Today, we’re celebrating what would have been the 90th birthday of Elvis Presley. There’s been a lot written and said about The King over the years, but in this episode, we’re going to let Elvis do a lot of the talking. We have some amazing audio from the early years. Most of these clips are from the mid to late ‘50s – and they capture a lot of the excitement – and the freshness of Elvis Plus we have clips from the people who were there… - his label mate Carl Perkins talks about touring with Elvis and Johnny Cash before any of them were well known. - Dick Clark describes how Elvis was seen as a sort of villain compared to the likes of Pat Boone - Ed Sullivan explains why Elvis could only be shown from the waist up on his third visit to his show. - His collaborators in the late ‘60s explain the stories behind his comeback hits. All of these clips are from around the time that these events happened – so they capture history as history was being made. Plus, we’ll hear from some of the people who worked with Elvis over the years who will tell the stories behind some of his biggest songs. Also, Tom asks Christopher to explain how a trip to Graceland in 1987 with a bunch of Elvis fans led to the creation of “Black Velvet”, which of course was a massive worldwide hit for his musical partner and friend Alannah Myles. And best of all, we hear from the two people who knew Elvis best – his daughter Lisa Marie (in a 2005 chat) and his widow Priscilla (from 2006). Famous Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 100 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville. It is in the Top 20% of worldwide podcasts based on the number of listeners in the first week.
Hi everybody and welcome to another episode of the TALK MUSIC podcast! My guest this week is BOB ROPER! This is a great, entertaining deep dive into his illustrious career. Bob has done it all! From booking concerts at university to doing major label promo, to working for top concert promoter MICHAEL COHL doing marketing. Bob then became an A&R guru at WARNER Music where he signed acts such as HONEYMOON SUITE, BLUE RODEO and FROZEN GHOST. He also helped ALANNAH MYLES and RUSH get their US careers going. Before joining Warner, he spent time as tour manager of SUPERTRAMP who, then at the peak of their career, ended up playing Madison Square Garden. After leaving Warner, Bob jumped into management working closely with SHARON LOIS AND BRAM, where he brought them to another level before moving on to handle A&R/management for the SRO/ANTHEM company (home of RUSH, GOWAN, MAX WEBSTER & CONEY HATCH).Following that, Bob ran his own management company (GOWAN, MOLLY JOHNSON) and then taught at the HARRIS INSTITUTE for 30 years! Wanting to be closer to home, Bob spent a couple of years working at the PRECISION manufacturing company and he just recently retired.I truly loved this interview as I also had a chance to THANK Bob for taking a chance on me as Producer of the debut album for HONEYMOON SUITE.His faith in me and the massive success of the 4 Top 10 singles (and TRIPLE PLATINUM sales of the album) was a game changer for me and changed my life forever!! Take a listen, there's lots of interesting stories in this one and I can honestly say Bob really is another one of the really good guys out there. ENJOY! Hosted on Acast. After two decades of pursuing a music career, a 30 year old Canadian singer named Alannah Myles scored a #1 hit in 1989 with “Black Velvet”. While her success continued for years after in the Great White North, she completely fell off the Billboard charts of the United States. This week, we try to determine if the blame for her US decline should fall on the lack of promotion from her record label, or if the rest of Alannah's catalog just lacked that slow southern style. Damn Yankees is the debut album from the supergroup of the same name. Damn Yankees features Tommy Shaw of Styx on guitars and vocals, Jack Blades from Night Ranger is on bass and vocals, Ted Nugent is on guitars and vocals, and Michael Cartellone is on percussion and vocals. Cartellone was a relative unknown musician at the time, but he is now playing drums for the band Lynyrd Skynyrd. A&R's John Kalodner is credited with getting the band together. At the time Shaw was in and out of Styx, Blades was available after Night Ranger dissolved, and Nugent was in a lull in his solo work. Nugent and Shaw were the first brought together, and this might seem like an unusual pairing given their previous work. However the two bonded very quickly over their appreciation for R&B, soul, and Motown