In the second installation of the “Can We Talk” series on communication, Erin and Lawrence are joined by guests, Chauncey Hawkins IV (Guard at Saint Francis Brooklyn) & Richard Oppong (Guard at Mansfield University)! The conversation starts off easily enough, as the four discuss the impact and recent deaths of Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, Georgetown great, John Thompson, and the Portland Trailblazer’s own Clifford Robinson. The conversation quickly heats up as Erin and Lawrence get a fresh perspective from two young Black men on the polarized nation the UNITED STATES HAS BECOME! Erin and Lawrence get Rich & Chauncey’s opinion on whether or not their lives matter and if it makes any sense to try to raise children in this hostile climate. Though the conversation was serious, there were lots of laugh in true Beyond The Journal fashion. Our co-hosts were able to discuss as well as give the young men perspective on communication, partnerships, relationships and dating in the 21st century! This may not have been enough episode for a conversation so powerful! Tune in!! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We started this episode speaking about how the professional leagues had all taken a hiatus late last week to address the social injustice concerns after the Jacob Blake shooting. We were happy to see the NBA take the lead and boycott games and then all of the other North American leagues following suit. The NBA Players Association and the NBA owners have agreed to establish a social justice coalition with representatives from players, coaches and governors. This coalition will be focused on a broad range of issues, including increasing access to voting, promoting civic engagement and advocating for meaningful police and criminal justice reform. We then discussed the unfortunate deaths this weekend of three individuals that had ties to the NBA and the sporting world. We spoke of the shocking news that Chadwick Boseman had died after a 4 year battle with colon cancer. Chad was a huge NBA fan and had relationships with many in the league. He had played a lot of prominent roles like Jackie Robinson in 42, Ernie Davis NFL Hall of Famer in The Express, T'Challa in the Black Panther etc etc. One of the other unfortunate passings this weekend was Clifford Robinson the 18 year veteran of the NBA. "Uncle Cliffy is best known for his time with the Portland Trail Blazers helping lead them to the NBA finals in 90 and 92. Last but not least Lute Olson the long time Hall of Fame college basketball coach just passed away at 85 years old and is most remembered for his 25 year run as Head coach of the Arizona Wildcats. He took over a program at Arizona that was not very good and helped rise it to National prominence. They made 23 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances once he turned the program around. Dozens of NBA players have come from that program and we spoke about quite a few of them. Our conversation ended up turning to discuss the on the court action as the first round was almost wrapped up and the second round was just starting. We finished off our podcast episode looking back at last nights UFC Fight Night Smith Vs Rakic. We brokedown all 10 fights on the card and had a great discussion about all of them. Our conversation ended up turning to discuss the on the court action as the first round was almost wrapped up and the second round was just starting . Enjoy Take care Love Yah Bye for now

This is my final radio conversation with Clifford Robinson from April of 2014 fresh off his appearance on Survivor. He was a great Trail Blazer, tough player, incredible longevity, and a solid teammate. I will miss seeing him at Heron Lakers Golf Course and around town. He will never be forgotten in. Passed away too soon at the age of 53. #RipCity 8-29-20
On the anniversary of Larry Bird's retirement in 1992, we're bringing back an Over & Back Classic episode on the last great game of Bird's career.---Ben Taylor (Backpicks.com) joins Jason Mann to chat about Larry Bird's last great NBA performance, a 49-point triple-double in a 152-148 double OT win over Clyde Drexler and the Blazers, in the latest episode of the Over and Back Classic NBA Podcast. We discuss a thrilling game with two buzzer-beaters from Bird and Kevin Gamble, how rare it is for two teams to score more than 148 points in the same game, time catching up to the Bird-McHale-Parish Celtics, how the early 1990s Blazers are a bit underappreciated, Bird managing to remain great even with major back trouble, and how both teams enjoyed the running game. We also share some thoughts on Terry Porter, Clifford Robinson, Danny Ainge, Reggie Lewis, and a young Rick Fox.We also discuss Ben's recent Top 40 Best Careers in NBA History series (http://www.backpicks.com/2017/12/11/the-backpicks-goat-the-40-best-careers-in-nba-history/): ranking Kobe Bryant outside the top 10, LeBron James vs. Michael Jordan, and Reggie Miller and Patrick Ewing being better than perhaps you remember, and talk about some of his other projects.
