On Tibetan New Year, the Friday just after Shiva Ratri, we spent some time practicing non-dual meditation (practice with us here) using the Nirvana Shatakam as a "guided meditation" tool. We sandwich some postural yoga practice to rest, recover and energize after our physical exertions over the course of the week in between two non-dual meditations, using the 6 verses of the text. Then, right after that, in honor of the great yogi Milarepa, and Tibetan Tantrik tradition, we launch into a discussion on Milarepa featuring Kavindraji who is a lineage holder of the Kagyu, the tradition Milarepa founded. By learning about Milarepa, we can learn about the Tantrik world of magic and liberation, guru and disciple and ultimate freedom. One day, we will double back to offer a more complete biography and commentary on this greatest of Yogis, Mila of the Cotton Cloth (repa) and about his householder Gurus, Marpa and Dakmema. For now, we offer this light introduction based on Lobsang P Lhalungpa's wonderful book: "The Life of Milarepa".PS: Here is our playlist on all things Shiva!
In this insightful episode, Roland Torikian recounts his profound journey into Maya medicine, finding his spiritual calling in the heart of Mexico. Delving into the transformative power of community and ceremony, he explores how these ancient practices connect us to both the seen and unseen worlds. Initiated into Maya Medicine under the guidance of Lauro de la Cruz during the tumultuous Zapatista uprising, he shares how immersing himself in the culture felt like a homecoming, as he served the local Mayan community. Central to Maya healing practices are sweat lodges, which symbolise the womb of Mother Earth and serve as spaces for communal healing and transformation. Through the harmonisation of elemental forces and the acknowledgment of the visible and invisible realms, participants are invited to confront and transcend their inner imbalances. Roland emphasises the importance of intention setting and integration after sweat lodge ceremonies, urging participants to release unwanted states and embrace healing qualities. By reflecting on personal needs and contributions to the wider community, individuals can embark on a journey of self-discovery and collective healing. Roland also addresses misconceptions surrounding sweat lodges, highlighting the importance of preparation and caution for individuals with certain medical conditions. Ultimately, the sweat lodge becomes a microcosm of the world, stripping away inauthenticity and fostering humility, as participants reconnect with their bodies and breath, and listen within for guidance and healing. Listeners are left with a profound understanding of the transformative power of Maya medicine, community, and ceremony in restoring balance and wellbeing. --- Maya Medicine, originating from the Mayan civilization over 2,500 years ago, represents an integrated system of natural healing deeply rooted in the understanding of the interconnectedness between humanity and the natural world. Central to this medical system is the harmonization and balance of the five elemental forces: earth, water, fire, wind, and space, as well as the recognition of the relationship between the visible and invisible realms. Roland Torikian's journey as a Maya healer spans nearly three decades, encompassing both Mexico and the UK. His initiation into Maya Medicine occurred under the tutelage of Lauro de la Cruz in the Maya highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. Following his apprenticeship, Roland established a clinic in Dharamshala, North India, while delving into the study of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy. In his practice, Roland bridges the worlds of Maya and Tibetan medicine and healing, drawing parallels and connections between these ancient traditions. He emphasizes the utilization of ceremonies, meditation, and shamanic practices derived from the Kagyu lineage and Bon Buddhism. By integrating these modalities, Roland offers a holistic approach to healing that addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of individuals. Through his extensive experience and training, Roland embodies a unique perspective that embraces the wisdom of multiple cultural and spiritual traditions. His work not only serves to heal the ailments of the body but also to nourish the soul and facilitate deeper connections to the natural and spiritual worlds. Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche unfolds the key to living, especially valuable in today's modern, chaotic, fast paced world. Erric begins by asking Rinpoche, “What is the most important thing to know?” Rinpoche leads us through a pithy, vital explanation that anyone, struggling to thrive in modern life, will want to hear. About Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche is a world-renowned teacher and meditation master in the Kagyu and Nyingma traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. He was born in Tibet in 1951 as the oldest son of his mother Kunsang Dechen, a devoted Buddhist practitioner, and his father Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, an accomplished master of Buddhist meditation. As a young child, Chökyi Nyima—“Sun of the Dharma”—was recognized as the 7th incarnation of the Tibetan meditation master Gar Drubchen. In 1959 Rinpoche's family fled to India where Rinpoche spent his youth studying under some of Tibetan Buddhism's most illustrious masters, such as His Holiness the 16th Gyalwang Karmapa, Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche, Khunu Lama Tenzin Gyaltsen, and his father, Kyabje Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche. In 1974, Rinpoche left India to join his parents in Kathmandu, Nepal, where he assisted them in establishing Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery. Upon its completion in 1976, H.H. the Karmapa enthroned Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche as the monastery's abbot. To this day, Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling remains the heart of Rinpoche's ever-growing mandala of activity.