music. Blades and Shaw took the lion's share of lead vocal duties on this album, and the pair complemented each other. Both had extensive experience harmonizing with others in their previous bands, and this carried over to Damn Yankees.Their debut album would be successful, led by the rock ballad "High Enough" which would hit number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. A second album would be released in 1992 which would be less successful than the first. After this second album Nugent would concentrate on his solo work. Tommy Shaw and Jack Blades would produce a couple of albums under the name Shaw Blades, but would soon return to their respective groups (Shaw to Styx, Blades to Night Ranger). Guest contributor John Lynch joins us for this podcast. Damn YankeesThis is the title song off the album, and a deeper cut. You get a lot of Ted Nugent's guitar work on this one. All songs were a collaborative effort, with Blades, Shaw, and Nugent receiving writing credits. Coming of AgeAccording to Songfacts, Tommy Shaw began plunking out the opening riff on piano when the group was working at Jack Blades House. Blades came up with the opening lines of lyrics, and the group moved to guitars to jam out the rest organically. Blades takes lead vocal duties here, with Shaw providing high harmonies.RunawayThis song is somewhat of a deeper cut, as it was the fourth single from the album. It is, as the name suggests, a song about a young runaway who lives on the streets of the city. It hit number 9 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, but did not make the Billboard Hot 100. Come AgainTommy Shaw takes lead vocal duties on this song, and it has a sound reminiscent of some of this work with Styx. It is about about a girl to whom the guy can't seem to leave behind.. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series "Mission Impossible"The television series reboot inspired by the Tom Cruise movies ended in February 1990. STAFF PICKS:Kickstart My Heart by Motley CrueWayne kickstarts the staff picks with The Crue off the album "Dr. Feelgood." This song was supposedly inspired by an incident when Nikki Sixx overdosed, and the paramedic injected adrenaline into his heart. This metal song made it to number 27 on the pop charts. Dangerous by RoxetteJohn features Swedish duo Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle. Both Fredriksson and Gessle were successful solo artists before coming together to join Roxette. The group toured until 2016 when Fredriksson was diagnosed with brain cancer. She passed in 2019.Black Velvet by Alannah Myles"Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell. Jimmy Rogers on the Victrola up high." Rob's staff pick is a sultry blues number with a shuffle beat. Songwriters Christopher Ward and David Tyson wrote this in homage to Elvis Presley. Myles' single came out in December 1989, and Robin Lee's country cover appeared shortly thereafter.I Wish It Would Rain Down by Phil CollinsBruce's staff pick is a ballad from Collin's 1989 album "...But Seriously". Eric Clapton plays lead guitar. The song is about a lost relationship, though Collins said in an interview that it "is about a frustrated weatherman that regularly predicts rain showers but never gets it right." We'll let you be the judge on the accuracy of that interpretation. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Cliffs of Dover by Eric JohnsonGuitar virtuoso Eric Johnson takes us out with his big instrumental hit which was on the charts at the time, and would become even more famous on the video game Guitar Hero.

Pete and Tom try and catch a moonbeam in their hand by discussing the intangible nature of charismatic main musicians in this week's episode. We learn that Freddie Mercury possibly had extra teeth, Melissa Etheridge isn't Alannah Myles, Harry Lines doesn't exist and that Tom was caught mime-drumming naked.
Liner Notes: Revealing Chats With Canada's Retro Music Makers
Christopher Ward has written songs for Diana Ross, Wynonna Judd, The Backstreet Boys, and many others. His best-known song is the worldwide #1 hit for Alannah Myles, “Black Velvet," for which he received the Juno award for Songwriter of the Year in 1990. In this chat with Dan Hare Christopher shares: his start in radio; becoming one of the first VJs for Much Music; songwriting approaches then and now; the scoop on his solo hits 'Maybe Your Heart' and 'Once In A Long Time'; his time at Second City and his friendships with Colin Mockery, Mike Myers and Ron James; info. on his new album 'Same River Twice', and so much more.
