Deze week is de gast Gerard van Olphen, die onder andere voormalig CEO van APG is en op het moment meerdere non-executive rollen vervult, waaronder als voorzitter van de Raad van Commissarissen bij de Volksbank en als vicevoorzitter van de Raad van Commissarissen bij a.s.r. Gerard is een ervaren bestuurder in de Nederlandse financiële sector met meer 39 jaar ervaring in diverse leidinggevende functies bij grote financiële instellingen. Hij begon zijn carrière bij ABN AMRO, waarna hij doorgroeide bij SNS REAAL in verschillende bestuurlijke rollen. Vervolgens bekleedde hij de functies van CFO en CEO Asset Management bij NIBC. In 2002 maakte Gerard de overstap naar Achmea, waar hij op een gegeven moment vicevoorzitter van de Raad van Bestuur werd. Na zijn tijd bij Achmea is Gerard in 2013 door de overheid gevraagd om als CEO SNS REAAL te gaan leiden. Vervolgens was hij kort CEO bij VIVAT, waarna hij vijf jaar lang de CEO, zoals gezegd, van APG was. Momenteel is Gerard voorzitter van de RvC van de Volksbank en commissaris bij a.s.r. Daarnaast vervult hij een aantal andere nevenfuncties, waaronder ook bij de Koninklijke NBA. Tot slot, Gerard studeerde economie en accountancy aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen en volgde later managementopleidingen bij onder andere INSEAD en IMD. Vandaag bespreken we het boek The cutting edge van Bjørn Aris. Ondertitel The martial art of doing business. Aris begon zijn carrière bij ABN AMRO en daarna als investment bankier bij Lloyds Banking Group en NIBC. Na een reis door het verre Oosten startte hij een internetbedrijf, welke hij enkele jaren later verkocht. Zijn reis inspireerde hem om Oosterse wijsheden verder te onderzoeken als een manier van leven en wat mensen succesvol in werk maakt. Sinds 2000 werkt hij als spreker, trainer en consultant voor het bedrijfsleven. In zijn lezingen en trainingen combineert Aris zijn ervaring als investment banker en ondernemer met zijn kennis in oosterse filosofieën. Volgens Aris is innerlijke balans tussen lichaam en geest en tussen ratio (linkerhersenhelft) en intuïtie (rechterhersenhelft) de sleutel tot succes. Hiervoor is een ontspannen toestand vereist. Bjørn Aris ontwikkelde op basis van zijn bevindingen in 2004 een methode die mensen helpt effectiever te leren en gedragsverandering toe te passen. Hij koppelt hierbij theorie aan beweging, waardoor de ratio wordt omzeild en nieuwe cognitieve verbindingen worden aangemaakt. De oorspronkelijke titel was De zon komt op in het Oosten (2011), dit werd The cutting edge in 2012. Wij lazen de vierde druk uit 2019. Zijn tweede boek De lessen van een Samoerai dat we eerder hebben besproken uit 2020. Voor mij is er een duidelijk verschil in zijn eerste en tweede boek. In dit boek staan veel algemeenheden zonder verwijzingen waar Bjorn dit vandaan heeft. Meest interessante is het laatste hoofdstuk met suggesties wat we in het Westen kunnen gebruiken uit de Japanse wereld in het bedrijf en als mens. Japanse lessen in de praktijk Nawoord Inleiding Japanse oplossingen voor westerse problemen aan de hand van de Japanse Weg van het zwaard. Het probleem Westers denken leunt op ratio. Door scheiding lichaam en geest (Grieken) en de mens centraal te stellen zijn we de verbinding met anderen en de natuur kwijt geraakt. De hang naar materie is ons aangeleerd en kunnen we dus ook eer loslaten. Belemmerende factoren: conditionering, ego en angst. De geldwereld heeft de verbinding met de reële economie verloren. p15 allemaal problemen in het westerse bedrijfsleven. Inleiding naar volgende hoofdstuk Wat westerse bedrijven van Japan kunnen leren Hier wordt vooral de Toyota Way en het kaizen-principe besproken.  Bijzonder op p27 worden de resultaten genoemd van Toyota - in 2010 - terwijl jaar daarvoor verlies wordt gedraaid en er een terugroepactie is. In het vorige hoofdstuk praat hij over angst als belemmerende factor. In dit hoofdstuk op p29 heeft hij het over de angst voor uitsluiting in Japan en zelfdoding van de Japanse directeur. Klinkt niet als een goed voorbeeld. Bjorn kiest daarom waarschijnlijk voor cherry-picking. Uitleg over Bunsha - Japanse managementmethode. - Zie ook boek Start Up Factory over Haier. De meest natuurlijke manier om te groeien, is door te delen (celdeling). Gecontroleerde groei. Intrinsieke motivatie: verlangen naar vrijheid. Vertrouwen, erkenning en respect zijn belangrijkste waarden voor werknemer. Belangrijkste te doen is goed voor de klant zorgen. Focus op het proces in het hier en nu en niet op het resultaat. In Japan ben je geen ik, maar wordt je ik gevormd door de relaties die je hebt. Management is beheersen van processen en werknemers, leiderschap is juist loslaten daarvan. Japanse kennis - het Japanse zwaard, de bron p56 weer de mooie uitspraken in Japan tussen je 70e ne 80e piek je. Als je inzicht in het leven verkrijgt 10 minuten voor je sterft ben je op tijd. Tot die tijd,... gewoon doortrainen. De vorm is het begin, dan volgt de ontwikkeling en tenslotte volgt loslaten. Bijzonder hoofdstuk.

