In today's episode, we talk with Erik Rohde about conducting and education! Erik Rohde maintains a diverse career as a conductor, violinist, and educator, and has performed in recitals and festivals across the United States and in Europe and Asia. He is the Director of Orchestral Activities at the University of Northern Iowa and the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Winona Symphony Orchestra (MN). Prior to his appointment at the University of Northern Iowa, Rohde served as the Director of String Activities and Orchestra at Indiana State University where he conducted the Indiana State University Symphony Orchestra and taught violin, chamber music, and Suzuki pedagogy. In Indiana, he also founded the Salomon Chamber Orchestra, an orchestra dedicated to promoting the works of living composers and of Haydn and his contemporaries. Having grown up in Rochester, Rohde is particularly excited to return to his hometown to conduct the orchestra that includes former teachers, classmates, and colleagues. He began his musical studies with Linda Thompson on the violin at the age of 4 and first heard the Rochester Symphony at one of their annual educational concerts a few years later. Having begun his musical journey in Rochester, this is an exciting chance to return and make music in a new way in a community that he loves and one that helped shape the early part of his musical journey. A committed advocate for contemporary music, he has premiered and commissioned many new works by both established and young composers, and is constantly seeking to discover new compositional voices. In addition to regularly bringing new orchestral works to programs each season, he is the violinist of the new music duo sonic apricity, which is dedicated to uncovering and commissioning new works by living composers for violin and viola. The duo released their first recording on the Navona label in December of 2022. At Indiana State University, he helped to host the annual Contemporary Music Festival – now running for over 50 years. He has worked with Joan Tower, Augusta Read Thomas, Libby Larsen, Chen Yi, Meira Warshauer, Elliott Miles McKinley, Christopher Walczak, Michael-Thomas Foumai, Pierre Jalbert, James Dillon, David Dzubay, Marc Mellits, Carter Pann, Narong Prangcharoen and countless others. In 2019, he released two recordings with composer Elliott Miles McKinley, conducting his percussion concerto Four Grooves and performing on his eighth string quartet. In his native Minnesota, Rohde has served as the Music Director of the Buffalo Community Orchestra, conductor and violinist for the Contemporary Music Workshop, Camarata Suzuki orchestra conductor for the MacPhail Center for Music, String Ensemble conductor at the Trinity School, and first violinist of the Cantiamo and Enkidu String Quartets. Rohde holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Conducting from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, where he studied with conductors Mark Russell Smith, Kathy Saltzman Romey, and Craig Kirchhoff and violin pedagogue Mark Bjork. He also holds degrees in Violin Performance and Biomedical Engineering. Rohde lives in Cedar Falls, IA with his wife Erin and their children. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this season, New Century Chamber Orchestra has been resident in San Francisco's Bay Area since its founding in 1992. One of just a handful of conductorless chamber orchestras in the world, the ensemble makes collaborative musical decisions, leading to an enhanced level of engagement from all involved. My guest today is Immanuel Abraham, a very special musican, who is an inspiring violinist, educator and composer. His phenomenal talent, discipline and creativity is even more inspiring since he didn't have an opportunity to learn a musical instrument until the age of 14 and 4 years later, he was auditioning for the renowned University of Michigan in violin performance, playing the same Paganini caprice he'd heard Ithak Perlman play on Shalom Sesame as a child. He speaks candidly in this interview about his perseverence in the face of very difficult challenges. More information and links below, including Timestamps! DescriptionSome thought that the virtuoso violinist Paganini was a metaphorical musical God, others thought he literally got his virtuosity from a deal with the Devil. But what was the real story behind Niccolò Paganini's genius? Take a minute to get the scoop!Check out the trailer for The Devil's ViolinistFun FactKnown particularly for his fiendish 24 Caprices for Solo Violin, Paganini helped popularise certain string techniques such as bow bounces – spiccato – as well as left-hand pizzicato and harmonics. He also purposely mistuned strings to make certain pieces easier to play. It is said he could play 12 notes per second – a feat later achieved by violinist David Garrett, who plays Paganini in The Devil's Violinist, a 2013 film based on the composer's life story. It is now believed that Paganini's unusual finger length, which allowed him to play three octaves in one hand span, was due to Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder. Equally, his ability to play at incredible speed could be attributed to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a disorder which causes increased flexibility and a lack of coordination.About Steven, HostSteven is a Canadian composer living in Toronto. If you're not a violinist, you might not be familiar with the name Eugene Ysaye. But this violinist and composer was called “The King of the Violin” at the turn of the 20th century. Ysaye's biggest compositional achievement was inspired by a performance by the legendary Joseph Szigeti in 1923. Enraptured, Ysaye went into his studio and 24 hours later (!), he emerged with 6 solo violin sonatas, each dedicated to one of his favorite violinists. Dive in with us this week to learn all about these amazing works!
For this week's Gramophone Podcast Editor Martin Cullingford is joined by the acclaimed violinist and conductor Fabio Biondi to talk about the complete Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin by JS Bach, which he has just recorded for the Naïve label. Learn what it takes to create a compelling arrangement of a Pop, Rock, or Jazz tune and the factors that help determine whether a song is a good candidate for solo violin treatment or if it needs an ensemble or band to do it justice. If, like host Laurel Thomsen, your performance life has been requiring you to learn new songs in various non-Classical genres lately, or if you have a favorite song you hope to translate to your instrument, we discuss the tools within a violinist's and other bowed string player's technique that can help bring tunes originally written with vocals and lyrics to life in new ways. We also explore musical roles within an ensemble and discuss how different instrument choices can elevate an arrangement. Finally, we cover some tips on how to present performance and repertoire options to a client during the booking process to ensure that expectations are met and song requests are realized. A word of thanks from Laurel: Many thanks to the clients who have booked me for their weddings and events over the years, and who help me stretch outside my comfort zone with new song requests. Also, thanks to the other musicians adding their musical contributions to this episode: Dan Frechette, acoustic guitar - www.danfrechette.com, and Dan Robbins, doublebass - www.danrobbinsmusic.com. A commentary on the human artistic endeavor. Helga Thoene proposes in her essay that Johann Sebastian Bach embedded into the ciaccona (Partita in D minor for solo violin (BWV 1004) numerous mathematical and musical references making the work a memorial, or trombeau, to his deceased wife, Maria Barbara Bach, who died in 1720. Check out a recording of the Partita here The album Morimur by the Hilliard Ensemble can be found here More about the research by Thoene can be found here, here, and here.

