The Genesis G90 helped spin off the fledgling Genesis brand from its Hyundai starting place. Pivoting away from the Genesis Coupe of yore, the Genesis G90 helped push the Genesis brand into a hotly contested, and loyal, luxury sedan space. A space dominated by the likes of Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and more. After helping establish the brand, Genesis launched the second generation of its G90 in 2021. The transition to its second generation added needed tech upgrades and helped the brand's flagship sedan better fall in line with the current design language. While the V8 didn't make the transition to the second generation, the G90 offers a pair of turbocharged V6 mills, with the e-supercharged variant boasting 409 hp.  On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Genesis G90 and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the '24 G90 and highlights some of his favorite features. Later, Wren takes you along for a live drive review of the large Genesis sedan. Adding to these segments, Wren chats with Autoweek's Patrick Carone about Genesis, the G90, and the luxury sedan space. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes the '24 Genesis G90 special.

The Genesis brand spun off from the Genesis models that were originally part of Hyundai's lineup. Kicking the brand off, the company launched the G90 -- a full-size luxury sedan that was aimed at undercutting the competition while still giving customers the feeling of opulence. Genesis first showed this flagship sedan in 2017 -- a time before the sedan lost its foothold. Despite crossovers and SUVs taking more and more market share from the sedan, Genesis saw enough value in its G90 to give it a second generation, and stick with a sedan. The second-generation G90 does ditch the 5.0-liter V8, with only a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 underhood. The folks at Genesis tossed on an electronic supercharger for its top model, which sends 409 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2023 Genesis G90 and puts it through its paces. Wren guides you through the G90's new features and highlights his favorite additions to the G90. Wren also takes you along for a live drive review of the Genesis G90 and discusses how it feels dynamically. Adding to the show, Wren chats with Patrick Carone about the Genesis G90 over the years, the best features of the new model and where it stands in the pantheon of luxury cars. Closing the show, the two breakdown what makes this new G90 special.

THE WEEKLY DRIVER

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 14, 2022 34:09

Selecting the cars of the year helps celebrate another year reviewing new cars and trucks, visiting auto shows and talking with vintage car owners, book authors and industry experts about their cars of the year. There are always great and not-so-great moments driving vehicles. The industry is always abuzz. There are always changes, oddball statistics, recalls and new models and makes. What has Elon Musk done now? Will autonomous driving and EVs ever make a significant difference? Will low-profile tires stop blowing while negotiating small divots in the road? Will Audi ever change its front-grille design? As much as the automotive industry changes, sometimes not much happens. In 2007, the year the iPhone debuted, the starting price of the Toyota Corolla was $14,925; In 2022, the year a robotic toy cat that nibbles for human comfort made its debut, the starting price of a Toyota Corolla was $20,245. The average price of a new car in 2007 was $27,958. In 2022, the new car price average surpassed $48,000. Three years after TheWeeklyDriver.com debuted, I began to compile a list of top-10 cars of the year. It was also in 2007. The list is now in its 16th year. The 2022 Ford Lightning is the first full-size electric pickup truck. It was on the TheWeeklyDriver.com's list of cars of the year. Image © James Raia/2022. As co-hosts of The Weekly Driver Podcast, Bruce Aldrich and I have expanded my yearly list of cars of the year and detailed the choices during a podcast episode. We're now in our sixth year. Many automotive publications select their best vehicles of the year at the start of the calendar year. I've always announced the selections at the end of the year. Bruce and I agree it's a better approach while reviewing current model year cars throughout the calendar year. Sometimes, a new year's model debuts prior to its corresponding calendar year. Sometimes, new models arrive later in the year. The 2017 Bentley Bentayga is the fastest SUV ever made. It topped TheWeeklyDriver.com's list of cars of the year in 2017. Image © Michael Kahn/Frogstone Media, 2017. This year, as per usual, I reviewed about 40 cars. Bruce also drove most of them, often to lunch after our podcasts and sometimes for extended review sessions. For several years, we made videos before switching to a podcast format. During some years, we've picked a car of the year, like the 2020 Corvette Stingray, the debut year of the mid-engine model. In 2017, the Bentley Bentayga was easily our favorite. In our 250th episode, Bruce and I discuss our respective lists of