A few days ago, Tom finally got to speak with Canadian guitar legend Rik Emmett of Triumph. Rik was a bucket list guest for Tom, who could hardly contain himself! There’s a very special reason why Rik was talking to us. On Monday, May 5, 2025 Coalition for Music Education will celebrate Music Monday with a cross-country sing-along to raise awareness for music education. The annual event celebrates the unifying power of music as thousands of Canadians join in singing and performing the Music Monday anthem at their schools and other community events. Hold On the uplifting, inspirational song by classic Canadian hard rock power trio, Triumph has been chosen as the 2025 Music Monday anthem. Rik tells us about the creation of “Hold On” 46 years ago and how it marked a change in his artistic growth as well as the fortunes of the band. He also discusses the importance of music education, a cause that is deeply personal to him. You can see Rik perform in person at a special “Intimate Evening with Rik Emmett” – Friday, March 21 at Black Bellows in Collingwood Ontario. It’s an interactive evening of performances and storytelling, hosted by Brent Jensen of the “No Sleep Til Sudbury” podcast. Rik’s excellent memoir, “Lay It On The Line”, is now available. As the year comes to a close, I wanted to share a fun and personal Christmas music playlist that gets a lot of airtime at the Jensen house around this time every year. Last year's holiday playlist contained more familiar Christmas tunes - this one, less so. But I do hope there's something on it you like. Here's the playlist link on Spotify. Merry Christmas and the happiest of holidays to each and every No Sleep 'til Sudbury listener. It fills me with joy that I can share things like this with you, and I appreciate your support very sincerely. Cheers everyone!
On today's episode of Jazz Northwest, we'll preview some upcoming performances by Bill Anschell, The Roosevelt Jazz Band, Kelly Eisenhour, Brent Jensen and Ben Thomas. Also featured this week, a jazz classic by Warren Rand and Dave Frishberg and two songs by the late Joni Metcalf.
We made it! It's the 100th episode of Famous Lost Words and our Season 7 finale. This week – some of our favourite stories ever! Roland Orzabal of Tears For Fears talks about his first hilarious meeting with our favourite Beatle. Ed Robertson explains how Barenaked Ladies made the cheapest music video in history – which ended up in high rotation at MuchMusic Christopher regals us once again with his epic story about having dinner in L.A. with Robert Plant, Mike Myers, Alannah Myles… and Don Rickles? Jann Arden tells the unusual story of how she got her record deal CHUM broadcaster Roger Ashby talks about partying for 48 hours in London with Led Zeppelin and Fleetwood Mac - and living to tell about it. ‘60s legend Martha Reeves tells the amazing story behind her big break at Motown. Ivan from Men Without Hats talks about the dizzying experience of their first major concert Randy Bachman talks about two different experiences with the same Beatle Chantal Kreviazuk tells the wonderful story of the night she met her future husband, Raine Maida We re-visit Tom's story about the time he embarrassed himself in front of Eddie Van Halen and Valerie Bertinelli (and why he has no regrets) Our friend Brent Jensen (of the podcast No Sleep Til Sudbury) tells the entertaining story of the time he inadvertently interviewed one of his heroes, shirtless! Former Eagle Glenn Frey reacts to harsh criticism from producer Glyn Johns Adam Levine of Maroon 5 tells the story of the time he saved his dad from terrible embarrassment ‘70s star Al Stewart talks about a case of mistaken identity with a famous ‘80s duo And Christopher & Tom have a lively debate about this question: if you could only listen to the music of one decade, which decade would it be?
In this final No Sleep 'til Sudbury episode of 2021, I decided to share some of my favourites from the Christmas playlists heard in the Jensen house throughout the holiday season. You may be surprised at some of these selections, particularly the very first Christmas album that plays every year as the tree goes up on the last Friday evening in November. Some surprises and a few facts behind the songs - like why "Peace On Earth" had to be written on the spot for David Bowie's duet with Bing Crosby, the Christmas song that's actually a protest song, and who was originally supposed the sing the female part of "Fairytale in New York". To all my listeners and friends - the happiest of holidays to each and every one of you, near and far. Merry Christmas! The playlist can be accessed in Spotify here.
