Salman Rushdie, author of more than 20 books, spoke with me in 2019 about his “Quichotte: A Novel,” a  contemporary story about chaotic political times that live on today.    He takes readers on a road journey across America in a Chevy Cruze.  Rushdie's road traveler, Quichotte, is a simple man who has watched too much television.     Perhaps because of that, it's an anything-can-happen sort of trip sprinkled with cyber-spies, opioids, science fiction, racism of course, all mixed in with heavy doses of family ties real or imagined.    Born in India, mostly educated in England, and a current long-time resident of New York City, Rushdie's published work includes novels, books of non-fiction, a memoir and children's books.

How crazy is it that Maria and I connected because we were roommates on a yacht when I traveled to Egypt over the summer!? Maria is a cardiac nurse and after dabbling in online health and fitness coaching, she started her wellness and travel blog! She loves helping women discover how to take care of themselves - in a loving way.But before we dive into the show... a quick lightening round of Q&A:1. Does your car have a name? Maria: I have a navy blue 2014 Chevy Cruze that I named "Kenny" after Kenny Chesney!2. What is the best kitchen gadget you own?Maria: I love making new recipes and I recently bought a grater and it's been amazing!3. When you die, what do you want to be remembered for?Maria: I want to be remembered as someone that helps others discover beauty in themselves and beauty in the world.OK, now let's dive in!One of the major topics we covered was self-love and what that actually means. Maria couldn't have described it better,... "Having a balance between self-compassion and sell discipline on your journey."   A big part of that is finding what you love and diving deep into WHY you love it - are you doing a certain workout because you want external validation or because you love the way it makes you feel? Maria recommends starting by asking yourself what will feel good for your body and trying new things as you go. It's that balance between masculine and feminine energy and knowing how to show up in each in a healthy way. Reevaluating your goals and determining what actually keeps you going will help. As a nurse, it can be difficult to create a sustainable routine but Maria recommends starting small and figuring out what works best for you while being open to shifting when needed. The key is to be intentional with what you are doing.  Self-love and putting yourself first is not selfish and it actually helps you show up better for others as well, but it might take some effort on your part. Remember, be more intentional with the thoughts you think about yourself and you'll start to see and feel more aligned in all areas of your life! This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Veterans Day, Friday, November 11.Temperatures fell off the side of a cliff last night and kept falling until they hit freezing. According to the National Weather Service it will be sunny with a high near 35 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area on Friday. On Friday night it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of around 25 degrees. It will be windy, so definitely wear that coat you were already thinking of wearing. Winds of 10 to 15 mph could gust more than 20 mph.For the second time this election week, state elections officials spent Thursday dealing with an error in Linn County as the statewide counting of Iowans' votes from Tuesday's election continues with another recount ordered. In addition to a recalculation of Linn County's vote totals due to an error in the reporting of its early vote counts, partial recounts also were conducted Thursday in Warren and Des Moines counties. The partial recounts were ordered by Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate after irregularities were discovered Tuesday night. In addition, on Thursday afternoon, Pate ordered an administrative recount of absentee ballots in Scott County. All election results in Iowa are considered unofficial until they are reviewed and certified by the state's canvassing board.Unofficial results in Linn County came Thursday only after a recalculation of the county's vote totals due to a second error made by the county auditor's office.According to the Secretary of State's office, Linn County reported 600 more absentee ballots than the office had actually received at the time the polls closed. The discrepancy was discovered by the Secretary of State's office, which then alerted the Linn County Auditor's Office.According to the Linn County Auditor's Office, a computer froze while the county's absentee ballot counts were being uploaded. The process was completed on a backup computer, but officials believe 600 ballots were inadvertently reported twice — once during the original attempt and again during the backup attempt. The Linn County Auditor's Office resolved the tabulation of the county's votes, and the posted results were corrected, the Secretary of State's office said. The Secretary of State's office took the opportunity to chide the county again for not following procedures it had laid out.A 16-year-old faces charges related to a shooting near Mount Mercy University and Regis Middle School last week that injured a Mount Mercy student and caused several schools to lock down.Natorian Nicholas Smith, of Cedar Rapids, faces several charges in connection to the shooting. The charges against Smith were filed Thursday, though he was already being held at the Linn County Juvenile Detention Center because of a probation violation related to the shooting, according to a Cedar Rapids police news release.Smith was reportedly involved in an exchange of gunfire just before 4 p.m. Nov. 3 near the intersection of K Avenue and Elmhurst Drive NE, police said.A Mount Mercy cross-country runner was on his way to practice and got caught in the crossfire. He was shot in his right forearm, a non-life threatening injury, according to the criminal complaint.Police collected video surveillance that showed an exchange of gunfire between three people in a silver Chevy Cruze and two people on foot. Investigators found more than 20 shell casings in the area and found a car, a house and a garage had each been struck by bullets, the news release said.A police K-9 led officers to 1300 Oakland Rd., a few blocks from the shooting, where they made contact with Smith. Brandon Isabelle has been charged in the murder of a 27-year-old woman and 2-day-old daughter. According to an affidavit from Memphis Police, on February 1 around 11 p.m. an officer was looking for possible stolen vehicles when they found a tan Chevy Cruze with the driver side window broken out. Officers ran the tag and found that the vehicle belonged to Danielle Hoyle. They contacted Hoyle's family who said they had not heard from her since she left the house earlier with her daughter. The report says while officers were making contact with the family a woman was found with a gunshot wound to the head off the road outside of the vehicle. The woman was identified as Hoyle. The 2-day-old child was not found on the scene. The report says that Isabelle later admitted to luring Hoyle to the area of Levi and Sedgwick and shooting her. He also admitted to taking the child out of the car and driving her to Island Park and the Upper Mud Island Boat Ramp where he tossed the child into the water. Isabelle told police he tossed the gun he shot Hoyle with into the Mississippi River. Isabelle is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, perpetration of kidnapping, especially aggravated kidnapping and tampering with evidence. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/leah-gordone/support

Notwithstanding five years of strong profits and anticipatable fiery backlash, GM announced plans to cut almost 15,000 jobs in North America and to end production at five North American plants. GM intends to drop passenger-cars from its lineup, including the Chevy Cruze, the newly redesigned Cadillac CT6, the Impala, and the Buick LaCrosse.