cars of the year, an exercise we compile individually and then share during the podcast. We mostly make the same selections. The 2020 Corvette stunned the auto world with its mid-engine design and new interior and exterior styling. It was theweeklydriver.com's top pick for 2020 Cars of the Year. Image © James Raia. One exception this year: Bruce selected the BMW M3 Competition; it didn't make my list. We didn't pick a top car of the year in 2022, but we agreed the Ford Lighting was the vehicle we liked the most for its innovation in the expanding electric vehicle segment. The rest of the list doesn't represent the most expensive, most powerful or most of anything else. It's just 10 cars and trucks that stood out for  a reason or two. My lists dating to 2004 are listed below. Follow the year links for more details on each vehicle. Bruce discusses his list on the podcast episode. Enjoy. 2022 Ford Lightning, Genesis GV70, Kia EV6, Mercedes-AMG ESQ, Cadillac CT5, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Genesis G70, Toyota Corolla Hybrid, Mercedes-Maybach, Subaru Outback. 2021 Honda Odyssey, Honda Accord Hybrid, Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150, Genesis GV80, Toyota RAV4 Prime XSE, Genesis GV90, Aston Martin Vantage, Mustang Mach-E, Rolls-Royce Ghost 2020 Corvette Stingray, Aston Martin Vantage, Genesis G90, Ford Bullitt Mustang, Hyundai Palisade, Jeep Gladiator,

To achieve the sales target, at least two new electric models are to be introduced each year. - Kia assumes – based on 160,000 BEV sales this year – that it will already sell 807,000 BEVs in 2026 and then 1.2 million battery-electric cars in 2030. - With the 1.87 million electric cars Hyundai is targeting, according to its strategy update unveiled the day before, Hyundai-Kia would have sales of more than three million electric cars in 2030. - While Hyundai has announced further development of its current EV platform E-GMP for 2025, Kia does not mention this Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA). Hyundai plans to rely not only on standardized e-motors and chassis designs, but also on batteries with cell-to-pack technology from CATL, which does not require modules. In its announcement, Kia refers to everything from the upcoming EV9 – the large E-SUV is still based on the current E-GMP. - Kia announces production of “small and mid-sized electric vehicles” in Europe starting in 2025 – this will likely be located at the Zilina plant in Slovakia Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2022/03/03/kia-aims-to-sell-1-2-million-bevs-in-2030/ KIA AUTOMODE TO LAUNCH IN 2023, COMING TO EV9 SUV FIRST - Korean car manufacturer Kia is to launch an autonomous driving mode for select vehicles from 2023 on. - AutoMode uses a range of proprietary autonomous driving technologies, which include Highway Driving Pilot to enable driver-less travel on motorways and highways. It will feature first in next year's Kia EV9 SUV and, by 2026, will be available in all new models launched in major markets. - AutoMode will receive regular over-the-air updates as new features are developed. Kia will also enhance and improve the system with the goal of eventually offering fully autonomous technology. Original Source : https://www.pocket-lint.com/cars/news/kia/160259-kia-automode-to-launch-in-2023-autonomous-driving-coming-to-ev9-suv-first HYUNDAI BRANDS TO USE NEW EV PLATFORM WITH STANDARDIZED BATTERIES AND MOTORS - Hyundai Motor Group has just launched its first models based on a dedicated electric-vehicle platform known as the E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform), but the Korean auto giant has already announced a next-generation platform that will further standardize key parts across vehicles from the Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brands. - The new platform is known as the IMA (Integrated Modular Architecture), and it's an evolution of the E-GMP design. But unlike the E-GMP, which has different battery systems for each vehicle it supports, the IMA will have a standardized battery. The motors (of which there will be five types) and key chassis components will also be standardized, all helping to improve production efficiencies. - the platform will suit all segments and will be used for both passenger vehicles and purpose-built vehicles, such as delivery vehicles and shuttles for self-driving taxi services. - From 2025, Genesis will only launch EVs. - the redesigned Genesis G90 will offer a self-driving capability at Level 3 on the SAE scale in some markets by the second half of 2022 Original Source : https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1135204_hyundai-brands-to-use-new-ev-platform-with-standardized-batteries-and-motors MERCEDES EQS SUV SPIED UP CLOSE TESTING IN CALIFORNIA - The EQS is currently the most technologically advanced EV from the Stuttgart-based firm and it will soon morph into a high-riding EQS SUV. We've seen it testing on a number of occasions and a new video shows us a prototype on a parking lot in South California. - This new sighting of the model doesn't give us a look under the camouflage, though we get a very quick look inside the