In this episode, Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser—Olympic gold medalist, NHL executive, and emergency medicine physician talks about how her experience as a professional athlete prepared her for the high-stakes world of medicine and how she balances working in emergency medicine with her role with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Takeaways: Balancing two demanding careers—Dr. Wickenheiser manages a full-time role in the NHL while working shifts in emergency medicine. Sports and medicine share common skills, such as teamwork, resilience, and handling high-pressure situations. Transitioning from sports to medicine required discipline and adaptability, traits she developed as a professional athlete. Emergency medicine provides flexibility, allowing her to maintain both her passion for hockey and a career in healthcare. The importance of mentorship and role models, especially for women in both sports and medicine, is crucial to success. We have an active survey going. THE MEDICAL RECORD: NURSES HAVE ADDITIONAL PRESCRIBING POWERS NOW 12-12:30 PM Marissa Lennox is joined by Dr. Alisa Naiman, Family Physician and Founder and Medical Director of The Medical Station in Toronto, Dr. Malcolm Moore, Medical Oncologist, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and Dr. Fahad Razak, General Internist at Unity Health Toronto. Ontario registered nurses will now be able to independently prescribe medications including birth control and topical antibiotics. It's all part of a strategy by the province for patients to get certain prescriptions faster. The Ontario Medical Association (OMA), however, believes that this is the wrong approach because it won't give patients “the comprehensive care that a primary care physician offers”. Do our panelists agree? Meanwhile, according to leaked documents that were made public by the Alberta NDP, the Alberta government under Premier Danielle Smith plans to make big changes to its healthcare system including dismantling its province wide healthcare provider and potentially selling off its continuing care facilities. But why? An official announcement by Alberta's government is expected to come out today on that. And, a new study led by Canadian researchers shows us that one third of the world's population may be at high risk of smart phone addiction. So what are the negative health implications of that? And, finally, our panel reacts to a study about the connection between our sleeping habits and cardiovascular health. IT'S LUNG CANCER AWARENESS MONTH 12:30-1 PM Marissa Lennox is now joined by Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser, Legendary former Canadian hockey player who won five Olympic medals with Canada women's national ice hockey team. Hayley retired from hockey in 2017 and the IOC in 2022. She is currently serving as the Assistant General Manager of Player Development for the Toronto Maple Leafs and is a practicing Family and Emergency medicine doctor. It's Lung Cancer Awareness Month. To mark the occasion, Dr. Wickenheiser has partnered with the Be the MVP – Change the Odds campaign aims to empower Canadians to take charge of their own health by increasing their awareness of lung cancer, including the related risk factors, signs and symptoms, and the importance of early detection. In this special one-on-one conversation with Marissa, Dr. Wickenheiser details what the campaign is all about, how meaningful of an experience it has been for Hayley to be a part of this wonderful initiative and why early detection of lung cancer is so important. If you have questions or a personal lung cancer story that you want to share, call now and join the conversation.
In the podcast, Don Aldrich and Katie Wickenheiser talk about their experience with the Garden Spot Village Wisdom Course. The following tips offer an insight into their journey of intergenerational connection: https://gsc.gl/Episode28

Hayley Wickenheiser is widely considered one of the greatest female hockey players of all time. She's the longest-serving member of Canada's national team with seven World Championships and four Olympic gold medals to her name. But before becoming Canada's women's all-time leader in international goals, assists and points, Wickenheiser was told hockey was for boys. She was rejected for teams, bullied on the ice and kicked off of teams solely on the basis of sex. Join us this week as we tell Wickenheiser's incredible story. Hosted on Acast. The crosstown Mets are on top of the NL East, looking to hold off the Braves and take the franchise’s first division title since 2015. The postseason picture is quite crowded, thanks to the addition of a third wild card in each league. Cincinnati Reds ace Luis Castillo, Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras and Washington Nationals slugger Juan Soto are the names to watch ahead of next month’s trade deadline. MLB – MLB All-Star Game wins night but draws record low ratings Major League Baseball’s Midsummer Classic remains the most-watched all-star game in professional sports, even though it drew record lows in viewership for the fifth time since 2015. The game in Los Angeles averaged 7.51 million viewers on Fox, a decline of 9.7% from last year’s contest in Colorado. The audience peaked at 8.24 million between 9:15 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. EDT. The game was the most-watched program on television on Tuesday night and outdrew the other three all-star games that were played in February. The NFL’s Pro Bowl averaged 6.69 million on ABC, followed by the NBA and NHL all-star games. After a timeout, Breanna Stewart made a driving layup with 10.7 seconds left to pull Seattle within three points, but Copper went 1 for 2 from the free-throw line at the other end. Copper finished with 11 points and eight rebounds for Chicago. Stewart led Seattle with 24 points. Tonight Indiana Fever at Las Vegas Aces, 10:00 p.m. WNBA – Rapinoe, King urge freedom for Brittney Griner at The ESPYS Detained WNBA star Brittney Griner was front and center at The ESPYS. Soccer star Megan Rapinoe