What the Riff?!?
1966 - January: The Yardbirds "Having a Rave Up"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later May 26, 2025 33:55

When you explore the music of The Yardbirds you are really observing the evolution of what would become hard rock.  This group started in 1963 and over its time would engage the talents of three of the greatest guitarists of the rock world:  Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page.  Additional musicians in the group through 1968 were Keith Relf on vocals and harmonica, Jim McCarty on drums, Chris Dreja on rhythm guitar, and Paul Samwell-Smith on bass.  The group was founded in the blues, but over time would explore psychedelic rock, pop rock, and hard rock, with instrumental jams being a signature sound throughout their tenure.Having a Rave Up, also known as "Having a Rave Up with the Yardbirds," is their second American album, and showcases two of their virtuoso guitarists.  The album has one side of studio recordings in which Jeff Beck is the guitarist.  Side two is a compilation of live performances featuring Eric Clapton on guitar.  During a time when most songs were expected to run about three minutes, the Yardbirds would extend these out in live performances to six or seven minutes with instrumental jams known as "rave ups."  The combination of studio and live work is an excellent introduction to The Yardbirds, as the band's strength was in their live performances.  Their studio efforts would improve with the experimentation of Jeff Beck.Jimmy Page would become their guitarist in mid-1966 until their split-up in mid-1968.  He would form a group as "The New Yardbirds" shortly thereafter, which would be renamed shortly thereafter to Led Zeppelin.Rob brings us this study in the origins of rock for this week's podcast. Heart Full of SoulThis song was the first single released by The Yardbirds after Jeff Beck joined the group.  It was written by Graham Gouldman, who would later be the co-lead singer and bassist of 10cc.  The band wanted to include a sitar in the instrumentation for this song, but when things didn't work out for that, Beck experimented with his guitar to duplicate the eastern sound of the sitar instead. You're a Better Man than IThe opening song from the album is also known as "Mister, You're a Better Man than I."  It was written by brothers Mike and Brian Hugg, and is an attempt at a more folk rock song.  The socially conscious lyrics take aim at the hypocrisy of society and politics, stating that you shouldn't judge a person based on superficial appearances or education.Smokestack LightningThe live opener to side two is a cover of an old blues song recorded by American blues artist Howlin' Wolf in 1956.  The inspiration for the title came from watching trains go by at night and seeing the sparks come out of the smokestack. The Train Kept a-Rollin'While Aerosmith's cover may be more famous, this jump blues piece was originally performed by Tiny Bradshaw in 1951.  The Yardbirds played this song during their first American tour in 1965, and Sam Phillips recorded it for them in Memphis later that year.  It closes out side 1 of the album. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television action comedy "Batman"This campy superhero show premiered this month. STAFF PICKS:Don't Think Twice, It's Alright by The Wonder Who?Bruce begins the staff picks with a disguise group.  The Four Seasons used the name "The Wonder Who?" for four records released from 1965 to 1967, including this one.  Frankie Valli wasn't happy with his vocals on this song, and he recorded it with a "joke" falsetto voice while trying to break the tension in the studio.  All Your Love by John Mayall & the BluesbreakersLynch brings us a blues song originally recorded by American blues musician Otis Rush in 1958.  Multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter John Mayall led this group, which included Eric Clapton on guitar and John McVie on bass.  This single is the lead-off track to the debut album "Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton," also known as "The Beano Album" because Clapton is reading a children's comic called "The Beano" on the front cover. My Generation by the WhoWayne's staff pick is the hit that started the trajectory for the Who.  Guitarist Pete Townshend wrote this song about young rebellion.  Roger Daltrey incorporates a stutter in his vocals to sound like a British mod on speed.  While this song would reach number 2 on the UK charts, it topped out at number 74 on the US charts.Day Tripper by the BeatlesRob features a well known song from the Beatles, recorded during the "Rubber Soul" album sessions but not included on the album itself.  It was released as a double A-side single along with "We Can Work it Out" during a time when the Beatles were under pressure to release a single in time for the 1965 Christmas season.   COMEDY TRACK:The Lurch by Ted CassidyTed Cassidy played Lurch on "The Addams Family," and also performed this novelty song.