Hugon was born in Galway. His mother was Irish and his father Polish. He went to school in the Jesuits' St Ignatius College Galway, finishing up in Blackrock College for the final five years. Back then to Galway and UCG where he completed a BA in French and German followed by the H Dip. In UCG he captained the highly successful under 19 team which won the Connaught league and cup that year. The next five very enjoyable years were spent teaching and coaching in Clongowes. He then moved to Blackrock College where he taught for 39 years (coming to a total of 44 years teaching, 4 more than necessary for a full pension). When asked why he did the extra four years he said: "I'm not a Maths teacher, I lost count" He played Junior rugby with Wanderers in Dublin and when injury brought that to a end he took up windsurfing, sailing (with Glenans Sailing Club) followed by hillwalking and mountaineering. Having climbed the Matterhorn, Eiger and Mont Blanc (twice!) he founded a hillwalking club called "Glenwalk" which in its heyday had over 800 members. Hugon retired 4 years ago and currently lives in Monkstown with his wife Catherine. He spends his time cycling, hillwalking, teaching IT skills with "Age Action" to elderly learners and he also volunteers with the "Bike Hub" which is a social enterprise in Dún Laoghaire where he helps out repairing and delivering bikes to those unable to afford them. The rest of the time he spends going to CWC reunions and listening to Rossa's excellent podcasts!!

Shannon Chamber Attributes Commercial Success Of Region To Brendan O'Regan Ahead Of Statue Unveiling

Clare FM - Podcasts

The CEO of Shannon Chamber has attributed the commercial success of the region to Brendan O'Regan ahead of the unveiling of a statue in his honour this afternoon. The life-size statue, which was sculpted by Kilbaha's Seamus Connolly, will be revealed at a public ceremony in the legendary innovator's home village of Sixmilebridge shortly. Born in 1917 between Sixmilebridge and Cratloe, Brendan O'Regan became one of the leading figures of the "golden age" of Irish commercial and industrial development. After attending Blackrock College in Dublin, he studied hotel management in Germany, France, Switzerland and the UK. Brendan first became involved in aviation when he was appointed as catering comptroller at Foynes flying boat base in Limerick, which was a refueling point for transatlantic seaplanes between Britain and the US. Two years later, he acquired the same position at Shannon Airport and it was during his tenure that he invented the concept of the airport duty-free shop. He would follow this with the establishment of the Shannon College of Hotel Management and the Shannon Free Zone which would lead to the birth of Shannon town. Helen Downes, CEO of Shannon Chamber, says she did not have to think twice when approached by Sixmilebridge Historical Society about erecting a statue to celebrate the businessman's legacy. Brendan has been widely-acknowledged for his contributions at a local and national level, having been named Clare Person of the Year in 1984, receiving the Freedom of the City of Limerick in 1995 and being voted Clare's Greatest Ever Person in 2018. Brendan's daughter, Margaret O'Regan, believes that aside from his business achievements, her father's primary legacy is that of someone who was "loving and caring". The unveiling of the statue will take place in the Square of Sixmilebridge this afternoon at 2pm. Its sculptor, Seamus Connolly, says he was honoured to have had the opportunity to work on a piece of such local importance.

Warning: This episode features discussion of child sexual abuse. Since an RTÉ radio documentary about child sexual abuse at Blackrock College aired last month, charity One In Four has been inundated with calls from survivors of abuse, seeking therapy and help in finding justice, often after decades of suffering in silence. But the research shows that child sexual abuse is far from just a legacy issue in Ireland. And while more attention is paid to clerical abuse, most abuse today takes place within families. A growing percentage of offences are related to online activities, in what One In Four CEO Maeve Lewis calls an "epidemic" of online child abuse that sometimes leads on to contact abuse. Today we talk to Maeve about the shocking problem of child sexual abuse in Ireland, what can be done to prevent it, and how we are falling short. This week on the sports round up we catch up on the quietest sporting weekend of the year so far. Two county finals at U15 Boys and U18 Girls took place with Carrick Town continuing their fine league form as Sligo Rugby had their hearts broken in injury time at the hands of Blackrock. We kick off the show with Jason Kavanagh, manager of Carrick Town FC, and some of his squad, Patrick Witton and Callum O'Hagan. They share about how their season has been going and the good run of form after third third consecutive clean sheet victory in the Sligo Leitrim League. Glencar / Manor topped off an amazing year for the club with the U15 Boy's championship final victory over a resolute Gortletteragh side, Breifne speaks to their manager Dominic Kelly about the final and their season, where the prioritisation of the championship say them lift the title after some patchy league performances earlier in the season. Keeldra Gaels' Coach Lizzie Ward recaps the U18 ladies 13-a-side final where in a repeat of the finalists in the Junior Championship, Keeldra Gaels emerged victorious after a solid performance from Drumkeerin Ladies. A 6-8 to 3-5 victory enough to bring the title home to the Gortletteragh and Cloone based outfit. Finally Matthew Earley relives the disappointment of conceding a last gasp try and touchline conversion to lose by a single point, 27-26, to rugby kingpins Blackrock College in their AIL Rugby League Division 2B clash at Hamilton Park, Strandhill on Saturday afternoon.

It's schools  Rugby season and this week I talk to Francis Fullen of CI Structures about the  innovative sports hall he  constructed for Blackrock College.  The interview takes us behind the scenes of the deal to places as far afield as Bahrain as we hear tales of Dinosaurs and triple Birthday cakes.  It gets a little technical for a few minutes half way through but stay tuned... it's worth it. Thanks for listening.
