Following this story from Erin Couch and Dan Horn - https://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/mlb/reds/2024/09/30/pete-rose-dies-henderson-county-nevada-cause-of-death/75460666007/ Cincinnati Reds legend Pete Rose was found dead at his home Monday in Clark County, Nevada, according to officials there. The Clark County coroner's office could not immediately be reached and the county spokeswoman who confirmed Rose's death provided no other details, including the cause of death. ABC News reported that a family member found Rose and said the county medical examiner indicated there were no signs of foul play. The ABC News report also said Rose, 83, had not been in the care of a doctor at the time of his death. Rose's home is being examined and the cause of death remains under investigation. Although there was no indication Rose had been seriously ill at the time of his death, Rose said in 2018 court filings connected to his divorce that he was "in poor health and disabled." In that same divorce case, Rose's lawyers said he struggled to walk, was on blood thinners and had undergone three heart procedures in five years. Pete Rose, who died Monday at his home in Nevada, at a press conference in 2015 at the Pete Rose Sports Bar and Grill in Las Vegas. Despite those health problems, Rose maintained a busy schedule and continued to travel all over the country, often to sports memorabilia shows. A Facebook post Monday from the Music City Sports Collectibles and Autograph Show in Tennessee featured a photograph taken Sunday of Rose sitting in a wheelchair, surrounded by several of his teammates from his days in Cincinnati with the Big Red Machine. He died the next day. "Amazing that they all got to see each other one last time," the post said. Earlier this year, in April, Rose canceled an appearance at former UC basketball coach Bob Huggins' annual fish fry charitable fundraiser in West Virginia "due to health reasons," according to a post on the event's Facebook account. "We're sending Pete our warmest wishes for a full & speedy recovery," the post said. The Cincinnati Reds also confirmed Rose's death in a statement late Monday. “Our hearts are deeply saddened by the news of Pete's passing,” said Reds' owner Bob Castellini. “He was one of the fiercest competitors the game has ever seen, and every team he played for was better because of him. Pete was a Red through and through. No one loved the game more than Pete and no one loved Pete more than Reds Country.” Though the all-time hits leader began his record-breaking career in Cincinnati and won two World Series titles here, he had lived in Nevada for years, near Las Vegas, where he owned a now-closed bar and frequently made paid public appearances and signed baseball memorabilia.
We had an exclusive live video interview with Andrew Ward, a celebrated former Muskegon Big Reds football player whose promising career on the field was unfortunately halted due to an injury. Despite this setback, Andrew didn't let his dreams falter. Leveraging his full-ride scholarship at a D1 college for education, he skillfully pivoted to a successful career off the field. We were excited to announce that Andrew had recently taken on the role of special events coordinator at Caesars Entertainment in Las Vegas. The Riverside Bulldogs are having a solid start to the season, going 4-1 through their first five games. In the Bulldogs most recent matchup against Missouri Valley last Friday, they came away with a scrappy 66-61 win. Riverside Head Coach Nick Kroon was happy with how his team responded to adversity. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Take-aways-from-MV.mp3 A key part to Riversides success early on in the season has been the offensive output from Grady Jeppesen. Jeppesen currently leads the team with 142 points, averaging 28 per game, and rebounds with 37. Coach Kroon has been impressed by Jeppesen's effort over the years. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Grady-J.mp3 Yet, Jeppesen isn't the only Bulldog earning praise and making an impact on his team. Other players are stepping up like Mason McCready. Last Friday he had 15 points against the Big Reds. Through five games McCready has 16 boards, 14 assists, and 6 steals. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Mason-Mccready.mp3 Riverside's next matchup is on the road against the 1-4 Audubon Wheelers Tuesday night. Coach Kroon is aware of the challenge that Wheeler senior forward Edward Miller poses. Miller averages 13 points and 8 rebounds per game. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Riverside-@-Audubon.mp3 The game will be streamed on KJANTV with the pregame beginning at 7:20 p.m.