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Acts 16:6-15They went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. When they had come opposite Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them; so, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas. During the night Paul had a vision: there stood a man of Macedonia pleading with him and saying, ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us.' When he had seen the vision, we immediately tried to cross over to Macedonia, being convinced that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them.We set sail from Troas and took a straight course to Samothrace, the following day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district* of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city for some days. On the sabbath day we went outside the gate by the river, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down and spoke to the women who had gathered there. A certain woman named Lydia, a worshipper of God, was listening to us; she was from the city of Thyatira and a dealer in purple cloth. The Lord opened her heart to listen eagerly to what was said by Paul. When she and her household were baptized, she urged us, saying, ‘If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come and stay at my home.' And she prevailed upon us. This weekend kicks off not only the start of summer for so many, but it also serves as the unofficial beginning of graduation season. In the office this week, I asked the question: what gift should you get a graduate? I told them about a friend's mom who would give monogrammed towels as her graduate gift. +Mark and Amanda informed me that I should not pick up that tradition. Money was the consensus, just get a card with some cash. I don't disagree, but I am warning you graduates now, I can almost guarantee that someone will give out a copy of the Dr. Suess classic, “Oh The Places You'll Go”. And it is a fitting tribute for the occasion:“ Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the person who'll decide where to go.”It is a remarkable feeling, no? To be on the precipice of what comes next and then to set off on the journey. It is so exciting, perhaps a little frightening, if not for you, then for your parents or grandparents and other loved ones. Timothy likely felt this same way when he began his journey with Paul and Silas. In our text, the “they” we hear is in reference to those three Paul, Silas, and Timothy, maybe more. Timothy just joined the group. In the passage immediately before this, Paul and Silas stop in Lystra, where they hear about this young disciple named Timothy. Among believers in Lystra, Timothy is well spoken of. So Paul asks Timothy to join him on this mission. Timothy probably thought “oh the place I'll go”. And go they did, from town to town, the churches were growing, everything was great! That is until they came to Phrygia. Paul and crew want to go to Asia. They think, “that's where God is calling us to proclaim the Gospel. So that must be the right place for us.” So they went to turn left and head to Asia, but the Holy Spirit forbade them to go. That's strange… why would the Holy Spirit not let me go? And what does that even mean? Did a giant wind push against them every time they tried to turn left? Did their compass only point them east? However it happened, they couldn't go into Asia. So the crew thinks well what do you do when you can't turn left… you go right! And so they try to turn right and go to Bithynia, but the Holy Spirit doesn't allow that either. With no other options left, they go to Troas. If you are Timothy, you've got to wonder what went wrong? Everything was so good? We were going to all these places, the church was growing, we had a great plan! But just when everything seemed great, suddenly it wasn't anymore. Graduates, this will undoubtedly happen to you. Surely everyone gathered has had a time like that: when everything seemed to be going great, you thought you were doing what God wanted you to do, but suddenly your plans changed (or they were changed for you), and the roads you wanted to take became blocked. Maybe the major you'd hope for didn't work out. Or you didn't get that job you thought you always wanted or were let go of the job you loved. Maybe that relationship you never thought would end came to a close. Or an unexpected trip to the doctor makes you put everything on hold. Despite your best efforts you ended up in a place you never wanted to be. We've all been there. As Dr Suess says: “I'm sorry to say so but, sadly, it's true that Bang-ups and Hang-ups can happen to you. You can get all hung up, in a prickle-ly perch. And your gang will fly on. You'll be left in a Lurch. You'll come down from the Lurch with an unpleasant bump. And the chances are, then, that you'll be in a Slump. And when you're in a Slump, you're not in for much fun. Un-slumping yourself is not easily done.Yet, it is at those places you never wanted to be, in the times you least expect, that something will happen or someone will come and help and get you unslumped. For Timothy and crew their unslumping came from a vision that Paul had while in Troas: a man saying “Come to Macedonia and help us.” The three of them got up and immediately headed to Macedonia, “convinced that God had called them to proclaim the good news there”.They set sail from Troas, landed in Samothrace, and then came ashore at Neapolis. Neapolis is this wonderful little seaside town, the kind of place you want to land in, and maybe put down some roots; enjoy the sandy beaches and nice weather. I could imagine Timothy saying to Paul and Silas, “we don't really need to follow that vision, that dream, that call, right?” But Paul and his companions don't stop and stay there. It's nice, but they know it's not where they are supposed to be. You'll have your own Neapolis too, places and opportunities that seem really nice, the city or job or relationship you could see yourself in. And the temptation to stay will be strong, yet you'll know it's not right. Heed the voice, the vision, the calling God has placed on you. There will be a reason you move on, even if it is not clear in the moment. Finally Paul, Timothy, and Silas land in Philippi, even though that was not the original goal. Remember Paul wanted to spread the Gospel and grow the church in Asia. But listen to how this part of Paul's mission ends. On the sabbath they all go to the river, hoping to find people praying. They join a group of women and among them is Lydia, likely a wealthy business woman with great influence. She listened eagerly to Paul, had herself and her whole family