cabin. For now, everything remains heavily camouflaged - The EQS will join the already existing EQA, EQB, and EQC, all built on modified platforms for combustion cars. The range-topping EV SUV will be assembled in the United States at the Tuscaloosa plant from 2022 along with the smaller EQE SUV. - The only piece of confirmed information available so far is that Mercedes estimates the range between charges will be up to 373 miles (600 kilometers), depending on the configuration. Organizers say one of the big-ticket items that car enthusiasts will come to check out is the Fully-electric Ford F-150 Lightning. - The newest attraction this year is the e-Track, the show's first-ever multi-brand electric vehicle test track. This involves turning the Group's largest engineering unit with 11,500 employees into a pace-setter for the Volkswagen brand's transformation into a technology company. - The main emphasis is on a complete redesign of the development process, making it interdisciplinary, focused squarely on software, customer requirements and SSP, Volkswagen's electric platform of the future, and centered on functions rather than individual components. - This is expected to cut development time by about a quarter, increase the speed of new software releases and also significantly accelerate manufacturing processes in production. - In the 1990s, vehicle development centered primarily on components. As functions and electronics were added in the early 2000s, connectivity began to play an increasingly important role. Now and in the future, the vehicle must be viewed as one system in the customer's entire ecosystem and communicate seamlessly with all systems outside the vehicle. - vehicle projects will be completed in 40 months instead of 54 months as before Original Source : http://www.automobilsport.com/cars-tuning--37/cars-tuning--37,234746,Volkswagen-realigns-Technical-Development-shorter-product-cycles-and-faster-digital-offerings,news.htm AUDI REVEALS UPDATED Q4 E-TRON EV WITH FASTER CHARGING AND UPDATED INTERIOR   Original Source : https://www.aol.co.uk/motoring/audi-reveals-updated-q4-e-132743050.html 2022 FIAT E-ULYSSE DEBUTS AS AN ELECTRIC MINIVAN FOR EUROPE Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/571006/fiat-e-ulysse-electric-mpv/ GLOBAL BATTERY DEMAND TO INCREASE 15-FOLD AS EV BOOM TAKES OFF Original Source : https://oilprice.com/Energy/Crude-Oil/Global-Battery-Demand-To-Increase-15-Fold-As-EV-Boom-Takes-Off.html TESLA FEARS HAVING TO SHUT DOWN SERVICE CENTERS IN OKLAHOMA AS NEW BILL PASSES COMMITTEE Original Source : https://electrek.co/2022/03/03/tesla-fears-having-to-shut-down-service-centers-oklahoma-new-bill-passes-committee TESLA ROADSTER MAKES HISTORY WITH $250K SALE Original Source : https://www.benzinga.com/news/22/02/25884348/tesla-roadster-makes-history-with-250k-sale-heres-the-worlds-most-expensive-tesla THE ARC ONE IS AN ELECTRIC BOAT WITH A BATTERY PACK THREE TIMES THE SIZE OF TESLA'S Original Source : https://www.theverge.com/2022/3/3/22958830/arc-electric-boat-pre-proudction-photo-video-battery BYD SELLS 88,283 NEVS IN FEB, UP 752.6% YEAR-ON-YEAR   Original Source : https://cnevpost.com/2022/03/03/byd-sells-88283-nevs-in-feb-up-752-6-year-on-year QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What's the best looking EV on the market right now? On this episode of the “Autoweek Podcast,” Matt Weaver calls in to talk with Mike Pryson and Wesley Wren about the end of the NASCAR season, Kyle Busch’s championship and the goof that probably cost Martin Truex Jr. a second title. The team also touches on the NASCAR Trucks season ending and the future of a few Xfinity drivers. The guys also dive into the NHRA season finale and the fight that is causing a stir among drivers. After the motorsport section, Jake Lingeman and Andrew Stoy replace Weaver and Pryson to talk about the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show. The team touches on the highlights of the show, analyzing the Ford Mustang Mach-E, refreshed Genesis G90 and the 2021 Nissan Sentra. The guys also dissect the trends of this year’s LA show: namely, electrification and uber-expensive crossovers. Before the drives section, Jake and Wesley sit down with Adam Carolla to talk about his latest documentary: Shelby American. Carolla discusses how this documentary came to be, mostly because of all the leftover stories from another of Carolla’s docs, The 24 Hour War. As you can imagine The 24 Hour War covered Shelby’s involvement in the Ford endurance racing program of the 1960s. Carolla felt that the story of Shelby had to be told, and you can find it all in this documentary. The Autoweek Fleet returns for the drives portion of the show and highlights what the team has driven over the past week. The stars of this week’s show: the Genesis G70, the Ram 1500 Ecodiesel and the Ford Explorer ST. Music: “Well, at least I’m not vaping” by Summerbruise