Nach der Übernahme des NIBC-Schifffahrtsportfolios und der Expansion in die Niederlande ist das Kreditvolumen der Hamburg Commercial Bank wieder auf etwas über 3 Mrd. € geklettert. Weitere Übernahmen schließt Jan-Philipp Rohr, Global Head of Shipping, zwar aus. Dennoch peilt er in den kommenden Jahren trotz eines zunehmenden Wettbewerbes unter den Schiffsfinanzierern die ursprünglich für den Shipping-Bereich verkündete Zielgröße von 4-5 Mrd. € an. „Bei uns ist ausreichend Kapital vorhanden, um weiteres Geschäft zu machen“, sagt er. In diesem Jahr soll das Neugeschäft ein Volumen von 1,5 Mrd. $ erreichen, das liegt auf dem Niveau früherer guter Jahre. Dass die vielen Neubau-Bestellungen, vor allem bei Containerschiffen, den Markt überhitzen könnten, fürchtet er derzeit nicht. Die HCOB sei in erster Linie bei 10 bis 15 Jahre alter Secondhand-Tonnage und in den eher kleineren Segmenten bei Containerschiffen, Bulkern und Tankern aktiv. Bei Neubauten bleibt die Bank ohnehin weiter zurückhaltend, „wir sind da noch etwas scheu mit Blick auf das technologische Risiko und wollen nicht auf das falsche Pferd setzen“, so Rohr. Das können sich in einigen Jahren ändern. „Die Schiffe, die im Jahr 2050 im Wasser schwimmen, sind nicht die Schiffe, die wir heute in Büchern haben.“

Dennis Dijkstra was tot 31 januari 2023 CEO bij Flow Traders en hij is er nu advisor. Hij begon bij Flow Traders in 2009 als CFO en was later 8 jaar de CEO. Vóór Flow Traders was hij onder andere CFO en Managing Partner bij Faxtor Securities, VP Structured Finance bij NIBC, en mede-oprichter en CFO van Sparck. Hij begon zijn carrière bij Arthur Andersen.   Dennis studeerde Bedrijfseconomie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam.   Tot slot, Dennis is 51 jaar, hij is getrouwd en heeft drie kinderen.  Dan nog een paar kerngetallen over Flow Traders op basis van het jaarverslag 2022: - er werd voor bijna 7 trillion aan onderliggende waarde verhandeld door het platform van Flow Traders; - er was sprake van 150 miljoen netto winst; - er werd voor bijna 87 miljoen aan winstdeling  uitgekeerd aan de medewerkers; - de medewerkers en het bedrijf samen doneerden circa 1 miljoen euro aan goede doelen; - er werken bijna 700 mensen op meer dan 10 locaties wereldwijd. Our focus today is the man who runs up to Jesus and falls on his knees in front of him. However, it must be noted that this incident comes hard on the heels of the previous scene. Children were brought to Jesus - only for the disciples to rebuke them. Jesus in turn rebukes his disciples and declares that “the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” (v14). Mark is showing us the ideal kingdom-candidates before we encounter the flawed kingdom aspirant. ‘Paradoxically, the least powerful, least wealthy, least influential have a greater prospect of entering the kingdom than do those who are most powerful, wealthy, and influential.' Word Biblical Commentary receive the kingdom Why are the children able to ‘receive the kingdom' (v15)? We are not told precisely here, but perhaps we get a clue by looking at the contrasting example of the man on his knees. He looked good. He sounded good. He ran to Jesus, he fell upon his knees, he addressed Jesus respectfully (‘good teacher'), he kept the law. Yet something was amiss. He knew it. Why approach Jesus otherwise?  The answer was not what he expected nor wanted. He may have started on his knees, but he ended by turning his back on Jesus. He may have begun by running to Jesus, but he ultimately walks away. He may have arrived with eagerness, but he departed with sadness. no one is good Why does Jesus correct the man? Surely Jesus is ‘good'? Perhaps Jesus is detecting flattery and deflecting it.  ‘The word order places the emphasis on the με, “me”: “Why me do you call ‘good'?”' WBC. Only God is worthy of primary focus, not even Jesus. He has come to reveal God to humankind, not himself. Will this man honour not so much Jesus, but God who is source of all goodness including his good commands? One thing you lack This man has no material needs and no law-needs.  He knows he has other needs, but what are those needs?  Jesus is about to tell him - and it is clearly not what the man expected.  ‘looked' - looking at him. Did Jesus pause to study the man? Was the silent pause an opportunity for him to think, or perhaps a moment for the man to think about what he had just said? Was Jesus giving him space to add something more? the poor Jesus told him to give his money to the poor because once it is given you can't get it back! This command is clearly not for everyone. The extravagance of the woman in Mark 14:5 is a counter-example. Jesus gives each person the challenge they need. come follow me Jesus seems to be saying, “Help me with my mission.”  