Casey Williams & Rhys Williams amplify the value of friction & rethink the promises of technology

Casey Williams is a Lecturer in the Center for Environmental Studies at Rice University. His research examines the social and cultural dimensions of climate change and energy transition, especially the problem of “climate impasse” and the concept and possibility of a “just transition.” His writing on climate, energy and labor has appeared in The New York Times, The LA Review of Books, Radical Philosophy, Jacobin, Dissent, and elsewhere. Rhys Williams is a Lecturer at University of Glasgow who works on the intersection between fantasy, narrative and energy. His work also looks to get a better grasp on the relationship between ecology and infrastructure. He's a member of the Petrocultures Research Group and the After Oil Collective. He also organizes the Energy and Ecology Group in Glasgow. Right now a lot of his focus is on energy, infrastructure, food, and water. You can read some of that work in Open Library of Humanities and South Atlantic Quarterly.  I think one of the most important takeaways for me in this conversation was this idea that we need to leave more space for real deliberation in our politics, and that this actually means that we need to accept the fact of friction. It doesn't sound like a big deal, but what we call, in this conversation, “frictionful engagements” aren't really the norm in political communication. What we tend to get is a situation where frictionlessness is tacitly preferred, and so, in Casey's words, “Capital quietly takes the reins” and we're left with mechanisms that are meant to do all the heavy lifting in political decision-making. Rhys and Casey see ways that these mechanisms, especially financial mechanisms in the climate debate, really function like a narrative technique – it's the mechanism that has the agency, not us, and this is the narrative we've been largely sold: a kind of politics-without-politics. One of the other big things that I'd underline is Casey's challenge to those that engage with the climate crisis and who are worried about communicating the risks: he says that there is actually a real political risk involved in treating specific disasters as “metonymic representatives of the climate crisis as a whole.” When we bundle a highly localized disaster into an accumulation of disasters that tell us a story about the agglomeration of impacts and the climate emergency as a whole, Casey says we risk effacing the specificity of the struggles occurring at the local level: struggles not just against the impacts of a transforming climate, but also struggles for social and economic autonomy against global capitalism. I hadn't thought about it that way before and that sense of being responsible to the specificity of place is something I've definitely taken with me from this conversation. There's a few other things I'd mention: we talk about the “degrowth imaginary” and questions of the scale at which infrastructure ceases to be life-giving. We talk a lot about technology as a thing that gets privileged in science fiction and in popular discourse as a “driver of historical change.” There's quite a bit of discussion here about the social layers that get subsumed under technology as it gets fetishized in this way. Overall, too, there's a concern here with how we have been slowly abstracted from nature as such. How we've sealed ourselves off from it by instrumentalizing all the life around us, or as much of it as we can control and colonize and commodify. So, in the face of the real need to address the crisis of a destabilized climate system, they talk about what we should include in the discussion that too quickly gets displaced.

