Katie Fidler, director of real estate and investor relations with Drapac Capital Partners, joins host Carol Morgan on this week's Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio episode. In this podcast episode, Fidler discusses Drapac Capital Partners' unique approach to property investment and acquisition. What sets Drapac Capital Partners apart from other property investment groups? Drapac Capital Partners has built its strategy off quick problem-solving. The investment group seeks challenging projects that allow it to add or extract the most value. With a data-driven approach and focus on housing market statistics, it keeps tabs on everything from market population and cost of living to economic investment and job growth. Drapac Capital Partners looks at these demographics to understand the impacts of inflation rates and fluctuating market conditions. In addition, by comparing current housing market statistics with “steady state” rates, it can discover markets coming up with runway for growth, specifically in the Southeast. “We pride ourselves on being very disciplined,” said Fidler. “So for me, and for us, that is finding the balance between not being reactive but also being nimble enough to pivot when it proves best for a project.” Findler explains that Drapac specializes in creating “red-ribbon” packages with fully entitled and permitted projects ready for development. She calls them “shovel-ready” because they can begin at any moment. How is Drapac Capital Partners navigating the current economic environment? While the large “unknowns” make forecasting and planning difficult, Fidler assures that Drapac is approaching the environment as “cautious business as usual.” Fidler said, “We're not seeing the amount of panic that we did four to five years ago, but there's obviously hesitancy that we're seeing in the market.” Rapid shifts in the market have prompted many buyers to make quick purchases while spooking others. Drapac Capital Partners takes a more careful, thoughtful approach, securing deals in the process. All along the Southeast, it has scouted projects in Atlanta, coastal Georgia and the Carolinas. Fidler highlights that the Southeast is a source of immense growth, outpacing national growth by 40% over the last 50 years. There are many challenges that the housing market continues to face, from labor shortages and increased material costs to its finite amount of land that's suitable for residential development. However, Fidler points out that the opportunities outweigh the challenges. The state of the market leads some to sell, which allows the investment group to snatch those up and progress on planning and permitting until the market stabilizes. How is Drapac Capital Partners incorporating placemaking, and where? “Our goal is always to find that balance between what our buyers, who are mostly developers, and home builders want, which is usually high density with very low development cost,” said Fidler. “Then next step, what their home buyers are going to want, which are nice community amenities and spacious yards.” Drapac Capital Partners is largely in control of the planning phase, designing community elements and amenities that will ultimately facilitate increased absorption and pricing. Preserving natural landscapes is important for creating community greens and open spaces, which is why Drapac Capital Partners works with the existing topography. It also adds an appropriate mix of active and passive amenities based on a community's size. While it's not involved in the development stage, the investment group works to sell the project vision. Fidler describes a project in North Carolina as one of the investment groups' biggest wins. In 2012, it acquired a 1,000+ lot, master-planned community in Brunswick County, NC. The community was a victim of the Great Recession but transitioned into a major profit once the Drapac got its hands on it. As the market recovered,

Send us a textOn this episode of Shoresides, we dive into the hidden side of North Carolina's senior housing crisis. Coastal North Carolina has long been a retirement hotspot, but the influx of wealthy retirees has made it harder for lifelong residents to remain in their communities. While some seniors receive critical services like meal delivery and in-home care, others compete for the few affordable housing options left, often with younger renters and families. We'll hear from Casey Poplosky, an aging resource specialist at Brunswick Senior Resources Incorporated, who sheds light on the harsh realities seniors face: eviction due to rent hikes, long waitlists for in-home support, and limited access to shelters—some of which can't accommodate seniors with disabilities. Poplosky also discusses the need for more shelters, temporary housing, and greater collaboration among local agencies to address Brunswick County's growing senior needs.Join us as we explore how rising demand is straining resources and leaving some seniors sleeping in parking lots, while organizations struggle to provide solutions.Produced and edited by Nicolas MagrinoPhoto credit: Spencer PlattSupport the showwww.shoresides.org

Send us a Text Message. This episode of Shoresides delves into the growing affordable housing crisis in Brunswick County, North Carolina. We sat down with Sally Learned of Brunswick Partnership for Housing to learn more about challenges and solutions to affordable housing. Despite being employed, many residents are unable to make enough money to afford rent, forcing them into unstable living situations such as living in their cars, motels, or RVs. Doubling up in homes or couch surfing has become a solution for many people.Host Nick Magrino highlights a recent report from the National Low Income Housing Commission, which reveals that North Carolinians need to make nearly $4 more per hour than last year to afford a moderate apartment. Brunswick County, reflecting a national trend, faces an increasingly dire housing situation, pushing many wage earners into homelessness. This episode explores the community's struggle to secure affordable housing amidst these challenges, shedding light on a critical issue impacting everyday lives in coastal North Carolina.Produced and hosted by Nick Magrino. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Thomas Kelso, author of the book Fractured. Tom is a physician who also holds a Ph.D. from Washington State University School of Veterinary Medicine. He earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Following medical school Dr. Kelso completed his residency in orthopedic surgery and served in the US Navy for nine years before entering civilian practice. He writes thrillers based on current innovations in medicine and science and continues to practice orthopedic surgery in Brunswick County, North Carolina. In my book review, I stated that Fractured is a medical thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat the entire read. It features an orthopedic trauma surgeon, Mark Thurman, and a stem cell scientist, Claire Hodgson. The two have figured out how to grow bones and heal fractures in days. And their first patient, one who arrives in the ER, happens to be a former Navy SEAL sniper and a friend of Thurman. In fact, Thurman owes his life to John Bristow. Thurman's ties to Bristow and the SEALs, as well as his involvement as a trauma professional with the local police force, quickly entangles him - and his colleague - in a world of intrigue. Who tried to kill John Bristow - and why? More importantly, will Thurman's breakthrough be able to save his friend's leg, and will Thurman be able to save his friend's life? This is beautifully written and deserves the awards it has won. Kelso has definitely captured me as a reader. Not sure if it's ego or an insatiable sex drive, but many politicians are willing to risk their reputations and careers for a few moments of sexual gratification. That's been proven in the case of Donald Trump, who now must pay a total of $88.3 million to former writer E Jean Carroll as a result of his alleged sexual attack on her at Bergdorf Goodman's Fifth Avenue Manhattan store in 1996.On Friday, January 26, a jury ordered Trump to pay Carroll $83.3 million because of his continued social media attacks over her claims that he sexually assaulted her in the department store dressing room. Earlier, another jury awarded her $5 million for sexually abusing Carroll.“Absolutely ridiculous!” Trump said after the verdict. “Our Legal System is out of control, and being used as a Political Weapon.”Well, Donald, if you kept your zipper zipped and didn't believe you could do whatever you want to whoever you want whenever you want, perhaps you wouldn't now be scrambling to figure out what assets you'll sell to pay off the now 80-year-old Carroll. That $83.3 million verdict came down two days after we produced an episode of the Dixie Dems on the Lean to the Left podcast that includes discussion of two other separate political sexual escapades involving the now former Republican chair in Florida and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who is leading the prosecution of Trump and others for interfering in Georgia's 2020 presidential election.Early in January, the Florida GOP fired Chairman Christian Ziegler as police investigate a rape accusation against him, which Ziegler has denied. However, Ziegler and his wife, Bridget, admitted to police that they previously had a consensual three-way sexual relationship with Christian Ziegler's accuser.Meanwhile, in Georgia, Willis has been accused of having an inappropriate relationship with Nathan Wade, a special prosecutor she hired to handle the elections case against Trump. She has defended her hiring of Wade and has not directly denied a romantic relationship. A Trump defense attorney is seeking to use that accusation to have Willis and Wade removed from the case and the indictment thrown out."From what I understand, Trump's current fixer Is the one that drummed all this BS up and it's enough BS to where they got it in front of the right judge and apparently they're going to go back and pull some stuff out of a divorce decree or whatever, but literally it's the same old MO," says Robert Thompson, founder of Peach News Now and its opinion podcast, Got Damn Liberals," on the episode. In 1988, the Virginia legislature declared Brunswick County the home of the famous Brunswick stew. That hasn't cooled long-simmering tensions between the town near the North Carolina line and its competitor in Brunswick, Georgia. But Brad Kutner caught up with Governor Glenn Youngkin to get his excellency's opinion on the matter.

