This week one of my favorite comedians, Anjelah Johnson-Reyes, shares how she followed life's breadcrumbs to turn her dreams into reality. First, Anjelah shares how her pursuit of an entertainment career began when she made the Oakland Raiders cheerleading squad. She continued to follow the breadcrumbs, leading her to a spot as an extra on the iconic show FRIENDS. An inspiring turning point came when, despite facing unemployment and financial struggles, she went viral with her now-famous nail salon video. Anjelah shows us how you can dream bigger than your reality and make it happen by following the breadcrumbs. Remember, your calling is always hiding in plain sight. You have the power to make your dreams a reality! This is one of my favorite quotes from this week's episode: “In order to see the breadcrumbs that God has laid out before you, you have to be focused on your path. Not your friend next to you, not the girl to the right, not the girl you follow on Instagram, not that new TikTok account, not any of that.” – Anjelah Johnson Reyes In this episode: How Anjelah's entertainment career started What it was like to work on FRIENDS How one nail salon bit blew up Anjelah's career Transforming your dreams into reality How to take a leap of faith in yourself Navigating life's breadcrumbs to success Anjelah Johnson-Reyes, a California native, launched her career as an Oakland Raiders cheerleader before diving into stand-up comedy. Her "Nail Salon" routine went viral, leading to a stint on MADtv as her famous character, Bon Qui Qui. Anjelah signed a record deal, toured, and released a Christmas EP. She's also excelled in comedy with specials on Comedy Central and Netflix, starred in commercials, and appeared in TV shows and films. Anjelah resides in Los Angeles with her husband, musician Manwell Reyes, and continues her acting and comedy career with sold-out shows. New episodes of The Kim Gravel Show drop every Thursday. It's so fun when we get to have guests back on the show that we love, but it's especially fun when we get to catch up after we haven't talked to them for awhile! This guest joined us in the very first year of our show in the For the Love of Laughter series, and she was fire then, and she's fire now, 5 years later. We're talking about the amazingly talented and hilarious Anjelah Johnson-Reyes, one of our favorite comedians in the whole wide world! You know her from her awesome Nail Salon comedy sketch, which launched her career, or as her character from MadTV, Bon Qui Qui, and from her amazing comedy specials. When Anjelah was with us last time, she shared that she and her husband had chosen to pursue their careers to the fullest and had made the very personal decision to not have kids. But it's funny what can change in five years, and Anjelah is now the proud mom of 3 month old Rosie Harlow Reyes. She shares what led to the decision to have a baby, what she's learned in this season - which she also candidly shares on her YouTube channel via a series of videos called Postpartum Confessions. Whether she's on stage doing comedy, acting on TV and in movies, or hosting podcasts with her husband Manny, Anjelah gives a great perspective on how life can take us where we least expect to go, and how we can laugh about it a little along the way. * * * Thank you to our sponsors! From her professional beginning as a cheerleader for the Oakland Raiders, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of acting, where she became an internet sensation with her viral video “Nail Salon.” From there to her stint on MAD tv, to the creation of her “Bon Qui Qui” character and subsequent Bon Qui Qui albums and tours, to her many stand up specials, comedy tours, and regular film and tv work...her career has been a wild ride! But the story of her soul is an equally fascinating one. In this especially vulnerable conversation, we talk about just how exhausting “deconstructing” faith can really be, finding God and new community in the middle, and the hope of transformation on the other side. Sheila Tubman meets Mouse Ellis, the yo-yo Junior Champion of Tarrytown! Your hosts Alison and Jody read chapters 4-5 of Judy Blume's 1972 children's novel, "Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great." This summer ain't so bad after all – Sheila's making friends, avoiding dogs, and signing up for day camp. But things start to crack when she gets caught in a lie and is forced to take swimming lessons. Will our gal ever be able to gain Mouse's trust? Will she learn to swim without getting her face wet? On the flip side, Alison and Jody unbox some gorgeous Lip Smackers and an OREO RECORD PLAYER (!!!) from a very generous Blume Head. They also take a quiz on all things Sheila, tell stories about deceased chickens, listen to vintage TV commercials, and embark on some primo dramatic readings. Anjelah Johnson didn’t always want to be a comedian. Her dream was to be an actress, and after a short stint as an Oakland Raiders cheerleader, she followed that path to L.A. With a lot of time on her hands, and no leads in sight, she did a lot of praying and a lot of waiting. Persuaded by a friend to take a free joke-telling class they were offering at her church, Anjelah tried her hand at her first comedy bit called “Nail Salon,” and suddenly found herself to be an overnight YouTube sensation. Gigs with MadTV, the advent of another viral character “Bon Qui Qui,” comedy specials on Netflix, and multiple tours around the world have become Anjelah’s “new normal,” but she believes wholeheartedly that faith and being open to what was in front of her led her to where she is today.

Just a few months after starting comedy, Anjelah Johnson had that experience when her joke about a Vietnamese nail salon went viral with the perfect storm of YouTube, email and MySpace. Listen to her story of what it was like being thrown into a headliner's position when she didn't have enough material, rising to the occasion and learning along the way how rough this business can be. Fortunately, Anjelah is still selling out and growing her audience all over the place, just finished a new musical comedy tour with her character Bon Qui Qui and has her 3rd special, "Not Fancy", coming out on Netflix today (Oct 2, 2015).
