Today's guest is nothing short of iconic—Nicole Maines, the first-ever trans superhero on TV. She made history playing Dreamer on Supergirl, and she's been a trailblazer ever since. Nicole's also a fierce advocate, author of Better Except When It Gets Worse, and a comic book nerd in the best way possible. We dive into her groundbreaking role, the highs and lows of being a visible trans advocate, and the chaos of diving into fandoms like D&D and manga. With her sharp wit, huge heart, and some truly unhinged D&D character ideas, we get deep on representation, resilience, and cutting through toxic positivity. Basically, Nicole is a superhero both on and off the screen.   Connect with Nicole:   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nicoleamaines/  Check out her book: https://www.amazon.com/Gets-Better-Except-When-Worse/dp/0593243129    Connect with Liz:   Website: https://www.listentoliz.com/   TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@listentoliz415 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/listentoliz/ , https://www.instagram.com/coolcoolcool/    For exclusive content, support Liz on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/listentoliz

Host Jason Blitman is joined by trans icon and Supergirl star Nicole Maines talking about her new book It Gets Better… Except When It Gets Worse, Disney movies, and the transformative power of storytelling. Guest Gay Reader Sammy Rae shares her unique reading interests and shares more about the exciting release of her band Sammy Rae and the Friends' first full-length album.Nicole Maines is an award-winning actress, writer, and transgender rights activist. She was the anonymous plaintiff in the Maine Supreme Judicial Court case Doe v. Regional School Unit 26, in which she argued her school district could not deny her access to the female bathroom for being transgender and won, the first such ruling by a state court. That case and her family's story was the focus of Amy Ellis Nutt's bestseller Becoming Nicole. As an actress, Maines played Nia Nal/Dreamer on the CW's hit series Supergirl and Lisa in Showtime's Yellowjackets. For as much as Sammy Rae & The Friends may be a band, this collective of dreamers and artists considers themselves a family first. That all-for-one and one-for-all camaraderie ignites their unforgettable and can't-miss live shows, which serve as a catharsis for both the musicians and their fervent audience. Fronted by singer/songwriter Sammy Rae and honed through years of touring, the group is capable of flourishing in any spotlight thanks to its signature blend of palpable chemistry, deft virtuosity, and vocal fireworks. BOOK CLUB!Use code GAYSREADING at checkout to get first book for only $4 + free shipping! Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast for people who see dead people by people who see dead people. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to talk about why the 2022 (slightly obscure) film Darby and the Dead Should've Been Gay. For anyone unfamiliar with this movie, it not only stars Auli'i Cravalho as Capri (short for Capricorn, the queerest name of all time), but also features a trans cheerleader played by the one and only Nicole Maines! The film centers around main character Darby who thanks to a freak accident is able to see and communicate with dead people. She is a full time Hot Topic gay and afterschool medium who uses her powers to help “deados” move on. Naturally this means she is not exactly a hit with the kids in her high school, especially when it comes to ex-bestie and current super popular cheerleader Capri. But things begin to shift from enemies to lovers when Capri dies by accidental electrocution and turns to Darby for help. In addition to helping Capri, Darby is also getting to know the new kid at school, Alex, who spends pretty much the entire movie attempting to come out to her (as able to see dead people). In the end, Darby and Alex do pair off, mainly because Capri had to move on eventually and felt she could do so after confessing her love for Darby. We debate about whether Alex and Darby are both queer and in a straight-passing relationship with each other or if they are fully bearding.  We know one thing for sure, Darby and the Dead Should've Been Gay.  Follow us on the platform formerly known as Twitter: (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay questions at the end of every episode. You can also join us on Facebook.com/lezhangoutpod and Instagram (@lezhangoutpod). Moving one character from one medium to another is a complex task. Nicole Maines was desperate to see her Dreamer fighting alongside the other DC Comics superheroes. However, when she pitched the idea to the publisher, she didn't expect them to ask her to participate in that process. Quickly, Maines found herself as writer of Dreamer's destiny, and such responsibility was as thrilling as it was daunting. Already, Dreamer has appeared in Superman: Son of Kal-El and the DC crossover event, Lazarus Planet. She's rapidly becoming an essential element within the comics universe. Next year, she'll get some serious space to explore with the original graphic novel Bad Dream: A Dreamer Story, written by Nicole Maines and illustrated by Rye Hickman. At the San Diego Comic-Con International, we sat down with Maines to discuss her hopes and dreams for Dreamer. She reveals the critical advice that fellow comic scribe, Tom Taylor, delivered when her stress levels were high. Nicole Maines also reflects on how moving Dreamer through the comic book medium revealed unique aspects about the character she had not considered previously. Maines has been bitten by the comic book bug. She's here to stay, and she's delighted about the possibilities - for herself and Dreamer.  If you haven't already, listen to Nicole Maines' previous appearance on Comic Book Couples Counseling, talking about Lazarus Planet alongside Mark Waid and Leah Williams.  Remember, you can now pre-order Bad Dream: A Dreamer Story at your local comic book shop. Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

