Danessa Myricks, founder of Danessa Myricks Beauty, started out her career in nursing before parlaying a chance meeting with a media executive into a job at a hair-and-beauty magazine publisher. When the magazine she worked for abruptly closed, she pivoted again, teaching herself to be a makeup artist. She built up her experience and expertise and, within a few years, was an in-demand artist teaching at trade shows and selling DVDs of her master classes. She then went on to work at Kiss and Benefit, where she led product development and innovation on projects such as Benefit's brow collection. In 2015, she launched her eponymous brand, which made a splash in the beauty world with its imaginative, multiuse products. The brand launched in Sephora in 2021 and has seen huge year-on-year growth, all while creating entirely new formulas and offering programs like the Danessa Myricks Angels, which provides mentorship opportunities to up-and-coming artists.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Hello lovely yayborhood, hope you're having a wonderful week! I think we were originally scheduled for a #yaysofourlives episode after last week's guest (which Ang and I have actually recorded) but as that's probably our sign off for a short break while we wait for Baby Yay-vidson to arrive, it made more sense to pop this week's guest in first particularly as she has CARRIED us through the past few weeks.  I'm talking, of course, about the incredible co-founder of The Memo and founder of The Blow, Phoebe Simmonds, who I have been fangirling for many years and am so excited to share with you. If you've been anywhere near my socials, you'll know how heavily I've leaned on Phoebe and The Memo during our pregnancy and how much they've taken the stress and overwhelm out of preparing for a little one leaving room to fully enjoy and get excited about what's to come. We'll cover, of course, how The Memo has absolutely revolutionised an industry that has traditionally and somewhat inexplicably been pretty functional and daggy, making it beautifully aesthetic, carefully curated and user friendly with lifesaving lists – it feels like the Mecca of the baby world! Which makes sense given that's where Phoebe started off on her incredible pathway to living and breathing brand building which you'll also hear about taking her from Mecca to LVMH around the world to Benefit Cosmetics and then her own two businesses. The second part is then a Q&A based on yours (and my) questions about some of the biggest decisions when preparing for a new baby – Phoebe gives SUCH valuable advice I was mainly asking questions for myself haha (you might also notice a bit of a sound change – her AirPods died at the perfect interval). We will definitely be needing a follow up part 2 (if not a full series) as we just scratched the surface so stay tuned for that but in the meantime I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did. In Ep. 89 of Earned, Conor sits down with the legendary Danessa Myricks, founder of the inclusive, “boundary-breaking” beauty brand Danessa Myricks Beauty. We jump in by discussing how Danessa became an “accidental makeup artist,” and broke into the beauty industry by creating educational makeup DVDs. We learn how the success of those DVDs led Danessa to consult for other beauty brands, and even become Director of Product Innovation at Benefit Cosmetics. We then hear why she became more passionate about teaching makeup artists around the world at a time when education around beauty was not easily accessible. Danessa shares how her observations around the lack of representation for marginalized communities in the then-homogenous beauty landscape inspired her to “be the change she wanted to see,” and led her to create her inclusive, eponymous beauty brand. We then discuss how Danessa built her community of over one million fans, and she explains how she cultivates connection through adding value wherever possible. Danessa shares why there is “so much power in our conversations about beauty” in bringing people together around the world. Finally, we discuss Danessa's ambitions for the future of the brand, and close the show by learning how “showing up consistently” and recognizing organic brand fans has skyrocketed the brand's success on social. In this episode, you will learn:Why Danessa started her brand to help serve marginalized communitiesHow Danessa cultivated her large, yet close-knit community by adding value without costWhy Danessa believes beauty can bring the world togetherResources:Danessa Myricks BeautyConnect with the Guest(s):Danessa Myricks LinkedInConnect with Conor Begley & CreatorIQ:Conor's LinkedIn - @conormbegleyCreatorIQ LinkedIn - @creatoriqFollow us on social:CreatorIQ YouTube - @TribeDynamicsCreatorIQ Instagram - @creatoriqCreatorIQ TikTok - @creator.iqCreatorIQ Twitter - @CreatorIQ

