Bob Ford likes to say if he has 10 good stories to tell sitting around a bar, Charles Barkley is the subject of 7 or 8 of them. Hear a few of his greatest hits from covering Sir Charles, each told with Bob's wit and dead-on voice imitation. He also shares other memorable moments from his long, distinguished career in Philadelphia that took him around the world and made his columns must-reads. Only Bob could bring us Pete Rose, Doug Moe, Prince Albert, a Finish sports talk radio debate over ski jumping, and wolf urine – yes, wolf urine – all in one episode. You'll understand why other sportswriters always enjoyed Bob's company. He's a real treasure. Ford was an award-winning writer at the Philadelphia Inquirer for nearly 33 years – the final 18 as a columnist – until his retirement in 2020. He was twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in commentary. Bob was a general assignment feature writer, with an emphasis on Olympic sports and long-form narrative from 1994 until his promotion as columnist in 2003. He previously covered the NBA and 76ers as the paper's beat reporter for six years. Bob was named Pennsylvania Sportswriter of the Year seven times by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. He covered six Olympics, three World Cups, numerous NBA Finals, the Tour de France, Wimbledon, the British Open and other major sporting events. He wrote stories from 14 countries and throughout the U.S. His work was also recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists, the Associated Press, and the Keystone Press Association. He was twice named a top 10 columnist in the large circulation division of the AP Sports Editors competition, and he also won the 2005 Eclipse Award for outstanding feature writing on thoroughbred racing. Prior to joining the Inquirer in 1987, Bob worked six years at the Delaware County Daily Times outside of Philadelphia, where he covered the Phillies as a beat reporter for three seasons and later served as columnist. Bob began his journalism career as sports editor of the Easton (Md.) Star-Democrat (1976 to '81) following his graduation from the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. His alma mater's Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism honored Bob in 2017 with a “Distinguished Terrapin” award. Ford is a fellow of the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism. Bob is a native of College Park, Md. His wife, Bonnie Ford, was an award-winning sports journalist at ESPN, the Chicago Tribune, The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, the Detroit News, and the Ann Arbor News. Heather was joined by her mom, Bonnie Ford, to discuss how life's challenges can be turned around.
For Bonnie Ford, being a sportswriter is about more than covering games and knowing statistics. She carved out a stellar career by acting on what she felt was a journalistic obligation: Digging into complicated social, cultural and financial topics related to sports. Bonnie did extensive work on doping scandals, especially in cycling, which made her an expert on the Tour de France and its superstar, Lance Armstrong. “I'm grateful that I had such a compelling figure for so much of my career to cover,” she says. Bonnie also discusses how she wrote about issues common to all athletes such as mental health. She shares how Olympic swimmer Allison Schmitt used her platform to talk about depression. She also tells us about covering the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013, about profiling Art Modell as he moved the Browns from Cleveland, and what it was like at Wrigley Field after Steve Bartman tried to catch a foul ball. Bonnie was a Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford and a Fellow at the University of Maryland Knight Center for Specialized Journalism. She grew up in the New York City area, spent her high school years in Paris, France before earning a bachelor's degree in 1979 from Oberlin College in Ohio. Bonnie is married to former Philadelphia Inquirer sports columnist Bob Ford, who retired in 2020 after 32 years at that paper. Stories from early in her career were written under her maiden name, Bonnie DeSimone. Follow her on Twitter: @Bonnie_D_Ford Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The 2020 Masters Tournament tees off Thursday from Augusta, and it’s going to look, sound and feel very different from its traditional April home. Gone are the pastel azaleas and the roar of the patrons; in are fall foliage and sounds of silence from Amen Corner. But it’s still The Masters, and someone will be getting a green jacket. Will Tiger Woods repeat his 2019 victory? Or will current favorite Bryson DeChambeau win his second straight major? We check in with Scott Van Pelt as he prepares to make the journey to Augusta, and ask him what he’s watching for in this year’s tournament. Then, ESPN’s Bonnie Ford brings us her reporting on the Vendée Globe, one of sailing’s most grueling races, and is considered the ultimate socially distanced sporting event.
© artwork by Bonnie Ford ➲ contact ✉ @bonnieford-1 Robin Schellenberg presents Afterhour Sounds Podcast Nr. 202 Describing the sound, sonics and aesthetic of Robin Schellenberg’s music, one could tend easily to use bold headlines as „Melodic Techno“ or „Deep House“ with a love for „Downtempo“ – but there is more to it: in between the kicks, the free forming patterns and tracks, it becomes alive and spans vividly over these genres. His productions oscillate between a soft dystopian void full of sweeping build up’s, that drift endlessly into an infinite sky, twisting from a warm unisono into harsher electronics, to break down into perfectly saturated beats, that house themselves in the mid-tempo field, referencing minimal grooves from contemporary downbeat productions. Even if we are not talking about dark techno here, Robin loves its aesthetic and manages to translate them into his music, without drifting into cold industrial repetition – it’s more a deep yearning for the horizon, pulling the dancer forward with soft melancholy. In his DJ-Set’s he brings all these parts together, roaming from 116 – 128 bpm, blending organic downbeat with heavy sweeping bangers, to slowly lead his dancefloor into a sweet and endless decay. Chapeu. Wir sind entzückt. Listen in as ESPN Olympics reporter Bonnie Ford talks with Pete McMurray about ESPN’s 30 for 30 podcast series on US Gymnastics and the toxic culture these young women had to overcome to get to the Olympics.