The Republicans are in a real mess in Congress and Donald Trump's continued dominance in the GOP presidential sweepstakes is only complicating matters, so in this episode of the Dixie Dems, we take a look at the drama in the GOP Trump world and how it's unfolding. There's a lot to talk about, from the debacle of the Republicans' drama of picking a new speaker of the House of Representatives and controversies surrounding him, to continued drama in Trump world with former allies flipping on him in court, jockeying among Trump challengers, to a Supreme Court case based on Trump's “size” or lack thereof, a new Democratic challenger for Biden, redistricting in both Georgia and North Carolina that could change the power structure in those states, and Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville blocking a bunch of military types being confirmed by the Senate because of abortion objections.Who are the Dixie Dems, you ask?If you've followed this blog and our podcast, you know that the Dixie Dems include myself, a Marylander transplanted into South Carolina and Lean to the Left podcast host, Arthur Hill, vice chair of the Brunswick County, NC Democratic Party, and Robert Thompson, founder of Peach News Now and its opinion podcast, Got Damn Liberals. Here are the highlights of this episode as we review the drama in the GOP Trump world that continues, seemingly, to worsen by the day:Trump court cases: Ellis pleading guilty in Georgia…Others include former Trump lawyers Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro, plus the guy who put up bail money for Trump, Atlanta bail bondsman Scott Hall. What's this mean for Trump?Mark Meadows: Trump is pissed at his former chief of staff Mark Meadows over reports that he might flip on him in the 2020 election case against him. On Truth Social, Trump called people who cut deals against him with the prosecutors “weaklings and cowards.”Trump Challengers – Trump continues to dominate the GOP sweepstakes, but things are starting to thin out with Pence dropping out and reports indicating that SC's Sen. Tim Scott could be next, as SC's Nikki Haley appears to be overcoming DeSantis as number two.Jennifer Rubin writes in the Washington Post, “Her “path” — so slim, it's more akin to a thread — to victory would go like this: Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), short on money, follows former vice president Mike Pence in exiting the race. In a signal to the “normal” GOP crowd, both endorse her. Haley finishes second in Iowa and/or New Hampshire, chasing out former New Jersey governor Chris Christie and making it impossible (if he is still in the race) for DeSantis to continue. She then gets to be the single alternative to Trump. (There is no sign that Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin or Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp are going to wage a campaign.)And then? Well, Rubin writes, “that's where things get murky, to say the least. Simply being better than all the clumsy, weak, unprepared and obnoxious alternatives still leaves Haley facing the overwhelming favorite of the GOP base. This is not 2016, when Trump could get by with winning 35 percent or so of the early primary electorate to beat back a crowded field. This time, he's got roughly a 30 percent lead in Iowa in the Des Moines Register poll and about the same in CNN's South Carolina poll.”New Biden Dem Challenger: Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips has announced that he's challenging Biden for the Democratic presidential nomination, saying that the party needs to look to the future, and, of course, Phillips, 54, would like to be that future. Who is this guy, anyway?(He's a 54-year-old, third-term congressman from Minnesota, where he represents the suburbs west of Minneapolis. The millionaire Phillips was heir to his family's distilling company, and he also led the gelato manufacturer Talenti. He's Jewish, and he's argued in the wake of the Israel-Hamas conflict that the U.S. needs to support Israel, although he backs a two-state solution long-term. In Congress, Phillips has been a fairly moderate member of the House Democratic caucus. He falls to the right of about 80 percent of his party colleagues in VoteView.com's ideological data, and he belongs to the center-left, business-oriented New Democrat Coalition and the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus.) Stalking horse for somebody else who might have a better chance? Damage to party?Trump's Size: Hilariously, the U.S. Supreme Court actually is hearing a case involving issues of Donald Trump's size – and I'm not talking about his obesity. Some guy in California wants to trademark the phrase “Trump Too small” for use on T-shirts and elsewhere. Georgia Redistricting – Positive developments as the result of a new Supreme Court decision that could mean additional Democratic representation in Congress.NC Redistricting – Negative developments following changes in the political makeup of the state legislature that are expected to cost Democrats at least a couple of seats in Congress.Tuberville Military Holds – The case of Sen. Tommy Tuberville of alabama blocking nearly 400 military officers from being confirmed by the Senate, pissing off members of his own party, who say he's jeopardizing national security. It's all about Tuberville's objection to the Pentagon's policy of paying for travel when a service members must go out of state for an abortion or other reproductive care.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