Today's episode is another in my series with local moms and friends. I met Tori at Spenga, first as a rock star member and now she works there as an instructor. Tori recently became a new mom (her daughter, Emma is 4 months old) and she opened up about her postpartum journey. We laughed some about how her experience as a dog mom semi-prepared her and her husband (a lot of poop is involved with dogs and babies!), and how that helped them get a glimpse into how each other might parent and compromise. Tori's pregnancy and birth experiences were pretty "text-book". She credits that to the healthy choices she made while pregnant and really looked forward to a maternity leave that she expected to be more like a vacation. But soon after Emma was born, Tori was given a HUGE dose of reality and her new expectations were to just get through the day. She noticed something was wrong right away, as she was sad and crying "all of the time". Already feeling guilty, anxious and some regret, her postpartum guilt increased the more she couldn't make sense of the fact that despite an easy pregnancy and birth, she was still not happy. Most of us assume that new parents are immediately happy when they have a baby - social media plays a big part in this. Often, if we are having any negative thoughts about our baby, we are hesitant to reach out to others for fear of judgement. And without a formal diagnosis we don't think our feelings are big enough and that all we need to do is push through the emotions and it will get better. For Tori, she wished she had reached out sooner or thought about the role her family history may have played in her postpartum journey. She did eventually start reaching out, and talks about how it got easier and easier each time. Don't be afraid to talk about your feelings right away. Postpartum depression help, whether it's talk therapy or medication, doesn't have to be a "forever" thing but an important stepping stone to getting the help you need. A beauty veteran with over 10 years of experience, Eleanor is one tenacious woman that had her heart set on magazines from very early on. At the time she was only 21! Fast forward, Eleanor continues to manage an ever-expanding digital team and is an inspiration to many beauty aficionados. In this episode Danielle Gay (beauty director & executive editor) and Rose Garnett (beauty editor) speak about Eleanor's foray into what she calls accidental entrepreneurship, how she scaled her business thoughtfully and the greatest piece of business advice she's ever received. Molly Dickson is a fashion photographer, collage motion artist, and director reimagining 2D art from a multimedia approach. Her work spans commercial work for clients such as Benefit Cosmetics, Bergdorf Goodman, Bumble, and The Yes, alongside personal projects like her latest NFT collection, Computer Cowgirls, of which Molly is donating all proceeds to Fund Texas Choice, a non-profit organization that pays for Texans' travel to abortion clinics. I originally found Molly's work on Instagram circa Spring 2017 and instantly admired how she married the nostalgic feeling of collages with modern tech that makes each of her pieces feel entirely new. On Today's Podcast This week I sit down with Amber Champagne-Matos. Amber Champagne-Matos, the owner and founder of multiple beauty businesses, believes in doing what you love; not what you once loved. Amber is a licensed esthetician, skincare entrepreneur, and former Senior National Educator for Benefit Cosmetics! During her career with Benefit, she traveled the country extensively and trained thousands of other estheticians. She also wrote groundbreaking educational content for the company, both nationally and internationally, contributing to Benefit's remarkable corporate growth. To put that in perspective, Benefit employs more than 6,000 estheticians in 59 countries across five continents and is part of the world-renowned luxury brand, Louis Vuitton. Her experience with this major cosmetics brand gave her the edge and knowledge she needed to confidently face the world of beauty and dare to dream. In the last year alone, Amber has established three interconnecting businesses, created a regularly visited beauty blog and shop, began to develop an up-and-coming skincare line, and became a Best Selling Author. This year, she is working on a second book, getting ready to launch her skincare line, expanding into other territories, and helping other Estheticians build their dream businesses. Amber has lived on both coasts, but she is a true "East Coast" girl at heart. She is fascinated by the Enneagram (she's a 4w5 with strong 3 tendencies) and once did makeup during New York's famous fashion week.   How to Connect with Amber An Esthetician's Guide to the Midlife Skin Crisis © at www.champagneapothecary.com The Esthetician's Quick Guide to Starting your Business at www.theestheticiansguidetobusoness.com amber@champagneapothecary.com   www.Instagram.com/champagneapothecary www.Facebook.com/theestheticiansguidetobusiness
