"...Bake a dozen unique biscuits..." is this week's signature challenge. Lisa and Allison discuss how the bakers really ran with it, producing completely unique bakes with very little constraints. The girls discuss Jo's usage of lavender, and whether the judges' harsh critique was accurate. Lisa asks Allison to name her favorite cookie, and instead Allison guesses Lisa's correctly. The girls discuss the technical and Lisa shares her Mary Berry brandy snap recipe, sans brandy. Lisa then wonders about the result of filling the snaps with cream ahead of time. The girls discuss the bake show's "macaron" evolution, and touch on bringing back the funeral biscuit. Joe was out on one of his daily runs when he saw a couple getting a little too intimate in public... have you ever caught someone doing it in the act?
Tonight, we'll read the section on baking cookies from “Woman's Institute Library of Cookery Volume 4”, written by The Woman's Institute of Domestic Arts and Sciences. The Woman's Institute was founded by Mary Brooks Picken in Scranton, PA. Born in Kansas in 1886, Picken wrote the first dictionary to be published by a woman in the English language, beyond the over one hundred other books she wrote. The word "cookie" comes from the Dutch word "koekje", which was Anglicized when the Dutch brought cookies to America in the late 1620s. The old fashioned spelling for cookies has the word ending with a “Y” instead of “ie”. The “ie” spelling became dominant in the 1950s, except where the older “y” spelling was still used in some prominent titles, such as “Betty Crocker's Cooky Book”. This was likely a result of the colonial revivalism happening at that time, with greater interest in old-fashioned recipes and colonial culture that lasted from the 1920s to the Bicentennial of the 1970s. — read by 'V' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! Welcome to today's episode of the podcast where we have the pleasure of introducing you to Bader, also known as llunr, a multitalented artist who is a singer, songwriter, producer, composer, and musician. But what makes Bader's journey unique is the fact that he initially studied Risk Management at university. It was during his time there that he got the opportunity to be a radio host, and that's when music showed itself to him. Bader had always been a fan of writing, but he never had the outlet until he picked up the guitar and taught himself how to play. This became a way for him to express how he was feeling, and he fell in love with presenting on the radio. After his time there, he joined a another company as a copywriter, but as time went on, things became redundant, and Bader felt drained by his full-time job. He realized that it was hindering his creativity and decided to quit his job to become a full-time artist. Of course, any significant change comes with its own set of challenges. Leaving a stable job, especially in our Arabic culture, can be daunting. But Bader emphasizes that struggles definitely cause some form of creativity and encourages aspiring artists to be themselves. He believes that if you try to be someone else, you won't be able to keep up with it. One of the critical things that Bader discusses is promoting your work and creating the mood with each track. He emphasizes the importance of being yourself That is where I challenge him and ask him "Who he really is?" (P.S loved his genuine answer there) Bader also shares some tips on how to build a following and gain an audience to listen to your music. We also talk about the mindset that he had to build up to get to where he is now. He admits that he thought about quitting many times, but it was his passion for music that kept him going. Finally, Bader answers the well known question by now, which is what success means to him and how he defines it in his life. If you want to know more about Bader's journey and follow his work, you can find him on Instagram (llunrmusic) Thank you for tuning in to this episode of the podcast, and we hope you enjoyed getting to know Bader and his inspiring story!

" Ain't no destination. We just keep journeying." – Zahra Alabanza Kinship care has been the method of choice when children are unable to reside with their biological parents. However, this is not always the best or DESIRED option, especially when children don't know certain sides of their family and/or there is a perception that one's family hasn't shown up for them in times of need. This is the conundrum Zahra Alabanza found herself in at the age of 12, after being kidnapped by her father, abandoned, and spilt up from her siblings. Although there were challenges along the way, the girl grows up and makes the best of the cards she's been dealt. Just when Zahra is living her absolute best life in these Chi-Town streets, she finds out that her nephews have been placed in the foster care system. This is a full circle moment for her, and despite not being the “cookie-baking” type, she decides to raise her nephews, and reimagines what motherhood and family constellations can look like. Zahra's lifelong preparation coupled with her professional expertise as a social worker provides revelations and stark lessons for us about how to play chess, not checkers, when it comes to foster care system and deciding to formally adopt your kin. Listen in and listen up to this story about loss, grief, grace, compassion, and a continuous journey toward healing so that one doesn't repeat generational trauma. It's our 30th episode and it's less than a week before Christmas is here! We wanted to kick off the last part of this holiday season by sharing a few of our favorite traditions during this time of year. This mini-episode dives into all the best things like decorating, baking cookies, sending out holiday cards, and finding awesome presents for our loved ones. Sarah's Favorite Christmas Traditions Christmas Eve in my family is the day we exchange all the gifts. But it's really the wrapping paper that is part of our tradition, as every year without fail someone in my family will start a wrapping paper fight. We crumple up the paper and toss it at our unsuspecting family members, and before you know it everyone is joining in. Christmas Day is more relaxed for me, I'll spend time with my mom and we will typically go to the movie theater to watch a movie, because hey, they are open on Christmas Day! But even before Christmas it's part of my tradition to set up the Christmas tree and all the decorations the day after Christmas. The tree can sometimes be a bit of a process, but I have fun creating something new with it every year. I also love to bake cookies while singing Christmas carols and watch Christmas movies - Hallmark channel is usually always on during December. I love the feeling that Christmas gives and all the lights, it is just a very magical time of the year. Shaunae's Favorite Christmas Traditions For me, it's all about the decorating. The day after Thanksgiving it's down into the basement to pull out all the holiday decor. That entire weekend is dedicated to making our home feel festive and cozy. I get pretty serious about gift giving too. I work on my list all year and love to surprise my family members, friends, and clients with something special. We even send out Christmas cards to everyone too! This is truly my favorite time of year and I couldn't just pick one favorite tradition. I really enjoy it all, even those cheesy Hallmark movies. I cannot get enough! Side note: We'll be taking the next two weeks off to rest, recharge, and plan some awesome new content for 2019! Our next new episode will be live on Wednesday, January 9, 2019.