It's all about Tuberville's objection to the Pentagon's policy of paying for travel when a service members must go out of state for an abortion or other reproductive care. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4719048/advertisement

October seemed like a good time for an installment of Six Impossible Episodes all about ghosts and hauntings. Hey guys, welcome to the Lean to the Left podcast. Today we're talking politics, and with me are Arthur Hill, from North Carolina, and Robert Thompson, from Georgia. I'm a Maryander transplanted into South Carolina, and together we're the Dixie Dems.Arthur is communications chair of the Brunswick County, North Carolina, Democratic party. Robert is based in Atlanta and founded Peach News Now and its opinion podcast, Got Damn Liberals. Me, I do communications work for the Horry County, SC Democratic Party in addition to hosting this podcast and producing the Lean to the Left blog site.Today, it's all – or at least mostly – about Georgia and the latest indictment of Donald Trump. Many experts say this could be the most serious of the four separate cases in which Trump has been indicted. Robert…you're living the dream in Georgia. Fill us in on what's happening there. Why is this case, with 13 charges against Trump, perhaps the most serious threat to his freedom compared to the others in which he has been charged. What's your take on the Fulton County prosecutor, Fani T. Willis?Because these are state charges, Trump couldn't pardon himself if elected president. But could he be pardoned by the Georgia governor, the Republican, Brian Kemp?Former Trump lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, said the Georgia charges had “the purpose of framing President Donald Trump and anyone willing to take on the ruling regime.” Another Trump lawyer, Jenna Ellis said “The Democrats and the Fulton County DA are criminalizing the practice of law.”Then, she added, “I am resolved to trust the Lord and I will simply continue to honor, praise, and serve Him.” That was on X (or Twitter). “The lord will protect you as well as he protects us from gun violence,” responded another Xer. What do you guys think about that? How are Georgia Republicans responding to all of this? Incredible that polls still have Trump dominating in the race for the GOP presidential nomination. Also incredible that some of Trump's rivals are echoing his attacks on Prosecutor Willis. DeSantis called the indictment against Trump “an example of this criminalization of politics.” These characters who supposedly are seeking the GOP presidential nomination, but really are angling to win Trump's nod for the vice-presidential nomination…don't they see what happens to people who line up with Trump? For some, it's been the death knell for their careers; for others, it's federal prison. You'd think they'd run as far away from this guy as possible.Seems to me that former Georgia lieutenant governor Geoff Duncan showed some integrity, though, saying that GOP voters should “hit the reset button,” adding, “To think that we are going to stand behind somebody that's in that level of trouble—times four—is ridiculous,” he said. He was one of the state officials Trump contacted urging them to reverse his Georgia loss.Did you guys hear about Trump's new campaign ad attacking the three prosecutors who have charged him with felonies, as well as NY AG Letitia James who sued the Trump family and organization on charges that they engaged in widespread fraud?More than half the 60-second ad focuses on Willis, and according to Washington Post fact checkers three of the four claims made in the ad are false. Trump has until August 25 to surrender at the Fulton County Jail for booking, and apparently will have his mug shot taken and be fingerprinted. Think about this…it was about a year ago, last June, that Trump was trying to get his image on Mount Rushmore with Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Jefferson. Now, probably the most famous of all Trump photos will be his mug shot, taken as a common criminal.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

