It was on my heart today as I prayed about this episode. My life isn't perfect, I have had loss and frustrations throughout the year but I haven't had a hard year. And it can be easy to forget, that in the midst of my joy, there are hurting people that don't even want to celebrate Christmas this year. The response was a bit overwhelming. First thank you to all who shared. I so appreciate your vulnerability and I hope that you can receive some encouragement this season. So I wanted to just give you a few things to help you get through this season and remember to bring it back to the REAL reason for the season :) Jesus! So my encouragement to you is that you give your hurt and pain to Him. That you lay it down at the cross and surrender to Him. Let Him heal your heart because He doesn't want you stuck in the same pain year after year. And this season is a joyous occasion of Jesus' birth. Celebrating the savior of the world and all that that means. Some practical things to help you through this season(whether it is good or not so good)Set some awesome goals- Small, big and something you honestly don't think could happen- Focus on the possibilities of the future and what God holds in front of you!Be in tune with your body.- cycle syncing- are you on your period or near it? Make sure to give yourself the proper rest during the times you need it!Find ways to bring tradition into your home and remembrance of those who you've lost during this seasonAND So some quick ways to help keep Jesus the focus of this year. Give God a gift- serving, forgiving, loving those who aren't easy to loveMake a Christmas Gratitude list!Attend church on Christmas(or Christmas eve)Before unwrapping presents read the story of Jesus' birth(Luke 1-2) and start the day with prayerI pray that no matter what 2023 has brought you that you will feel closer to God, more confident in who you are as his daughter and excited for the possibilities of your future! Hello Friend!!!! Thanks for being here today! If you want your life and holiday to be simpler, you have to learn how to do that so that when unexpected things happen in your schedule, it doesn't throw you off! I just want to share a few tips of how we keep our Christmas simple. We had an experience many years ago, that made us really make changes in how we did Christmas. We love going to church on Christmas Eve since this whole season is about celebrating the birth of Jesus and we want our kids to know that Jesus is the Reason for this season. It always felt like we had to rush here and rush there and we weren't really enjoying it because it was so chaotic. We now can really enjoy Christmas with the focus being on Christ and having one less place to travel simplified the whole holiday. We still see those family members for Christmas, we just do it on a different day, so it works out perfect! We also simplified our schedules to keeping our time sacred and trying not to overplan activities. We used to host all kinds of gatherings from cookie exchanges to ugly sweater parties and we have reduced our activities so we can just enjoy the calm of the season because planning for all the activities along with everything else there is to do in about 4 weeks can be very exhausting and overwhelming. We have also simplified gift giving. We really only buy for Grandkids, make gifts for friends and then our gift to the family is renting a place for all the kids and grandkids every year usually in February or March, so that is another great way to make even more memories when there is less to do when the temperatures are so cold here! People and Kids will forget the gifts you give them, but they will remember the memories made! Another area we simplified on Christmas was to have soups or chillis ready in crockpots and dips and snack foods mostly prepared ahead of time when all the kids and grandkids are here, so nobody was having to spend the whole time in the kitchen. Having foods ready makes the whole experience relaxed and fun so you can spend treasured time together!!!! We play games and laugh alot! Kids have a blast with all their cousins and it just makes for a fantastic time! I hope you have taken a few of these tips that you can implement into your busy season to enjoy slow living and being intentional with your time. Send me an email and let me know what your plan is this year! I would love to hear it! I'm choosing not to be the Grinch that stole Christmas this year. And it would be best if you weren't that way, either. Did you know that your joy, smile, and energy affect the world around you? When you are self-aware about how you influence the world with your happiness, your smile, your quick walk, and the way you hold your body, you can change the things around you and influence who you are. So I'm not going to be the Grinch about Christmas; I'm going to be the joy, the happiness, the reason that Christmas is even here. And so, how about joining me on that journey and being the most influential person you know by presenting joy, love, and happiness in a heartfelt, healthy way and loving everyone around you? I love you. I'm Dan Clark. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/daniel-c-clark/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/daniel-c-clark/support

Most families are going to have the tightest budget they have ever had this Christmas, including myself. Interest rate rises, inflation and the cost of food is really eating into our budgets and Christmas has a new perspective. However even though it will be more grounded, humble and quite possibly more simple, it doesn't mean that we have to skip the fun this Christmas or it be any less special. In fact, I think this tightening of budgets will give us a much needed reset and refresh of what the festive season is really about, which is connection, gratitude and time. So in today's podcast, I share with you ALL the hacks to help keep you credit card debt free, and thriving on all levels with the most joyful festive season, filled with love, memories and meaningful moments. Presence, not presents. When the Steven's family unexpectedly found themselves in the midst of a health crisis, meeting their normal holiday expectations was overwhelming. When they dialed back the gift giving and celebration one Christmas, Katy discovered something amazing. The absence of the pressure was good for her soul. In fact, she absolutely hates alcohol or drinking, and she has never had a single drink in her entire life. This is mostly because her own dad was an alcoholic, and so, she happens to believe it's incredibly “childish” if someone cannot “have fun without drinking.” Well, this year she's going to be having Christmas at her house, and she figured she would tell her in-laws they can't drink. “This year I'm hosting Christmas for a change I decided since it's at my house no alcohol allowed