On episode 34, Ben Plotnik from the JUNO Award winning string quartet, The Fretless, joins me to talk about their latest, collaborative album “Open House”, released on October 22nd, 2021. "Open House" is a 10 song album and the first project that sees The Fretless feature vocals on all the tracks and in such a prominent role. Working with artists like Celeigh Cardinal, Nuela Charles, The Bros. Landreth, Dan Mangan and more. We talk about the process of interpreting and re-arranging songs from Bruce Cockburn, Steely Dan, Feist, and Alessia Cara - to name a few - for the the fiddle/viola & cello, and what they needed to do in order to clear the songs for publishing on the album.A supergroup of celebrated solo artists, The Fretless has been creating a singular and signature sound that dares to expand the idea of what a string music quartet can be—transforming fiddle tunes and folk melodies into intricate, beautiful, high-energy arrangements that have quickly gained a dedicated following and accolades from around the world. Within what appears to be a simple construct — two fiddles, a viola, and a cello — The Fretless has created a sound that is distinctly rich, multi-layered, and uniquely percussive. This tonal quality is pushing traditional music to new heights, producing a completely fresh approach to Folk music. If you have music you would like us to hear, or have a great release day rollout plan you want the world to know about, send an email with your EPK and release plan to: contactreleaseday@gmail.comThank you so much for listening, and Welcome to Release Day!Theme music composed by Evan Denley.Reference Links:The Fretless website - https://www.thefretless.com/Decolonial Clothing - https://decolonialclothingco.ca/No Sleep Til Sudbury Podcast with Brent Jensen: https://nosleeptilsudbury.libsyn.com/Release Day Spotify Playlist - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0GbiC5YorhQObK1n3FndhJ?si=l0sbbP1ARnaWaDbFRVzpEwRelease Day Website - https://releasedayseries.com/"Release Day," an ongoing series where we sit down with Canadian musicians of all genres to discuss their latest releases from singles to albums, and their strategy behind releasing it to the world.https://releasedayseries.com/https://twitter.com/ReleasedaySrshttps://www.instagram.com/releaseday_series/
Hello and welcome to the release day series podcast, I'm your host Alex Huard, joining me today from the east coast of Canada in Nova Scotia, is singer songwriter Daniel James McFadyen to talk about his debut album August, I'm Yours that he released on October 8th, 2021. In our conversation we really dig into the inspiration behind the songs on the album, learning more about what they mean to Daniel and the circumstances under which many of the songs were written. We also talk about the process of booking his tour from Halifax to Toronto while the pandemic carries on, and what the response has been from venues and his audiences. A couple familiar names pop up as well, names that you might recognize from the wonderful music they write, or from the podcast itself...small world. At the start of 2020, McFadyen had just recorded and released an EP. He had a hit song going viral on YouTube and he was ready to start a summer-long tour across Canada. Then the world shut down, the tour was cancelled, and he needed money. With no shows on the horizon, McFadyen found himself on a plane to Ontario, going to work construction for his brother-in-law to pay off his debts. Between the lost tour and the lost money, he started to question if should return to music at all, or just stick to a safe day job. It was the typical pandemic identity crisis. But it was short-lived. Conceived, written and recorded in a time of worldwide and personal uncertainty, August, I'm Yours is an album about change, letting go, and, ultimately, coming home. Daniel begins our conversation taking us through the events that would play significant role in his music career, leading up to the pandemic. If you have music you would like us to hear, or have a great release day rollout plan you want the world to know about, send an email with your EPK and release plan to: contactreleaseday@gmail.comThank you so much for listening, and Welcome to Release Day!Theme music composed by Evan Denley.Reference Links:Daniel James McFadyen's website - https://danieljamesmcfadyen.com/Decolonial Clothing - https://decolonialclothingco.ca/No Sleep Til Sudbury Podcast with Brent Jensen: https://nosleeptilsudbury.libsyn.com/Release Day Spotify Playlist - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0GbiC5YorhQObK1n3FndhJ?si=l0sbbP1ARnaWaDbFRVzpEwRelease Day Website - https://releasedayseries.com/"Release Day," an ongoing series where we sit down with Canadian musicians of all genres to discuss their latest releases from singles to albums, and their strategy behind releasing it to the world.https://releasedayseries.com/https://twitter.com/ReleasedaySrshttps://www.instagram.com/releaseday_series/