This episode of All Things Judicial focuses on the life changing work of Recovery Courts located in Brunswick County. In the first of three segments, we are joined by recent recovery court graduate Dedriana Ruby Bryant and Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Jason Disbrow who discuss Ms. Bryant's journey through the Recovery Court process. In the second segment, Judge Disbrow shares about the structure, origin, and philosophy of the Recovery Courts. In the final segment, we hear excerpts from the recent Recovery Court graduation that was held on July 27 in Bolivia, North Carolina. "What I want folks to understand is that treatment courts work because it gets to the root of the problem," said Judge Disbrow on the podcast. "You're treating the whole person ... punishing someone for being addicted flies in the face of what I believe from a judicial perspective. I think they're worth it because everyone is worth trying to help."There are 71 Recovery Courts in 37 North Carolina counties. They are charged with handling chemically dependent individuals in adult criminal court, juvenile, and abuse, neglect and dependency cases. Recovery Courts also serve veterans and people with mental health issues who find themselves in court. The program offers individualized treatment plans which include counseling, supervision, drug testing, sanctions, and incentives for meeting recovery goals.
On this Dixie Dems episode of the Lean to the Left podcast, you'll hear Georgia Republican wacko Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene laud President Biden for all of the great work he's done since his election. Yes, that's true. In fact, so true that the Biden campaign has turned those comments by Greene into a killer TV ad.Also on this episode, you'll hear a Republican Congressman inside a couple's bedroom while they are preparing to have sex telling them they're not allowed to use contraception. Yep, that's right. It's an ad Democrats are running in Ohio, and while funny, it's a warning of how the GOP is trying to interfere with our personal lives on many fronts. All of that, plus discussions about the No Label party and efforts by some moderates to establish a bipartisan ticket to challenge Biden and the eventual Republican nominee, as well as key political issues percolating in southern states and nationwide.Remember, the Dixie Dems is the monthly podcast from Lean to the Left, which takes an irreverent look at politics in our region and nationwide. Joining me on the episode, as always, are Arthur Hill, from North Carolina, and Robert Thompson, from Georgia.Arthur is first vice chair of the Brunswick County, North Carolina, Democratic party. However, it was hot and thousands stood for hours to hear this man. Some even got sick from the heat. Incredible. At any rate, it was on the home-state turf of Haley and Scott, two long-shot candidates who are trying to wrest the GOP nomination from him.“2024 is our final battle,” declared Trump. “Under our leadership, the forgotten men and women will be forgotten no longer.” Same old message, reprised from his previous campaigns. Same old song. And the people lap it up.In North Carolina, Arthur Hill discusses a groundbreaking decision by the U.S. Supreme Court on gerrymandering, which he said Democrats were applauding as crucial to fair elections, both in the Tar Heel State and nationwide. In Georgia, Thompson discusses upcoming potential indictment of Donald Trump in the case involving the former president's ill-fated effort to convince state officials to simply "find" him the 11,000 votes he would have needed to carry the state in the 2020 election. IN THE NEWS:This weekend marked the beginning of the new fiscal year, although Virginia is beginning the new year without any budget amendments. That means that all the laws passed earlier this year are not funded. So while the government won't shut down, a whole host of new initiatives are simply not going to get moving until someone blinks in the negotiations.A few years ago, Dominion Energy donated to the campaigns of just about every member of the General Assembly. Then in 2018, a PAC called Clean Virginia, funded by a millionaire, became a counterbalance. Now the two sides are battling for dominance, and each side can claim some victories in the primary elections.Southside Virginia has the highest unemployment rates in the commonwealth. That's according to new numbers from the Virginia Employment Commission. Places like Petersburg, Emporia, Brunswick County and Danville have unemployment rates that are about twice as high as Northern Virginia. At the Watercooler:- The Koch machine is likely to fall in behind Ron DeSantis for President...which would mean dire things for Governor Youngkin's chances- Some of the strongest Democratic candidates to come out of the primaries--Russet Perry, Kimberly Pope Adams, and Susanna GIbson--all have one thing in common: they graduated from Delegate Danice Roem's Emerge Virginia earlier this year.TRIVIA: What were the other two British colonies that remained loyal (other than the Canadas)?Learn more at http://linktr.ee/JacklegMedia
We're back with another episode of Dixie Dems, the podcast from Lean to the Left that takes an irreverent look at politics in the south, as well as nationwide. We'll talk about candidates, Trump's legal troubles, Trump pardon talk, the big Supreme Court gerrymandering decision, and much more. --- Hey guys, welcome to the Lean to the Left podcast and the June 2023 episode of the Dixie Dems with my partners, Arthur Hill, from North Carolina, and Robert Thompson, from Georgia.Arthur is first vice chair of the Brunswick County, North Carolina, Democratic party. Robert Thompson is based in Atlanta and founded Peach News Now and its opinion podcast, Got Damn Liberals. Me…I'm based in South Carolina, the state where two Republican candidates are taking on Donald Trump in the Republican presidential sweepstakes. They, of course, are former SC governor Nikki Haley, former UN ambassador for Trump, and Sen. Tim Scott, the only African American GOP US Senator. Oh, it's also the state where Sen. Lindsey Graham, still sucking up to Trump despite his indictment for violating the espionage act in that classified records case, said of Trump: At least he isn't a spy. Good grief. So, welcome guys… Arthur…tell us about what's going on in North Carolina? Big state supreme court decision on gerrymandering, right? How about you, Robert. Looks like Trump's next legal challenge could come from Georgia, right? What's happening in South Carolina? With two GOP presidential candidates running against Trump, a big question is what would they do if elected about pardoning Donald Trump for his crimes? Well, Nikki Haley says she'd be “inclined” to pardon him even though his actions inciting the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol put first responders in danger. She dragged in the plea deal between the Justice Department and Hunter Biden, saying there's a double standard…one for Republicans like Trump and another for Democrats like Biden. Also, on Twitter, Haley accused Barack Obama of dividing America “by race and gender” because he took issue with her claim that America is not racist. Excuse me…but it was her old boss, Trump, who set out to divide America that way and was spectacularly successful. Haley should just shut up.By the way, while some support Haley for taking down the Confederate flag at the State House when she was governor, the Washington Post reported that she did so only after the massacre at a church in Charleston, where worshipers were murdered by a gunman, forced her hand. She previously had said the flag was “about heritage.”Meanwhile, when asked what he would do about a Trump pardon, Sen. Tim Scott avoided the question, but said he would “clean out” the Department of Justice. Where was he when Trump was using DOJ as his own personal police force? Please. What do you guys think about how the GOP candidates are twisting themselves into knots over a potential Trump pardon?Scott visited Myrtle Beach the other day trying to drum up support. He had a pretty good crowd, according to reports, but the problem was that while attendees said they liked him well enough, they still support Trump but would like to see Scott as his vice president. That's probably not what Scott wanted to hear, unless that's his angle, anyway. Could be Haley's angle, too, for that matter. As for Trump, he's scheduled to make his first visit to South Carolina since being indicted twice – on Saturday, July 1, at the city of Pickens, ahead of their Independence Day celebration. Can't wait for that one.Meanwhile, the U.S. Supreme Court, which earlier this month unexpectedly upheld a prohibition against racial gerrymandering in an Alabama case, has agreed to consider a lower court decision that struck down a congressional district as an illegal racial gerrymander. The lower court held that the congressional district – which includes Charleston – “constituted an unconstitutional racial gerrymander in violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment because race was the predominant factor in the adoption of the” plan. South Carolina Republicans asked the Supreme Court to take up the case and arguing that the Republican-led legislature took politics into consideration when drawing the map, not race.Given the Alabama decision, it will be especially interesting to see what the conservative-dominated Supreme Court will do. The results likely will have broad ramifications nationally. There was another development here in South Carolina…the city of Conway, not far from Myrtle Beach, passed a resolution declaring June to be Pride Month only to be met with a bunch of protesters, including pastors and evangelical Christians. But to their credit, Conway's mayor and city council stuck by their resolution, which said LGBTQ residents “deserve to feel safe and respected in their homes, neighborhoods, schools and workplaces.” Please tell me why that would be objectionable?Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

But to their credit, Conway's mayor and city council stuck by their resolution, which said LGBTQ residents “deserve to feel safe and respected in their homes, neighborhoods, schools and workplaces.” Please tell me why that would be objectionable? This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4719048/advertisement