Christopher Ward started at City Limits in Toronto before becoming one of the original VJ's for MUCH MUSIC along with J.D Roberts. He spent 5 years at Much interviewing the likes of George Harrison and Tina Turner and of course hosting FROMAGE! Chris also is a singer songwriter who penned the hit "Black Velvet" by Alannah Myles ! he has written for Amanda Marshall, Backstreet Boys and Diana Ross. His book "IS THIS LIVE" chronicles the days at Much Music and he has a new album "SAME RIVER TWICE" coming out MAY 28th 2021 with a re-recording and rendition of Black Velvet
When we set out to help the music industry, we had a just an idea. That idea was nurtured, shared among a few other people that we knew were excited about it and over the past year that idea has grown into a movement. We are reinventing the game and rewriting the rules when it comes to the music industry and health and wellness. Los Cabos Artist, Dan Todd and his lovely wife, Natalie Belmont were two of those people that just got it. Today's show is all about the behind the scenes steps it takes to craft something bigger than you. We knew there was an issue out there in regards to how to navigate the lifestyle, and we wanted to hear it from the people that have lived it. Dan has a few decades of professional touring experience. Dan has had the humbling privilege to work with: FLUDD, Honeymoon Suite, Alannah Myles, Mike Reno (Loverboy), Alen Frew (Glass Tiger), Jimi Jamison (Survivor), Kenny Maclean (Platinum Blonde), Gord Deppe (The Spoons), Rob Laidlaw, Bobby Cameron, Greg Godovitz (GODDO), Gino Scarpelli (GODDO), Jeff Jones (Red Ryder), Jim Gilmour (SAGA), Jimmy Crighton (SAGA), Ian Crighton (SAGA), Russ Dwarf (The Killer Dwarfs, Hardroad), Nick Walsh (Famous Underground, Slik Toxik), Dale Russell (The Guess Who), Platinum Blonde After this much life on the road, you start to pick up on some trends... Dan's wife, Natalie Belmont also joined in on the conversation as she accompanied Dan on many of the tours and has seen and lived the touring lifestyle as well. We thought it would be a great bit of insight to see how families do it and how things vary for the household when an artist kicks on on tour. Natalie is a Host on The Shopping Channel, and together with Dan is very committed to living well through food, exercise and fostering healthy relationships. This power couple was a blast to chat with as they were amidst home renovations and a fairly active season in the fall, which just goes to show that whatever comes up can be navigated with the right tools, some effort and the willingness and discipline to do so. Check out Dan on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/dantoddfanpage/ and instagram at instagram.com/drummerdantodd And Natalie on Instagram @nataliebelmont_ Again, big thanks to all the artists and industry that weighted in and shared their insight. Hey! This is part two of my chat with author and MuchMusic veteran Christopher Ward. We finally get to the songs that make his skin vibrate, and hearing Christopher's take on them was a great experience for me. Highlights of our music geekfest discussion include Bob Dylan's revenge themes, the inspiration behind him writing Alannah Myles megahit "Black Velvet", who "Son of a Preacher Man" was initially written for, and the time he danced with The Temptations on Much. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did. Throughout April and May of 1990 The Carpenters found themselves at number one for a staggering seven weeks with a Best Of compilation. But for one week in the middle of it Fleetwood Mac nicked the top spot off them with 'Behind The Mask' so that's what we discuss in this episode. We do briefly talk about the Carpenters as well, and Jason Donovan and Alannah Myles for good measure. A playlist of all the songs we talk about is available to listen to here - https://tinyurl.com/PCL005playlist
A late '70s interview with Rod Stewart, who talks trash about The Stones, Jeff Beck, The Faces and more, while dealing with the backlash of his glam years. It’s a funny, reflective and sometimes profane chat! We also talk to Alannah Myles in 1990 (“Black Velvet” and “Love Is”). Christopher recalls his time with Alannah, as her boyfriend, her writing partner and her advocate. And he regales us with a couple of very funny Alannah moments. It doesn't get much better than this, folks. Coney Hatch frontman Carl Dixon comes back for his second episode, and who should turn up to sit in but our pal Canadian broadcasting icon Ron MacLean! All this, and we wrap up with a Tom Petty group singalong with Carl on guitar. You don't want to miss this. You know what summer means here in Chickentown. Yes, it's time for our seventh (!) annual robot-themed Top 4 1/2 List. And this year's subject is... GIANT ROBOTS. We have giant robots from 1960s cartoons, 1970s television, 1980s concert tours, and more. (A certain Iron Giant may even appear on the list more than once.) Of course the greatest giant robots are from Japan... and while we skip over many of the classic Japanese robots, we do include one of the weirder examples. Look, we love robots. And when the robots rise up and conquer the puny humans (probably in about three weeks), we hope they recall our annual tribute fondly. Especially the giant robots. Also: National Bowling Day, AT-AT walkers invading Boston, Alannah Myles vs. Alana Davis, and Kornflake's movie plans for the year 2032. We will all be giant robots by then, of course.

"Black Velvet" ist die Hommage an Elvis Presleys samtige Stimme. Alannah Myles hat den Hit im Sommer 1989 in Toronto aufgenommen - unter ungewöhnlichen Bedingungen.
