NHL – NHL Draft: Teams weigh risks of selecting Russian prospects The war in Ukraine has added an increasing level of uncertainty for teams looking at Russia-born prospects in this week’s NHL draft. There are fresh questions regarding their availability to play in North America. There is the potential of Russia being shut out in the first round for the first time since 2005. The concerns include when and whether Russian players will be able to travel to play in North America. The draft will be held Thursday and Friday in Montreal. NHL – Agent: Top NHL goalie prospect sent to Russian military base The North American agent for Philadelphia Flyers goaltending prospect Ivan Fedotov says he is at a remote military base in northern Russia. Fedotov vanished last week ahead of a planned move to the U.S. The disappearance of one of the NHL’s top prospects prompted concern for his wellbeing and worry over whether Russians will be willing or able to join teams who draft them this weekend. Russian men can be conscripted between the ages of 18 and 27. Fedotov is 25 and considered one of the top goalies in the world not already playing in the NHL. He was most recently the hockey operations advisor for the New York Rangers. In episode #175 of the Glass and Out podcast, we speak with Tomas Pacina, who up until the day before we recorded this conversation, had been the Head Coach of the Czechia National Women's program for two seasons. Pacina has had an incredibly unique and diverse career that has touched just about every level of hockey. He moved to Calgary, Alberta, in the mid 90s and began coaching midget hockey, while working at a local hockey academy. This led to the opportunity become a Skills Coach for Canada's National Men's Team, which at the time was under the guidance of current Hockey Canada CEO Tom Renney. From there, he joined the New York Rangers as a Skills Coach, becoming one of the first of his position to be hired by an NHL team. He remained with the Rangers until 2004, and later worked with the Florida Panthers and Montreal Canadiens in a similar capacity. From 2011 until 2020, Pacina was a skills coach for the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL, working under the leadership of Mike Johnston for majority of his tenure. In addition to his work in the men's game, Pacina has also making significant inroads in women's hockey. From 2002-2007, he was the Head Coach of the Calgary Oval X-Treme of the NWHL, and led the club to two league Championships. Pacina returned behind the bench of Calgary's professional women's team in 2017, however this time it was for the Calgary Inferno of the CWHL. He was named the league's Coach of the Year. In 2020, he was named Head Coach of the Czech National Women's team and put in charge of developing a competitive program. He helped the program qualify for its first Olympic games and jump up to seventh in world rankings. Hear his process for assisting players in building confidence, the benefits of playing a position-less system, and how to connect with an athlete's human spirit through inspiration.

On this week's episode the topic is expectations and accountability with the emphasis on the fact that change is inevitable, growth optional. Shannon encourage coaches to take a progressive approach, to develop a vision and a strategic plan.  "It's important to encourage, teach, and re-enforce , and extremely important to be positive the majority of the time, to reward good work ethic, good attitude and good intentions."  Shannon's guest is Kristen Hagg is the General Manager of the Calgary Inferno — a professional women’s hockey league of the CWHL.  Kristen previously played for the Inferno before becoming the Assistant General Manager. She is also an attorney.  This week's sidebar topic is stress. Coaching can be stressful;  stress plants the seeds of illness, anxiety, insomnia, weight gain, and increased blood pressure. Coaches need to take care of themselves first to then have the health and energy to take care of others. The Drill of the Week is on Shannon's Facebook page @coachshannonmiller . Episode 116 of TCS kicks off talking about the Clarkson Cup and the Canadian Women's Hockey League. The league has been around for a year now and is doing record business. What do they need to do to reach the next level and really grab hold of the public consciousness? Is there anything they can do? Or is this where it tops out? Later on, the guys take a look at what comes next for the Toronto Maple Leafs as they enter a fascinating 10 game stretch. Matt tells you down to the game which ones the team will get and which ones they'll lose. More importantly, which ones they need and what they can afford to let pass.
