David Cronenwett - Lessons from Jiu-Jitsu, On and Off the Mats

David Cronenwett is the owner of Helena Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a third-degree black belt under American Jiu-Jitsu legend Rafael Lovato Jr. David started his Jiu-Jitsu journey in Seattle in 1996, back when finding a place to train was like stumbling upon a secret society. Over the years, he's not only refined his own game but has shared this art with hundreds of students in Montana's capital city since opening his academy in 2016. But David's path to Jiu-Jitsu wasn't exactly a straight shot. He grew up in New Jersey, made his way west to study classical guitar at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle right as the grunge scene was taking over, and eventually found himself in Montana, drawn by the wilderness and a deep-rooted need for something more. That “something more” turned out to be a mix of conservation work, backcountry living, and, of course, Jiu-Jitsu—an art that would come to define much of his life. In this conversation, we go deep into the philosophy of Jiu-Jitsu: why it grabs certain people and won't let go, how it humbles you, how it teaches you to remain calm under pressure, and how it can serve as a vehicle for self-improvement. But beyond that, we explore how Jiu-Jitsu teaches lessons that stretch far beyond the mats—lessons about patience, resilience, adaptability, and how to wisely face challenges in life. We also talk about the importance of culture in an academy, how a good training environment can shape people beyond the gym, and how the shared purpose and community of Jiu-Jitsu has a way of bringing together folks from all walks of life. And for those of you who might be on the fence about trying Jiu-Jitsu, David has plenty to say about why it's never too late to start and how it can change not just how you move, but how you see the world. So whether you're a seasoned grappler or just curious about what makes this martial art so addictive, there's a lot to learn from this conversation. In today's episode, I'm joined by Joan Leegant to discuss her new short story collection, Displaced Persons. Joan shares insights into her writing process, including how she often begins stories with no preset idea and allows stories to emerge from a first sentence. Many of Joan's stories are set among immigrants and Americans living in Israel. And while Joan's collection was accepted for publication before October 7th, it came in June, in the midst of a highly polarized and frightening time for people on every side of the current conflict. So we talk about what it's been like for Jewish writers publishing today, and also the way that fiction allows for empathic connections not always available in daily life."My method of writing anything, particularly short stories, is that I have no clue what I'm going to do when I sit down to write it. I have no clue what it's going to be about." Key Takeaways* Joan's collection is set in Israel and America, focusing on displaced individuals. She highlights the interplay of naive Americans with complex realities, particularly in Israel.* A notable story, Displaced Persons, features an American teaching English to African refugees. Joan explores the absurdity of a country founded by displaced persons dealing with new displaced populations.* "The material just was kind of urging itself to come out," Joan says about the stories she wrote while working on other novels. It's a testament to the compelling nature of the themes she explores.* In Remittances, the narrator empathizes with marginalized workers in Tel Aviv. It's a story of immigrants in a land that symbolizes a second chance, reflecting Israel as a haven for those on the edge.* Another powerful story, Beautiful Souls, follows two American girls in Jerusalem. Their naivete leads them into dangerous situations, showcasing the often startling collision of American innocence with Israeli realities.* Joan's stories on mental illness are deeply human, exploring family dynamics through the lens of mental health, not as a central theme but as a way to navigate complex relationships.* We discuss the impact of the Israel-Gaza war and the polarized publishing landscape. Though accepted before the October 7 attacks, Displaced Persons landed post-crisis, and Joan says she's navigated the current landscape by focusing on the universal human elements of her stories.* Fiction is transformative. Joan cites the power of fiction to expand empathy, offering a “glimpse into some deeper truth.” It's about illuminating the complexities of life through imagined worlds.* Leegant's belief in the power of fiction to expand empathy is echoed by George Saunders, who describes a story as a "black box" that provides a deeper glimpse into human nature. "You need to illuminate human truth, but you do it through imagined stories," says Leegant.* Joan's idea of “associative leaps” in writing, where characters' truths emerge organically, enriches her storytelling. Her characters' voices and feelings drive the narrative, rather than a pre-planned agenda.* On navigating the current volatile landscape: Joan learned to balance sensitivity with openness, not shying away from broader literary and academic engagements, while being mindful of the potential for polarization.* During a recent visit to Israel, Joan facilitated writing workshops helping teachers process trauma through expressive writing, a poignant testament to the healing power of storytelling.* We discuss fiction's ability to explore complex human conditions and to bridge gaps of empathy and understanding. "Our capacity should not be just read about people we already know, or we are exactly alike, but people we are nothing like," Leegant remarks."Our capacity should not be just read about people we already know, or we are exactly alike, but people we are nothing like." About Joan LeegantJoan Leegant's new story collection, Displaced Persons, won the New American Fiction Prize. Joan's first collection, An Hour in Paradise, won the PEN/New England Book Award and the Wallant Award, and was a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award and a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick. Amid mergers and layoffs, how is Seattle's theater scene doing?