ESPN senior writer Alyssa Roenigk joined the show to discuss Heavy Medals: Inside the Karolyi Gymnastic Empire, a 30 for 30 podcast she's co-hosting with Bonnie Ford that takes a sweeping look at the influence of the legendary Romanian coaching team, Bela and Marta Karolyi, and in turn the transformation of USA Gymnastics over the last four decades.
ESPN's Bonnie Ford joins the show to discuss her career in sports journalism. She shares how she got started, the best advice she received, and gets into her work along the way. One of Bonnie's areas of expertise is doping in sports, and she shares valuable thoughts on the persistent fight to curb it. She talks about how she has covered fourteen iterations of the Tour de France, getting into the logistical web of the event, plus what it was like to report on the Lance Armstrong story. Finally, she speaks about one of the most difficult, yet rewarding, stories she's worked on involving a biathlete named Kari Swenson. All this and much more. Enjoy!

The Saga Of The Golden Scarab". Bonnie Ford is a senior writer for ESPN.com who has over two decades of experience covering sports and anti-doping. She shares challenges associated with making anti-doping stories interesting and accessible for general audiences as well as the pressures and stresses of sports journalism. Bonnie also discusses guidelines for responsible journalism when covering sensitive anti-doping cases, potential pros and cons of making doping cases public, and the evolution of her anti-doping reporting over the years.
With this week's episode, we switch gears from interviewing athletes to interviewing a journalist. Kara, Chris and Shanna are joined by Bonnie Ford to discuss doping and the pursuit of clean sport. Bonnie is a senior writer with ESPN who covers cycling, Olympics sports, tennis, soccer, and a host of other sports. She has covered more than 14 Tours de France including the Lance Armstrong and Chris Froome doping cases. In addition, she has interviewed anti-doping whistleblowers, including Floyd Landis, Yuliya and Vitaly Stepanova, and Kara herself. With Bonnie, we cover a range of topics including her first exposure to doping in sport, what it was like to cover cycling during the Armstrong era, what she believes athletes can do to stand up on this topic, and how fans can remain hopeful in the fight against doping. Bonnie's perspective on this topic is objective, deep, and insightful. We need more journalists like her who are willing to ask the hard questions while covering this topic thoroughly and with regularity.
Nairo Quintana won the stage, but did Movistar even want him to? And Egan Bernal got a gap, only to have his teammate try to bridge across. It was a day for odd tactics, and Rupert and Caley are joined by ESPN.com's Bonnie Ford and the Wall Street Journal's Josh Robinson to talk through a spectacular day of racing. Plus, James Huang calls in for a Nerd Alert segment on climbing bikes.
Julian Alaphilippe takes an impressive stage 13 time trial win to extend his Tour de France lead. Marianne Vos storms to victory at La Course. Caley, Rupert, and Iain talk with Bonnie Ford and Joshua Robinson about a compelling day in France.
Sometimes we choose to do things that push us out of our comfort zones. Sometimes those things happen to us and we have to dig in, embrace the discomfort and use all of our tools to push through. Kikkan Randall has experienced both categories. Kikkan is a lifelong skier. Her family moved to Alaska when she was young so most of her formative years were spent there. She’s a talent. Pure and simple. A natural athlete who gravitated to skiing. She has competed in 5 Olympic games. FIVE! While she raced at the top level in the world for over 15 years, it wasn’t until 2018 when she and her teammate Jessie Diggins won gold in the Team Sprint – the first ever gold medals in that event! Kikkan’s athletic career alone is something we can all glean knowledge and inspiration from. But the next chapter of her life started three months after her gold medal. She was officially retired when she felt a lump on her breast and was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer at 35 years old. This is the chapter she’s still writing. Through it all, she has used exercise as a tool to help during treatments and guess what? Just for kicks, she jumped into her first endurance race – the 50km Birkie! Like me (racing the 29km Korte), she was also stepping outside of her comfort zone and doing a long distance race for the first time. Today we talk about: Alaska: Growing up in eccentric Alaskan culture as a runner and a skier What it took to become a pro/elite skier The 10 year plan Competing at the top level in the world for over 15 years How she met her husband Jeff Ellis & their evolution as a married couple pursuing athletic dreams - separately and together Becoming a mom (to now 3 year old Breck) THE RACE! What it took to win GOLD in PyeongChang 2018 Why teamwork is the key to success Cancer: how, why & what now Jumping into the Birkie & exercising through her treatments What we didn't talk about: Her non-profit Fast & Female - Kikkan is empowering girls everyday! Kikkan is a very special person. Since this interview, ESPNW wrote an article about Kikkan and described what they call “the Kikkan Effect.” Here’s how the author Bonnie Ford describes it, “a powerful vortex evident long before her diagnosis. It pulls people toward her and spins them back out, doing things they might otherwise resist. They hear her in their heads: Come on. It'll be fun. We'll be better.” I think Kikkan is just one of those people who on the outside is like the girl next door, so she’s real and approachable, but on the inside is like a superhero, able to push herself mentally and physically further than most people can ever imagine. But the effect is real. Her Positivity is contagious. Post-Note: Back to the Birkie for a minute. It’s funny. We texted before and after the start. I told her there was a bet to see who would win – me in the 29k or Kikkan in the 50k. At 2:48, she texted me this sentence, “That was hard.” I wrote back, “I can’t wait to hear about it. But the most awesome thing is that I beat you.” Of course she averaged 3:22 per k for 50k and I averaged 5:13 per k for 29k but a bet’s a bet. So the Kikkan effect has begun!
