Time for another holiday bonus episode for our loyal DFM-fam! We hope you're having a great start to your holiday season! This containment holiday horror flick is ok(ish) with us. The kills are great (we just wanted more of them)! We talk about workplace behavior, incels, what a movie needs to make it a holiday horror flick and a lil' more.
Mini bonus-ep time! We chat Patrick O'Neal & Mary Woronov in this early 70s low-budget, late night holiday chiller. Some stuff works for us and some doesn't. It is pretty neat to see some similarities between this flick & other slashers that came after it! Hope you enjoy!
Welcome back for our penultimate episode of Season 2! This week we return to the British-horror masterworks of Terence Fisher. Blending Hammer's gothic vamp trademarks w/some bold character decisions, 1960's Brides leaves its (bite) mark & inspires additional 60s & 70s vampire flicks that feature a collection of bloody baddies in place of a primary antagonist.
Here's another Black Friday bonus ep! Ghostly Puppers & dad finally get around to discussing found footage, painting on walls, colorful poisons, creepy kids, when true crime goes supernatural, Temu, different boogeymen, & more.
This 2013 horror-adjacent thriller is a deeply unsettling & haunting experience. This Thanksgiving-set film turns a cozy holiday into an abduction nightmare. Eerie true detective work combines w/prowler & home invasion elements, taking the story and characters down to the darkest of depths. Prisoners matches films like Seven in dread, Zodiac in manhunting, Sinister in creepiness and Fallen for suspense. We think Prisoners is a perfect blend of tension, horror, and psychological depth.
Happy Turkey Week everyone! For our 2nd annual Black Friday special we return to Romero land to chat the beloved legend's third (but not final) entry. How does the plot, characters, and setting hold up for you compared to Night & Dawn? We talk the difference in the zombie kills/effects, what happens to our survivors and we shares some personal connections to this film, including the Wampum Mines filming location. Love is the answer. Gobble gobble!
The DFM crew continues its 2nd Annual Hungry for the Holidays with this 1979 spook-house classic featuring an A-list cast. All Warren/Lutz untruths & truths aside, this movie weaves excellent performances, storytelling, setting, and music into a chilling & chilly Satanic-November tale that makes even the strongest characters of the cloth keel over. Join us and listen in to our love of Brolin, Kidder, Steiger, Harry the dog, in-tune women, 70s opening titles, uncomfortable axe throwing moments and more!
The DFM-4 kick off their annual Hungry for the Holidays by diving into the chaotic brilliance of this over-the-top 1996 action-horror comedy that has some serious bite! This week's film serves up a killer cocktail of action, suspense, and dark humor, showcasing the outrageous collaboration of Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, not to mention George Clooney's undeniable coolness in his breakout role. Carrie and Case highlight Tom Savini and Michael Park's memorable moments and the jaw-dropping effects from the KNB EFX Group, which elevate the film's gruesome artistry to a whole new level. Joining the discussion, Jake the Midnight Traveler shares his personal tales, while Sinister Sister AJ celebrates the film's unstoppable energy.
Hey DFM fam. Just sharing a little bit about our recent Vegas / Joe Bob & Darcy Jamboree trip experience!
Attention all vampire subgenre & Hammer horror fans! This ep is for you! Lee's first bite of the Drac role takes the usual Stoker vamp characteristics & turns them up a notch. This not-so-faithful novel adaptation boasts intricate set designs, attention to costume detail, & rich coloring, making it a can't miss. We talk Lee & Cushing's shared filmography and the often unappreciated performance of Melissa Stribling as Mina. The Midnight Traveler discusses his discovery of this film, & Sinister Sister offers her differing takeaways to close out the episode.
The DFM quartet dives headfirst into the blood-buffet that is this unique 1987 Jackie Kong-directed cult classic. We discuss the film's gruesomely fun kills, over-the-top acting, energetic yet chaotic atmosphere & its punk rock elements. Featuring the peculiar mythology of Sheetar, we touch on the lore building that makes this one such a zany viewing experience. As the chat wraps up, we each rate the film, and suggest some ideal double feature pairings.
[Spoiler chat starts at 14:25] Put down those back alley creeps & tune in ‘cuz we've got the entire DFM quartet on for this special bonus episode. We'll discuss the neon-lit Hollywood underbelly-deets that is the final chapter of the Ti-West/Mia Goth X-trilogy. We all find 1985 to be well represented and agree on the greatness of some of the deaths, but do we agree on Ms. Minx's character arc, the strength of the supporting characters and the way the trilogy ended? Plenty of Jake the Midnight Traveler and Annjanette aka Sinister Sister thoughts this go-round.
[Spoiler discussion begins at 18:40] Whether you've watched Longlegs or not (and whether you enjoyed it or not), there's a little something for every take during this bonus ep. We think Nicolas Cage, Maika Monroe, Alicia Witt, Kiernan Shipka, & Blair Underwood all bring excellent performances to this 90s detective horror-period piece. There's some unique elements to this flick not found in movies it has been compared to. We round out the ep discussing what movies we'd pair with Longlegs.
Another bonus! Hey DFM fam. Carrie and Case here dropping some unscripted thoughts about In A Violent Nature. Hope yinz are staying cool out there because this heat is making us CRABBY (but we're still managing to have some fun) right now. How do you feel about this recently released 3rd person POV backwoods stalk and slasher? Love it? Hate it? Something in-between!? A mini episode recap and what we're up to is included.