admonished her fellow athletes for not doing enough to speak out while also encouraging them to support Griner. Griner was arrested in Russia in February after customs officials found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage. She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. NBA Finals MVP and show host Stephen Curry joined WNBA players Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins-Smith in calling attention to Griner’s plight. Big Ten – Newsom wants explanation from UCLA about move to Big Ten California Gov. Gavin Newsom is demanding an explanation from UCLA officials about their move to the Big Ten Conference. Newsom attended Wednesday’s UC Board of Regents meeting in San Francisco. The closed-door meeting was the first since UCLA and Southern California announced on June 30 that the schools would be leaving the Pac-12 Conference for the Big Ten in 2024. USC is a private institution and not part of the UC system. Newsom — an ex officio member of the Board of Regents — is among others asking how the move will benefit all student-athletes, as well as how to mitigate the financial effects it will cause to UC Berkeley, California’s other public university in the Pac 12. NBA – AP source: Harden, 76ers agree on 2-year, $68 million deal James Harden has agreed to terms on a two-year contract to stay with the Philadelphia 76ers and will make about $14.5 million less this coming season than he could have earned under his previous deal, a person with knowledge of the negotiations said Wednesday. Harden will sign a deal worth slightly over $68 million, paying him about $33 million this season and with a $35 million player option for the 2023-24 season, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the deal. NBA – Hornets’ Bridges pleads not guilty to domestic violence Prosecutors say Charlotte Hornets forward Miles Bridges has pleaded not guilty in Los Angeles to felony domestic violence charges after being accused of assaulting his girlfriend in front of their two children last month. The LA County district attorney says his office filed one felony count of injuring a child’s parent and two felony counts of child abuse under circumstances or conditions likely to cause great bodily injury or death. Bridges was arrested on June 29 by Los Angeles police and later released on $130,000 bond. NHL – Five women in NHL assistant GM jobs took different paths The five women who currently hold assistant general manager jobs around the NHL each took very different paths to the position. Vancouver’s Cammi Granato and Toronto’s Hayley Wickenheiser were Hall of Fame players. Wickenheiser got a medical degree while working in hockey. Granato did some broadcasting and scouting along the way. Émilie Castonguay was an NHLPA-certified agent for several years before joining the Canucks. Meghan Hunter worked her way up through the Chicago Blackhawks organization. And New Jersey’s Kate Madigan spent time as an accountant before switching careers to go into hockey. NCAA – Transfer portal windows endorsed for final NCAA approval Division I college football players would have two periods of time to enter the transfer portal and be immediately eligible to play if a proposed rule change gets final approval. The Division I Council endorsed several of the Transformation Committee’s initial proposals and passed them on to the D-I Board for approval. The council also moved along recommendations for expanding the benefits schools can provide athletes and concepts to improve the infractions process. Transfer portal entry windows would be set on a sport-by-sport basis. For football, there would be a 45 day-window starting in mid-December and another 15-day window that begins May 1. NCAA – Report: NCAA makes progress on gender inequality at tourneys The NCAA has adequately addressed nine of 23 recommendations for creating comparable NCAA Tournament experiences for men’s and women’s basketball players. That’s according to a progress report from a third party hired by the NCAA. A scathing report issued almost a year ago criticized the NCAA for the differences in how the men’s and women’s tournaments were administered and conducted. Among the most visible changes were “March Madness” branding and increased cross-promotion for both tournaments in 2022 and a “First Four” event for women to bring it into line with the men’s tournament. NCAA – ACC looking for ways to boost revenue, shrink financial gap Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner Jim Phillips says the league is looking for ways to boost its revenue and shrink a rising financial gap with leagues like the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference. That growing gap is stirring uncertainty about the league’s long-term future. Speaking Wednesday at the league’s preseason football media days, Phillips says “all options are on the table” and that the league is having regular conversations with ESPN on possible ways to enhance its TV deal through 2036. The league reported record revenues and distributed $36.1 million to member schools for the 2020-21 season. But the numbers lagged behind the Big Ten and SEC, leagues that are making aggressive expansion moves for future years. Golf – Stenson joins Saudi tour, removed as Ryder Cup captain Henrik Stenson is out as Ryder Cup captain for Europe. The European tour says decisions for his personal life go against the contract he signed to be captain four months ago. In the middle of it all is the Saudi-funded LIV Golf series. Stenson confirmed that he has agreed to play for LIV Golf. It’s a direct challenge to the European tour and Stenson effectively had to choose between being the Ryder Cup captain or taking guaranteed cash from a Saudi-funded league. Europe is now looking for a new captain.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Canadian Women's Hockey Player & 2022 Beijing Gold Medalist Sarah Nurse joined OverDrive today and got into a number of things including the feeling of winning Gold, breaking Hayley Wickenheiser's point record, playing alongside Marie-Philip Poulin & much more!
