The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth is best described as... Porsche-great. This week we're doing a deep dive into Ford's funky sedan of the 1980s: the Sierra, together with its American identical cousin, the Merkur XR4Ti. In the early 1980s, Ford of Europe (and chairman Bob Lutz) was on a mission to get a piece of the export pie that was dominated by Mercedes, BMW, and Audi. The car they conjured up to do so, the Sierra, was a massive success in Europe. When it eventually made it to the U.S., badged as a Merkur XR4Ti, Lutz's plan to sell the cars to yuppies via independent niche dealers was foiled, and the car was placed on Lincoln-Mercury dealer lots alongside big American barges and clueless salesmen, only to die a slow death. Meanwhile, on the other side of the pond, the extra-spicy Ford Sierra RS Cosworth was born. In fact, the car was so sought-after (i.e. stolen) by British hooligans that insurance companies refused to cover them. And it was so fast it was repeatedly banned from racing, eventually effectively spelling the end for Group A racing. Ford of Europe (headed up by Bob Lutz) was seeing the likes of BMW and Audi making a killing with their U.S. exports and Ford wanted in. The plan was to try something different, and rather than a Ford-branded import program where Sierras would be sold alongside LTDs, Cougars and other giant American sedans, Bob wanted to do a Ford of Europe export scheme where their new car could be sold alongside other European curios like Saabs and Volvos at independent dealers under a new brand name. They settled on Merkur (the German word for mercury – pronounced “maercoor”), but they also needed a new model name as Sierra was trademarked by Oldsmobile (think: Cutlass Ciera.) Ford used the “XR” prefix to denote a variety of upgraded model trims followed by a number which corresponded to the vehicle size – which is where XR4 comes from. Add abbreviations for “turbo” and “injection” and you're off to the races! Both the Merkur and Sierra RS Cosworth were powered by versions of Ford's Pinto 4-cylinder motor. The Merkur engine could also be found in the USDM Mercury Cougar XR7, Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, and Mustang SVO. Across the pond however, the Sierra engine went to Cosworth to get an aluminum head with an extra cam. The results were clear: the XR4Ti's motor needed 13 lbs of boost to pump out 175 hp, while the Cosworth version only needed 8 psi to make 200 hp. But the Cosworth got a whole host of additional modifications beyond the engine, and the resulting package was so exceptional it wound up getting banned from racing repeatedly, until eventually the regs shut down the entire series. The chassis is so exceptional that Jason proclaims it the best sedan chassis he's ever experienced – on the same level as a Porsche Cayman GT4. Transcendent. A 9.9/10. Where "Beatrice," his extensively modified E30, only managed a mid-8 (for the same reasons that caused Sreten at M539 Restoration to drive his into a tree). The likes of the Lotus Carlton didn't even garner a 5 from either Carmudgeon. Honorable mentions go to the Maserati Quattroporte, C126 560SEC, and a handful of M products. We'll even dive into every generation of M5 – E28 through G90. Lastly, we'll learn about 80s and 90s Lexus dealership brutalism, that “light” means window, our friend Mike's transient collection of eclectic cars has graced the show at least 3 times (thanks, Mike!), superbly compliant AWD cars like the Delta Integrale and Subaru WRX are good but rarely fun, and Bob Lutz had to fight tooth and nail to get a Chevrolet dealership in NorCal to sell him a Corvair Monza. The Genesis G90 helped spin off the fledgling Genesis brand from its Hyundai starting place. Pivoting away from the Genesis Coupe of yore, the Genesis G90 helped push the Genesis brand into a hotly contested, and loyal, luxury sedan space. A space dominated by the likes of Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and more. After helping establish the brand, Genesis launched the second generation of its G90 in 2021. The transition to its second generation added needed tech upgrades and helped the brand's flagship sedan better fall in line with the current design language. While the V8 didn't make the transition to the second generation, the G90 offers a pair of turbocharged V6 mills, with the e-supercharged variant boasting 409 hp. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Genesis G90 and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the '24 G90 and highlights some of his favorite features. Later, Wren takes you along for a live drive review of the large Genesis sedan. Adding to these segments, Wren chats with Autoweek's Patrick Carone about Genesis, the G90, and the luxury sedan space. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes the '24 Genesis G90 special.
Genesis rolled out its G70 sedan onto the road all the way back in 2017, for the 2018 model year. While the G90 helped kick the Genesis brand off, the G70's launch was a big part of the brand's expansion down market. This smaller sedan fights with the likes of luxury heavyweights like the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and more. This Genesis also shared a platform with Kia's Stinger, which went out of production after 2023. Genesis gave the G70 a substantial styling update in 2022 to bring it in line with the rest of the Genesis portfolio, but also added a more powerful 2.5-liter turbocharged I4 as the base powertrain, which replaces the outgoing 2.0-liter mill. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Genesis G70 and puts it through its paces. Wren guides you around the G70 highlights some of his favorite features, and explains what this Genesis sedan feels like in the real world. Later in the show, Wren takes you along for a live drive review. Joining these segments, Autoweek's Patrick Carone joins the show to discuss his experiences with the G70, the competitive set, and more. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes the G70 special.

