Ben and Cailean are joining us for a four way pod this week! Ben and Cailean are the chaps behind Impact Route Setting. Which is a business that, amongst other things, runs route setting courses. They are both very well established route setters in the UK, as well as being strong rock climbers. We wanted to have a good chat about the inside scene, and listen to their takes about the state of the industry. We had a long chat about indoor grading and we also got their opinions about the IFSC scoring changes and how that might impact the route setters who have the tricky job of setting in the big leagues. Donate here: https://www.justgiving.com/page/cailean This spring, Cailean is putting on his bunny ears and joining his nursery friends in a very special hopping challenge—Hop for Hospice—to help raise vital funds for Thames Hospice. Cailean is just one year old, but even at this young age, he's taking his first steps (or hops!) toward making a difference in the lives of others. With your support, every bounce, wiggle, and hop he takes will help ensure that Thames Hospice can continue providing specialist care to those facing life-limiting illnesses in our community. Thames Hospice offers free, compassionate, end-of-life care to individuals and families across East Berkshire and South Buckinghamshire. Their work is only possible through fundraising efforts like this one. The hospice must raise £34,000 every single day to keep their services running. That's where Cailean—and you—come in. If you're able to support his hopping efforts with a donation, no matter the size, you'll be helping to bring expert care and everyday kindness to those who need it most. Let's help Cailean hop big for a cause that matters. Thank you for your generosity. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Thank you to the folks at Sustain (https://sustainoss.org/) for providing the hosting account for CHAOSSCast! CHAOSScast – Episode 106 In this episode of the CHAOSScast, host Alice Sowerby introduces guests Dawn Foster, Cailean Osborne, and Paul Sharratt to discuss the newly formed 'Funding Impact Measurement Working Group' within the CHAOSS community. The panel explores the group's origins, goals, and objectives, emphasizing the importance of mixed method approaches to assess the impact of funding on open source projects. They highlight the significance of both quantitative and qualitative methods to understand the effects of funding better and share insights on creating standardized frameworks for impact assessment. The discussion also touches on the challenges of public versus private funding, the nuances of financial support in open source projects, and the potential benefits of having a collaborative, open forum for related discussions. Hit download now to hear more! [00:02:55] Dawn explains the newly established ‘Funding Impact Measurement Working Group' within the CHAOSS Project including its goals and how often they meet. [00:04:26] Paul describes how the working group was founded after a research paper was written on measuring the impact of public funding on open source and how they presented at Open Forum Academy at Harvard Business School. [00:07:20] Dawn highlights open source funding comes from different sources and more about Microsoft's FOSS Fund and measuring the impact of corporate sponsorship. [00:10:25] Cailean outlines all the core objectives of the working group. [00:13:17] We hear about the working group's first meeting, including members from Digital Infrastructure Insights Fund, and the plan to build a repository of funding models, their effectiveness, and key case studies. [00:15:34] There's a discussion on the challenges in measuring funding impact, which Dawn explains cases where funding has led to community conflicts (some contributors get paid while others remain unpaid). [00:19:45] Cailean talks about the long-term vision for the group which is expanding participation across different funding sources and building open source tools (e.g., Python scripts, Jupyter Notebooks) to support funding impact assessments. [00:21:26] Dawn encourages participation in a working group by contributing in various ways, whether through technical resources, providing insights and experiences related to funding impacts, or simply learning and engaging in discussions. [00:23:42] Paul and Cailean emphasize the need for qualitative research alongside quantitative metrics. Policymakers often seek “hard numbers,” but contextual insights from interviews and case studies are crucial. Value Adds (Picks) of the week: [00:29:12] Cailean's pick is Audrey Tang at RightsCon on her dual meaning of digital in Chinese. [00:30:34] Dawn's pick is Blender for designing 3D models she can print. [00:32:35] Paul's pick is ERROR bug bounty program. [00:33:46] Alice's pick is scrolling for things on eBay like fun sweaters. The Portree Broadcasting Corporation was a pilot for a series that was never commissioned by BBC Scotland - recorded on Skye and produced by myself in 2004, with the