There has been an onslaught of news in Seattle's theater community.  Earlier this year, Seattle Rep announced it was laying off the majority of its artistic staff. The non-profit theater's subscription base is half of what it was before the pandemic. And that isn't the only change in the theater world: The 5TH Avenue Theatre is shutting down its new works program. ACT Theatre is exploring a merger with Seattle Shakespeare. Now, to be clear, these aren't the only theaters in town, there are many, many smaller theaters throughout King County, like Second Story Repertory in Redmond, and Green Lake's Seattle Public Theater which has merged with Matcha Theatre Works. But for major players like the Rep, 5TH Ave, Village Theatre, and ACT, the climb out of the pandemic has been tough. Guests: John Langs, Artistic Director of ACT Theatre Sheila Daniels, Assistant Professor at Cornish College of the Arts Aviona Rodriguez Brown, Associate Director of Engagement at 5TH Avenue Theatre and founder and CEO of ARB Consulting Arts. Relevant Links: Seattle Times: Seattle Rep layoffs to include majority of its artistic staff Seattle Times: ACT Contemporary Theatre and Seattle Shakespeare Company may merge soon Seattle Times: John Langs, artistic director of Seattle's ACT Theatre, to step down CORRECTION: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that Seattle Theater Group merged with Matcha Theater Works; the organization that merged with Matcha Theater Works is called Seattle Public Theater. An earlier version of this podcast also stated that Seattle Rep and Seattle Children's Theatre merged. This overstates the recently announced partnership between these two theaters. Seattle Children's and Seattle Rep have instead combined forces on a few functionalities like box office, IT, and database administration.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Joan Leegant's new story collection, Displaced Persons (New American Press 2024) delves into human stories of living in the 21st century. Characters transform after illness or divorce, move to a new city or a new country, get caught between different cultures and traditions, or stumble into scary situations. People can be resilient about change and might rebuild themselves after loss, suffering, and illness, but they don't all bounce back with equal fervor. Characters struggle with Jewish identity, family issues, social expectations, and health, and stories are set now and, in the past. Some stories are in the states, others are in Europe and Israel. This is a brave collection during a time when antisemitism is bubbling up again, and memories of times past seem surprisingly current. Joan Leegant's first book of stories, An Hour in Paradise: Stories (W.W. Norton, 2003), won the PEN/New England Book Award and the Edward Lewis Wallant Award, and was a Finalist for the National Jewish Book Award and a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick. She is also the author of a novel, Wherever You Go (W. W. Norton, 2010). Her prize-winning stories have appeared in over two dozen literary magazines and anthologies. She has also written essays and pieces on writing craft. Paul Cimins interviews Mitch Malloy, an American singer, best known as the former lead vocalist for the rock band Great White from 2018 to 2022. Malloy studied music at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington. He got his first break when he was signed to RCA. Malloy's self-titled first album featured session musicians such as Mickey Curry, Hugh McDonald and Michael Thompson.[1] His first single as a solo artist on RCA records, "Anything At All", was a top 20 rock charting hit and a pop hit in the US.[5] His third single, "Our Love Will Never Die", earned him an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.[1] His second album, Ceilings And Walls, featured guest musicians such as Bernie Leadon, Mike Rutherford and Paul Carrack.[6] He auditioned to be the singer of hard rock band Van Halen after Sammy Hagar's departure.[7][8][9] Malloy recorded various demos with the band, and Eddie Van Halen gave Malloy an instrumental demo to use for his own endeavors. This song was released by Malloy in 2015 as "It's the Right Time".[10]The riff reemerged in the sessions leading up to Van Halen's 1998 studio album Van Halen III in the song "That's Why I Love You." The song was scrapped from the record in favor of "Josephina."[11] Malloy has had a lengthy career featuring in various bands as lead singer, releasing solo albums, and making guest appearances as well. His latest album marks his first time completing an entire release all on his own.[12] Visit  his website to learn more about him. www.mitchmalloy.com

