On February 22, 2015, 22-year-old Asia Brown and her two-year-old son, Ashton, were reported missing to the Greensboro, North Carolina police. The following day, they were discovered in the trunk of Asia's car, which had been set on fire in a secluded area owned by the City. Due to the extent of the damage to Asia and Ashton's bodies, a cause of death couldn't be determined, however, investigators are positive they were murdered. It's been just over nine years since Asia and Ashton were killed, and investigators are still searching for the person responsible… Asia Brown was last seen at around 3:20 pm on February 20, 2015 at the AutoZone store on Randleman Road in Greensboro, North Carolina. Three days later, her recently purchased 2005 black Buick LaCrosse was found burned in a wooded area off Thurston Avenue, a service road near the bank of South Buffalo Creek. The death of the Chevrolet Volt was a quiet one. It came in early December amid news that General Motors was cutting 14,000 jobs, closing three assembly plants, and also ending production of the Chevy Cruze and Impala, the Buick LaCrosse, and the Cadillac CT6. It made sense: Sales have been slowing, Americans aren't buying compact cars or sedans anymore, and GM is repositioning itself for a future that includes both bigger vehicles and many more electrics.
If America's biggest automaker's crystal ball is working, the future of cars has way fewer cars. That's the thinking driving General Motors' major internal restructuring announcement, which came Monday. The company plans to stop producing many compact or sedan models, including the Chevrolet Cruze, Volt, and Impala, the Buick LaCrosse, and the Cadillac CT6. It will close at least three assembly plants that build those cars, in Youngstown, Ohio, Oshawa, Ontario, and Detroit.
Did AV Cause GM to Drop Sedans, Fire Workers, and Shutter Plants? Notwithstanding five years of strong profits and anticipatable fiery backlash, GM announced plans to cut almost 15,000 jobs in North America and to end production at five North American plants. GM intends to drop passenger-cars from its lineup, including the Chevy Cruze, the newly redesigned Cadillac CT6, the Impala, and the Buick LaCrosse. The Company’s press release cited a plan to invest the saved costs in electric and self-driving vehicles. The Company also shifted Dan Amman from its president to chief executive officer of GM Cruise. Host Zach Adams, litigator Jon Feczko and business lawyer Tod Northman assess the ramifications of GM’s actions with particular emphasis on autonomous vehicles. General Motors dropped a bomb on Monday, saying it will likely close three assembly plants including Detroit-Hamtramck in a pre-emptive move to cut costs and headcount ahead of an expected downturn. The moves mean the elimination of as many as 14,000 jobs — including 1,500 at Detroit-Hamtramck — and the elimination of slow-selling sedans like the Chevrolet Volt and Impala and the Buick LaCrosse. A transmission plant in Warren could also close. It's a particularly dubious cap to the saga of the Poletown plant, which rose during the 1980s after the two cities it straddles worked with GM to condemn and raze a working-class neighborhood of the same name. On today's episode, we speak with Hamtramck Mayor Karen Majewski, who tells us the closure leaves a city defined by the auto industry without any actual auto manufacturing. It also leaves Detroit without an open auto-assembly plant. In fact, here's Mayor Mike Duggan statement about it: "This morning I spoke to Mary Barra and she advised me for the first time of the situation at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant. The news is troubling. I have spoken to UAW President Gary Jones and the city's economic development team. They are working together to come up with a solution that works for GM and the employees. We all know there is strong demand for manufacturing space in Detroit and we are willing to work with GM to fill all the available manufacturing space at Poletown with either GM-related entities or other companies." You can also read the UAW's statement here. We also speak with auto analyst Michelle Krebs of Autotrader to learn about the business rationale behind the move. And finally, tech guru Nuri Gocay joins us to shed some light on where General Motors is actually adding jobs (hint: It ain't in Detroit). Thanks for checking out the Dude Drives Cars podcast! This week, Matthew the Car Guy covers his trip to Portland, Oregon where he drove the new 2017 Buick LaCrosse. The tri-shield brand has history of building quiet sedans, with the occassional foray in sportiness (Grand National, anyone?). Buick engineers and marketers told us they benchmarked the Lexus ES350 when developing the LaCrosse. Did they hit the mark? Let's find out. Also on the podcast, Matthew folded himself three different ways so he could squeeze in and enjoy the newest Mazda MX-5 Miata for a few days. And what's this? NASCAR's talking about cracking down on celebratory burnouts? The Result of Care: Part OneNo matter the vocation it's a struggle to achieve quality or to be the best. Well, imagine trying to define it. Some write complex tomes containing various recipes which is fine for a Debate Team but hardly applicable to everyday life. Others like philosopher Robert Pirsig take a sleeker, more modern day approach. He believes the best or highest quality can be defined simply as producing whatever by "the result of care."So if philosophers, lit experts and big thinkers battle over meanings, how does one come up with a standard that means "the best?" Well if you're the jurors of the North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards (NACTOY) you have a criteria you work from. Sure there are still disagreements, arguments and fights over who is "more right" but that's the beauty of the award: subjectivity to the max.And on this week's Autoline John McElroy and his panel discuss those fantastic sparks inside, outside and around the vehicle that made them go WOW! Joining John to discuss the finalists for Car of the Year are fellow jurors Jim McCraw from NewCarTestDrive.com and Jeff Gilbert of WWJ Newsradio 950 -- CBS Detroit.

If you do your part to forget about your (grand)father's Buick, we'll do ours to refrain from picking the low-hanging fruit when it comes to smart remarks in this comparison test of the 2010 Buick LaCrosse CXS and the 2009 Lexus ES 350. There will be no references to forgotten left-turn signals or Murder She Wrote. Instead we'll ensure our focus remains on how well each car fulfills its promise of entry-level luxury. 2010 Buick LaCrosse vs. 2009 Lexus ES 350 Comparison Test:http://www.insideline.com/lexus/es-350/2009/2010-buick-lacrosse-vs-2009-lexus-es-350-comparison-test-and-video.html
We once had one of those bosses who would, for the smallest oversight or infraction, growl, stiff-spined and red-faced, "No, no, no, [expletive deleted] no!" Pretty much all of you responded the same way after discovering our test-track results for the 2010 Buick LaCrosse CXL with its direct-injection 3.0-liter V6. Come on, guys, you've got it all wrong. A 2-ton Buick powered by a 255-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 that gets to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds (8.1 seconds with 1 foot of rollout like at a drag strip) is not a car that General Motors needs to make apologies for. But OK, you're in full denial mode about the 2010 Buick LaCrosse. We've given you all the recognizable markers to compare cars when they're speeding along at their dynamic limits, but we haven't been able to program our satellite-based VBOX testing equipment to judge how serenely a luxury vehicle glides to a halt.
