James Bond 007: Roleplaying In Her Majesty's Secret Service was designed by Gerard Christopher Klug (known as Chris Klug these days) with development by Greg Gordon and Neil Randall, and was released by Victory Games between 1983 and 1987, selling over 100,000 copies. It is long out of print but available on the second-hand market at reasonable prices (as I write Noble Knight lists it at under $15 for the core rules) though the supplements are usually 200-500% more. This episode was made possible by our patron and friend Christian Bickle, who chose the game for us to cover. Huge thanks go out to him for letting us create a really fun episode. Chris Klug is a developer badass-as-a-service that either creates or solves problems depending on who you ask. He loves creating and building things. Whether it be a new application, a new kitchen or a new RC helicopter, you will see him building things all the time. Most of the time, that means writing code and solving problems for clients at a company called Active Solution in Stockholm though. Except for the many days he spends at conferences and usergroups, talking about doing things he is passionate about, and for the days he goes mountain biking, IPSC shooting, kiteboarding or RC helicopter flying. For the last 15-something years, he has been solving problems for customers, and loving it. But if he gets to choose, he'll go to the beach and kitesurf every day! A conversation with Joel Gratz, Chief Powder Finder and Meteorology Startup Founder. After realizing that forecasting snow in the big mountains was very difficult, and missing one to many powder days due to inaccurate forecasts, Joel studied the mountain weather patterns of Colorado and started sharing forecasts via Colorado Powder Forecast, eventually to create OpenSnow.com, with over 1.5 million skiers and riders relying on it today. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This episode is presented by Chris Klug, owner of Klug Properties. Download Episode INTRO This time we are looking at James Bond 007, a game we didn’t play back in the day, but the GROGSQUAD suggested that we should give it the once over. We had a great review from Mike Hobbs from Meeples and Miniatures POTTED HISTORY 03:43 This is the story of Chris Klug realising … Continue reading "Episode 15 – James Bond 007 RPG"
James Bond RPG came out a very long time ago and, even though no longer published or popular, it is a very relevant game today. It is interesting that some games that have been out of print for a long time can, and indeed have some ideas that a vast amount of more modern games could learn from. Perhaps having ideas was easier all those years ago. Or simply the industry was more audacious than today. Or we pander to the “easy design” a bit too much. I don’t know. But the fact remains that when one reads Chris Klug’s James Bond RPG, it is not easy to find a spy game that fits so well both to the genre and the IP. It was thus an honour to have Chris on the show to talk about dilemmas in RPGs and the extent of their importance. This one, my friends, I can say is one of the good episodes. Enjoy!