Described by Eric Fischl as “the best and most disturbing painter of flesh alive today,” Chapin's work has explored aging, gender and beauty, influenced in part by the community within which she was raised on an island in the Pacific Northwest. More recently, Chapin's work has taken a radically inward shift, expanding her visual language in order to better express the turbulent times we are living in. Consistent throughout her career, Chapin's work asks the question: What does it mean to exist within a body today? Chapin holds a BFA from Cornish College of the Arts and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art. She has attended residencies at the Leipzig International Art Program (Germany) and MacDowell (United States). Chapin has exhibited both nationally and internationally at places such as Flowers Gallery (New York, London, Hong Kong), The Belvedere Museum (Austria), and the National Portrait Gallery (London). Tyler Stone's Exclusive TDJS Mix presented by The DJ Sessions 8/17/22 About Tyler Stone -   Tyler Stone is a producer/remixer, DJ and vocalist who has built her career as one of the first female house music producers, and has achieved several top ten Billboard Dance hits with her distinctive style rooted in deep house, disco, and downtempo.  After receiving a degree in Jazz from Cornish College of the Arts, Tyler relocated to San Francisco to join the legendary Third Floor Productions where she cut her teeth under the tutelage of the masterful DJ EFX, and began showcasing her talents with some of Dance and Pop music's finest artists.  This lead to a string of releases and remixes under the name “Ms T” on numerous dance labels such as Strictly Rhythm, Eightball, and Henry Street, with name acts including Armand Van Helden, Robin S, Crystal Waters and Kimara Lovelace as well as N'SYNC.  As an integral part of the 90's San Francisco dance music scene, Tyler went on to open her own studio, Ms T Productions, and became the “go to” engineer within the house music community, working alongside such producers as Miguel Migs and Grammy nominated Jay-J and Chris Lum. Without skipping a beat, Tyler continues to push the envelope as a producer, lending her sophisticated programming to remixes and collaborations on reputable labels including Nervous and Aventura.  Her tracks continue to chart, and receive regular features and playlist adds.  Channeling the disco, funk and soul of her youth, and the house music of the early 90's, Tyler's tracks have a magic that draws you into the essence of the song.  “As a vocalist myself, I tend to pay special attention to how the vocals interact both rhythmically and melodically with the rest of the track.”  But make no mistake, at the core of every track is the beat, ready to groove your body at any BPM. Tyler's production savvy can also be heard in her DJ skills spinning deep house, disco and downtempo.  Whether opening for Little Dragon, or playing the private after parties for such bands as Thievery Corporation and Mayor Hawthorne's Tuxedo, Tyler brings an infectious groove to the party.  She has also held residencies at the W Hotel and Ian Schrager's Clift Hotel and has been called upon frequently to play at exclusive events for the SFMOMA and Make-A-Wish Foundation.   Tyler is an active voting member of the Recording Academy (GRAMMY's) and has served as a National Trustee, as well as Governor for the Pacific NW and San Francisco Chapters.  