baptized, and then opened her home to Paul and Timothy and Silas. Lydia is from Thyatria, which is in Asia, the very place Paul hoped to spread the gospel in the first place. Through all the travels, the wrong turns, and the change of plans, Paul does in fact fulfill his mission of growing the church in Asia, just not where and how he expected too.Despite our best efforts, God's calling and leading come through mistaken directions and failed attempts, which can certainly be frustrating and make discernment difficult. We'd like to think “we are the one's who decide where to go”. As Dr/ Seuss puts it. But that's where he's wrong. As Paul, Timothy and Silas attest, it is an illusion to think it's all up to us. God is in charge of the journey you're on. At times, it won't look the way you want or lead to the places you'd hoped. But thankfully Jesus promises us an Advocate, the Holy Spirit, that helps us in discernment and guides us to where we need to go, what we need to do, and who we should meet along the way. For Paul and Timothy, the journey nor the destination were likely what the team imagined. The wandering, the rejection, the vision in a dream, and the people they met. They did not expect a woman, that wasnt what the vision showed. Yet, in the end God's will was done, not their own, which is what we all pray for.Graduates/young people, it's okay if your journey in life looks like this. Parents/grandparents, it's okay if your young person's journey looks like this. God is still at work in the mess of it all. The reality for not just graduates but for all of us is our own journeys will be less like us deciding the places we go, and more like the wanderings of Paul and the rest: ending up in places we didn't expect, receiving direction in ways we didn't anticipate, and meeting people we never predicted, but trusting that God is still leading.“Plans are made. Plans come apart.” Says Kate Bowler, “New delights or tragedies pop up in their place. And nothing human or divine will map out this life, this life that has been more painful than I could have imagined. More beautiful than I could have imagined.”Amen.

Jon and Greg explain how this move won't end public education but will likely improve it by shifting control to state and local officials. They also push back against Democrats like Sen. While relieved that no Taliban members were freed in exchange, Jon and Greg criticize the Biden administration for failing to classify Glezmann as "improperly detained" for more than a year. They also slam the media for downplaying the plight of Americans imprisoned or killed by oppressive regimes and terrorist groups. Finally, they break down polling showing more Democrats view their congressional leadership negatively than positively. Federal forestry changes leave state officials in the lurch

The state’s Department of Natural Resources says it’s coming up with backup plans to address the growing threat of serious wildfires in Washington. This, as it's typically close working relationship with federal forest managers has frayed under the Trump Administration. Some of this started in mid-February, when the U.S. Department of Agriculture cut thousands of probationary employees at the U.S. Forest Service. The USDA is in charge of stewarding places like the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and the Gifford-Pinchot National Forest. Altogether, about 2,000 employees across the country were fired. The USDA emphasized that no “operational firefighters” had been let go, and argued the critical work of responding to wildfires would not be interrupted. But an organization called Grassroots Wildland Firefighters estimated that three-quarters of the employees laid off had secondary wildland firefighting duties, meaning firefighting wasn’t their primary job, but they were pulled in to fight fires as needed. Soundside has heard directly from laid off workers at the Forest Service based here in Washington who have wildland firefighting certifications of various levels. They say they are in limbo right now, even after there have been multiple court orders to reinstate fired federal workers -- at least, temporarily. They’re ringing alarm bells about the loss of manpower for this fire season. All of this puts Washington’s DNR into a tough spot. The department oversees wildfire prevention and response on state lands, usually working closely with the federal government. Soundside was joined by Dave Upthegrove, Washington's Commissioner of Public Lands, and State Forester George Geissler. This podcast was recorded live for our beloved Patreon members.  In our private Patreon FaceBook group a member asked others to share tips for new riders.  Lurch and I, as well as the Patreon members in private chat discuss many tips.  Motorcyclists remain an exception to the overall decline in U.S. highway fatalities, according to recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In the first half of 2024, motor vehicle fatalities dropped by 3.2% compared to 2023, with declines across almost all categories, including pedestrians, bicyclists, and passenger vehicle occupants. However, motorcyclist fatalities rose by 1%, standing out as a rare increase alongside a similar rise for individuals over 65. This reflects a long-term trend where fatalities among motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians constitute a growing proportion of overall traffic deaths, while fatalities for occupants of cars and trucks decline. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Modern automotive safety features such as anti-lock brakes, traction control, and adaptive cruise control have significantly improved passenger safety, reducing crash severity. However, motorcycles, even with advanced features, remain inherently less protective in crashes. While some motorcyclists point to distracted drivers as a major cause, self-inflicted risks also play a significant role. Nearly half of fatal motorcycle crashes are single-vehicle incidents, and about 25% involve alcohol, underscoring the importance of rider responsibility in reducing fatalities. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! The data serves as a sobering reminder for motorcyclists to prioritize safety. Practicing proper riding techniques, maintaining situational awareness, avoiding alcohol, and investing in training can make a meaningful difference. With motorcycle fatalities on the rise, it's critical for riders to take proactive steps to protect themselves, as the broader road safety improvements have yet to extend meaningfully to their community. In this podcast episode we talk about all the modifications we did to my newly Police Harley. After getting it fully equipped with police-specific gear, it's now officially in service. Lurch and I talk about how we, as a department, decided to set up our police motorcycles, highlighting some of the specialty equipment used. While some features come factory-ready from Harley-Davidson, many others are department-specific or added by third-party vendors. Let's dive into the details. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE In addition to police-specific features, I've equipped my bike with several products donated from the Law Abiding Biker™ Store Biker Gripper Cell Phone Mount: The strongest, sleekest motorcycle cell phone mount available. It's perfect for quick access, even in the most demanding environments. It's tested on police courses and proven to hold phones securely, even when the bike is dropped. Ciro Cup Holder: For those long shifts or rides in hot weather, hydration is key. This cup holder ensures I always have my water or coffee within reach. Adjustable PSR Levers: These allow for customized grip and omfort and they are adjustable for ultimate feel and control. Armor Tail Light: This LED tail light, available from the Law Abiding Biker™ Store, is programmable with a smartphone app, offering various patterns to catch the attention of other motorists. Fang Signal Inserts: Replace stock halogen bulbs with these LED inserts for both front and rear signals, available in red or amber, depending on your preference. Ciro Filler Panel Lights: Fill those ugly voids in the rear of your bike with LED lighting.  More products mentioned in the video below CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! One of the most exciting aspects of this build was getting the green light for some performance upgrades. We installed a Stage One Kit, including a Screamin' Eagle high-flow intake and exhaust system, to improve airflow and enhance performance. Screamin' Eagle Intake and Exhaust: Although we used OEM Harley-Davidson parts, the upgrades significantly improved the bike's performance, making it sound better and increase power.  EFI Remapping and Tuning: After installing the intake and exhaust, we remapped the Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) using the Screamin' Eagle tuner. While not our first choice, it got the job done. In the future, we'd recommend the Vance & Hines Fuelpak 4 tuner, available in our store, for superior performance and ease of use. Comfort and Safety Mods Comfort is key, especially for officers spending long hours in the saddle. The addition of adjustable levers and an extended brake pedal greatly improved both comfort and safety. Adjustable Levers: The PSR Anthem Pro Adjustable Levers offer maximum customization, allowing you to find the perfect adjustment for both the clutch and brake. Extended Brake Pedal: This is one of the most important safety mods we made. The extended brake pedal is ergonomically designed, putting your foot in the ideal position for emergency braking, making it quicker and easier to stop when needed. In this podcast episode, we dive deep into the different compositions of motorcycle brake pads.  We discuss the pros and cons of organic, semi-sintered, and sintered brake pads.  What does sinter mean?  We're glad you asked.  Sintering is the process of forming a solid mass of material through heat and pressure without melting to the point of liquefaction. This process involves the atoms in materials diffusing across the particle boundaries and fusing together into one piece.  In simple terms, it is combining different materials, usually but not always metals.  We give our opinions on which option is the best.   SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Organic brake pads are made primarily from non-metallic materials, such as rubber, glass, resin, carbon, and Kevlar fibers. These materials are bound together with a high-temperature resin, creating a compound that provides effective braking performance while remaining quieter and less harsh on the brake rotors than metallic pads. Organic brake pads are often chosen for everyday driving because they are quieter and offer a smoother feel. However, for high-performance or heavy-duty applications (like racing or towing), other materials like semi-metallic or ceramic may be better options due to their greater durability and resistance to heat. Get your brake pads from the Law Abiding Biker Store: BRAKE PADS Semi-sintered brake pads are a hybrid type of brake pad that combines the characteristics of both organic and sintered (metallic) brake pads. These pads contain a mix of organic materials and metallic particles (usually copper or steel) that are bonded under high pressure and heat. This blend creates a balanced pad that offers a middle ground between the smooth, quiet braking of organic pads and the durability and heat resistance of fully sintered metallic pads. Semi-sintered brake pads are ideal for those who want a balance between durability and smooth braking, making them suitable for a range of applications from commuter vehicles to light performance and touring bikes. They're popular in the motorcycle world and in light to moderate performance vehicle applications, where a mix of daily usability and resilience to moderate heat is desired. