Wrestling.... Strictly Business! For a Cincinnati high school wrestler, to qualify for the Ohio High School Athletic Association's State Wrestling Tournament is an arduous task at the very least. Attaining and maintaining a given body weight-class, wrestle-offs, intense practices, managing a disciplined approach to nutrition, continuing the in-season strength training and conditioning program goals, and of course..... lots of winning, especially in the district and regional tournaments that are along the way to Columbus, Ohio where the OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament is conducted at St. John Arena on the campus of Ohio State University. And that's the way it went for ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power Podcast guest Greg Strochinsky, a Cincinnati Oak Hills High School Hall of Fame wrestler who had the privilege to be coached by an Ohio High School wrestling coaching icon, Dick Roche. The coach, a stoic military veteran, was a strict disciplinarian who didn't veer off course too much when it came to following and enforcing rules. He was the Woody Hayes of Oak Hills High School who despised losing and demanded that his wrestlers felt the same. Conversely, Strochinsky was the loose, fun loving student athlete who oozed self confidence 24/7. His self-given nickname was ''strictly business', which he prominently displayed on his shoes, his pick-up truck, t-shirts, chains, etc. However, 'Stroh' shared the same desire for victory as did his coach. And, Coach Roche and Assistant OHHS Wrestling Coach Ken Hauck, a Championship Miami Redskin defensive lineman and former OHHS wrestler himself, knew that they had themselves a potential star in the making and didn't alter the "strictly business" mojo. Unlike a lot of today's high school wrestlers, Strochinsky never stepped onto a wrestling mat until he was a seventh grader. In fact, it was by chance that his junior high school gym teacher, Randy Owen, announced and encouraged the lanky twelve year old to explore the sport at an after school practice session. It wasn't long before the hook was set and Strochinsky was well on his way to becoming an Oak Hills High School wrestling star. Upon leaving junior high, he entered high school 10th grade, bringing a shiny winning record along in tow. Initially, Coach Roche wasn't greeting him with hugs and adulation. But, the two figures combined their passion for winning. Stroh felt a bond to Roche and never wanted to disappoint the legendary coach. Finally, as an undefeated senior and state qualifier making the two hour drive to Columbus and walking into an arena packed with thousands of wrestling fans and supporters, Strochinsky met the sting of defeat against a well skilled, experienced state meet opponent in the semi-final match. And, not one to sulk or mope from the loss, he'd only felt the emotions of thinking that he'd let his coach down. ... Coach Roche passed away at the age of 73. Greg Strochinsky became instrumental in starting the Dick Roche Memorial Scholarship which can be awarded to dedicated wrestlers from the school.

Athlete of the Week: Ryan Montgomery, Findlay High SchoolAlthough the sophomore sensation doesn't bask in his own numbers, they were still impressive. 333 passing yards and a career-high six touchdowns against Fremont RossFINDLAY, Ohio — "First and foremost, I do anything and everything just to win because that's the main goal," Findlay sophomore quarterback Ryan Montgomery said. "I don't care what the stats are, I just want to win at all costs."Montgomery proved that in Week 6 of the Ohio High School football season, leading the Trojans to victory over previously unbeaten Fremont Ross."That was a huge win, we needed that win for sure," Montgomery said. "We didn't start off too strong, struggling in different aspects of the game, especially on offense. We didn't find a groove yet and this game we really found what we're good at."While the sophomore sensation doesn't bask in his own numbers, they were still impressive. 333 passing yards and a career-high six touchdowns."I thought I played pretty well, but it's a team game. I couldn't have done anything without the other 10 guys on offense," Montgomery said. "My lineman played great up front, I didn't really get hit all game, the protection was amazing. Receivers made plays and just shoutout to all of them because I don't want to take all the credit because they played a huge role."Head coach Stefan Adams added "You did see the highest level of competitor come out of him a little bit more than usual. He wanted to make every single throw."Montgomery's talent has been center stage even before he reached high school. With two years still to go before graduation, he's already received more than a dozen Division One offers which include Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State & Toledo.Yet, you won't find this quarterback settling for anything."He loves to work. I think he truly believes that everything he does will help him to be successful individually and for his teammates as well," Adams said. "I've just been super impressed with his ability to put his head down and work."Effort that has lead to production and most importantly belief."I just love having the ball in my hands, I'm super confident in myself," Montgomery said. "Super confident in our offense and I know I can make plays, it really showed Friday night."Ryan Montgomery is our WTOL 11 Sports Athlete of the Week.