On episode 32, joining all the way from northern Ontario in Attawapiskat First Nation on the James Bay, is Adrian Sutherland. The indigenous singer-songwriter, who might be best known as the frontman of the band Midnight Shine, released his debut solo record, When the Magic Hits on September 17th, 2021.We go into detail about how Adrian adapted to the pandemic to get the album recorded and visual identity of the record put together. This includes; building his studio out of a sea container to record out of, working remotely with award winning producer Colin Linden of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings and JUNO-Nominated producer Tim Vesely of the Rheostatics. Working with his wife as his photographer, and self-producing his own music video consisting of 1600 selfies. We also touch on his songwriting session with Serena Ryder, playing hockey with Jim Cuddy at the JUNO Cup, and how building industry relationships can make all the difference in forging ahead in your musical career. If you have music you would like us to hear, or have a great release day rollout plan you want the world to know about, send an email with your EPK and release plan to: contactreleaseday@gmail.comThank you so much for listening, and Welcome to Release Day!Theme music composed by Evan Denley.Reference Links:Adrian Sutherland's Website https://adriansutherlandmusic.com/Decolonial Clothing - https://decolonialclothingco.ca/No Sleep Til Sudbury Podcast with Brent Jensen: https://nosleeptilsudbury.libsyn.com/Release Day Spotify Playlist - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0GbiC5YorhQObK1n3FndhJ?si=l0sbbP1ARnaWaDbFRVzpEwRelease Day Website - https://releasedayseries.com/"Release Day," an ongoing series where we sit down with Canadian musicians of all genres to discuss their latest releases from singles to albums, and their strategy behind releasing it to the world.https://releasedayseries.com/https://twitter.com/ReleasedaySrshttps://www.instagram.com/releaseday_series/
I am so excited to share my conversation with Candace Lacina of the "North" Americana Supergroup The Hello Darlins, to talk about the band's debut album Go By Feel, released on June 11, 2021. Formed by Candace and her husband Mike Little - both seasoned songwriters and musicians in their own right, the two have been working as session musicians for artists you may have heard of; Shania Twain, the late B.B. King, George Canyon, and The Road Hammers - to name just a few. In our conversation we talk about what it's been like going from session musician into the spotlight, what they've learned about recording, songwriting, and the release process during their many years in the music industry, and what their experience has been getting back to live shows in 2021If you have music you would like us to hear, or have a great release day rollout plan you want the world to know about, send an email with your EPK and release plan to: contactreleaseday@gmail.comThank you so much for listening, and Welcome to Release Day!Theme music composed by Evan Denley.Reference Links:The Hello Darlins Website: https://thehellodarlins.com/Decolonial Clothing - https://decolonialclothingco.ca/No Sleep Til Sudbury Podcast with Brent Jensen: https://nosleeptilsudbury.libsyn.com/Release Day Spotify Playlist - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0GbiC5YorhQObK1n3FndhJ?si=l0sbbP1ARnaWaDbFRVzpEwRelease Day Website - https://releasedayseries.com/"Release Day," an ongoing series where we sit down with Canadian musicians of all genres to discuss their latest releases from singles to albums, and their strategy behind releasing it to the world.https://releasedayseries.com/https://twitter.com/ReleasedaySrshttps://www.instagram.com/releaseday_series/
Battalion Trek - Adventures and Aha Moments Hiking the Mormon Battalion Trail
The Battalion ate in "messes" and had different cooking pots and eating utensils than we do and... didn't have the luxury of kitchen cupboards to store them. We had food 'boxes' that stored our cooking gear. We talk with Brent Jensen and Phil Smart who built those for us, and share a bit more about the kind of things the Battalion used to prepare their meals. The camp kitchen combined with the food box contents made for a fun time no matter where we were. Just like modern kitchens - many happy memories along the trail were created wherever these two items came out of the big yellow 'Henske' truck! See the Battalion Trek YouTube channel to see photos of the things described in this audio podcast. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/denny-watts-henson/message