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Sintered brake pads, also known as metallic brake pads, are made from a high concentration of metal particles (like copper, bronze, or steel) that are fused together under intense heat and pressure. This process, called sintering, creates a dense, highly durable material that performs well under extreme temperatures and heavy loads, making sintered pads ideal for high-performance, heavy-duty, and off-road applications.  Sintered brake pads are best for vehicles used in rugged or high-performance applications where high durability and heat resistance are necessary. They're commonly used in motorcycles, off-road vehicles, trucks, and heavy machinery, as well as in sports cars that need powerful braking in extreme conditions. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, I'm joined by Lurch and we discuss warm-weather protective motorcycle gear.   Recently, we embarked on a 10-day motorcycle road trip around the East Coast, covering over 3,000 miles. For the entire journey, I exclusively wore the Alpinestars T SP X Superair Jacket, and it didn't take long for me to fall in love with this affordable, progressive piece of riding gear. After thoroughly testing it in various conditions and temperatures, I decided to bring it right into the Law Abiding Biker Store. The Myth of Riding in a T-Shirt When the weather gets hot, it's common to see riders hitting the road in nothing but T-shirts, mistakenly believing it keeps them cool. This couldn't be further from the truth. Unfortunately, this misconception leaves many riders tired, dehydrated, sunburned, and most concerning, completely unprotected in case of an accident. As a full-time Police Motorcycle Officer and Investigator with 28 years of experience, I've responded to numerous motorcycle collisions, including fatalities. The sight of a long skin trail on the pavement is a grim reminder of the dangers of riding without proper gear. If you witness this once, you'll never consider riding in a T-shirt again. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE The Evolution of Protective Riding Gear Gone are the days when leather was the only option for motorcycle protection. Today, there's no excuse to ride unprotected, thanks to advancements in protective gear. Modern riding jackets not only offer superior protection but also excel in regulating body temperature and airflow. The Alpinestars T SP X Superair Jacket is a prime example, combining high quality with an entry-level price, making it accessible for all riders. The Alpinestars T SP X Superair Jacket: A Game Changer Optimal Cooling and Comfort One of the standout features of the Alpinestars T SP X Superair Jacket is its exceptional internal climate control. With extensive mesh paneling on the torso, arms, and upper chest, the jacket ensures optimal airflow, keeping you cool even in hot weather. Unlike a T-shirt, which absorbs heat and causes you to lose moisture rapidly, this jacket helps you retain moisture, keeping you hydrated and comfortable. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Durability and Protection Constructed from lightweight 600D poly-fabric, the T SP X Superair Jacket offers excellent abrasion resistance, providing reliable protection in the event of a fall. The jacket is equipped with Nucleon Flex Plus elbow and shoulder armor, known for its flexibility and breathability. Despite its protective features, the armor has a thin profile that enhances comfort and allows for freedom of movement. An Alpinestars Nucleon Plasma Back Protector Insert can be added. The jacket is available in different colors.  Versatility Across Seasons During my trip, I experienced temperatures ranging from 60°F to over 100°F, and the jacket performed exceptionally well in all conditions. For cooler temperatures, pairing the Superair Jacket with the Alpinestars Purpose Mid-Layer Jacket extends its usability to three seasons. Below 60°F, the base layer adds warmth. The Importance of a Proper Base Layer From my experience in various riding disciplines—street, adventure, and dirt—wearing a proper base layer in hot weather is crucial. It provides support and helps regulate your temperature and perspiration. The Alpinestars Ride Tech v2 Summer Long Sleeve Underwear Top & Bottoms is, by far, the best hot weather base layer I've ever used. It instantly cools you down once you're on the move, significantly enhancing your comfort. It's time to leave the T-shirt riding era behind and invest in gear that not only protects but also enhances your riding experience. This affordable jacket is a game changer for hot weather riding, offering the perfect blend of comfort, protection, and style. Don't compromise your safety—gear up and ride with confidence. During Tim Walz's first rally as the Democratic vice presidential candidate, Americans got to see a quick-witted and effective speaker who knows how to go on the offensive when he needs to. But beyond the theatre, what's his actual record as Minnesota governor? Two political insiders who've been following Walz for decades sit down with Gerry Baker to size up his tenure. John Hinderaker, president of the Center of the American Experiment, and Scott W. Johnson, a retired Minneapolis attorney and contributor to the site Power Line, paint a bleak picture of rising crime, economic decline and tumbling school performance. They also see Harris's selection of Walz as confirmation that she's willing to keep up with the demands of the far-left flank of her party.   Learn more about your ad choices.