The N. C. Forest Service Red Incident Management Team has assumed command of the Pulp Road Fire as of this morning. Today firefighters will be transitioning from active firing operations within the Green Swamp Nature Preserve to mopping up the fire's edge. Weather: A super fog event occurred overnight causing extremely low visibilities during the morning commute. A weak front will linger in the region through Monday with isolated showers and thunderstorms possible. A sea breeze from the southeast will increase winds in the afternoon and create gusts of 10-15 miles per hour. Rainfall chances increase Tuesday and Wednesday. Lingering smoke may have potential to mix with fog. Acreage: 16,000 acres; Containment: 0%; Personnel and Equipment: 81 total personnel Yesterday the firefighters continued firing operations and brought the fire to the edge of Highway 211 as planned. Due to the firing operations, the fire size increased from 11,500 to 16,000 acres. Fire acreage may fluctuate going forward due to better measurement data coming in from the field. “Now that we've completed firing operations, our main objective is to keep the fire in the block of the Green Swamp Nature Preserve. If we can accomplish that, then we will be able to put this wildfire to rest,” notes NCFS Red Team Incident Commander Greg Smith. Air quality: A Code Red air quality alert has been issued for Brunswick County. A Code Orange air quality alert has been issued for New Hanover County. Information on current air quality data for North Carolina is available at https://www.airnow.gov/. Closures: NC Highway 211 is closed between Little Macedonia and Camp Branch roads. Updates to road closures surrounding the fire is at https://drivenc.gov/. Due to the wildfire, the Green Swamp Nature Preserve remains closed. Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR): A “TFR” is in place at an altitude from the surface up to and including 1,500 feet, daily (24 hours) until further notice. Complete information is available at https://tfr.faa.gov/tfr2/list.html. Flying drones within a TFR area is unlawful. Flying a drone near or around a wildfire compromises the safety of pilots and interferes with firefighting efforts. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/carolinaweather/message
#northcarolina #southcarolina #weather #ncwx #scwx The Pulp Road Fire in Brunswick County has burned roughly 2,500 acres in the Green Swamp Nature Preserve as of 9 a.m., June 16. Thursday, June 15, firefighting personnel completed strategic firing operations to eliminate hazardous unburned fuels outside the fire area. Crews also mopped up some significant spotovers along Richardson Road. Firefighting personnel will continue strategic firing operations into the weekend while weather conditions allow. Significant smoke is expected for communities in and surrounding Brunswick County. Areas surrounding the Green Swamp Nature Preserve and northeast of Wilmington will experience the heaviest smoke impacts. Highway 17 and other corridors could be impacted with substantial smoke, resulting in low visibility and challenging travel conditions overnight and into Saturday. In the interest of safety, residents and commuters may want to consider allowing for extra travel time or plan to take alternate routes. The N.C. Forest Service is mobilizing its Red Incident Management Team to take command of the Pulp Road Fire. Currently, operational resources working this fire include multiple engine and tractor plow strike teams as well as aircraft providing aerial support. The public is reminded to keep drones away from wildfires. While drones provide unique opportunities for aerial video and imagery of wildfire activity, they are unauthorized. Flying a drone near or around a wildfire compromises the safety of pilots and interferes with firefighting efforts. There are no injuries and no structures threatened at this time. Due to the wildfire, the Green Swamp Nature Preserve remains closed
A "witch's brew" of GOP-sponsored political activity in Texas, Florida, Tennessee and other states across the nation tops the discussion in the April edition of the Dixie Dems on the Lean to the Left podcast, now streaming.Arthur Hill, first vice chair of the Brunswick County, NC Democratic Party and Robert Thompson, host of the Got Damn Liberal podcast based in Atlanta, GA, join Lean to the Left host Bob Gatty to discuss these key developments and more.In their crosshairs are efforts by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to restrict abortions, what books can be read and topics that can be taught in the state's school, new legislation infringing on the rights of LGBTQ+ and transgender individuals, Donald Trump's legal problems, and the defection of a Democratic state lawmaker to the Republican Party in North Carolina, among others. In one section, Thompson points out that because of GOP efforts to restrict abortions that vasectomies are on dramatically increasing as many men are concerned about the consequences of impregnating someone and then having to live with the consequences. The conversation also turns to unbridled development in Florida, North Carolina and other states that's in response to large numbers of people, especially retirees, who are seeking low taxes and warmer weather. However, in Florida, Thompson notes, property and casualty insurance rates are skyrocketing even as the state has enacted tort reform that makes it more difficult for plaintiffs to win settlements in courtTrump's legal challenges and his pledge to run for the presidency even if convicted of a crime are also covered, along with his challenge by U.S. Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) and former SC Gov. and UN Ambassador Nikki Haley. Thompson observes that country icon Dolly Parton "wants to see more boobs in the White House."Gatty pointed out that Dr. Pamela Gurley, in a new blog for Lean to the Left, discusses DeSantis-initiated legislation that would make it a crime to record videos of police officers as they arrest individuals. If passed, that legislation would impose a five year prison sentence on those who record such videos, a clear First Amendment free speech violation. That blog and a podcast interview with Dr. Gurley will post and stream on April 26.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

Hey guys, welcome to the Lean to the Left podcast and the March 2023 episode of the Dixie Dems with my partners, Arthur Hill, from North Carolina, and Robert Thompson, from Georgia.Arthur is communications chair of the Brunswick County, North Carolina, Democratic party. Robert Thompson is based in Atlanta and founded Peach News Now and its opinion podcast, Got Damn Liberals, which is worth a listen.Me…I'm based in South Carolina, home of GOP Trump acolytes, Sens. Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott, one of whom got wiped out in his bid for the 2016 GOP Presidential nomination and the other for whom a similar fate awaits in 2024.Today, we take a look at what's happening politically in our three states as well as nationwide…One of the highlights of this episode is a discussion about the presidential candidacy of Nikki Haley, former SC governor and UN ambassador in the Trump administration. Arthur Hill says Haley "scares" him and predicts she will rise in the polls to become a serious contender for the Republican nomination, even though she's currently in the low single digits in the national polls."I think she's only four or 5% in the polls, but that's because most people don't know who she is," Hill says, "but I think she, has the ability to rise in the polls. I don't know. And, I think Trump's in free fall. I don't see him being as big a factor in the primaries as he has been in the past."About Haley, Hill adds, "To be perfectly honest, she scares me. She's, intelligent. She's she's attractive. She represents a clear alternative to Trump and DeSantis. And I think Pence isn't going anywhere. So I, think that if Republicans who are looking for somebody to ally with that are repelled by Trump and DeSantis, you've got Nikki Haley standing out there waiting in the wings to to increase her popularity."And, it's really early that not too many people outside of South Carolina know about Nikki Haley and even though she's got a track record. She's a governor, she's a former ambassador to the UN. So she's got chief executive chops and she's got international relations chops."I think once the word starts getting out around her I, let me be clear. I'm not supporting Nikki Haley for President , but but I am saying that I think she could be a formidable candidate in a general election." There's much more in this episode, with discussions about "anti-woke" initiatives in numerous states, prospects for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, and much more.Take a listen.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