The Genesis brand spun off from the Genesis models that were originally part of Hyundai's lineup. Kicking the brand off, the company launched the G90 -- a full-size luxury sedan that was aimed at undercutting the competition while still giving customers the feeling of opulence. Genesis first showed this flagship sedan in 2017 -- a time before the sedan lost its foothold. Despite crossovers and SUVs taking more and more market share from the sedan, Genesis saw enough value in its G90 to give it a second generation, and stick with a sedan. The second-generation G90 does ditch the 5.0-liter V8, with only a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 underhood. The folks at Genesis tossed on an electronic supercharger for its top model, which sends 409 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2023 Genesis G90 and puts it through its paces. Wren guides you through the G90's new features and highlights his favorite additions to the G90. Wren also takes you along for a live drive review of the Genesis G90 and discusses how it feels dynamically. Adding to the show, Wren chats with Patrick Carone about the Genesis G90 over the years, the best features of the new model and where it stands in the pantheon of luxury cars. Closing the show, the two breakdown what makes this new G90 special.

The Genesis G80 sits in the middle of the Genesis sedan lineup: below its top-rung G90 and above the sporty G70. Even though sedans aren't as popular as the increasingly-in-demand crossover and SUV segments, Genesis gave its G80 a second generation in 2020. This second-gen G80 updates the car's styling to the current Genesis design language and streamlined the engine options. The G80, in the US, sports either a 2.5-liter turbocharged I4 or a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6. Both engines feed a standard eight-speed automatic. Volkswagen might be thinning its sedan herd, but it's not bowing out completely. Volkswagen's Arteon is the company's flagship sedan, and lives up to the task. Blending the current VW design language with a sleek sedan body, the Arteon looks like the rest of the VW lineup while still etching out its own distinct style. Powering the Arteon is exclusively a 300 hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged I4, which feeds a seven-speed automatic transmission. The Arteon might not have the same luxury cache as, say, an Audi, but the sleek Arteon is far from basic. On this bonus episode of Quick Spin, Natalie Neff talks with Wesley Wren about her time with these two stylish sedans. The two discuss the features of each car and chat about each car's space in the world. Expanding on these cars, the two dissect the shrinking sedan segment and talk about dire future for sedans.

Homesteading Homesteading has been growing in popularity in the US over the last several years. But what is homesteading? One definition says it is “a lifestyle of agrarian self-sufficiency as practiced by a modern homesteader or urban homesteader.” We invited Jason from Cog Hill to talk about his homestead and a little bit about the different types there are. Garden Update Cog Hill: Jason has never been able to grow sweet onions and bell peppers; while it's always been a struggle for him in the past, this year he has great success. Normally most people will cut up their potatoes before planting them, not Jason, he planted the whole potato (Red Norland), and even with all of the rain this season and planting later than he normally does, he had a big potato harvest. Greg: Along with Jason, Greg planted his potatoes later this year due to all the rain but had the best potato harvest he has ever had and he is still not sure how or why. We have our G90 sweet corn that will be ready to harvest in the next couple of weeks, we are excited about that. Our Purple Boy and Lemon Boy tomatoes are both new varieties to us but we love the taste of these. Both of these varieties would make a great Market Tomato with great flavor. What is Homesteading? While everyone has their own opinions or ideas on homesteading, more than likely you will agree with Jason. “Farming is for profit, while Homesteading is for yourself, family and friends. You have to depend on yourself for everything like food, meat, and being sustainable.” Although some homesteads can gain profit from selling their harvest or meat, most just want to be able to grow their own food. Jason and his family raised meat chickens for 5 years, along with quail, rabbits, and ducks. Bring completely sustainable can be very hard to do and accomplish. You have to make things work for you. Everyone has different land and soil which plays a lot into starting a homestead. “Adaption is key” in homesteading. Many years ago, most people would think of homesteading as having to live off your land because you were considered less fortunate or poor but in reality, it was because most people enjoyed doing it. If you get a chance to watch Cog Hill's YouTube channel, you truly get a sense that Jason and his family are enjoying life on the homestead. “If we didn't love it, we wouldn't do it” Jason states. Advice: Starting a homestead can be very stressful but the number one piece of advice Jason shares to Greg is that you should go slow! Starting out it can become very overwhelming. He also recommends that you shouldn't get caught up in “fads”, if you see one homesteader out there and they are very popular, don't think that that is the way it should be done. You have to be yourself because every situation is different and there may be so many others out there just like you. You have to figure out what works best for you. There are many things you can't depend on others to tell you when starting a homestead, growing your own food is very subjective. Your soil issues may not be someone else's soil issues which would make your watering routines different and then in turn would make your fertilization regimen different. Principles to Follow: Do your research!! Planting onions for warmer zones is completely different for the cooler climates. The time of year, what type of onion to plant and when to fertilize all play a HUGE factor in being successful. Be Flexible! If something doesn't work, change it! If you fail at something, try again! Just don't give up! Crops for Beginners: Summer Gardens Summer squash would most likely be the easiest to start, you can direct seed them and not have to start them in seed trays. Most squash varieties are pretty disease resistant, the summer squash varieties have quick maturity dates and you can continue to plant them throughout the summer months. While tomatoes are the most popular crop to grow,