We prize knowledge, and rightly so. We think of ignorance as a bad thing. But ignorance is inseparable from what we know.Knowledge can distract us, mislead us and endanger us. While ignorance is often the most fundamental insight about our human condition. Ignorance is not simply the opposite of knowledge, but a positive force with its own momentum that gives meaning to our lives. It drives scientific discovery, fosters creativity and can be psychologically helpful. That's why Rory Stewart wants to make a radical case for embracing ignorance. It drives scientific discovery, fosters creativity and can be psychologically helpful. That's why Rory Stewart wants to make a radical case for embracing ignorance. He wants to encourage a way of knowing in which knowledge and ignorance exist in a relationship with each other. With a cast of global thinkers, drawing on Western and Eastern ideas from the ancient world to the present day, Rory explores how a greater awareness and appreciation of ignorance can help us become more clear-thinking, humble, empathetic and wise. Do you sometimes struggle to stay focused and aligned in a busy world? I am so excited to share a conversation today about living in the messy reality, all whilst pursuing a life and business filled with spiritual wisdom. For me, blending strategy and energy has been fundamental to my success AND freedom, so I am thrilled to bring my amazing guest to you today. Sarah Beth Hunt is the creator of Messy Luminous Being, a meditation and yoga platform with a podcast, online journal, and memberships that help women weave inner practices into messy real life. Sarah has trained in the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhist meditation, traditional yoga, and the school of messy real life with her partner & two beautifully wild boys. In this episode you will learn: >> How to open your mind to the soft whisper of intuition >> Practical tips on how to bring spiritual practices into your everyday life >> The beauty of breathwork and meditation, even when you don't have much time >> How vital it is to acknowledge the potential we all have for a negative mindset and behaviors and to make a conscious choice not to ‘feed this wolf'. It's hard to remember sometimes that the most important thing is who are ARE. Sarah Beth shares the idea of impermanence that's central to Buddhist teachings, and how critical it is to realize that what we will take with us are not the things we have, but the energy we create. The outside world constantly gives us opportunities to grow and develop our energy and as we grow, we attract the things and people we become more aligned to. And you just can't fake that energetic frequency! Many people out there are doing the same thing as you, but when it comes to resonance you are unique. You need to find the clients who are tuned in to you. Enjoy the listen! __________________________ Sarah-Beth's Ebook, Forward From Here: spiritual vision in pandemic times, is available here. His Holiness, the sixteenth Gyalwa Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje (August 14, 1924 – November 5, 1981) was the spiritual leader of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism and part of the oldest line of reincarnate lamas in Vajrayana Buddhism known as the Karmapas whose coming was predicted by the Buddha in the Samadhiraja Sutra. The 16th Karmapa was considered to be a "living Buddha" and was deeply involved in the transmission of the Vajrayana Buddhism to Europe and North America following the Chinese invasion of Tibet. He had many monikers, including “King of the Yogis”.