Jim Jordan, the newly minted GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley, and many others. The episode includes our observations about the U.S. taking down those unidentified flying objects in February, including the so-called Chinese spy balloon, that was knocked out of the sky by a U.S. fighter jet on Biden's orders, as well as a double murder trial in South Carolina in which a longtime big shot lawyer is charged with killing his wife and son, and another trial featuring so-called Tiger King "Doc" Antle. So, there's lots to take in on this episode. We're back with another episode of Dixie Dems, the podcast from Lean to the Left that takes an irreverent look at politics in the south, as well as nationwide. TToday, we'll offer up some prognostications for 2023 as well as take a look at some of the key political developments in our three states, and if our comments turn nationally, don't be surprised. With me are my partners, Arthur Hill, from North Carolina, and Robert Thompson, from Georgia. Arthur is communications chair of the Brunswick County, North Carolina, Democratic party. Robert Thompson is based in Atlanta and founded Peach News Now and its opinion podcast, Got Damn Liberals, which is worth a listen. Me…I'm based in South Carolina, home of Sens. Lindsey Graham and Uncle Tom Republican Tim Scott. So, welcome guys… First, let's get to the news. Arthur, what's happening in the Tar Heel State? (Where did that name come from, anyway?)How about you, Robert. You've got a lot of action there in Georgia, what with rabble rouser Marjorie Taylor Greene, the crazy one, apparently gaining influence and all.She had a “meeting in the ladies room” with Boebert to tell her she needed to join the swamp monsters – ironic That guy in Florida calling congress to get mccarthy elected Notice how nothing is being said about Nancy Pelosi? Because Republicans have to come up with a whole new narrative on hakeem jeffries GA embracing electric vehicles. And, hey, how about those reports that “John Doe,” a former staffer for the Hershel Walker campaign, has sued conservative leader Matt Schlapp for allegedly sexually assaulting him last October. The unnamed aide is seeking almost $9.4 million in damages. Schlapp is chairman of the Conservative Political Action Coalition and denies “any improper behavior.” See what happens when you get in bed with monsters? And who's heard from Herschel lately anyway?Exactly. What's happening in South Carolina? Well, the Democrats have had a defection – Sen. Mia McLeod, who unsuccessfully sought the party's nomination to run against Gov. Henry McMaster – has left the Democrats and is now identifying as an Independent. McLeod claimed her decision is because the state's Democratic party “no longer espouses the values my constituents and I hold dear.”“By not engaging, enlightening or expanding the electorate…refusing to publicize the June Primary and getting a historical top of the ticket ‘shellacking' on November 8, the party ensured a Republican super-majority and the losses of eight Black legislators in the S.C. House, five of whom were black women,” McLeod said. Her announcement sent shock waves through the party's establishment, many of whom derided McLeod for being a lackluster candidate and simply driven by political ambition. Tough for Democrats to win statewide in SC…really tough. The other big news in SC is in the state legislature, which now has a Republican super majority. And they show no signs of moderation. Already, more than a dozen bills have been introduced to attack LGBTQ+ people, and they're trying to get around the state Supreme Court's ruling that the state's extremely restrictive abortion law is unconstitutional. That law banned abortion after six weeks. The court said the law violates a state constitutional right to privacy. Gonna be interesting to see what happens, but my money's on McMaster and the Republicans to come up with some other draconian approach to deny women the right to control their own bodies.OK, Now for predictions: Robert…how about you first? The House will be even worse of a shit show Benghazi was nothing – if I hear one more thing about Hunter Biden and his laptop! The swamp will get choppy on a qwest to get to the craziest first – 23% national sales tax will fail I thought we were battling inflation? Extreme Mentally ill conservatives will continue to have access to too many guns and there will be more bloodshed. Medicare will be destructed more, $1k/mo to private insurers will be cut and/or traditional medicare will be gone. Social Security age will go up, benefits are already not keeping up with demands.Arthur?OK, I'll close it up with these predictions:If Republicans play their hard-line game regarding expanding the debt limit and America defaults on its obligations, we'll face a massive financial crisis and a 2007-like stock market crash.2. Attorney General Merrick Garland will seek to indict Trump on charges stemming from the January 6 insurrection and other nefarious actions. But Trump will somehow escape serious punishment.3. Biden and his Congressional supporters will be targeted by the Republicans who may even seek to impeach Biden, especially now that it's been discovered that Biden also took classified documents home when he was VP. It's going to be a tough year for House Democrats.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

Today on the December edition of the Dixie Dems on the Lean to the Left podcast we're taking a look at the mid-term election, Sen. Robert, what are your thoughts about how that turned out and what that means for Democrats there going forward. What do you guys think about Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona switching to Independent? Do you think this will have any lasting impact on what Dems can get done? Arthur, North Carolina is at the center of a redistricting case now before the U.S. supreme Court, Moore v. Harper. Can you tell us what's going on?The case stems from North Carolina Republican efforts to stack Congressional districts in their favor, so much so that a state court threw out the GOP map and enlisted a nonpartisan panel to come up with districts that are much fairer. Now that's been challenged by the NC Speaker of the House and other Republican lawmakers.Looking back at this past year, what do you guys think were the most significant political events…The Jan 6 hearings…the Midterm elections…The FBI Mara-lago raid? The Dixie Dems consensus: President Biden's ability to maneuver key legislation through Congress, despite intransigent opposition from Republicans, and his ability to hold the Senate for Democrats and avoid the "red wave" predicted in the House is the political story of the year.Take a listen:Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

There's a food security plan in development through NC State's Cooperative Extension in New Hanover County. There's a grass-roots volunteer project that collects food from neighbors for monthly porch drops. Mike Claxton offers observations from one of the larger food pantries in Brunswick County. Cierra Washington of the Northside Food Cooperative talks about a deeper approach to feeding people. These efforts are all making a real difference in peoples' lives in the Cape Fear region. And, yes, hunger persists in one of the wealthiest parts of North Carolina.