This week, the Energy Central Power Perspectives Podcast turns back to the world of Digital Twins as we welcome back a return guest to the podcast: Brent Jensen, a sales engagement director with Bentley Systems. Bent and his team at Bentley have been hard at work transforming the digital sphere of the utility industry, specifically focused on the grid modernization implications of digital twins and the data-focused opportunities they unlock. After first introducing host Jason Price and producer Matt Chester to the possibilities of digital twin on the grid in his appearance on the podcast last year, Brent picks up where he left off to inform listners about how electric utilities can get started and the cascading benefits that come for forward-looking utilities to integrate these grid software solutions. When Jordan Paul, now known as Ellis Meek released ‘Strange,' there was no indication it would turn out to be a quarantine anthem, with a spot on BBC in the South West, and in Le Soundtrack's ‘Best New Canadian Indie Releases.' The track is a call for compassion and empathy, and feels as though it was a direct reaction to the week of April it was released on; just as a global pandemic was peeking its head out to the whole world. In actuality, it was written when Jordan Paul was 17—a young empath just coming to terms with the often dark nature of things, and the fear-based responses people can resort to in lieu of love and connection. October 30th's follow-up “Archetype X” only furthers the singer-songwriter's sentiments, as Paul's oft-layered lyricism is pointedly laid bare in a song that explores the act of journeying inwards for therapeutic release. “Archetype X” was written in a self-processed act of therapy, and comes as the ultimate evolution in Hamiltonian Jordan Paul's distinctive musical style. The song boasts notes of delicate and exploratory alt. folk/rock, taking an expansive journey well beyond its subtle indie-folk roots. After Paul belts out the final refrain in the electrified coda, “Archetype X” fades into a chattering of hazy distortion and thrumming space echo—the welcome and careful calm to ease us back to reposeful contemplation before the song fades into the ether. “Jordan Paul's voice shines like an otherworldly, sophisticated diamond, hypnotic and sure. And with his newest single, he gives us another taste of something we can't get enough of.” Brent Jensen, radio personality, author, and host of No Sleep ‘til Sudbury “Archetype X” is the third release of 2020 from Jordan Paul, recorded at Jonathan Anderson's (Andy Shauf, Aidan Knight, Said the Whale) Protection Island Studios in Maple Ridge, BC, and mastered by Noah Mintz (Marcy Playground, Broken Social Scene, Matt Mays). We'll hear Ellis Meek's song, Archetype X, during the podcast. Find more of his music on Spotify, YouTube, and other streaming platforms. Follow his musical journal on Facebook and Instagram. Brent’s dad, Gary, died two years ago after suffering from a stroke and a hardened carotid artery. Gary was Brent’s best example of hard work but his dad also took time to coach soccer and be there to support his kids in all of their events. Gary was a wrestler in college. He loved westerns and Louis L’Amour books. Most of all he loved his family. It is hard not to have him around as a grandpa for his kids but Brent takes comfort in knowing it isn’t the last time he will see he dad.
This week, Energy Central brings you a special conversation about the digitalization of the utility sector and the imperative role that digital twin technology will play in this industry evolution. Host DW Keefer and Producer Matt Chester are joined in the podcast booth by Brent Jensen, Sales Engagement Director with Bentley Systems, and Wayne Dias, U.S. Product Manager for PSS Sincal from Siemens. Through this engaging and spirited conversation, Brent and Wayne detail the inevitable changes that utility leaders must recognize are going on and argue for why digital twin should be a core focus for all areas of these power providers moving forward. Brent and Wayne break down this complex topic to make their compelling arguments in a way that allows all to understand the importance, whether this is the first you’re hearing of the digital twin or if you’re knee-deep in the digitalization process. By the end of this episode, you’ll be eagerly seeking out the decision-makers at your organization to pass on the argument for digital twins yourself. Snohomish High School's band program celebrates it's 90th year this year, and the allstar jazz ensemble showed us how talented their musicians are. With saxophonists Kate Olson and Brent Jensen in mentor and instructor roles, it's clear there's some fantastic jazz blowing down from the north.