Ushnisha Vijaya, also known as Namgyelma in Tibetan, is one of the most beloved and widely practiced buddhas in Mahayana Buddhism. Why do Vajrayana Buddhists rely on the life-affirming, long-life Buddha Ushnisha Vijaya to support health and auspicious long life? What sutra, taught by the Buddha, contains the teachings on Ushnisha Vijaya and her Dharani? How can we meditate on Ushnisha Vijaya and bring her blessings into our life? We explore these questions in this short documentary on her beloved practice, followed by a short guided meditation with her beautiful long-life mantra, chanted wonderfully by Hrishikesh Sonar. In Vajrayana Buddhist tradition, the Yidam and your mind are inseparable. By visualizing the perfection of glorious long-life Ushnisha Vijaya, we connect our mind with her life-affirming, healing power. We empower our own prajna, or life force to rejuvenate our cells and heal our current physical bodies and minds. Ushnisha Vijaya, as our Yidam — or meditation deity —empowers our healing and long life by providing the perfect template — in Buddhist terms, mandala — to energize our own bodies to heal.Ushnisha Vijaya's practice was taught by Buddha Shakyamuni in the sutra, Usnisihavijaya Sutra, which contains her long Dharani, and the shorter mantra beautifully chanted here by Hrishikesh Sonar.Uṣṇīṣavijayā is considered to be very important throughout the four major lineages the Sakya, Gelug, Nyingma and Kagyu. All regard Her practice as very precious because it clears away the obstacles to life. Also, ultimately, it purifies our own obscurations, our negative karma.” according to the 8th Garchen Rinpoche.Ushnishavijaya translates as Victorious Crown Goddess. She is one of a trinity of long-life Buddhas, including White Tara and Amitayus. Why are long-life Buddhas popular practices?Long-life Buddhas are very popular for good reason. With long life and good health, is the opportunity to practice Dharma. This is especially important in the case of our Buddhist teachers — their long lives benefit so many beings. Yet, equally, for ourselves, not because we cling to this Samsaric life, but because long life and health are conducive to a dedicated Dharma practice.Meditate along with us now, half-closing your eyes to meditate on Emptiness, and glimpsing none other than Ushnisha Vijaya. Visualize her in front of you, with healing white-golden light leaving the crown ushnisha of her head and entering your own crown, filling you with life-affirming light. Feel her healing blessings and warmth.See the glorious image of Ushnishavijaya, in front of you, the colour of an autumn moon, with three faces, white, yellow and blue and eight hands. Each face has three very large eyes. The first right hand holds a vishvavajra, a double vajra, her second hand holding a white lotus with Amitabha Buddha enthroned. Her third hand holds an arrow and the fourth in hand is in the mudra or gesture of supreme generosity. Her first left hand holds a vajra lasso. Her second left hand holds a bow. Her third left hand is in the gesture or mudra of bestowing protection, and her fourth left hand is in the gesture of meditative equipoise, and holding an auspicious nectar vase. She is beautifully adorned with silks and jewel ornaments, and seated in vajra posture.Holding the beautiful image of Ushnisha Vijaya, visualize the healing white-golden light from her crown entering your own body, reinforcing your lifeforce, your chi or prana. Her power, her healing light is removing all your negativities and your obstacles. Her healing light is strengthening you and healing you. Her blessings are filling you with lifeforce.Chant the beautiful mantra of Ushnisha Vijaya allowing the sacred syllables to empower you. Chant along now with Hrishikesh Sonar: Om Brum Svaha Om Amrita Ayur Da Dai SvahaSupport the show

Meet meditation teacher Willa Blythe Baker. Willa is an authorized Lama in the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, and author of our new favorite book: The Wakeful Body: Somatic Mindfulness as a Path to Freedom. She guides us in a practice called GROUND – an acronym that describes progressively more subtle and expansive "layers" of somatic experience. We drop from the physical body, to the subtle body, and finally into the causal or nondual “body” of awareness itself. For Willa, the whole process is about “waking down” – in her words, “metabolizing, not transcending.” We also explore how to work with trauma in our body, and what it means to genuinely “befriend” our experience. Willa's 15 minute GROUND practice starts at 7:57 and ends at 23:12. Links:• Willa's book: https://www.shambhala.com/the-wakeful-body.html Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/explorerspod)