See Mark 2:14; 8:34; John 1:43; 12:26; 21:19, 21:22. Perhaps the question Jesus is posing to the man is, “Is my mission more important than yours?” “In Jesus' second response to the man, the commandments are assumed and taken for granted. The second response, however, moves beyond command to an abandonment and trust that involve the losing of self in yielding, trustful communion....The move is from willing duty to utter delight.” Walter Brueggemann, Psalms, 196 great wealth “He is told to part with the goods of this age since he is so interested in the next one, but he will not do so. His interest in the next world is not sincere enough to enable him to give up his preocupation with this world.” NIBC, Hurtado, Mark, 164 He wants wealth in both realms, but that is not possible as a demand or precondition of following Jesus. This gives the lie to the prosperity gospel advocates. Jesus' instruction indicates the urgency of the call. This is not simply a call to follow a Rabbi, but a call uttered due to the arrival of the kingdom and its king. first..last The rich man looked like he belonged to those who are “first”, but he will be last. The disciples looked more like they belonged to the “last”, but they would be the first. The rich man calculates and finds the price not worth paying. Fundamentally he does not trust Jesus in the way children trust him. He hedges, attempting to find a way into the kingdom acceptable to God and to himself. That hedging keeps him on the wrong side of the hedge. This scenario makes the disciples wonder if they have the right approach, attitude and understanding. Jesus is challenging and reassuring. They cannot ‘achieve' eternal life, but God can and will make the difference. The costs are high - everything! But the rewards are far beyond anything we could hope for otherwise. For Reflection 1. Bas Marteijn is de Chief Country Officer Netherlands van Deutsche Bank.  Marteijn startte zijn loopbaan in 1998 bij NIBC om na een aantal jaar over te stappen naar Deutsche Bank. Vervolgens werkte hij voor ABN AMRO en kwam in 2011 terug bij Deutsche Bank. Hij vervulde bij de verschillende banken een diversiteit aan functies, zoals bij Deutsche in de rollen van Global Head Cash Management en Head Commercial Banking Netherlands, bij ABN AMRO was hij onder andere Managing Director Sector Coverage en bij NIBC werkte hij als econoom. Naast zijn fulltime positie is hij onder andere bestuurslid van de Foreign Banker's Association en bestuurslid van de German-Dutch Chamber of Commerce (DNHK). Carlo van der Weg is CEO en mede-oprichter van Credion. Carlo groeide op in Leeuwarden en studeerde Small Business and Retail Management aan de Hogeschool Leeuwarden. Hij startte zijn carrière als trainee voor een gecombineerd programma tussen de Friesland bank en Van Lanschot. Okay so this is number 10!Back when I used go out for the first couple of times most parties would play EDM and dirty house mostly. I thought that that was what #House was and it really just wasn’t something for me so I decided to pretty much ban all those parties. I liked Daft Punk (does that count?) but that was it pretty much for a long time. Eventually, Disclosure popped on my radar around the same time I already started to slowly open up more towards the genre. Eventually I started discovering and bit by bit through digging and visiting parties and festivals I developed my taste to where it is now which is pretty much the same as my preferred type of sound in all other genres: tough drums, deep basslines, soulful sounds and nice rhythmic accents here and there.Really love how this one rolled out. Despite I still am just finding my way within the genre and it’s scene I managed to capture pretty accurate how I like my house! I’ve never even played a house-only set ever yet so I’d love to do that. With the season well underway, Get Physical is hitting the ground running with the 18th edition of Full Body Workout. If case you’ve been living under a rock the last decade, Full Body Workout aims to shine a spotlight on some of the hottest rising and established talent for their take on where the scene is now, and where it might be headed. So finding tracks by visionaries like Pezzner, NIBC and Nils Hoffman shouldn’t come as a surprise. The compilation opens with a floor-moving tech-house groove from Supernova to set everything into motion. Quickly following is Pezzner with ‘Julie’, a small shift down in energy initially, only to rise to peak time levels over the course of the track. Eagles & Butterflies then shakes down the floor with a percussion driven beauty, ‘Awakening’. Nils Hoffman up next. The young German producer delivers a stunning track full of bass swells and calls it ‘Storms’.