Tyler has proudly participated on many committees involving the awards process, membership, advocacy and community outreach. Her obsessive study of neuroscience, creative process, intuition, mindfulness, and flow make her a pro at connecting individuals to their intuition and creative spark. We cover a wide range of topics in this hour-long episode. You can look forward to hearing about the following: Connecting creativity to intuitionExploring your inner wisdomThe art of flow: heightened consciousness influenced by creativityCuriosity and lifelong learningOpen mode thinkingBrainwave statesHow spirituality and science work togetherTrusting yourself in mind and body, embodying intuitionJournal prompts to get in touch with intuitionRedefining traumaBringing compassion to ourselvesThe benefits of creating a morning process Pull Quotes“I grew up in a very dogmatic religion and church, and there was, like, abuse and trauma there. And so, you know, I think a lot of times people think that artists are very driven by their intuition, very flowy, you know, very connected to themselves. And that just wasn't the case. For me, I was, I knew I was always intuitive, but I was always driven by either what I should do, my logical mind, or what other people wanted me to do, or what God wanted me to do, things like that. I had all these voices in my head, but none of them were my inner voice.”“I think all of us have these points in our life where life asks us to go deeper. Let go of those layers, go deeper, to the authentic. So I just got to this point where it's like, you know what? I am just gonna listen to my intuition.”“Our intuition really, most of the time speaks through the body. If we are detached from our bodies, if we're like, really in our head, it's really hard for us to get into flow. So when we connect to our intuition, we're able to sense our body. They call it introspection. So feeling like what it feels inside your body, then we're able to get triggered into flow.”“If you've worked in corporate America, or, you know, you've taken any classes about how to brand yourself, or whatever, you know that we're taught that we need to kind of just use our logical mind to create, like a pretty package of what people want. We just have to figure that package out, right? Most of us are going into the creative process, whether it be a project or whether it be our own business, using your logical mind… It's based on slavery, on industralization, on consumerism. So we have to flip the model.”“When you are looking at things from that very narrow, analytical point of view, you're actually using the analytical brain, which actually bases all of its information off of what it's experienced before. So when you open up to open mode, you actually can tap into more of your brain, more of your subconscious, and that's where your intuition lives. Turning that to neuroscience, we now know that with 95 to 98% of our knowledge, approximately 90% of that is subconscious. That's where a lot of this knowledge lies. So when we can actually tap into that open mode, we're starting with all these possibilities first.”“it's just really, really fascinating to me. How, you know, how all the science is kind of coming together and showing us all these things. And some of them are really connected to deep spiritual truths that have been around for a long time.”“You have the answers within you. I think one of the hardest things is for people to trust, or begin to trust their intuition, because all of your life, you've been told that you need to look outside yourself, for answers for permission. It's not your fault. You know, it's hard to trust ourselves. But it's so worth it.”“We've been so conditioned to ignore our needs and our bodies, even as babies. We cry? We get reprimanded. We pull hair? We get reprimanded. We say what we mean, and we get pushed down, right? So we've been taught to kind of push our feelings down and ignore the things that our body needs. So, I say: just begin to listen to those impulses. And maybe write about how that feels.”“What has your intuition been nudging you to do?”“My whole process starts with curiosity, exploration, play, and that broader expansiveness, and then funneling down into focus.” Mentions and More Info: Esther's InstagramEsther's Website: Flow Into Authenticity Esther's art shopArtist Flora BowleyPsychologist Mihaly CsikszentmihalyiJohn Cleese and “open mode thinking”Brainwave statesDr. Gabor Mate - The Wisdom of TraumaResmaa MenakemScott Barry Kaufman And Bloom by Denise BoomkensKevin James Thornton Reclamation is yours,Megan