This week on Inside the Headset, we are featuring Ferris State's Head Coach, Tony Annese. In this episode, Coach Annese reflects on last year's Division II National Championship run, details where his passion for teaching and leading young men came from, and highlights the importance of sharping your personal skillset. Tony Annese is entering his tenth season as the Head Coach for the Ferris State Bulldogs. During the 2021 season, Annese lead his team to their first national championship title in school history and ended the season with a perfect 14-0 record. During his tenure with the Bulldogs, Coach Annese has built one of the top programs at the Division II level. Since 2014, the bulldogs have won five Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles and have qualified for the NCAA Dividion II playoffs seven times. A proven winner at all of his previous coaching stops and highly-regarded across the country, Annese took over the Bulldog program following three impressive years as the head coach at Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC), which came on the heels of a highly successful 25-season stint at the prep level. While at GRCC, Annese was tabbed as the NJCAA Regional Coach of the Year all three seasons and led the Raiders to a three-year mark of 30-4 overall while winning two NJCAA Division II championships. The program finished among the nation's top 10 teams three-straight seasons and he coordinated all aspects of the program such as recruiting, player development, academic support and more. Prior to taking over at GRCC, Annese established himself as one of the state's premier coaches and a football mastermind in four stops at the prep level. He posted a mark of 195-41 in 22 seasons as a prep head coach at Montrose, Ann Arbor Pioneer, Jenison and Muskegon High Schools while making 15 playoff appearances and five trips to the state semifinals, including three state championships. In Annese's last stop as a prep head coach at Muskegon High School, he led the Big Reds to a 92-15 (.860) record in nine seasons and claimed three Division II state titles over his last five seasons in 2004, 2006 and 2008. All three teams finished unbeaten at 14-0 overall with his final team in '08 ranked fourth in the country. He was a National High School Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year finalist in 2009 and was tabbed as the MHSFCA Coach of the Year in 2004, 2006 and 2008. Called the heart and soul of The Big Red Machine, it was a shock when, 45 years ago this week, Cincinnati traded Tony Pérez to the Montreal Expos, breaking up their dynastic club. Why? Mike and Bill look back at Pérez's career and the changing economic structure that made the Reds think their hand was being forced. Plus, happy birthday to Charlie Blackwell and Art Howe! Later, Jacob Pomrenke (@buckweaver) rejoins the show to talk about the late, great Roland Hemond and his relationship with SABR.

Guy is a 1993 Muskegon Heights alumnus, who was starting point guard on the Tigers’ state-finals team that year. He spent 11 years working and coaching at his alma mater, nine of them as head coach. The 2019-20 school year marked his eighth as head coach and athletic director at Muskegon High School. In total, Guy has made nine trips to the final four as a player, assistant coach or head coach. He guided the Big Reds to a banner season in 2013-14, when they rolled to a Class A state championship and finished with a 28-0 record. The 1992-93 season was a special one for Guy and Muskegon Heights. The Tigers were ranked No. 2 in the state and made it to the Class B championship game at The Palace of Auburn Hills, where they lost to Saginaw Buena Vista, 69-52. Guy, a 5-foot-10 spark plug, finished with six points and five assists in the game. Maurice Sain, who is a longtime assistant coach on Guy’s staff, led the Tigers with 14 points and 12 rebounds in the ’93 title game. Guy has built Muskegon into a perennial power. The Big Reds have a string of conference and district titles going, and who knows what the 20-2 team in 2019-20 could have done, as its season was cut short because of the COVID-19 shutdown. @HoopsBigReds kguy@mpsk12.net --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kevin-furtado/support

On today's show, I welcome back Martins Ferry Times Leader Sports Editor Seth Staskey to talk about the 2004 Bellaire Big Reds. Seth covered every game of the magical run, which Gene Ammirante's team took the All-American town on. The season ended in heart-breaking fashion, much like its 1995 Division IV State Football Final, but not before the Big Reds gave its town something to remember. Bellaire finished the year (22-5) and made the school's first and only state tournament. Aaron Agnew would graduate and move on to Iowa State. Sophomore Nate Davis, who eventually was drafted in the 5th Round by the San Francisco 49ers, is currently 9th all-time on Ohio's scoring list and 7th in rebounds. He had Ball State (FB) in the Top 10, at one point, before losing to Buffalo. The team featured three players which scored 1,000 or more points (Agnew, Davis, and Mike Fisher). The Big Reds regular season losses included Upper St. Clair (featured Dallas Cowboy's Sean Lee), Logan Elm (featured Tyler Evans who hit the game-winner to allow Findlay to win the D2 National Title in 2009), Akron SVSM, and Wheeling Park. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
