Here's the Ithaca Minute for December 13th. A teenager from Waverly died at the scene of a crash on West Danby Road in Newfield on Tuesday afternoon that left Route 34 closed for hours, and another teen, from Spencer, was airlifted to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries, according to a statement from the New York State Police. 17-year-old Peyton C. Shaw, was a passenger in a Toyota Yaris that rear-ended a Jeep Patriot that had “stopped for another vehicle that was in front of it making a turn” when both vehicles were being driven northbound on West Danby Road near Piper Road shortly before 1pm on Tuesday. The Waverly High School senior was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the State Police, after the Yaris hit the stopped Jeep, the vehicle “then went into on-coming traffic and was struck by a Cadillac CT6.” The driver of the Yaris, 18-year-old Dale T. Beeman of Spencer, was transported by Guthrie Air to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre “to be treated for serious injuries,” the police said. The drivers of the other two vehicles were evaluated by EMS at the scene. A flurry of highway closure alerts on Tuesday morning from the 511NY system, which sends text messages or e-mails to subscribers when roads in their area are closed, was due to a glitch, says the New York State Office of Information Technology Services. And a fire early Sunday morning in the kitchen and living room areas of a home on Black Oak Road in the Town of Enfield left "significant damage" to the structure and displaced a resident, according to the Enfield Volunteer Fire Company. Auto - Rund ums Auto.
The death of the Chevrolet Volt was a quiet one. It came in early December amid news that General Motors was cutting 14,000 jobs, closing three assembly plants, and also ending production of the Chevy Cruze and Impala, the Buick LaCrosse, and the Cadillac CT6. It made sense: Sales have been slowing, Americans aren't buying compact cars or sedans anymore, and GM is repositioning itself for a future that includes both bigger vehicles and many more electrics.
If America's biggest automaker's crystal ball is working, the future of cars has way fewer cars. That's the thinking driving General Motors' major internal restructuring announcement, which came Monday. The company plans to stop producing many compact or sedan models, including the Chevrolet Cruze, Volt, and Impala, the Buick LaCrosse, and the Cadillac CT6. It will close at least three assembly plants that build those cars, in Youngstown, Ohio, Oshawa, Ontario, and Detroit.
Did AV Cause GM to Drop Sedans, Fire Workers, and Shutter Plants? Notwithstanding five years of strong profits and anticipatable fiery backlash, GM announced plans to cut almost 15,000 jobs in North America and to end production at five North American plants. GM intends to drop passenger-cars from its lineup, including the Chevy Cruze, the newly redesigned Cadillac CT6, the Impala, and the Buick LaCrosse. The Company’s press release cited a plan to invest the saved costs in electric and self-driving vehicles. The Company also shifted Dan Amman from its president to chief executive officer of GM Cruise. Host Zach Adams, litigator Jon Feczko and business lawyer Tod Northman assess the ramifications of GM’s actions with particular emphasis on autonomous vehicles. In Episode 4, Dan and Sam talk about a pair of updated SUVs, the Nissan Rogue Hybrid and Mazda CX-9 before getting deep into why GM delayed the launch of SuperCruise on the Cadillac CT6. While SuperCruise will monitor the human operator to make sure they continue paying attention while not driving, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto provide means to keep the driver entertained. As much as we might want to use smartphone based infotainment, it's likely to be a dead-end technology.