Welcome to the Midnight Comet Show! Don't mind the dust. Where do you land with this 1984 flick? Is it one of your favorite B-movies or is it a trying watch? Our horror trio is in disagreement once again. Does the strong cast & fun locations warrant a high score? This nostalgic cult film with an interesting plot asks “How would you spend your time after the apocalypse?”
Let's shine the headlights on one of New Zealand's finest (& oddest
Join us once again for another Ti West flick! This week we're talking the last frightening and fateful days of two unmotivated yet endearing Yankee Peddler Inn employees. How does this week's film compare to the House of the Devil and what do we think of the location and the cast this go-round? We find The Innkeepers to be a solid delight if you don't mind the mundane and lost twenty-somethings themes. Is it the perfect gateway horror? You bet!
We REALLY wish we would have caught this flick in theaters! Our trio missed this one because we all had remake sickness . . . so we all said "pass!" Woops! This 2012 meta-commentary multi-genre mashup is much better than anticipated! We discuss the days when Nextflix rented discs and when Redbox was full of undiscovered gems and germs. We also choose the character type we would be in this movie & what monsters from the whiteboard we'd choose to appease the ancient ones. Enjoy!
Grab your backpack, snacks, flashlight & a map (ok, just bring your cell) and visit the lovely countryside just beyond the historic village of Burkittsville. This week we're hiking downstream and still getting lost in this post-grunge viral internet sensation that ignited the found footage subgenre. Heather, Josh, & Mike deserve all the love (and $$$$) for their role in this flick's success. The Blair Witch Project takes filmmaking (and arts and crafts) to a fun, creepy, and intrusive place!
It's splatter time! We're talkin' the energetically fun & frightening Italian gore galore with Lamberto Bava's terror at the Metropol. This is NOT the 1985 Doc and Marty were hoping for. But us horror hounds are here for it! Kick-ass practical effects, entertaining characters & kills combine with a mysterious plot born from metal in more ways than one to make for an essential Mediterranean movie night. Plenty of Italian horror history within this ep folks! Enjoy!
We just couldn't help ourselves this week! Much love for Phantom of the Opera as depicted over the past century plus, and even more admiration for Hammer films in general. This week's episode is a little longer. We said we weren't going to go into comparing the different films and stage productions to the Gaston Leroux novel, but yeah . . .we did! Some great Hammer alum throughout this one that is light on kills but still fun. Enjoy (and leave those rats alone!)
Hey DFM fam! We kick off the first Friday in April with what many have called The black sheep of werewolf films. Well, we'd like to speak to the manager about that assessment! Is this really a werewolf film? There are some obvious nods to that subgenre, but Wolfen has unique native lore we dig. Given the history of the filmmakers it is no surprise that there is visual appeal with this urban decay/police procedural/horror-thriller mashup. And that cast!
Yay! Another bonus ep! Carrie returns for a solo mini-chat about one of her 2016 film festival faves: It Stains the Sands Red - a character-driven zombie flick about survival, redemption, and well . . .that time of the month. Demon-ette chats the main character's struggles to escape the relentless pursuit of a lone undead figure, finding herself confronted not only by the isolated horrors of the expansive and unforgiving desert, but also by her own life choices.
Hey again DFM fam! It's bonus episode time! We zoom'd with Jake the Midnight Traveler and his friend, Joseph Fotinos. Texas-based listeners remember Joseph as none other than Professor Anton Griffin from his Midnight Shadow Show.Joseph talks all things horror dating back to his childhood. He shares his love for Universal monsters, Amicus produced films, and his days working with Fangoria. Did we mention he's a University of Texas film professor!? Joseph schools us on why so many turn to horror, chats visually appealing horror films, and explains why Carrie and Case should have watched The Phantom of the Paradise yesterday. There's also some F13 franchise convo and a whole lot more.
Chant with us: "John Saxon, John Saxon, John Saxon . . ." Welcome to our first ever Spring Break episode! We're talking the evolution of the bro thanks to this boozy slasher/giallo/sex comedy in a blender, aka Welcome to Spring Break! Dig the cast, the killer & the Simonetti soundtrack of this almost-lost 80s horror B-grade at the beach.
Kick back with a pint of plain and join us for DFM's St. Paddy's Day Weekend Special II! We thoroughly enjoy just about everything Warwick Davis does, including this 90s horror comedy essential brought to you by the fine folks at Trimark Pictures. Jake the Midnight Traveler educates us on the pre self-aware moment of 90s horror, and we celebrate this week with a St. Paddy's horror mad-lib and silly sequel ideas.
Welcome to Episode 50! Our two younger horror fans, Zombie Toots and Ghostly Puppers, joined us this week! Together, we dive into the macabre of the chrome kind via John Carpenter's flick based on the Stephen King page-turner. This episode raises the question: what if Christine was converted from a combustible mean machine into a stealthy stalking electric vehicle? See you in a couple weeks for our 2nd St. Paddy's Day Special!
(Originally aired 4/14/23) Oh we cannot wait much longer for Evil Dead Rise! In Episode 10's Comfy Horror movie review, DFM discusses Carrie and Jake's favorite franchise entry, Army of Darkness, which is the least horror-ish and often loved by fantasy and action flick lovers too. We'll also discuss the 3rd Linda, played by an actress that is married to someone that created a track for the Army of Darkness soundtrack, and offer up casting suggestions like oh say, Sean Connery – yes, we all need him to read an Army of Darkness novelization – or – the Necronomicon itself!