Movies are Gay all month long and today's selection features a squad of lesbian vampires who recruit our transgender protagonist with the goal of obtaining power that they reserve only for the ladies. No vampirism for the dudes out there scaring the hoes. Nuh uh. Who suck the blood from the world? GIRLS! An…interesting flick but muddled in lore with an overarching theme you could come up with after one week of a gender studies class. We're talking about Brad Michael Elmore's modern vampire tale in the 2019 low budget LGBTQ horror, “Bit” starring Nicole Maines. How does it work? How DOESN'T it work? We got some opinions and we can't help but scheme on how we might have approached such a movie. Hear us go on about it and stay with us and embrace the fact that MOVIES ARE GAY. Maine trial lawyers, Jodi Nofsinger and Susan Faunce join Ben and Rahul to talk about how they have joined together to form a powerhouse trial team and recently won a $6.5 million verdict in a malpractice case in Maine.  Jodi and Susan talk about their diverse backgrounds which led them to become trial lawyers and how they have worked together over the years to form one of Maine's most successful trial teams.   About Jodi Nofsinger Attorney Jodi Nofsinger represents people who have been harmed by medical malpractice and those who have suffered serious personal injury. With an educational background in medicine and biology, Jodi is the rare attorney who understands both the law and science of the cases she handles. Since joining Berman & Simmons in 1997, Jodi has earned a reputation as a tenacious and effective advocate for her clients. She is a natural competitor who thrives when representing the underdog and holding the powerful accountable. She is also a trailblazer among Maine's trial lawyers. In 2014, Jodi became only the 22nd trial lawyer in Maine—and only the third woman—inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Fellowship is extended to trial lawyers who are master advocates for their clients, and whose careers are distinguished by the highest standards of ethics and professionalism. Jodi learned about the justice system from her mother, a clerk at a federal courthouse in Rockford, IL. Jodi recalls her mother's compassion for people with disabilities who had come to court seeking benefits that were denied by the government. At an early age, Jodi understood that a lawyer can make all the difference for people who have been wronged. “People put themselves in your hands, often after the worst thing that has ever happened to them, and your job is to get them to the end of their case safely, and with the best result possible,” Jodi says. “As a lawyer, you have the privilege and power to make positive change in people's lives. That is the kind of responsibility that makes you want to do better.” Jodi obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology degree as a pre-med undergraduate. Beginning in high school and continuing until she entered the University of Maine School of Law, she worked in the field of biology, where she conducted research in the areas of heart disease, cellular biology, and genetics. Besides her outstanding record of success in medical malpractice and catastrophic personal injury cases, Jodi is also well known for her work on civil rights cases, such as the groundbreaking lawsuit brought on behalf of transgender high school student Nicole Maines of Orono, ME. Jodi serves on the board of directors for the ACLU of Maine and the Maine Trial Lawyers Association.  About Susan Faunce Since joining Berman & Simmons in 2006, attorney Susan Faunce has represented clients throughout Maine who have been harmed by personal injury and medical negligence. She currently leads the firm's mass tort practice, which involves dangerous drug and medical device litigation, and works on medical malpractice and wrongful death cases. Susan is motivated by compassion for her clients and an interest in medicine. From a young age, Susan knew she wanted to become a lawyer, in hopes of making a significant impact on people's lives. Today she is one of Maine's leading personal injury attorneys and has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers, and Benchmark Litigation. “I was raised by a single mother who spoke limited English and I lived in an underdeveloped country as a young adult,” Susan says. “These experiences have taught me to be courageous, resourceful, and persistent. I understand that every case carries both legal and emotional aspects, and I believe every client should have a strong advocate who will work tirelessly to successfully resolve their case.” Susan is a graduate of Bowdoin College where she majored in Government Studies and Asian Studies. After college she worked as a paralegal on high-profile intellectual property cases at a major Boston law firm. She joined the Peace Corps and served in Morocco, teaching English to local high school students and French to women in the community. Susan chose to return home to Maine and earned her law degree from the University of Maine School of Law. Susan serves as the Androscoggin County representative on the Maine State Bar Association Board of Governors and as President of the Maine Trial Lawyers Association. She is also a board member of the Maine Justice Foundation and the Robbie Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides funding for adaptive equipment and therapies for special needs children.

