The Big 12 and ACC Tournaments kick off on Tuesday with early round matchups. Kansas isn't in action, but if they were, they'd be playing without Kevin McCullar or Hunter Dickinson as Bill Self announced on Monday. What can an already thin Jayhawks' bench do without two of their stars? Can Houston double-up with a regular season AND conference tournament championship in year one in the Big 12? Could Texas make a run?On the ACC side, many people would like to see UNC vs. Duke, round 3. But who can spoil that party? Clemson and PJ Hall? Can Virginia's offense score just enough to keep them in it? Turning to the Big East, it's hard to envision a path where UConn isn't playing in the Championship. Your favorite little sports podcast host is back on the scene after a week layoff. I'm excited to present my viewpoint on all of the latest happenings in sports. On deck: (2:47) As the podcast took a respite last week, I'll get into my quick sojourn visiting the charm of Paris and the rich history of Rome. The most perfect weather a vacation could ever have, the sights, landmarks, etc. as I enjoyed seven days outside of the States. (5:21) We're onto the American League & National League Championship Series as we're closer to the Fall Classic in baseball. I'll take a big picture view at first to discuss is it the layoff or schedule that's affected the 100 win teams (i.e. Orioles, Dodgers & Braves) as they had early exits in the Division Series? I'll talk about Game 1 in the ALCS as the Rangers draw first blood vs. the Astros. Can Houston rebound at home where they've been subpar all year? Then I'll breakdown the NLCS between Diamondbacks vs. Phillies. Are the D-backs game to pull off another upset? Or are the Fightin' Phils destined to get back to the World Series? In other news, history could possibly be made in San Francisco as they've interviewed Alyssa Nakken, who is on the Giants coaching staff, to be the manager in what would be a first in North American sports. (29:23) The last two undefeated teams in the NFL (i.e. 49ers & Eagles) were upended over the course of a three hour time span. San Francisco loses at Cleveland behind QB Brock Purdy's worst performance as a pro. Later, the Jet defense rose to the occasion forcing the Eagles into four turnovers in an upset 20-14 win. I'll share my disdain for the NFL pondering a Super Bowl to be played in London somewhere in the distant future. One that I'm not in favor of, so you won't want to miss that. Week 6 was a lame one, if you ask me as this season hasn't been compelling or riveting, to say the least. (45:53) Don't look now, but there's a team in the PAC-12 that making waves toward the top of the rankings in the nation as the Washington Huskies won a wild game vs. Oregon on Saturday. Are they college football final four material? I'll delve into the landscape of the sport as they're at the halfway point of the season, with teams jockeying for position to see if they'll be a part of the playoff mix come New Year's Eve. (50:54) Hockey fans, the NHL season has arrived. For my over/under point totals, please check the YouTube channel linked below. Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews has gotten off to a torrid start as he's done something only four other players have ever achieved in the history of the sport. (53:29) The Association (aka NBA) tips off a week from tomorrow. James Harden is still in Philadelphia. Please wake me up if he's been traded to another team before the season begins because I can't hack this soap opera anymore. Plus, the Celtics hire a former coach and analyst (Jeff Van Gundy) to become a consultant and the Bucks look midseason ready with the dynamic duo of Dame & Giannis, drawing rave reviews by the team and throughout the league. What were the big takeaways from Houston's initial performance? Meanwhile, the Texans are fiercely preparing for a difficult road game in Denver against the Broncos. The thrilling NLCS between the Astros and Phillies concludes with yet another wild one. A fourth straight extra-inning game?! Sounds preposterous, but only fitting for this dogfight of a series. Houston sends their horse, Nolan Ryan (11 - 10 3.35 ERA in 233 IP), to the mound with a trip to the World Series on the line. Philadelphia curiously counters with 22 year old rookie Marty Bystrom (5 - 0 1.50 ERA in 36 IP), who has yet to take a loss this year but is making just his sixth career start in the Majors. Will this choice pay off for manager Dallas Green? Can Houston rebound after a heartbreaking loss in game 4? Tune in for a fantastic finish to this tremendously entertaining series. Kevin starts the episode by breaking down all of the Gold Glove nominees. He gives his thoughts on each position group and who is poised to take home the hardware for the 2021 season. Kevin then discusses World Series games 3, 4, and 5. Atlanta has pushed Houston to the brink of elimination by winning games 