Welcome back! As we near the end of 2019, I want to totally change up the direction and share a conversation that I had with Brent Jensen on his No Sleep Til Sudbury podcast. Brent's podcast is all about music and the power certain songs have on us. On his podcast, Brent talks about those songs and about how music tells us who we are. In this conversation, we dig into my five favourite songs and why I chose them, how they relate to different points in my life, and how I think about music. I think this conversation is really relevant as we enter into the holidays and have a chance to listen to more music. We're also learning more about the effect that music has on our mental health. We're discovering that music can be used as a specific treatment for mental health challenges, especially depression. Recently I was privileged to go to the launch of an initiative called the Awesome Music Project, designed to raise awareness and funds for mental health research across the country. So please enjoy my conversation on amazing music with Brent Jensen! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dr-greg-wells/support
Guitarist Dave Peterson has been the "secret sauce" in the Seattle jazz scene for decades. He taught at Cornish College of the Arts for 35 years, and has added his graceful tones to countless performances and recordings. He's a composer, too, having penned more than 100 works for bands of all sizes. Dave recently started a project with his cousins from Montana, pianist Lee Kohler and bassist Rob Kohler. Along with Brent Jensen on sax and John Bishop on drums, they recorded the album Winter Colors, celebrating its release on Nov. 7 with at live show at Egan's Ballard Jam House, and a delightful KNKX Studio Session the day after. Enjoy the warmth of the "Winter Colors" session! Songs: 1. "I Need You Too" 2. "Graceful" 3. "The Wind Has Gone Down"
Software testing, if done right, is done all the time, throughout the whole life of a software project. This is different than the verification and validation of a classical model of QA teams. It's more of a collaborative model that actually tries to help get great software out the door faster and iterate quicker. One of the people at the forefront of this push is Alan Page. Alan and his podcast cohost Brent Jensen tried to boil down what modern testing looks like in the Modern Testing Principles. I've got Alan here today, to talk about the principles, and also to talk about this transition from classical QA to testing specialists being embedded in software teams and then to software teams doing their own testing. But that only barely scratches the surface of what we cover. I think you'll learn a lot from this discussion. The seven principles of Modern Testing (http://moderntesting.org): Our priority is improving the business. We accelerate the team, and use models like Lean Thinking and the Theory of Constraints to help identify, prioritize and mitigate bottlenecks from the system. We are a force for continuous improvement, helping the team adapt and optimize in order to succeed, rather than providing a safety net to catch failures. We care deeply about the quality culture of our team, and we coach, lead, and nurture the team towards a more mature quality culture. We believe that the customer is the only one capable to judge and evaluate the quality of our product We use data extensively to deeply understand customer usage and then close the gaps between product hypotheses and business impact. We expand testing abilities and knowhow across the team; understanding that this may reduce (or eliminate) the need for a dedicated testing specialist. Special Guest: Alan Page.

Whoa!!! My man Jamie Blaine takes over the show all the way from Nashville and plays the role of host, allowing me to get in on the fun and talk a little bit about the songs that make MY skin vibrate. Jamie does an outstanding hosting job, taking me through that very wide spectrum of emotions that all my songs conjure up - the cocaine, the Quaaludes, and everything in between. My playlist: AC/DC - Sin City Paul McCartney - Maybe I'm Amazed Led Zeppelin - Down By The Seaside Aimee Mann - Wise Up Motley Crue - Looks That Kill Stereophonics - Handbags and Glad Rags Stone Temple Pilots - Sour Girl Lake Street Dive - Rental Love KISS - Sure Know Something