object of letting islanders who never meet one another explore their cultures and take o'er the airwaves for one glorious hour of mayhem. It features Gaelic speakers Prof Norman Macdonald and Cailean Maclean plus Shetlander Phil Goodlad and Orcadian Dave Gray. I made myself the cynical newshound sent north from Glasgow to lick the islanders into shape after the Gaels who took over BBC Scotland decided to shift the newsroom to Skye - hence the name, the Portree Broadcasting Corporation. It's a wee bit of history - 20 years ago there were still tolls on the Skye Bridge and the great Dave Gray was wise-cracking as only he knew how. Dave (just retired as Station Manager at Radio Orkney) died suddenly in February 2024. The historian and BBC Skye reporter Prof Norman Macleod died a year earlier in 2023.Happily Phil, Cailean and myself are still going strong. This piece of largely unscripted banter is a tribute to the humorous, un-biddable ways of islanders the world over. ★ Support this podcast ★

Cailean Steed began writing short stories and audio dramas. She won the 2020 Pen to Print Audio Play Award, and decided to go back to school to learn how to tackle a full novel. They ended up taking an idea that had been brewing for years, moving it from a grand teenage story of assassins and conspiracy, and turning it into a thrilling tale of sisterly love. Their novel, 'Home', tells the story of Zoe, trying to rescue her sister from a cult they grew up in, and she managed to escape from.We talk about why Cailean had to swap their entire story around and how that affected each chapter. Also, how they get by dedicating just one day a week to writing. You can hear why Cailean is extremely interested in the way other people see the world, and how much they plotted two timelines, with the same characters, both written in the first person. You can support the show at patreon.com/writersroutine.@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. There’s independent film and then there is under-the-radar film. Independent film has whole sections that you can find on Netflix or iTunes or other streaming and VOD services, but they usually show the most popular movies. But digging deep, one has to go around the internet searching blogs or websites that seem to cover small festivals such as those that are specific to one genre like horror; way beyond Sundance, TIFF, or SXSW. One such film is The Lurking Man, a dark character study. When Cailean, a middle aged divorcee, gets in an accident, her astral presence appears within a bubble of light. Somewhere in the darkness, a foreboding voice tells her that she is in a state between death and life. The voice continues telling her that she is in jeopardy of not only permanently being deceased, but also lost to the void for living a dreadful life. Soon her back story begins to emerge and the foreboding voice’s source lets itself be known. Cailean’s worst fears are indeed the genuine. Directed by Jenn Page, based on a novel by Keith Rommel, and starring Maritza Brikisak and Dan Lench in prominent roles, The Lurking Man played festivals throughout 2017 getting high acclaim. Now available on VOD, Dark Discussions takes a look at this very unique film and gives their thoughts. Your co-hosts are joined by special guest, Dan Lench, as he discusses his role in the film. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM
Cailean and Gary take a deep dive on the music of Cowboy Bebop and it's remarkable composer, Yoko Kanno.
Around this time of year I usually try to put out something with some of the best bits of the year in a compilation. However, given the early birth of our son Cailean, I haven't had time to scour through the stuff I have saved to put that exact show together again this year. So instead, here is what I thought was the best of this year, along with two of the best of ANY year in the Scottish Independence movement. It's not all happy-smiley, but it is all excellent.Hope you enjoy.LINKShttp://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/https://www.facebook.com/TheScottishIndependencePodcasthttps://twitter.com/mgreenwell
Photographer and Gaelic broadcaster Cailean Maclean recalls an encounter with a great skua, or bonxie on St Kilda for Tweet of the Day. Tweet of the Day has captivated the Radio 4 audience with its daily 90 seconds of birdsong. But what of the listener to this avian chorus? In this new series of Tweet of the Day, we bring to the airwaves the conversational voices of those who listen to and are inspired by birds. Building on the previous series, a more informal approach to learning alongside a renewed emphasis on encounter with nature and reflection in our relationship with the natural world. Producer Maggie Ayre.
C. C. and Cailean talk about civil rights, the importance of compromise over tribalism, and two stories about school protests - when they went wrong, and when they went right.
Cailean and Gary talk about the great career of John Hurt, as well as a deep dive on the Tron franchise.