3 and 4. The pitching for Atlanta has been extremely impressive as they almost threw a no-hitter in game 4 of this series. Houston was able to stave off elimination once already in game 5 as their bats came back to life. Kevin wraps up the show by previewing game 6 as well as a potential deciding game 7. Atlanta's rotation is set up nicely with Max Fried going on full rest in game 6 and Ian Anderson slated for a potential game 7. Houston, on the other hand, will have starters going on short rest and a full hands-on-deck approach to the pitching staff the rest of the way. Can Houston complete the comeback or will Atlanta win their first title since 2005? If there's any city in the world to spend just 12 hours in, Los Angeles is right up there. The urban can be intimidating, but with limited time we went straight to the beach ... Venice Beach to be precise. It was going to be a Gilly type of weekend, so naturally we had to find ourselves a pub or two that served this Legendary Lager. Our server Slater at the Whaler was kind enough to give us good tasting notes before we got our first pitcher, and man ... there's just something about this Legendary Lager that hits just right. Crisp, bold, legendary. Flash forward 4 hours later ...Tyler's shoulders are completely sunburned, and we are in the Uber to SoFi stadium. The fact that we were blessed to be the first fans to witness live sport in this stadium was truly remarkable. I'm not sure why, but I feel like I'll be an 80 year old man telling anyone who will listen about (cue the old man voice ...) "back in '21 .... my friend Tyler and I headed to LA to watch those Legendary Giltinis christen SoFi stadium ... you know they used to call is SoFi back then ?! ..." There's just something about the way it's designed that makes your jaw drop. Once we got in, we had no choice but to get our hands on some Gilly merch. The all white bucket hat will be a staple of my summer attire, and we can't thank the Gilly's Girls enough. They ramped up the energy in the stadium throughout the night, and brought the true passion needed to properly rep the brand. They rugby was great, and if the rugby traditionalists are going to whinge about the football lines, they can eat it. For all the shit that Gilly has copped from the American rugby audience since he purchased the two franchises, let's remember this .... He's creating access for new rugby fans. Ticket giveaways and the lure of enjoying a match in places like the Coliseum and Sofi create buzz. Random people end up at the games who would have never thought to if they weren't prompted (just listen to the audio podcast, we interviewed at least 4 different groups of people who were enjoying their first ever rugby match). He's bringing in legit overseas talent. This is the part where some people would prefer to see more Americans play. But the high bar of talent helps raise the overall level of play, and a rising tide lifts all boats (oh and Sir William Meakes is an absolute gun). He's bankrolling multiple academy sides in L.A. & Austin. I would bet my money that both of these cities produce numerous new eagles over the next decade. The coaches that have come from Australia will help speed up the development of American coaches in L.A. and Austin. It's the rapidity of developing grassroots rugby in these areas that excites me. When the USA secure the 2031 Rugby World Cup hosting bid (yes that's right I said WHEN not IF), ol' Gilly will be a major reason why it happened. So you whingers can thank him then! Back to the boots on the ground adventure .... How could we not mention our legendary halftime interview with Ben Affleck's white whale .... the one and only Nivine Jay. Even though the score line at the final whistle made it look close, it was all Giltinis all night. The Gilly Experience was truly one to remember. Tyler and I ended up walking back from SoFi to LAX (yes, it was a dumb idea and took way too long so eventually we had to jog ... which wasn't pleasant), and got to our gate just in time to hop on the flight back to Denver. Special thanks to Tyler Grant for saying yes to dumb ideas! Next stop on the Rugby PickEm Boots on the Ground tour of 2021 is the Texas Cup on June 5th. Can Houston snatch back the cup at home? Will Rugby PickEm regular caller (720-259-8825) Frankie Ruggs from Houston be in attendance? Will Gilly himself make an appearance? Stay tuned. PICKEM!

Arkansas had an unbelievable season led by the Muss Bus. Could the Razorbacks return all of their players and make another run at it next season? Meanwhile, the Bears look destined to meet the Zags in the Championship. Who exactly is Baylor's best player? We wrap things up with an update on the Women's Tournament (54:52). Monday's game of the night was on the women's side. The UConn-Baylor game was electric but ended with a controversial no-call. Should Texas take a look at Baylor coach Kim Mulkey? Rico thinks so.