In this episode of the Classical Post Podcast, concert violinist Alexi Kenney shares his experience of releasing a visual album (Paul Wianko's X Suite for Solo Violin) earlier this year that was filmed in wine country at a fabulous estate in Sonoma, California. The Donum Estate was founded 20 years ago on 190 idyllic acres. Today, 91one those acres are planted with grapes such as pinot noir and chardonnay. But more interestingly, the grounds are dotted with an incredible sculpture collection of modern art. The resulting series of videos from this album — that you can watch on YouTube — features Alexi playing amidst this dynamic landscape of Vineyard-bliss and contemporary sculptures. He commissioned the composer Paul Wiancko to write this work called X Suite for Solo Violin. The visual album pairs the seven movements with seven sculptures at this vineyard. The work originally premiered at London's prestigious Wigmore Hall in 2019. But now this is the recording premiere in multiple formats — the video on YouTube and audio recordings you can find on Spotify, Apple Music, etc. Alexi is one of those people that sees art as "total art", encompassing not just what you hear, but what you see and experience in the physical world. I know I personally value this and want the classical music world to move in this direction. But for now, I want to highlight his viewpoint on just that — creating art music that's not in a vacuum, but inextricably tied to the visual experience. How is this valuable to you? Some might find art music esoteric, but I'm here to showcase Alexi's work as something that's approachable just as you would approach a wine pairing at a fine restaurant. To take the analogy further, imagine a summer's night on Nantucket. You've just had dinner with the sun setting over the water. You've had a fine bottle of champagne. And now you're getting ready to leave and have a cigar by the fire, now that the cool breeze is sweeping off the coast. All of these elements are uniquely beautiful — the food, the view, the champagne, the fire — but if you eliminate one of these, it's still beautiful, but not as complete. That's the best way I can describe this discussion of art we have in this podcast episode. The total package becomes transcendent, picking us up from the mundane and placing us in a state of elevated consciousness. I hope you enjoy my chat with Alexi Kenney who The New York Times calls “spellbinding". -- Classical Post explores the intersection of classical music, style, and wellness, diving into meaningful conversations with leading artists from an array of different backgrounds. The music of Johann Sebastian Bach is a lifetime companion for many violinists. And in our time of Covid-19 isolation, his Six Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin have taken on a new resonance. These pieces are spiritual, virtuosic, joyful - and enigmatic.
The concluding chapter of our two part presentation of 'Scarlet Caprice for Solo Violin' by the extraordinary Vincent Robert-Nicoud. The piece of music we took such presumptuous liberties with in this production is 'Caprice for Solo Violin no. 5' by Niccolò Paganini performed by Ruggerio Ricci. The original recording is in the public domain. Our diabolical reworking, thankfully, is not. ---- NOCTURNAL TRANSMISSIONS is a fortnightly podcast featuring inspired performances of short horror stories, both old and new, by voice artist Kristin Holland. https://www.nocturnaltransmissions.com.au You can support us by becoming a patron at Patreon.com: https://www.patreon.com/nocturnaltransmissions
The Bach Chaconne is one of the great masterpieces of Western Classical Music, and today we're going to be diving straight into this monumental work. We'll talk about the legends behind its composition, the work itself, different interpretations of the piece, and its many many arrangements. As Brahms wrote about the piece: “On one stave, for a small instrument, the man writes a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings." Join us to discuss this towering artistic achievement!
Phantom Echoes In This Nightmare Tale... ---Tales From The Vault Episode 11--- Mr. Izvertzoff, a wealthy Russian landowner, mysteriously disappears while visiting a cavern on his land - the so-called "Cave Of The Echoes". He is presumed to have been murdered and the finger of blame is pointed firmly at his man-servant, Ivan. Many years after the tragedy, an enigmatic Hungarian traveler and a mysterious Tibetan shaman conduct an eerie ceremony within the cave to determine the true identity of the murderer. Mesmerized by the atmosphere of the place and the ghostly echoes which reverberate through the cave, the onlookers are shocked to learn the truth of what happened to Mr Izvertzoff. Helena Petrovna Blavatsky was a Russian philosopher and author who co-founded the Theosophical Society in 1875. While best known for her occult knowledge and the book "The Secret Doctrine", she also wrote a collection of fictional short stories, collected in a volume called "Nightmare Tales", first published in 1907. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and producing this story, and look forward to reading a few more of HPB's Nightmare Tales very soon. Spilleliste (tekst) Venom - From the Very Depths Paganini, Ruggiero Ricci - 24 Caprices for Solo Violin, Op. 1: No. 24 Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds Venom - Blackened Blues Britney Spears - Stronger The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be (500 miles) Chas & Dave - Snooker Loopy Sigmund Dehli - Fugledansen Dean Martin - Rudolph, the Red-nosed Reindeer Støtt Jernverket økonomisk via Patreon eller Vipps-nummer 567438.