Entrepreneurs frequently explain how they came up with a business idea to solve some sort of problem they personally experienced. This "necessity is the mother of invention" incentive is also true in the world of non-profits and purpose-driven businesses more concerned about making a difference than making a profit. Often it is during the worst of times - crises, hardships, or conflagrations and controversies - that people see opportunities to help those most in need. Or, on a grander scale, to dismantle systems of oppression and come together in new ways to make things better. Take, for example, Casey Phillips of The Walls Project.  We've talked about The walls Project previously on Out to Lunch. In this conversation, Casey expounds on a specific initiative that has the potential to address Baton Rouge's systemic problems in new ways. It's called OneRouge, a partnership between The Walls Project, which works to break down the societal walls in our community, and MetroMorphosis, Reverend Raymond Jetson's nonprofit organization that seeks to transform urban communities from within. The OneRouge Coalition was created in 2021 and has brought together 400 organizations in the community to address the economic and social disparities in Baton Rouge through a systematic framework that has identified the nine drivers of poverty and created coalitions to tackle each one by breaking down its component parts and working together – what's known in the nonprofit world as collective impact -- to address it. Casey is a music industry entrepreneur who spent more than a decade away from Baton Rouge, before moving back in 2011 to found The Walls Project.     Amber Elworth is owner of Light House Coffee, a coffee shop with the unique mission of supporting migrants by providing them with opportunities for employment, a space to sell handcrafted items they have made and just a safe space where they are welcomed and included. Amber and her husband founded the shop in 2017. At the time, Amber was working at Catholic Charities in Baton Rouge as a social worker in its immigration and refugee services division. She got to know a lot of the migrants coming into the community and recognized the need for a place like Light House. Today, the coffee shop has grown in popularity, expanded its menu to lunch and dinner, and secured a liquor license to serve beer and wine. As a middle class average working person, it's easy to live in Baton Rouge and think that our most urgent problem is traffic. It's more difficult to be aware of the issues that trouble the people in the cars and buses clogging our city streets or living alongside them. It's encouraging to learn from Casey Williams and Amber Elworth all that they're doing to improve Baton Rouge for all of us. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard. Casey Williams (l) & James Claus (r) James Claus, co-owner and brewmaster of 3 Disciples Brewing is here, and so is Casey Williams of Barrel Proof Comedy, to join Harry Duke and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha today. Casey Williams has been doing comedy shows at 3 Disciples and still does shows at Barrel Proof Comedy. He spent fifteen years in the carting business and was doing comedy shows on the side. "Beer is our religion." 3 Disciples Brewing is located in Santa Rosa (next to the Tipsy Taco). They celebrate their fifth anniversary next year. Matt, Luke and James are the three disciples and their mottos is, “Beer is our religion.” Sally Tomatoes is still an event center, even if the restaurant is closed. James describes how they turned their location into one of the best music and comedy venues in Sonoma County. They moved brewing operations from Sebastopol to Santa Rosa about a year and a half ago. It is a great space and they are working on getting their operation moved to 1018 Santa Rosa Plaza for the last year. It is the old Two Tread location and came with equipment. As of Jan. 1 they will be moved in entirely. James is very happy with the new venue. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more info. There is big Brews News today, which they describe as two doors opening. As 3 Disciples are leaving the old venue, Casey is taking it over. 501 Mendocino Ave. will now be called Barrel Proof, an entertainment venue for comedy and music. It is also a great location and Casey knows its potential. Barrel Proof will still sell 3 Disciples beer. They also have the Tipsy Taco next door and food trucks that come by. The new 3 Disciples location does have a kitchen. “I can promise you it will be great.” Barrel Proof has a goal of opening by the third week in January. Sebastopol Origins 3 Disciples started in Sebastopol seven years ago. Two years ago they moved into 501 Mendocino but they have outgrown it. Ron Sly does the artwork on the 3 Disciples cans. They have known Ron for a while, he used to be in the same home brew club. When Covid happened, breweries needed to distribute beer in cans, so they needed good art. James new Ron was perfect for that gig. Let There Be Light Pilsner, a German style beer, clean and light, with German hops. It's only 5% and it's a Pilsner. 3 Disciples started with three Belgian styles. Since the people like IPAs now, they had to make a lot of that. Visit our sponsor Victory House online for their latest viewing and menu options. They second beer is their new West Coast IPA, 3D IPA. 6.5% with Idaho 7 Centennial and Cascade hops. He gets lemon and pineapple flavors. The Cascade hops give citrus notes and the Centennial gives pineapple flavors. The next one is called Galaxy Invaders, a hazy IPA. It is primarily Galaxy hops from Australia, and the 2022 vintage. The hops are fresh from a month ago, where it's summer down under. The fourth beer is called Galaxy, Citra and Mosaic and features Galaxy invaders from outer space. Then there is a kettle sour called Fruity Kettles, made with apricot, peach, tangerine, vanilla and milk sugar.

She speaks on the health benefits of a solid financial foundation while establishing her accountancy practice. Casey worked in public accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, and tax before launching her own company. Before that, she worked as an implantation lead for a consulting firm, where she enjoyed advising clients on the advantages of implementing processes and procedures.Today, Casey shares her insights on getting in control of your company's finances will not only help you maximize deductions, but you'll also eliminate the stress and confusion that slows down your earning potential.Managing a firm properly[02:49]Casey has people in various places. They are the largest employer in their town with 15 employees in their bakery and have 7 employees in the accounting firm. She started the bakery and the accounting firm without a process or system. As her business grown and changed, procedures have changed. But you still have to have those processes in place for everybody and be on the same page. The primary process you should look at[05:24]Casey's biggest thing with the mechanic shop is building a good client base, and word of mouth amplified it. You should pick a specific niche that you want to work in and narrow that niche down. And the smaller the niche got, the better the business would be. More Clients[08:15]Most of her clients come from referrals, which has allowed them to be the go-to person for accounting. Getting referred is a testament to your ability to deliver results. Empowering Referrals[09:19]For the tax side, Casey only sees her clients once or twice a year. When they pick up their pocket that has a coupon, it gives her an opportunity to mention it with a client. Casey also mentions sometimes that she got a referral from someone. It's a subtle way to say she does take referrals.Supporting Clients[13:36]Taxes are usually your most significant expense in business, whether it's people or taxes. As an accountant, you have to look at where you can cut those costs, and it's not uncommon for accountants to talk about income streams. Advice for Hiring[15:38]Look more at the personality rather than just the skill set. How is this person going to interact with the rest of the team? Since Casey hires both remote and non-remote, she does a fair amount of journaling first to prepare herself until she gets to a point where she is now ready to hire.[16:49]Casey does mental work before putting out the job description of what she wants. Because then, she can tailor that job description to what she looks for more in a personality position than skill set.Conclusion[25:18]If you're looking to start a business, it's easier to outsource than hire an employee. You can control the hours that you hire them and manage that budget that goes into that.Discover how Casey Williams runs through the creative processes in her business and clients by visiting: https://www.caseylwilliams.com/Listen to Revenue Accelerator Podcast on:Apple | Acast Hosted on Acast.