Things to Consider When Growing Corn Before deciding whether to plant corn in the garden, there are a few important isolation requirements you need to follow in order to avoid cross-pollination of sweet corn. If you do not want cross-pollination of sweet corn you should either plant a synergistic variety or stagger your plantings 2 to 3 weeks in your garden. You should also consider whether you have time to process and harvest the corn once it's ready. If you don't have time to process and put away some of the standard varieties all in one day, you should probably consider growing some of the sweeter varieties that leave you a 10 to 15-day window to put up on the homestead. Another important factor to consider is whether this is your first time growing corn. If it is your first time growing corn, we recommend growing a standard variety such as G90, Jubilee, or Silver Queen. We recommend a standard variety due to the longer growing period which allows you more time to apply plenty of fertilizer and water. Growing Corn in the Vegetable Garden The key factor when growing corn is to plant corn in a square plot with at least three rows side-by-side. If you are growing in a raised bed you can still plant corn just try and squeeze in three rows if you can. The major reason why we plant corn in square plots is that corn is wind-pollinated therefore in order to get full ears of kernel those tassels need to side-by-side. The ideal pH for growing corn is between 5.8 - 6.5, however, if you get above 7 you may run into some trouble in the garden. For older corn varieties, you can get them germinating at 55 degrees. However, for the sweeter varieties, the soil temperature should be around 60 degrees. As far as, row spacing we recommend spacing them between 30 to 36 inches. While seed spacing is a little different based on whether you are planting sweet or field corn. We suggest planting sweet corn seeds around 6 to 8 inches apart on drip tape in the vegetable garden. While field corn seeds should be planted anywhere between 8 to 12 inches apart. Since corn is a heavy feeder, drip irrigation is more effective and way easier to supply the plants with the needed amount of water directly at the plant roots. Fertilizing Schedule for Corn When fertilizing corn, Nitrogen is the key component to accomplishing great success when growing corn in the vegetable garden. The standard corn recommendation is five pounds of Nitrogen per 1,000 square feet or 300-row feet. Once corn plants reach 6 to 8 inches tall, we suggest using our Fertilizer Injector to apply 2 lbs of 20-20-20 and 1 cup of Micro-Boost per 1,000 square feet. Then, once they reach 12 to 18" tall at our first hilling we apply 10 lbs of Chilean Nitrate. Next, we will side dress again with Chilean Nitrate once the corn reaches around "hiney high" which will also be our last cultivation. When the corn reaches around "titty high" we will inject 4 lbs of 20-20-20 and 1 cup of Micro-Boost per 1,000 square feet. The last time we fertilize is when plants start tasseling and we give them another 4 lbs of 20-20-20 and 1 cup of Micro-Boost to top them off in the garden. So in total if you have a 1,000 square plot of corn with no nutrients in your soil already you will need a bag of 20-20-20, one quart of Micro-Boost, and 2 bags of Chilean Nitrate. The most common pest problem when growing corn is earworms. The best pest control product to use when dealing with earworms is to use Spinosad and apply it on the silks. Show and Tell Segment On the show and tell segment this week, Greg and Travis talk a little bit about the weather conditions that have caused several issues for gardeners this year so far. The guys also show off a new product which is our Hoss Germination Mats that are offered in 3 different sizes. Travis goes over some new pumpkin and sunflower varieties that are now available on the website. The two new heirloom pumpkin varieties are both giant or larger type pum...

With the end of one year and the beginning of another, it's always a good time to look back at what happened in the automotive world in the past 12 months and pick cars of the year. It was an ideal time to be part of an industry in 2018. Alternative fuels, ride-sharing platforms, alternative fuel, and the increasing interest in vintage cars and trucks. It was a whirlwind year. The Genesis G80 and G90 are among TheWeeklyDriver.com's Cars of the Year. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia recap the year in Episode #67 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. We focus on the top-10 cars of the year I selected as editor and publisher of www.theweeklydriver.com. Most industry publications and organizations select vehicles of the year in the preceding calendar year. At the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, the 2019 Genesis G70 received several car-of-the-year awards. Genesis is deserving of praise, but its accolades follow the long-time practice of honoring cars too early. We discuss the best cars of the year at the end of the year. It seems more logical to have time to consider all vehicles and add perspective to the selections. My selections for 2018 were chosen from estimated 40 cars and trucks I reviewed in 2018.
