The evolution of representation of queer characters in mainstream superhero comics is something that entire books can, and should, be written about. So I'm not going to wax rhapsodic about all the changes here, but it's June and thus Pride Month, and so we're back with queer Bat characters. First we wrap up Greg Rucka's run on Batwoman, next we see the first HarlIvy wedding (in the Injustice Universe of all places) and we read one of the DC Pride anthologies, the one that includes the brilliant story written by the one true voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy. This week on The Hung Up Podcast, Eric is joined by the hilarious and unapologetically insightful XD—podcaster, award winning producer, and cultural critic—for a sharp and hilarious conversation that spans the spectrum of Black queer experience. From the surge of ICE raids and public protests to the return of Noah's Arc, we dive deep into the state of (Black) Pride Month, the evolution of the DL identity, the TS Madison and Nene Leaks viral clip and why Khia and JT's moment at DC Pride had everybody talking. It's Black, it's Queer, it's real—and it's definitely not your average Pride episode.

It's week two of my Pride 2025 Feature and this week I'm so excited to get to hang out with two of my favorite people in comics and returning guests, Josh Trujillo and GLAAD Nominated Jude Doyle. Josh and Jude have multiple projects in the new DC Pride Special, now in it's fifth year, including one developing new DC trans character Ethan Rivera. I've already picked it up and found this new formatting where there's a common narrative thread that connects all the stories incredibly powerful. We also get to talk about one of my new favorite characters the snarky Blue Snowman and how things are looking representationally with queer characters and creators in the medium. Josh's Website Josh on BlueSky Jude's Website Jude on BlueSky DC PRIDE SPECIAL 2025 From the publisher DC Pride 2025 brings DC's heroes together when a century-old tavern, the center of queer life in Gotham City, unexpectedly announces its imminent closure. It's a huge loss to the community, and generations of patrons return to pay respects to a space they've endowed with entire lifetimes of memories, wishes and dreams—including Alan Scott, the Green Lantern. Alan returns, for one last time, to the place he fell for his first love, Johnny Ladd, to touch the wall on which they carved the symbol of their love, to remember the days before everything went to hell for them...and to say goodbye. But love is a kind of magic, and, in Alan's experience, magic can take on a life of its own. Before anyone knows it's happening, heroes, villains, and civilians alike from across the DCU with powerful ties to this mysterious place—the Question, Midnighter and Apollo, Harley Quinn, Green Lantern Jo Mullein, Bunker, Connor Hawke, and Blue Snowman among them—find themselves spirited away to strange, alternate worlds where everything they ever thought they wanted can be theirs…but at what cost? Today we talk about Ghost, who was never really given a civilian identity and might be lying about his backstory, but just suuuuuper hates really rich tech companies. And he's right to do it. On Monday, the National Park Service announced plans to close the Dupont Circle park during this year's Pride celebration. But after overwhelming backlash, they reversed course the very next day—confirming that the park at Dupont Circle would remain open for Pride festivities. It's just one more wrinkle in what's already a complicated Pride season under the current administration. Few people can speak to that better than DC Pride's founder Deacon Maccubbin. He's here to tell us everything that's changed and everything that's stayed the same in the last 50 years of DC Pride. Vote for City Cast DC in Washington City Paper's "Best of DC" roundup! Jace and Rocky breakdown the DC Comics titles for the week of June 4, 2025. It's a great week with DC Pride 2025 telling a complete story rich with history and character. The Atom Project comes to a very satisfying conclusion. Absolute Green Lantern continues to be a bit of a mystery while Batgirl and Birds of Prey are both jam-packed with action. Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong is back and as fun as ever, while the Secret Six delves into the relationship between Deadshot and Catman. The relationship between Lois and Superman is still being fleshed out but it is clear that Lois feels drawn to this young alien and where her loyalties lie will be a big part of the story. Join us to hear all about these books and more!

You stepped in for Tom Taylor on this annual—can you walk us through how that came about? Was this a story you had to write quickly, or did you have some room to breathe and make it your own? 2. The story kicks off with a classic locked-room mystery—an impossible murder in a high-tech safe room. What drew you to that kind of puzzle, and how did you approach building a detective narrative worthy of Batman?3. There's a moment where Batman's costume subtly shifts from black to blue once he's in London. Is that just a visual cue, or is there something more symbolic going on there?4. What's your take on the annual format? Do you see it as a chance to tell something self-contained and weird, or a pressure cooker to do a lot in a single oversized issue?5. You're working with a trio of incredible artists—Stefano Raffaele, John McCrea, and Fico Ossio. How did you decide who handled which parts of the story, and what did each artist bring to the table stylistically?6. This annual flirts with the idea of Batman not just solving crimes but confronting the nature of reality. How far is too far for Batman, in your mind, when it comes to stories that push past the physical world?7. UK mythology and angels? John Dee's magic - Elizabethan 8. Maybe the most important question of them all, what is Batman's favorite tea and how does he take it?

What inspired you to delve into the concept of time's fragility and its impact on everyday life? The anthology format allows for diverse storytelling. How do you approach crafting each issue to ensure it offers a unique yet cohesive experience within the overarching narrative?Ashley, introduced in issue #1, is a relatable character amidst the chaos. Can you share more about her development and the role she plays in grounding the story? Collaborating with artists like Eric Zawadzki brings a distinct visual style to the series. How does his artistic vision complement your storytelling, and what has the collaborative process been like? The series blends various genres and time periods. How do you balance these elements to maintain narrative coherence while keeping readers engaged? In previous discussions, you've mentioned the importance of density in storytelling. How do you ensure that each page is packed with meaningful content without overwhelming the reader? The theme of normalizing chaos is prevalent in the series. Jace and Rocky have a quick chat about the recent Phoenix Fan Fusion Convention and then dive into the DC Comics titles for the week of May 28, 2024. Primer continues to be everything you want in a comic for new and veteran readers of all ages. The Penguin has succeeded in elevating its titular character to new heights in terms of his threat level in Gotham City. Speaking of Gotham, Mark Russell's alternate universe take on Batman in the Dark Age title feels both fresh and classic, with art to match. Finally the DC Pride anthology has some great stories and some others that don't resonate with the guys as much, but the emotional vulnerability, maturity and self-awareness Phil Jimenez brings to his autobiographical story is powerfully touching to say the least.

My friend @ashley.c.dyer (active LDS RM, nurse, author, living in Boston) joins us to talk about her new book called “Women at the Well: Mini Devotionals for Women of Faith” that covers a range of important questions, like: - Am I truly enough just as I am? - Is there a way to make scripture study more fun? - How do I navigate a faith crisis? - What is grace? - Is it possible to share the gospel without feeling awkward? - How do I feel the Lord's love in times of trial? Ashley shares some of her own story growing through “faith transformations” and principles to help others walking this beautiful road. She also talks about her love of and support for our LGBTQ friends including her cousin Matt Easton. She shared her experience visiting Matt before DC Pride and then finding herself in the Grand Marshall car with Matt and feeling the “most unconditional love (she) had ever experienced.” I was deeply moved listening to Ashley—her maturity, her service in our world, her new book, her ability to lift others, and her hope of the future of our Church and world. I encourage everyone to check out Ashley's podcast and her new book. Links: Ashely's IG account @ashley.c.dyer Ashely's new book: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1462145795
