A relatively recent addition to Medicare, "Medicare Advantage" plans allow private health corporations to get involved with the decision-making process between a patient and their doctor. Given that these profit-driven companies make more short-term money by denying care than by providing it, this turns the promise of the federal Medicare fund on its head. We examine several examples. Then, we look at the history of what is now known as Picher, Oklahoma, and how every step of the way conservative, racist and corporate-friendly policies created possibly the worst ecological and human disaster in the USA. All this and more on TMI for Friday, July 07, 2023 - listen in for YOUR Cure for the Common Media!
Since “In Trust” aired, we've heard more stories about how Native wealth was exploited. Not far from Osage County, citizens of the Quapaw Nation tell eerily similar accounts of unexplained deaths and mismanaged mineral resources. Lead and zinc mining around Picher, Oklahoma, provided bullets for two world wars, but left Native families to restore land that looks more like the surface of the moon than the prairie.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Have we all, every one of us, stared at a small humanlike doll and thought to ourselves, "What would it be like if this doll were like 35+ dudes and I starved them for six months in the University of Minnesota football stadium?" Of course we have; there's no need to even phrase it as a question. A notable fellow of science thought the same thing during World War II, and the results were the Minnesota Starvation Experiments, in which at least one dude just went full raccoon and started wandering around campus at night eating garbage. None of that is made up.Meanwhile in northeastern Oklahoma, the Duke Boys were watching, helpless, as Ole Boss Hogg stole a bunch of American Indian land AGAIN, dug a bafflingly high number of lead mines, abandoned them when they stopped making money, and left countless piles of lead and rock dust hundreds of feet high next to stagnant pools of acidic lead water sitting on top of gigantic underground man-made caverns that were supported only by old boards! Don't worry though—the Dukes never put two and two together to pin it on Boss Hogg, as they'd been severely lead poisoned by the air and water of Picher, Oklahoma, one of our nation's very worst Superfund sites that's uninhabitable to this very day. Ladies and gentlemen, it's Tar Creek, one of the more perfect examples of Oklahoma fellating businesses while said businesses burns the entire state down and puts on a fake nose and big glasses when it's time to foot the cleanup bill! Join us, won't you?
This week was spooky af, as we talked about the oldest working military installation (technically) and the Fort that may have quite literally won the Revolution. That kind of history doesn't come without some spooks, and that's just what you'll get at Fort Mifflin. Afterwards we talked about a *literal* ghost town, a true example of what America's mining boom did to various pop-up towns in good ore country
In keeping with our spooky season theme... what if the actual ground you live on was trying to kill you? This week, we take a look at the Superfund Site of Picher, Oklahoma. This is such a massive head-scratcher with so many unanswered "why's". The people affected by this site and the tribe that purchased it back deserve to have answers as to when it will be cleaned up and taken care of. Is the water clean now? Will people get cancer simply by living there? So many questions.
This week we step outside of the podcast recording studio to reframe a couple of locations we have a lot of history with. We visit two coffee shops — ‘G.N.' and ‘C.' — that we've both spent a lot of time in and are full of memories (not all of them good). How do spaces take root in our minds and become meaning-filled, and how can we reframe places we might have bad associations with so that we can be at home around them? Come on our journey to find out! Then we return to our Women in Business series as Bec talks to Mary Elizabeth Picher, who introduces us to her local child development-focused businesses Wholeplay and The Giving Tree Centre. We get into how the pandemic has shaken up her career, why you need to look at your childhood in order to really heal, and reframing business obstacles.Links:WholeplayThe Giving Tree CentreThe Giving Tree Centre on InstagramWe love hearing from our listeners! This week we are taking another look at “Hell in the Heartland” by Jax Miller. My guest today is Linda Davis, executive director and co-founder of Families Against Narcotics. If you were with us last week, you'll remember that “Hell in the Heartland” tells the almost unbelievable story of murders, missing girls, marijuana, meth, and one amazing mom. If you haven't listened to last week's episode you will definitely want to catch it ASAP! As the time that Ashely Freeman and Lauria Bible had been missing went from days, to weeks, to months, and then to years, Lauria's mother Lorene kept searching for answers. She was always pushing herself to do the next thing that needed done in order to find her child. Eventually, her investigation led her to believe that Danny Freeman's connections to drug dealers set everything in motion. One of the things that is most important to the folks at Families Against Narcotics is their belief that all people are worthy and deserving of being treated respectfully. I believe that Jesus teaches this in Mark chapter 12 verse 31 when he says, “...You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'” Think about how you felt when you were at the lowest point in your life. I know I would be more accepting of help if I felt that I was still seen as having value. If I was treated as someone would want me to treat them if our positions were reversed. Is this where you need to get out of the audience and into the action? When we all work together, we can be unstoppable! She shares her story of moving to a new country for work amid the pandemic, the decision of leaving her family in France and the joy and confort of getting a "built in" community as she joins K9. We talk about embarking on a life change at the mid-century mark of her life, the joy and growth we get from helping others, the first few days in the house, music and the concept of Wabi sabi... Picher, Oklahoma, for those you who don't know, is one of the world's most notorious ghost towns. It's a name uttered in the same breath as Centralia, Pennsylvania or Pripyat, Ukraine. It is a mining town, carved out by its principle industry – a superfund cleanup site with a population approaching zero, as of 2020.... Read More
Oklahoma City noise rock band Chat Pile takes its name from the large piles of waste of early 20th century lead mining in the northeastern Oklahoma town of Picher, which has been called America's most toxic town. The band released a noisy debut EP titled 'This Dungeon Earth' in May 2019, channeling what happened to Picher. In the early 1900s, Picher, Oklahoma was a thriving center for zinc and lead mining, employing upwards of 14,000 people. But, more than a hundred years of unrestricted excavating, mining and waste deposits turned the town into one of the deadliest evacuated and uninhabitable places due to environmental and health risks. Exactly what happened to turn Picher into a modern ghost town? Listen to this week's episode to find out!
