In "Serving Aces" Alexandra Stevenson and Hugues Laverdière talk Paris Olympics, athletes, controversy - and most importantly, the plight of Coco Gauff and her perceptions about line calls against her.  Alexandra discusses both sides of the controversial call by the chair referee.  Alexandra and Ougi say it's the third time - and the long argument and tears affected Coco's second set.  Alexandra and Ougi felt Coco made the questionable call about race - and they didn't feel race should have been brought into the conversation - this time.  Coco told the supervisor, Claire Wood, that it's about her being cheated - and she said the same thing happened to Serena.  Was Coco correct that the refs are going against her in major events?  Alexandra and Ougi don't think so.  But, they agree there should be electronic line calling at all events - and video replay like the big sports.

Aniesa is joined my music therapist Claire Wood in today's episode of The Sensational Kids Show. They discuss how music can help with multiple learning difficulties, why psychodynamic and neurologic therapy is helping people of all ages and why child-led sessions can empower children.     KEY TAKEAWAYS  Music and psychodynamic therapy has always been used to support adults, young people and children with their general development, their movements and overall communication skills.     Neurologic music therapy is evidence-based therapy looking at the science of brain development and the effect that music can have on the brain.    Music is a unique art form and therapy mirrors lots of early bonding experiences of parent and child. Music forms the building blocks of communication and creates emotional regulation through co-regulation.    Music is multisensory and can engage children with disabilities in a much more meaningful way than conversation.   Professionals need to be as child-led as possible in terms of participation, co-production and thinking about what they want from the session, it can be really empowering and motivating.   BEST MOMENTS  “I'm quite eclectic, I mix and match my approach depending on what the children and young people need.” “There's huge amounts of publicity around the positive effect music can have on dementia care.” “Being with someone in music is an easier way to express themselves.”   CONTACT METHODwww.instagram.com/aniesabblore/           www.instagram.com/sensationalkidstherapyuk/    www.facebook.com/sensationalkidslondon ABOUT THE HOST Aniesa completed her degree in Occupational Therapy at the University of Stellenbosch, in South Africa. She has since been focusing on pediatrics and sensory processing and integration. She has worked across a range of pediatric fields and has extensive experience in autism, specific learning difficulties, as well as anxiety and emotional regulation.  Aniesa has one teenage son with autism, and one with sensory difficulties. She herself was diagnosed at a late age as having ADHD and has found that understanding her neurodivergence has led to a greater connection with children and their parents. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It’s Friday the 12th of February. Welcome to Porty News. In case you didn’t know, today is the Chinese New Year (Happy New Year or shin nee-an kwai le with apologies for the pronunciation) and this is the year of the ox. It’s a celebration we’ve been invited to share many times in the past. However, we were rather disturbed to learn that the Police here in Scotland have been increasingly concerned about an increase in anti-Chinese sentiment - and harassment in various forms, so much so that they’ve made a video for the Chinese community here giving advice on, not just reporting any abuse, but also taking steps to protect any Chinese businesses which usually close for an extended period at this time of year. We feel really sad they’ve felt the need to do so! A final thought about the weather – as the Met Office tells us it’s going to start getting warner within the next few days. It was very cold and frosty again last night – and there are a couple of things you need to remember if going out in your car. Yesterday, we found that our own car was covered in ice and snow which meant clearing all of that from not just the windscreen but the bonnet and roof as well (it’s a legal requirement) as is making sure your windscreen is clear so you can see cyclists and pedestrians. Police Scotland have stopped local drivers and reported them with dangerous driving just because they hadn’t made sure they could see out of the car’s windows! Finally, it’s Valentine’s Day this weekend and, to mark the occasion, the Porty Playwright, Claire Wood, has come with up a seasonal online play. Her company, Production Lines, will bring you Love Roulette, the story of a gameshow where you get to choose who lives happily ever after. We’ll be hearing more about it on tomorrow’s Porty Podcast, but let’s end today’s bulletin with a word from one of the characters Dion, the nation's favourite host (according to him): Hmmm. The play Roulette is free but ticketed which you can get from Eventbrite; a link is in the transcript as usual https://bit.ly/3aXt2eg That’s it from me for today. Have a lovely weekend!

In this podcast we speak with Prof Volker Straub about Testosterone, which is sometimes given to patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) who take steroids. Steroids are part of the recognised standard of care in treating Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). But long-term use of steroids causes a number of side effects including delayed puberty. Testosterone is sometimes given to make boys begin going through puberty. There is a clinical trial running at the John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre (JWMDRC), led by Prof Volker Straub and Dr Claire Wood, treating 15 adolescents with DMD with testosterone to induce puberty. As well as looking at the effect of testosterone on pubertal development, growth, muscle strength and function, bone mineral density and body composition, the trial is looking at the mood, quality of life and well-being of patients to assess their satisfaction with the benefits of the treatment compared to the side effects. Duchenne UK has granted £228,562.51 to pay for the extension study of this trial to look at the longer term effects of testosterone treatment following earlier treatment to induce puberty. The extension study will investigate whether testosterone treatment to induce puberty will be enough to support long term testosterone production, or whether further treatment with testosterone is needed for patients on long-term steroids to keep producing testosterone, even if puberty was successfully induced.

In this raw interview, Claire Wood shares her story that she recounts in her book: Mission Ready Marriage: My Life as An Active Duty Wife. Claire could not be more vulnerable as she shares the anxiety of leaving everything and everyone she knew to start a new adventure with her husband as an Army Wife. Deployment was tough, but reintegration was tougher. Many of us wish we had the guts to be as honest as Claire is as she shares her confusion with wanting to be reunited with her soldier, but struggling with the independence required by spouses during deployment. In Claire's fantastic book, she not only tells her personal story, but includes reflections on what she and her husband needed and how God has brought purpose out of her challenges and victories. Since retiring from politics in 2012, former Greens leader Bob Brown has continued to offer sharp perspectives on issues of national debate. After giving the closing address at the Canberra Writers' Festival at the weekend, Brown tells Michelle Grattan that Malcolm Turnbull should have “stood up to the right wing” of his party at the end of 2015. “We now have a reactionary and conservative government. I don't think that's where Malcolm Turnbull wants to be. I think he would prefer to be a Bob Menzies, and his time's running out. “He either will stand up to that power base of right-wing reactionaries and conservatives, or he'll be another prime minister who failed to reach their promise, and Australia deserves a very progressive and liberal-minded leader. “Turnbull's got it in him, but one wonders if he's had the life experience to be able to say: ‘Well, I'm not going to be dictated to'. It's pretty late in the piece. ‘I'm not going to be dictated by these right wingers. I will stand up to them and if I lose out as a result of that at least I've tried.',“ he says. In the wake of a Greens portfolio reshuffle last week, Brown pays tribute to Sarah Hanson-Young's period as the party's immigration spokesperson. “I think she's helped move this nation from feeling ‘oh, you know let's forget about those people' to saying ‘no, we can't. They're under our care.' “I was sorry to see her move because she's done such a fine job in that portfolio. On the other hand I think it's a very, very daunting job. You know, you are dealing with the agony and suffering of men, women and children and she's been doing that for years. So in a way it might end up being a hidden blessing. “I think it'll free her a little. You know, I just think it's a harrowing job,” he says.