Today we're talking politics, and with me are my political pals, Arthur Hill, from North Carolina, and Robert Thompson, from Georgia, plus a special guest, Michael McDonald, from Florida.Arthur is communications chair of the Brunswick County, North Carolina, Democratic party. Michael McDonald is a nationally recognized expert on elections and national politics, and author of the new book, “From Pandemic to Insurrection: Voting in the 2020 US Presidential Election.”Michael is professor of political science at the University of Florida and a leading resource on American elections. His website, www.electproject.org, disseminates election statistics and is widely used as an authoritative source by media, scholars, and others. Michael was a guest on the Lean to the Left podcast a couple months ago, which why I conned him into joining us today. We each take a look at specific races in our respective states of South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina, and then we ask McDonald, who analyzes races nationwide, for his predictions about whether the Democrats can hold onto the Senate and the House. Essentially, he predicts that they will, most likely, retain control of the Senate, but are in real danger of losing the House. But, he hastens to add, things could change significantly between now and the election.Take a listen...Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

Political pundits Bob Gatty, South Carolina; Robert Thompson, Georgia; and Arthur Hill, North Carolina talk about gains Democrats are making as Republican candidates sputter, including those hand-picked by Trump. Will some red seats turn blue in those states, shocking as that may seem? Arthur is communications chair of the Brunswick County, North Carolina, Democratic party. He and I both worked in PR and as freelance writers in Washington, DC. And, we both worked on Capitol Hill, back in the day.Robert Thompson is based in Atlanta and founded Peach News Now and its opinion podcast, Got Damn Liberals. It's an awesome podcast, and he takes no prisoners. In our last episode, we revealed how he has a fettish with some blonde wacko from Georgia named Marjorie. So, welcome guys. There's a lot going on here in South Carolina, and a lot of it has to do with Republicans making news, like only the Horry County Republican Party can. For those of you who don't know, Horry County is home to the resort area of Myrtle Beach, but to the west there's a lot of rural area. And, for years, it's been dominated by Republicans. But today, those guys are in disarray, squabbling with the state GOP over its effort to prevent the MAGA crowd from taking over. This week, the entire county GOP leadership team resigned, including QAnon influencer Tracy “Beanz” Diaz, who was one of the five top-ranking members of the local party. Diaz's time with the HCGOP was plagued by drama, including infighting and a lawsuit against it by a local man who said he was assaulted at a QAnon event. The county GOP leadership complained that the state GOP was trying to silence “the true America First patriots,” and they promised to continue to fight to “expose the truth.”Meanwhile, the county Democratic party is working in unison on behalf of some great candidates for the state legislature, especially, Ashlyn Preaux, Ryan Thompson, and Ernest Carson. Against some strong odds, I think they have a real shot, and that would really shake things up.The county party is holding its biggest fundraiser, called the SHORE Dinner, later this month, and the proceeds will be used to help support Democratic candidates. And, then, of course, there is Sen. Lindsey Graham with his new bill to impose a nationwide abortion ban after 15 weeks – a proposal that the pundits say is doing nothing but divide the Republicans. We can talk about that later. Unfortunately, Graham is not up for reelection this time around. So, What's happening in North Carolina and Georgia? How about in other areas of the country where the Republicans have "crummy" candidates?Take a listen.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

Check out this episode of the Dixie Dems on The Lean to the Left Podcast, which is crashed by 'Marjorie," an impersonation of wacko Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene by Robert Thompson, who also hosts the Got Damn Liberals podcast. If you are confused by Thompson, who parrots MTG during the episode but also comments as the Democratic liberal that he is, you'll have an opportunity to get it all straight once the video version of this episode is finished and streamed on YouTube. That must be a comforting thought. As usual the Dixie Dems episode also features Arthur Hill, communications chair of the Brunswick County, North Carolina, Democratic party, who also contributes articles to this blog site. Arthur's blogs generally focus on various scams that he wants readers to be aware of, but he writes about politics as well. Arthur is the most serious of the Dixie Dems cast, as you can tell by his glasses. This episode of the Dixie Dems "covers" key aspects of the January 6 insurrection investigation, such as when a Trump staffer had to clean catsup off the wall because an angry 45 tossed his lunch; political developments in South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, and Florida; and the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on abortion rights and related issues. So despite the craziness that seems to always infect the Dixie Dems when they get together, the episode actually has some content worth listening to -- if you can manage to avoid confusion caused by Thompson's be-wigged "Marjorie".Take a listen:Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

Our conversation today is part of an ongoing partnership with the US Small Business Administration highlighting small businesses as well as offering advice and resources to small businesses. Our topic today was economic development in rural communities. We talked with John Fleming, Mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator for the US Small Business Administration and Alfreda Jarrett Reynolds, Director of Economic Development for Brunswick County, VA. John explained what the SBA is doing to support small businesses and economic development in rural communities. We talked about what constitutes a rural area and he told us how the SBA is providing more access to capital to rural communities through various loan programs. In order to provide rural small businesses with increased opportunities to access capital, the SBA created the 504 Loan Rural Initiative pilot program. This program waives some small business regulations in order to help rural development through the 504 Loan Program. Alfreda gave us information about GO Virginia - she sits on the council for Region 3 - which includes the Counties of Amelia, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Halifax, Henry, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Patrick, Pittsylvania and Prince Edward and the Cities of Danville and Martinsville. GO Virginia is a business-led economic development initiative with funding to invest in collaborative projects. Their goal is to bring more business, opportunity and high-paying jobs to the region. Alfreda shared some of the challenges that rural communities are facing in her county/region and talked about some of the basic business needs that rural communities are facing. She also told us about a few of the things are are working well for rural businesses and revitalization. For more information and access to SBA resources for rural businesses, click here. Bob Gatty from his Lean to the Left Podcast is based in South Carolina, moving there from Maryland a few years ago, and has since been involved in local Democratic politics – an uphill battle, if ever there was one. Joining us on in this episode is Arthur Hill, from North Carolina. I guess you could call us the "Dixie Dems", except that two of the three of us are NOT native southerners. Listener Supported https://www.peach.deals/sponsors Arthur Hill is communications chair of the Brunswick County, North Carolina, Democratic party, who recently wrote a book on the history of St. James, his hometown since 2014. Before he moved to the Tarheel State, he was a public relations professional and freelance writer in Washington, DC. Back in the day, Arthur also worked on Capitol Hill. So, while it's crazy in South Carolina with a Republican Congressman having to defend his vote to impeach Donald Trump against several rightwing candidates, one of whom was endorsed by Trump, it's even wackier in Georgia and North Carolina. At least SC doesn't have a Madison Cawthorn or a Marjorie Taylor Green! Now, with this apparent Roe v Wade decision that's been reported, it's probably going to get even worse. The discussion unwraps the draft abortion ruling and the political implications, ranges into the argument over what can and cannot be taught in schools, Republican candidate misadventures, Trump's influence, and much more. There's lots of insight, but plenty of laughs along the way, as well. As Hill says in the episode, "The Republicans sit on a hill with a flintlock rifle and say 'no,' but they have no new ideas." So that's just a sample of the tenor and tone of this conversation. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gdliberals/message

