Dyami Starks is one of the Midwest's premier basketball trainers. His approach to training combines professional-level insights with data-driven development strategies. Starks also serves as the player development coach for All Iowa Attack, the director of Starks Elite AAU program, and as an assistant women's basketball coach at The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota.Dyami was a Division I standout at Bryant University and enjoyed a professional career that included stops in Australia, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Latvia. On this episode Mike and Dyami discuss his unique training philosophy, which emphasizes the importance of fostering a player's intrinsic understanding of the game through inquiry and self-discovery rather than rote instruction. Dyami articulates the necessity of adapting training methodologies to suit individual players, highlighting that player development is predicated on providing clarity and establishing a rapport that encourages confidence and growth. Moreover, we explore the evolving landscape of basketball recruiting, particularly in light of the recent changes brought about by the introduction of NIL and the transfer portal, which have significantly altered the dynamics for high school athletes. Throughout our conversation, Starks underscores the essence of cultivating a love for the game, encouraging young players to embrace the journey of growth and improvement while navigating the challenges that lie ahead.Follow us on Twitter and Instagram @hoopheadspod for the latest updates on episodes, guests, and events from the Hoop Heads Pod.Make sure you're subscribed to the Hoop Heads Pod on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts and while you're there please leave us a 5 star rating and review. Heading into the season, the Knicks plan for the backup power forward position appears to be to stagger the minutes of Josh Hart and RJ Barrett at that position. But if you take a look around the league, a number of key free agents are available that could help fill that position of need for the New York Knicks. One of those free agents actually used to be a former first round pick for the Knicks. We also look at the New York Knicks hiring a former Milwaukee Bucks player development coach. JJ Outlaw's father, John,  followed an unconventional path in pro sports, playing in the NFL before coaching in the NBA. Two decades later, his son followed in John's footsteps. JJ was equally adept as a baller and a football player, but decided to focus on the latter when he went to Villanova. During his four-year career with the Wildcats, JJ was a three-time All-Atlantic 10 selection and ranked fifth in school history in receptions and ninth in receiving yards. As a senior in 2005, he led the Atlantic 10 in receptions per game, ranked third in all-purpose yards, and was sixth in the league in receiving yards per game.JJ's stellar college career earned him a roster spot with the Philadelphia Eagles. When his football career ended, he became Director of Basketball Operations for Marist University, where he spent two seasons before being recruited by LA Lakers head coach Mike Brown as the team's video coordinator. JJ soon worked his way into the role of Player Development Coach with the Lakers, and went on to serve as assistant coach of the Memphis Grizzlies for two years (which included a brief stint as head coach). In August 2019, the Cleveland Cavaliers hired JJ to be their assistant coach. In this episode, JJ shares: How only one other person understands his unconventional career path: his fatherWhy being around NBA players and coaches inspired him to shoot for the starsWhat was the hardest thing about going from a pro football player to an entry-level college basketball roleWho mentored him on his NBA coaching journeyWhy he feels blessed every single dayKeep up with JJ via his Instagram feed.

In episode #175 of the Glass and Out podcast, we speak with Tomas Pacina, who up until the day before we recorded this conversation, had been the Head Coach of the Czechia National Women's program for two seasons. Pacina has had an incredibly unique and diverse career that has touched just about every level of hockey. He moved to Calgary, Alberta, in the mid 90s and began coaching midget hockey, while working at a local hockey academy. This led to the opportunity become a Skills Coach for Canada's National Men's Team, which at the time was under the guidance of current Hockey Canada CEO Tom Renney. From there, he joined the New York Rangers as a Skills Coach, becoming one of the first of his position to be hired by an NHL team. He remained with the Rangers until 2004, and later worked with the Florida Panthers and Montreal Canadiens in a similar capacity. From 2011 until 2020, Pacina was a skills coach for the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL, working under the leadership of Mike Johnston for majority of his tenure. In addition to his work in the men's game, Pacina has also making significant inroads in women's hockey. From 2002-2007, he was the Head Coach of the Calgary Oval X-Treme of the NWHL, and led the club to two league Championships. Pacina returned behind the bench of Calgary's professional women's team in 2017, however this time it was for the Calgary Inferno of the CWHL. He was named the league's Coach of the Year. In 2020, he was named Head Coach of the Czech National Women's team and put in charge of developing a competitive program. He helped the program qualify for its first Olympic games and jump up to seventh in world rankings. Hear his process for assisting players in building confidence, the benefits of playing a position-less system, and how to connect with an athlete's human spirit through inspiration.