Alannah Myles struck gold in 1989 when her gigantic hit "Black Velvet" reached #1 in the US. The song won her a Grammy for Best Female Rock Performance and achieved radio spins of over 5 million. It should have been smooth sailing from here, yet it wasn't. While she's mum on some of the details to protect the living, it's clear from her story that she has not had an easy road in the music business. In the wake of shining a light on abusive men in power like Harvey Weinstein and Donald Trump, you can imagine the kinds of things she may have been subjected to. Basically, this interview has to be heard to be believed. http://alannahmyles.com/
Today's Guest: Christopher Ward, Canada’s first MuchMusic VJ, author, Is This Live? Inside the Wild Early Years of MuchMusic: The Nation's Music Station Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with CHRISTOPHER WARD by clicking on the video player above! Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of Alannah Myles and Bryan Adams impersonators doing “The Safety Dance”… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! "Is This Live? Inside the Wild Early Years of MuchMusic: The Nation's Music Station" by Christopher Ward. Order your copy today by clicking on the book cover above! What I don’t know about the Canadian music video scene could fill a half an hour or more… as rock ‘n’ roll historian Christopher Ward is about to discover. Ward has published a charming new oral history of MuchMusic—a Canadian take on MTV for my clueless fellow Americans. The book—Is This Live? Inside the Wild Early Years of MuchMusic, The Nation’s Music Station—takes us behind-the-scenes at the creation of the video music network where the only rule was, “You can do anything you want on air, just don’t spend any money.” CHRISTOPHER WARD podcast excerpt: "Being live at MuchMusic was like improv comedy. People love to see you fail and figure out how you're going to get out of it." Canadian music stars of the 1980s who blew up around the world—thanks in no small part to MuchMusic—included Bryan Adams, Corey Hart and Loverboy. And it also made mostly local guitar heroes out of Platinum Blonde, Gowan, the Spoons and Glass Tiger. Unless you’re a native of the Great White North, you’re probably wondering what Ward’s connection to all this might be, right? Well, he was Canada’s first VJ, or video disc jockey. But unlike their American counterparts who precorded all of their patter between music videos, Ward and his cohorts worked live. Ward got his start as an entertainer as a member of Second City Touring Company, where he became friends with future SNL comedian Mike Myers and was Myers’ sidekick on the original “Wayne’s World” before Dana Carvey brought life to Garth. He has also written songs for Diana Ross, Wynona Judd, The Backstreet Boys and Alannah Myles, for whom he wrote the #1 hit, “Black Velvet.” CHRISTOPHER WARD podcast excerpt: "Mike Myers calls me the 'entertainment survivalist' because we would go on the road together and I was prepared. I would bring a sandwich and I would have cold beer stashed in the van. I was ready to cope. I took pity on him and brought extra sandwich, extra beer, and a splitter for the headphones. And we both loved The Clash." Christopher Ward was one of the first Much Music VJ's. His new book is called Is This Live? Inside the Wild Early Years of Much Music: The Nation's Music Station. There's a lot we forgot or don't know about the station's early years. Partly because not everyone had the channel for the first few years; it was not apart of the basic cable package until 1987. That led to some lean years budget wise. And this is where the genius of programming head John Martin came in: He hired creative types who knew how to fill a blank canvas. Enter Christopher Ward. You can learn a lot from the past. Being challenged by a budget can always be overcome by hiring creative people who can fill the space. Other things I learned: The first female VJ was Catherine McClanahan, (not Erica Ehm) that I once wrote to MuchMusic and complained, and how often Christopher's friend Mike Meyers would appear on the station. Christopher left for reasons that were all too obvious; writing and producing Alannah Myles' number one song in 1989, "Black Velvet". He told me about the joys of having a number one song on his resume.
Mike and Max discuss Donald Trump's US presidential election win, their lethargic mood, how Trump worked the system and the Obamas. Christopher Ward tells Mike about choosing to write "Is This Live?," Second City, "City Limits," MuchMusic's aesthetic, Alannah Myles, interviews with Pete Townshend, George Harrison and Elvis Costello, a bond with Mike Myers and the music industry today. For dessert, Shane describes a strange encounter at a softball banquet.
Mike chats with former MuchMusic Veejay Christopher Ward about his years on City Limits and MuchMusic, co-writing Black Velvet for Alannah Myles and his recent dive into the Much archives for Is This Live?.
We talk to Black Velvet rocker Alannah Myles about her emotional Grammy win, plus she reveals her next surprising musical move. And from homegrown stars to homegrown tomatoes. How loyal are you to yours. Plus, one doctor claims government is wrong when it comes to medicinal pot-vaping.
