We also unpack the surge of affordable EV leases under $400 a month and the impact of the expanded UAW strike on GM and Stellantis.Not long after GM announced their Q3 earnings the UAW has initiated a strike at General Motors' high-profit SUV plant in Texas, impacting the production of key models and deepening the financial blow to the Detroit 35,000 workers at GM's Arlington Assembly in Texas were ordered to strike by UAW President Shawn Fain. This plant manufactures the Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade.UAW President Shawn Fain said "Another record quarter, another record year. As we've said for months, record profits equal record contracts. It's time GM workers, and the whole working class, get their fair share."GM responded by expressing disappointment in the UAW's decision, highlighting that they had increased their previous proposal's value to the union by 25% just last week.The UAW's strike expansion also affected Stellantis' profitable Sterling Heights Assembly in Michigan yesterday, which produces Ram 1500 pickups.A proposed bill in Colorado seeks to introduce a “vulnerable road user protection registration fee” for heavier vehicles, with the intent to funnel the revenue into pedestrian and bike safety projects.The fee aims to generate around $20 million annually. However, even a 9,000-lb vehicle like the Hummer EV would only be subjected to an extra fee of $29.90 each year. The fee will only be charged Colorado's 12 most populated counties, where most pedestrian and bicycle accidents occur.State Senator Lisa Cutter said that “Data shows us that higher vehicle weights directly correlate with vulnerable road user deaths. It just makes sense to tie funding to that."Electric vehicles won't be exemptrom the registration fee.In 2024, Washington D.C. will raise registration fees based on weight: from $155 to $500 for over 6k lbs, from $155 to $250 for over 5k lbs, and from $115 to $175 for 3500-5k lbsA range of automakers are now offering electric vehicle leases for under $400 a month, making EVs more accessible to the average consumer and ramping up competition in the market.Multiple automakers including Nissan, Hyundai, and Kia are offering leases for electric vehicles like the 2023 Nissan LEAF, Hyundai Ioniq 6, and Kia Niro EV for under $400 per month.Some buyers are utilizing a "1-day lease" The lease tax "loophole" allows all vehicles to access benefits, irrespective of the $7,500 IRA tax credit income eligibility. Långteststallets yngsta biltestare undersöker barnsäkerheten i Kia Niro EV, Mazda CX-60, Mercedes-Benz T-klass, Skoda Fabia och Toyota Corolla Cross. Die aktuellen Automobilkurznachrichten mit Michael Weyland   Thema heute:    Die Fahrweise entscheidet: Effizientes Stromern in der Stadt, auf der Autobahn und über Land   Am Verbrauch zu sparen ist nicht nur Thema bei Fahrzeugen mit Verbrennungsmotor, sondern auch bei Elektroautos. Durch eine effiziente Fahrweise lässt sich Strom sparen. Am Beispiel des Kia Niro EV, der für Mitglieder des Clubs via Leasing auf der Plattform ADAC Fahrzeugwelt verfügbar ist, wurde effizientes Fahren in der Praxis erprobt. Laut einer Studie der ADAC SE beträgt der durchschnittliche Reichweitenwunsch derjenigen, die sich ein E-Auto anschaffen wollen, 440 Kilometer bei vollgeladener Batterie. Kia gibt für den Niro EV die WLTP-Normreichweite von 460 Kilometern an.   In städtischen Verkehrsszenarien Die Herstellerangaben (WLTP) sind im realen Fahrbetrieb über alle Verkehrswege hinweg (Autobahn, Landstraße, Stadt) in der Regel kaum zu erreichen. Aber: Insbesondere im Stadtverkehr kann die WLTP-Reichweite nicht nur erlangt, sondern sogar übertroffen werden. Städtische Verkehrsszenarien erfordern jedoch eine besondere Fahrweise, um die Reichweite des Elektrofahrzeugs zu optimieren. So hilft etwa eine behutsame Beschleunigung, den Energieverbrauch zu reduzieren. Gerade im Stop-and-Go-Verkehr ist vorausschauendes Fahren von Vorteil. Durch rechtzeitiges Ausrollen des Fahrzeugs wird die Bewegungsenergie genutzt und Antriebsenergie eingespart. Im Stadtverkehr zahlt sich außerdem die Rekuperation besonders aus. Beim Heranfahren an Ampeln oder im stockenden Verkehr wird kinetische in elektrische Energie umgewandelt, um die Batterie aufzuladen. Wenn der Fahrer mit seinem E-Auto gut vertraut ist, gehört die Nutzung verschiedener Rekuperationsstufen zur individuellen Fahrweise. Der Kia Niro EV beispielsweise hat vier, wählbar über Paddles am Lenkrad.   „Mitschwimmen“ auf der Autobahn   Effizientes und vorausschauendes Fahren trägt auch auf der Autobahn zur Maximierung der Reichweite bei. „Mitschwimmen“ im Verkehrsfluss bedeutet eine Anpassung an die Geschwindigkeit der anderen Verkehrsteilnehmer, und zwar so, dass nicht viele Überhol- oder Bremsmanöver nötig sind. Der Tempomat hilft, eine konstante Geschwindigkeit zu halten und so den Energieverbrauch zu kontrollieren. Auch das sogenannte „Segeln“ kann Energienutzen bringen: Ähnlich wie beim Auskuppeln bei einem Verbrennungsmotor rollt das Fahrzeug und schont so den Stromvorrat. Was auf der Autobahn weniger rekuperiert wird, kann in vielen Fällen weiter gerollt werden. Marking a whopping $95 Billion Dollar valuationVinFast's stock was prominently featured on Stocktwits' "Trending" list on Tuesday, indicating heightened interest from individual investors.A new study reveals a potentially surprising hero in the affordability challenge: EV leasing.New research from Energy Innovation shows drivers can save over $400 monthly compared to traditional vehicles, thanks to government incentives and reduced fueling and maintenance costs. For instance, leasing