Nothing has a greater influence over your life than your thoughts; rather they are negative or positive. This is true for Superman, Lex Luthor, Brad Gullickson, Lisa Gullickson, Joshua Williamson, and Jamal Campbell. On this week's podcast, we chat with the two comic creators about Clark Kent's impact on their lives as well as his impact on the greater DC Comics universe. Their Superman #1 hits comic shops this Tuesday, and with it comes an exciting new take on the character and those that flock around him. Williamson and Campbell's narrative positions the Clark Kent/Lex Luthor relationship forward without side-stepping those other supporting roles we adore. The first issue actually opens with Pete Ross's influence on a young Clark and examines how that friendship lingers into Superman's adulthood. How these relations shape each other allows us to consider the power friends and strangers have on us, and beautifully, Williamson and Campbell were willing to go there with us. Our conversation also considers Superman's importance as a cultural icon, and we dig into the difficulty of steering such a symbol. We explore whether there is a romance between Lex Luthor and Clark Kent while teasing out some details as to where Joshua Williamson and Jamal Campbell are possibly pushing their caped crusader. Also, what kind of tunes does Pete Ross place on a mixtape for a young Clark Kent? Williamson has definite opinions. So do we. Keep up to date on all things Joshua Williamson by following him on Twitter, Instagram, and Substack. Follow Jamal Campbell through his Twitter, Instagram, and Website. The latest DC Comics event is here - Lazarus Planet! Spearheaded by Mark Waid and Gene Luen Yang and carried forth by writers like Nicole Maines and Leah Williams, the crossover radically alters DC's science-based and magic-based heroes. Chaos rains, and chaos reigns. Heroes transformed. Secrets revealed. Powers unleashed. As seen in Batman vs. Robin #4, Lazarus Island has exploded. Dangerous, magical chemicals spread across the globe, catastrophically changing the atmosphere and the heroes who fight below it. The DC Comics Universe will never be the same again. And you will absolutely become a fan of Monkey Prince, Dreamer, and Power Girl if you're not already. On this week's episode, we're extremely excited (and we do mean extremely) to have Mark Waid back on the show, this time talking about our favorite father/son caped crusaders, Bruce Wayne and Damian Wayne. We break down where various DC characters fall on the magic/science spectrum and where Mark Waid falls too. We're also thrilled to have Nicole Maines and Leah Williams on the podcast, discussing their contributions to the Lazarus Planet: Assualt on Krypton one-shot. The book establishes a new world order for their characters, Dreamer and Power Girl. Folks who will become increasingly essential in the wake of the Lazarus Island eruption. Maines and Williams also consider their relationship with science and magic and how it informs their roles as creators. Maines obviously has a unique bond with Dreamer, having performed as her on the CW's Supergirl. We chat about that responsibility and why it's important for her to be the character's caretaker in the comics. Lazarus Planet: Assault on Krypton is Leah Williams' introduction to DC Comics work. She's positively giddy about pushing Power Girl through the wringer in the upcoming issues of Action Comics, and she assures us that the Kryptonian's journey begins right here with the Lazarus Island fallout. The changes experienced in the one-shot forever mutate our understanding of Power Girl; she's not just a fringe universe Supergirl.  Both Lazarus Planet: Alpha and Lazarus Planet: Assault on Krypton are currently available wherever fine comics are sold.