The Director of Film and Scouting for Elite Prospects, Cam Robinson joined Matt and Blake to talk prospects. Talked about Rangers prospects. Dove into what Braden Schneider brings. Thinks that Rangers wouldn’t want to give him up unless the package is right. Talked about Nils Lundkvist. Thinks that K’Andre Miller would be more attainable than Schneider. Talked about some of the Ranger forwards. Doesn’t see the Bruins being in contention for JT Miller. Scott Rintoul, our Thursday regular joined to talk about a variety of different things in the world of sports. Started off with the Gold Medal game and what he saw. Still basking in the glow. They never fail to deliver and neither doe Marie-Philip Poulin. Says we underserve her by calling her clutch. She has passed that. She is automatic. Scotty answered the poll question on who is the best women’s player in Canadian history. Talked about which player the Canucks should move out if they need cap space. Thinks it is JT Miller. You move him because he can get you the most now. If teams don’t hit JR’s price than you just keep him. Sees a world where Garland gets traded but doesn’t see it. You can’t evaluate him, simply from the bottom line. He is a feel the moment kind of guy. Talked about going to full capacity. Talked about UBC and SFU playing a game every year. Olympic Gold medalist and Broadcaster, Cheryl Pounder joined Matt and Blake to sum up the gold medal match from last night. They showcased women’s hockey and again, it came down to the wire. Says she was glad there was plexiglass between her and Mudryk as she gets excited and the old Pounder elbow came out a few times. Talked about the gold medal performance. Thought the Americans came out strong and she thought ‘oh boy’. This Canadian team has showed so much resilience. There isn’t one word that can do it justice. They have that certain something that relates to likeness and chemistry. They knew whatever was thrown at them they could weather. Talked about MPP. We have never seen anyone as great as her. She does whatever needs to be done. Lead the tournament in slot passes. Says she is the best that ever played. Tough for Cheryl to say because she has played with Wickenheiser. Can’t see MPP calling it a career yet. Doesn’t see her retiring in the next 4 years. She has matured a lot in the last cycle. The pandemic hit the women hard. Talked about the U18 tournament and how great it is for the game.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

(Adrian Wyld/THE CANADIAN PRESS) In the October general election in Canada, the Liberals under Justin Trudeau were re-elected, but this time in a minority government situation and one in which they were virtually eliminated in the four provinces west of Ontario. Very few Liberals were elected in Manitoba and British Columbia, and none at all in Saskatchewan and Alberta. With a resurrection of the separatist Bloc Quebecois in Quebec, this has left the country deeply divided. Levon discussed the nomination of former Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland to the posts of deputy Prime Minister and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister. Originally from Alberta her job will be to try to restore some unity to the country (original story here) Hong Kong protests: a former Canadian diplomat's viewpoint Police and student protesters clash at Hong Kong University this week (via CBC) The protests in Hong Kong have quieted somewhat and at last report, only a few students remain barricaded in Hong Kong university after a tense week of violent clashes with police once again. While the situation has calmed somewhat it is doubtful they will remain that way, or that the protests are anywhere close to ending. Colin Robertson is a former Canadian Consul in Hong Kong and he says there seems to be a standoff as protesters are making demands that the Hong Kong government, and certainly China, are unwilling to compromise on. In a conversation with Marc, he expresses concern that this will not end well for anybody.