Locally, two people are safe after escaping a house fire Tuesday night. The Watauga Democrat reports the Deep Gap Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call on Don Hayes Rd. late Tuesday night. For reference, Don Hayes Road is right off US 421 as you're driving into Boone. The two occupants escaped the house fire and were treated by Medics and taken to Watauga Medical Center. Several rescue personnel responded to the house fire. Fire units were on scene until around 2 a.m. Watauga County Fire Marshall Shane Garland said the fire started from a chimney fire that extended into the structure. Around the state, WRAL reports eight people were indicted by a grand jury for voter fraud in a North Carolina county. District Attorney Jon David's office said investigators with the election board presented several cases of individuals swearing falsely in a primary or general election to a Brunswick County grand jury last week. As of Tuesday evening, two arrests have been made. In a news release, the district attorney said the defendants are all illegal immigrants or convicted felons. The Brunswick County's Sheriff's Office continues working to serve arrest orders for those indicted. Nationally, NPR reports the family of Bob Saget filed a lawsuit in Orange County, Florida in an effort to stop the release of medical records related to Saget's death. The lawsuit was filed by Saget's widow and three daughters. It names Orange County Sheriff John Mina and the medical examiners' as defendants. The suit argues that the further release of Saget's medical records would cause the family to suffer irreparable harm in the form of extreme mental pain, anguish, and emotional distress. Saget, 65, was found dead in his Orlando hotel room last month. He died as a result of head trauma. Despite filing the lawsuit, Saget's family released a statement last week saying they are comforted and overwhelmed by the outpouring of love from his fans. Dr.Cecilia is a product of Self-Led Discipline and Leadership and what it looks like when applied again and again in life. She is a pediatric dentist today and she will share what it looks like from her vantage point to see parents and families that put leadership into their core values and how she used it throughout her own life growing up as a high-level competitive gymnast. About the Guest: Links Website https://ccfdkids.com (https://ccfdkids.com) Social Insta - @cece.in.the.ilm FB - @cecilia.liu.dds Bio I'm a native of North Carolina, born and raised. Growing up I was highly competitive in gymnastics and went on to compete in the collegiate level at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After graduating, I moved to Wilmington, NC, and started working in a dental office. I was a dental assistant for three years before going to dental school at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. During school, I served as the class president and also had the opportunity to travel to provide dental care to underserved populations. After graduating in 2013, I completed a one-year residency program in Honolulu, Hawaii, and during that time, I found a passion for pediatrics. After Hawaii, I moved to Las Vegas for pediatric residency at UNLV and served as the chief resident from 2015-2016. In 2016, after finishing residency, I returned back to southeastern North Carolina to join the amazing doctors at Coastal Cosmetic Family Dentistry as we opened up the first full-time pediatric dental office in Brunswick County, Coastal Pediatric Dentistry. Even though I finished all my official education in 2016, I'm still constantly striving to develop my knowledge in pediatric dentistry. I completed my board certification in pediatric dentistry in 2019 and continue to dive into continuing education courses every year to help me help parents raise their children to be the best version of themselves. Outside the dental community, I'm an active member of the Junior League of Wilmington, a nonprofit organization that empowers women to create positive changes in the community. More than four million people have lost electricity across the South, mostly in Texas, where an ice storm and bitter cold have forced rolling blackouts. The mayor of Austin, Steve Adler, joins us to discuss the difficulties facing his residents. A 9-11 style commission will be established to investigate last month's assault on the Capitol. There's been a dramatic downturn in coronavirus cases and deaths.
An unknown number of people were trapped after a tornado caused structural and home damage in Brunswick County, North Carolina late Monday night, the county emergency manager tells the National Weather Service. Before it was one of North Carolina’s most desired destinations, the setting of Nicholas Sparks’ “Safe Haven” or a quaint fishing village, Southport was supposed to be the first line of defense for the Cape Fear. The land that would become the Brunswick County getaway was originally designated as Fort Johnston in the 1740s, intended to protect the growing ports of Brunswick Town and Wilmington from Britain’s enemies. But the fort’s mighty vision never came to be. In this episode, we look at how, from that unrealized dream, a town blossomed around the remains of the fort after the Revolutionary War and grew into a popular respite for Wilmington’s residents. Over time and through at least three major wars, the community flourished into the town of Smithville, later renamed Southport in 1887 to try and court business and railroad attention flocking to Wilmington – all while remain a linchpin in the region. Joining the episode is Pat Kirkman, a 24-year member of the Southport Historical Society. Cape Fear Unearthed is written, edited and hosted by Hunter Ingram. Additional editing by Adam Fish. The Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) Program is the largest school based father engagement program in the nation with over 4000 schools participating. Live from Brunswick County, North Carolina, we will be talking to Pat Litzinger, Congregations For Children District Coordinator, Harbor District, NC Conference of The United Methodist Church. Many churches are reaching out to the public schools in their community outreach. Watch D.O.G.S. provides an opportunity to organizations within the school community including churches to serve local children without "re-inventing the wheel". Of course local school policy and practice dictates how this is managed, but the Watch D.O.G.S. program is a great foundation to build upon. We will also be joined by New Hanover County, NC Commissioner Jonathan Barfield and Top Dog Coordinator, Scott Diggs. Each week, WatchDOGS Radio host Keith Schumacher and co-host Chris Danenhauer discuss how this program is impacting families and schools across our nation and in four foreign countries. Please join our audience and call in with your questions and comments.