After an illustrious 26-year head coaching career, Thom McDaniels is still impacting the next generation of football players and coaches. Some may mostly know him as the father of New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and the University of Michigan quarterback coach Ben McDaniels. But Thom McDaniels himself truly has had a Hall of Fame career. He earned the USA Today and Nike National Coach of the Year award in 1997. You won't want to miss our latest conversation with Cincinnati Moeller head coach Carl Kremer. The 1978 Miami East grad has won 575 games in his 29 seasons with the Crusaders at a 79% winning percentage. Inside the episode: We talk about his summer adventure to Brooklyn for the 2019 NBA Draft to watch former Crusader Jaxson Hayes become a Lottery Pick. The early years where a kid named Bobby Brannen really set the tone for what Moeller basketball would eventually become making it cool to play hoops for the Crusaders. The state championships seasons of 1999, 2003, 2007, 2018, and 2019. Moeller became the first Division I school to go undefeated (2019) since Zanesville in 1995 and the first D1 school to go back-to-back since Canton McKinley in 2005 & 2006. The last big school to do so prior to McKinley and Moeller was Elder in 1973 & 1974. The runner-up finishes of 2005, 2010, and 2017. The seasons which got away. Moeller is currently riding a 49-game winnings streak with a sparkling (84-4) mark over the past three seasons. Last loss to an Ohio team on March 25, 2017 (Massillon Jackson, 39-38, in state final). Last loss to an Ohio team in the regular season was Cincinnati Elder on February 5, 2016. The Crusaders have won 20-plus games in 15 of the last 17 seasons. We discuss the culture at Moeller and what it takes to build a successful program for the long haul. Finally, Coach Kremer was passed up for a certain head coaching job in 1988 and was "devastated." However, I think it worked out! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Our latest conversation is with former Lexington and Mansfield Senior head coach Gregg Collins. We cover his career at both historic schools. Inside the episode: The 1986-1987 regional qualifier featuring three sophomores, who would become the centerpieces of what was to come. The 1988-1989 state championship season featuring Tom Scholl, Jeff Hoeppner, and Donn Restille. The 1990-1991 state championship season led by the great Jamie Feick, who would go on to play at Michigan State and for the Charlotte Hornets, San Antonio Spurs, Milwaukee Bucks, and New Jersey Nets. He would later become head coach at his alma mater (Lexington). We discuss why Coach Collins took some time off between coaching jobs. We finish the show talking about his great success at Mansfield Senior where his teams won 20 or more games in six of his 12 seasons at the helm and never won less than 15 contests. HIs 1999 and 2005 Tygers reached the State's Final 4 in Division I. After researching, we found the answer to a question posed on the podcast, which was who beat Willard in the 1989 tournament. The answer was Bowling Green (62-60). We joked about Willard beating Lexington in both of its championship seasons. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
My latest conversation with 2017 Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association Class of 2017 Hall of Famer, Dan Hegemier. This is a great show filled with history, stories, triumphs, defeats, and what it takes to be great. Coach Hegemier said Coach Bob Arnzen (Delphos St. John's) told him at the start of his career, "you have to surround yourself with great people" and the man with 524-career wins certainly did that. I mentioned Coach Hegemier's (74-2) run over a three-year span at Knoxville, and his response was what you would expect from a coach with three state championships. You won't want to miss this episode! Coach Hegemier's Profile: 524 wins 11 district titles 4 regional crowns 3 State Titles AP Coach of the Year (1993, 2007, & 2008) OHSBKA Coach of the Year (2007) Only coach to win a state championship at UD Arena, St. John Arena, and the Schottenstein Center --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Today, we turn back the clock, and talk with former Dayton Dunbar head coach Pete Pullen. We talk about his incredible 13-year run with the Wolverines, which saw Pullen guide his squads to four state titles in eight seasons and six trips to Columbus in 11 campaigns. Dunbar's run from 2005-to-2015 can rival any in Ohio history. State Champs (2006, 2007, 2010, & 2012)- 4 Regional Titles (2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2012, & 2015)- 6 District Titles (2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, & 2017)- 10 Sectional Titles (all 13 seasons) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

On today's show, I welcome back Martins Ferry Times Leader Sports Editor Seth Staskey to talk about the 2004 Bellaire Big Reds. Seth covered every game of the magical run, which Gene Ammirante's team took the All-American town on. The season ended in heart-breaking fashion, much like its 1995 Division IV State Football Final, but not before the Big Reds gave its town something to remember. Bellaire finished the year (22-5) and made the school's first and only state tournament. Aaron Agnew would graduate and move on to Iowa State. Sophomore Nate Davis, who eventually was drafted in the 5th Round by the San Francisco 49ers, is currently 9th all-time on Ohio's scoring list and 7th in rebounds. He had Ball State (FB) in the Top 10, at one point, before losing to Buffalo. The team featured three players which scored 1,000 or more points (Agnew, Davis, and Mike Fisher). The Big Reds regular season losses included Upper St. Clair (featured Dallas Cowboy's Sean Lee), Logan Elm (featured Tyler Evans who hit the game-winner to allow Findlay to win the D2 National Title in 2009), Akron SVSM, and Wheeling Park. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Today, we have a conversation with former Lima Central Catholic head coach Bob Seggerson. Coach Seggerson was inducted into the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame just one year removed from the bench. In today's episode we discuss: The early years at LCC. 27 years without a home court? 32 years as head coach with 500-plus wins. How do you respond to losing 5 state tournament games by a total of 8 points? Coaching Mr. Basketball (1994) Aaron Hutchins. Nearly meeting up with LeBron James. Coach Seggerson's final game couldn't have been written better in Hollywood. The declining state tournament attendance. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
In today's episode, we talk with Lakewood St. Edward head coach Eric Flannery. We discuss his career from working in a factory while being an assistant coach and attending college to winning state championships and three Gold Medals. It's been a storybook career to this point, and one that started with becoming head coach at just 23-years-old. Flannery has led the Eagles to two state titles including his first in just his second year on the job. Oh, by the way, the Eagles beat their bitter rival to do it. Some other topics we discuss: St. Edward having five coaches in five years before Flannery took over. The 1997-1998 season (1st state championship). Handling a culture where expectations are so high. Cutting his own nephew three times. Losing in the 1999 sectional and questioning whether he wanted to continue coaching, which was the only time a Flannery coached team didn't advance to district play. Almost taking the job at Rocky River. The impact of Don Showalter on his career. Discovering and starting LeBron James' USA basketball career. The 2001-2002 season. The 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 seasons The 2013-2014 season, which ended in St. Ed's second state championship. Coaching his two sons. Finally, what we were all anticipating, Flannery gives his viewpoint on why our high school game needs a shot clock. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