we are all getting older and it's time to grow up,” she explained. “My husbands sister called to ask what she could bring. She saw a recipe for a Christmas martini that she wanted to bring. I told her about my no alcohol rule. She didn't say much but must have told the rest of the family. Some of them started texting me asking me if I was serious and saying that it is lame. But I'm not budging.” “Now it turns out my husbands sister is hosting an alternate gathering that almost everyone is choosing to go to instead. It's so disrespectful all because they would have to spend one day sober.” Her husband's sister has extended an invitation to both of them to come to her Christmas party, and this is what her husband wants to do; go to his sister's house instead of letting her host Christmas this year. Her husband wants her to go to his sister's too, and stop creating problems with his family. She's refusing to attend, because she can't get over how disrespectful she feels it is of his sister to throw her own party that includes alcohol. We're in the midpoint of our Untraditional Traditions series, and we want to ask all of you listeners to consider something; what kind of Christmas do you want or need this year? Maybe it's a riotous, celebratory Christmas with tons of gatherings and activities, a frenzy of lights and shopping and cooking and more. But perhaps some of us might be feeling a bit tethered to the way we've always done it—and the notion of a calm Christmas sounds nothing short of divine (and kudos to you all who have found the joy of this already). Perhaps you feel like you don't really have a choice as to what kind of Christmas you have, as you've been the “keeper of Christmas” for your family and friends for so long, but our guest this week is here to tell us otherwise. Beth Kempton is a writer, a mother and has been obsessed with Christmas since she was a little girl. After one particularly stressful Christmas when her children were small (and she and her husband decided that neither of them really liked turkey) Beth began to realize that Christmas could be what she wanted it to be (sans turkey, for one!), and she started spreading that message—namely through her book “Calm Christmas and a Happy New Year.” She and Jen talk through the 5 “stories” of Christmas and which one they identify with most, they discuss when Christmas is hard and how to help yourself and others when that's the case, and the comfort and joy of letting yourself be free of anyone else's Christmas expectations and choosing the kind of season that is nurturing instead of draining. * * * Thank you to our sponsors! The impact on our mental health can be enormous.” - Beth Kempton “Isn't it interesting that you turn to the symbols of Christmas–the tree, the lights, whatever–as comfort in a really difficult time? And I know it's up to everyone when they put the tree up, but I'm totally the same. If that brings you joy, why not extend it as much as you can?” - Beth Kempton “When we find the quiet, it's so much easier to connect with the wisdom that we already hold and often don't even realize. I think somehow our heart is way ahead of our mind in terms of what we know, what we need to know.” - Beth Kempton “One of the things that I was really shocked by was how many people that I spoke to–I would say more than 80%--had a very sad story connected with Christmas in some way.” - Beth Kempton Guest's Links Beth's Website Beth's Instagram Beth's Facebook Beth Kempton's podcast The Way of the Fearless Writer: Ancient Eastern wisdom for a flourishing writing life Resources Mentioned in This Episode Book: Calm Christmas and a Happy New Year by Beth Kempton Book: The Way of the Fearless Writer by Beth Kempton Connect with Jen!Jen's website Jen's Instagram Jen's Twitter Jen's Facebook Jen's YouTube

Hello Mama who may have had her share of disappointing Christmases…Welcome to the 3rd episode in a series called Cultivating Christmas Calm – How to Have a Holiday Season You Actually Enjoy. You might want to go back and listen to Episode 6 and 7 – two under 15-minute episodes that will help you navigate a calmer and happier holiday season. I'm the mom who worked way too hard to make everyone in my family's Christmas wishes come true. Anybody else? In a nutshellI bought way too many gifts and collapsed into bed at about 4 am Christmas morning. I did “all the things” – class parties, baking, baked for them, assemblies, services, events, and activities.I bedecked every inch of my home. I loved most of it. The problem was I believed if I didn't do it all, Christmas would be disappointing, to me or someone I loved. As a result, Christmas was exhausting and depleting. And no matter what lengths I went to, Christmas was disappointing to someone. In previous episodes, I've asked questions to help you determine your highest holiday priorities. And hopefully you've discovered the one word that can make this your happiest holiday season yet – NO! I want to return to the topic of disappointment. Often our disappointments in life are based on dashed expectations. We have something in mind, and we may not even know it. But when our reality doesn't match up with that picture in our minds, we feel disappointed. I'd like to suggest a few things you can do this Christmas to manage expectations so they don't lead to disappointment. 1. Make a plan for gift-giving. Adopt a Gift Rule for your kids…and spouse. Determine a budget.Opt for a family gift exchange. A gift-giving plan means you, your kids, spouse, and other family members have clear expectations of what they're getting for Christmas. It helps you with decision-making. And it keeps gift-giving from spiraling out of control. 2. Another idea for managing expectations and avoiding disappointment is to have a little Celebrating the Holidays family meeting. Keep this meeting to 15 to 30 minutes at the most. Invite each family member to talk about what Christmas celebrations and activities matter most to them.Write down (on a calendar ideally) one activity, event, tradition for each person. 3. Don't forget the Reason for the Season. Have an Advent Wreath Give each child a Jesus-themed Advent Calendar Choose an Advent Family Devotional or Book Just Google to find all the above. I know it can be hard to slow down enough to be intentional about Christmas, but I promise it's worth the effort. Your Christmas will be more calm and bright!Lord, I lift up this precious mama today. Will you free her up to have a happy Christmas this year? Help her to find the space to do the things that bring her and her family joy. Give her clarity and confidence to make decisions and plans that guide her to a calm and beautiful holiday season. Please Lord, meet this mom right where she is in the middle of her busy life. Show this mama you hear the cries of her heart. In Jesus name amen!