The ISDA Secure Transportation and Executive Protection News Podcast for Friday, October 26th, 2018 ====================== In Vehicle News From Consumer Reports Vehicle Reliability Survey Consumer Reports just announced the results of its Annual Auto Survey based on data on reliability collected from the vehicles of over 500,000 Consumer Reports members. From this data, Consumer Reports can let shoppers know which vehicles are likely to have troublesome turbocharged engines, infuriating infotainment systems, and taxing transmissions, among other problems. Consumer Reports’ list is made up of 29 car manufacturers and points out each brand’s most unreliable and reliable vehicle. The survey reinforces our recommendation that consumers should avoid brand-new or redesigned models and wait a year or two until the automaker has had the chance to work out the kinks and headaches that often arise. The top 5 most unreliable vehicles are the Volvo S90 which suffered from display screen freezes; problems with the climate system and interior cabin rattles along with complaints about engine knocking or pinging, followed by the Cadillac ATS, Tesla Model x, Dodge Ram 3500, and GMC Sierra 2500 Heavy Duty. Looking at the reliability score of a few of the most common Executive Vehicles The 2019 Lexus LS has a score of 69, a road test score of 72 out of 100, with a reliability score of 3 out 5, and owner satisfaction of 4 out 5 The 2019 Genesis G90 has an overall score of 72, a road test score of 89 out of 100, with a reliability score of 2 out 5 with reported problems in the areas of body hardware and power equipment, and an owner satisfaction of 5 out 5. The 2019 Audi A8 does not have an overall score as of yet, however the reliability score is 3 out 5, and the owner satisfaction of 4 out 5. The 2019 Chevrolet Suburban has an overall score of 69, a road test score of 74 out of 100, a reliability score of 3 out 5, and owner satisfaction of 4 out 5. The 2019 Lincoln Navigator has an overall score of 60, a road test score of 65 out of 100, a reliability score of 3 out 5, with an owner satisfaction rate of 4 out 5. https://www.consumerreports.org/car-reliability-owner-satisfaction/who-makes-the-most-reliable-cars/ ====================== In Security News From CNN Investigators search Florida mail facility for clues to bombmaker The nationwide manhunt for the person or people who sent 10 potential bombs to critics of President Donald Trump and CNN's office in New York led authorities to a mail facility in South Florida on Thursday night. Several of the packages went through a US Postal facility in Opa-locka, Florida, two law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation said. On Thursday night, the Miami-Dade County Police Department said it was assisting federal agents who were at the facility as part of the ongoing investigation. https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/26/politics/bombs-clinton-obama-waters-biden/index.html ====================== And from ISDA Member Bill Peeler, CEO, and owner of Peeler Group International Bombs and Bomb Threats – A Refresher As a professional you depend on our training and not your emotions. In the past couple of days, we have observed the location of at least nine explosive devices in the United States. As with any situation where aggressive behavior is displayed through terroristic acts or violent threats, emotions are charged. As my good friend, Dr. Richard Kobetz would say, “it’s an old bottle of wine with a new label”. To this end we adjust our methods of mitigation in these situations as required by contemporary times, having said this, we still look to historical protocols that have worked and we stick with them. So, to assist with focusing on what matters I thought I would provide a quick refresher as to what anyone should be aware of and what you should be doing on a daily basis. Bill’s article also includes a Bomb Threat Caller checklist and a Suspicious package checklist http://www.peelergroup.com/bombs-and-bomb-threats-a-refresher/ ====================== In Cyber Security News From Security Magazine Phishing Attacks up by 297 Percent in Q3 2018 A report illustrates how cybercriminals are increasingly targeting retailers and their customers through digital and social channels as retailers leverage new channels  for increased revenue opportunities "The Retail and eCommerce Threat Landscape Report (October 2018), notes a 297 percent rise in the number of false retailer websites designed to "phish" for customer credentials. In Q3 alone there was an average of 23 phishing sites per company, which is a significant increase from 2017, which averaged 5.9 phishing attacks per company. In addition, says the report, there was a 278 percent rise in stolen goods listed on black markets for resale. Even more: an average of 22.1 internal login pages or development servers exposed per retail company in 2018. When accessed this gives cybercriminals a portal into the retailer's internal network   Fake apps and social media profiles are on the rise with a 469 percent spike in suspicious applications and a 345 percent increase in fake social media profiles (respectively) in Q4 2017    https://www.securitymagazine.com/articles/89512-phishing-attacks-up-by-297-percent-in-q3-2018 ==================== Links to all news stories mentioned in this podcast are available at the archive website securitydrivernews.libsyn.com.