a Tesla Model Y is around $425 cheaper per month than leasing a gasoline-fueled BMW X4. Similarly, leasing a Kia Niro EV saves about $367 per month compared to its gasoline version.The $7500 IRA tax credit is the major contributor to lower payments and taxes paidEven when the tax credit becomes unavailable in the future, leasing an EV is projected to remain a cost-effective choice. Kia has expanded its electrical lineup in Malaysia with the recent launch of the Kia Niro EV. This will be Kia's second all-electric release since the launch of the Kia EV6 last year. Overall, the Kia Niro EV does tick some of the boxes based on design, specs, and features, however, the price for it is quite a drawback. Is it overpriced? I det norska räckviddstestet ElPrix kör man elbilar tills batteriet tar slut och bilen stannar. Vi deltog i årets evenemang bakom ratten i en Kia Niro EV och träffade en sköldpadda. David and Jo Lau discuss the five phases of customer experience with their 2022 Kia Niro EV  (Encounter, Decision, Purchase, Initial use, and Longitudinal use). Vehicle purchases are often a negotiation of two or more people's preferences and needs in domestic situations, and we are delighted to have talked with the Lau family about their customer journey. The human-machine interfaces (HMI) in the cockpit are the simple and effective designs we're used to seeing from Hyundai-Kia vehicles, and Tim was most impressed with the EV charging indicators on top of the dashboard that face through the windshield: three aqua blue lights convey charge status at a glance, without anyone having to pull out a smart phone. The driving features a tight suspension with enough torque to avoid trouble on the highways. David and Jo share their cost per mile with us as well, which is pleasantly low at current electric rates in their town. Range anxiety is a very real thing but for shorter distances, a BEV is suiting them fine. The Laus are quite pleased with all customer experience phases except Purchase. The all-new 2023 Kia Niro EV we just tested is the value-priced portion the brand's global effort to become a big-time competitor to Tesla Motors and the world other important electric-vehicle makers. The Kia EV6 is Kia's flagship battery-electric offering, but the Niro EV deserves headlines as the “affordable” entrant in the market. Within a few years, Kia hopes that the majority of its sales will come from battery-electric vehicles. The all-new 2023 Niro EV we tested is the second-generation Niro battery electric, part of a trio of brand-new Niros that also includes a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. Kia product planner Mark Savino told Host Jack Nerad Kia expects the Niro EV will grab about a quarter of the model's total sales when production is normalized. Expected to be priced at less than $40,000, the Niro EV will be available in Kia dealers in all 50 states. With its single 201-horsepower permanent magnet synchronous electric motor, the Niro offers 188 lb-ft of torque and a 113 MPGe fuel-economy equivalent. According to Kia, range of a full charge for the 2023 Niro EV is 253 miles. When connected to a DC fast charger, the Niro EV can take on an 80 percent charge in less than 45 minutes, excellent charging performance. For those interested in more conventional performance, Co-Host Chris Teague tests the all-new 2023 Acura Integra this week. The name itself is a headline. In years past the Acura Integra was one of the brand's most popular and evocative models. But it was discontinued as Acura pursued an alphabetic naming scheme for its vehicles. Now it is back, and it offers some of the best pieces from the Honda-Acura parts bin. Drawing heavily on the basics of the North American Car of the Year Honda Civic, it features the Civic Si's turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which can be backed by a CVT (Boo) or a 6-speed manual transmission (Yay!) With 200 horsepower on tap, the new Integra promised to be an exciting platform to wind through the fall colors of New England in October. And Teague will tell us all about it. Our interview guest this week is Jeep Vice President of Product Marketing Tavon Brooks. The occasion for the interview was the introduction and press drive of the new long-wheelbase Grand Wagoneer L and Wagoneerr L. It took place in and around Bozeman, Montana, right at the gates of Yellowstone. In the news, car prices are leveling off, but new problems are on the horizon for car buyers, and we'll detail them for you. And Hyundai has announced a big, bold plan to offer the public “software-defined vehicles.” We'll tell you what that means and discuss how it could affect you in the future. It's Monday 9th May, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. GERMANY'S PLUGIN EV SHARE UP TO 24.3% Germany, Europe's largest auto market, saw plugin electric vehicles take 24.3% share in April 2022, up from 22.1% YoY. Overall auto volume was down, by over 21% YoY, and over 40% compared to pre-pandemic seasonal norms. April's combined plugin result comprised 12.3% battery electrics (BEVs), and 12.0% plugin hybrids (PHEVs).  Combustion-only powertrains faired worst in terms of volume drop, with diesel sales down almost 30% YoY, and petrol down almost 28%. With current BEV market leader Tesla not having any large scheduled deliveries in April, other marques and models had a chance to shine, with the Fiat 500e coming out on top. The Mercedes EQB stepped up in registered volume by some 5× over the period, seeing a healthy 1,405 units over the February to April period, from 295 previously. The BMW i4 increased 2.7× to 755 units.
