. The doctrine of man’s potential for godhood as taught by the Prophet Joseph Smith was not his invention—not his creation, not conjured up by some fertile mind. It was simply and solely a restoration of a glorious truth that had been taught in the scriptures and by many early Christian writers of the primitive Church." -Tad R. Do humans deserve to have an epoch named for us? On the one hand, we have irreparably changed the course of evolution. On the other hand, should things continue on their current trajectory, human civilization may not be around long enough to read as more than a blip on the fossil record. So, is Anthropocene the right name for the geologic period we’re in?    Peter Brannen is the award-winning science journalist and deep time aficionado behind The Ends of the World: Volcanic Apocalypses, Lethal Oceans, and Our Quest to Understand Earth’s Past Mass Extinctions. What I love about Pastor J.R. is that he brings an elevated value on the Word of God in sermon perp. Pastor JR and I spend a lot of time to talking about how to faithfully preach The Word in a way where we remove distractions. Which should be the motivation underneath quality preaching. We talk about how to preach to the specific context that God has placed before us in preaching. This was a helpful episode for me personally and I can't wait to hear about how God impacted your preaching through it.
