The NBA and NBA Players Association are discussing potentially allowing 18 year olds to enter the NBA Draft beginning in 2024. Jason, Sam, and Donald discuss the ramifications of how that would affect Duke's recruiting and whether it would alleviate the number of players that would leave college early to chase their NBA dreams. After the break, we say goodbye to Jason, but Sam and Donald stick around to discuss the 3-0 Duke Football Team, who pummeled NC A&T over the weekend. They also discuss the upcoming contest against Kansas, who are also 3-0. It has become a fairly significant game as Duke seeks to close out the non-conference portion of their schedule undefeated. Finally, the Point Gawd is once again a WNBA champion! Chelsea Gray won another ring as the Las Vegas Aces won their first title. In the process. Gray was named WNBA Finals MVP. About Ken Ungar Ken Ungar is a sponsorship marketing consultant, as well as an attorney with certifications including Player Contract Advisor from the NFL Players Association and Professional Certified Marketer from the American Marketing Association. Luckily Ken has a book for us to help remedy that. In Sponsorship Strategy, Ken wanted to provide tools and best practices for brands looking to grow through sponsorship. “You have to start at the customer demographic. Ask yourself, do you see your customers in the audience of XYZ event?” The biggest mistakes to avoid in sponsorship. Ken detailed some of the biggest traps in sponsorship strategy: Mismatch between sponsor and the audience. Paying so much for the sponsorship itself you don't have anything left to leverage the sponsorship through additional supporting promotion. Not starting with the end in mind—what will success look like? How will you measure that success? Personal branding for athletes. As a sponsorship consultant to numerous professional athletes, Ken shared how these brands are developed and cultivated. “Many athletes think that the only brand they have is their performance brand—what they do on the field. That's only part of it.” Ken shared how their work helps athletes develop their brand purpose. What brand has made Ken smile recently? “In full disclosure it's (client) Acura,” Ken shared, detailing their recent anime short film telling a story about racing. “I kept begging them to make a feature-length movie!” Always leave the audience wanting more! Full show notes here on chrismcgrory.net Today we have Buddy Scott, a junior setter on the Harvard mens volleyball team from Honolulu, Hawaii. Off the court, Buddy is dedicated to all things sports analytics and the NBA. He's president of the Harvard Sports Analysis Collective - a club that takes statistical tools to help answer interesting questions in the world of sports and even partners with professional teams to work on projects. On top of that and his classwork, Buddy is an intern with the NBA Players Association on the basketball related income team - a role he secured largely by showing his dedication with side projects that helped him become a quasi-subject matter expert in the NBA Salary Cap. So, that might all sound boring to you. Fair. No worries. But before you click off - I want to say this conversation was particularly enjoyable for me, who is admittedly not especially interested in sports analytics, because the tactics Buddy has used are so generalizable to other domains. Let me explain... We talk about shooting for lofty career goals like being an NBA executive - and how Buddy thinks about setting himself apart through work samples and tactics to constantly learn. So I'd challenge you to try to think of ways you might be able to tackle a project of your own to #1) learn about your interest and #2) signal that you take your interest seriously. Additionally, we talk about the mistakes and lessons learned from networking the wrong way - broadly applicable to all. And finally we talk about him - his favorite books and podcasts, the daily ritual he has with his grandmother, and advice to a younger self about how much more there is to college then your sport - which especially resonated with me. Please enjoy.

We started this episode speaking about how the professional leagues had all taken a hiatus late last week to address the social injustice concerns after the Jacob Blake shooting. We were happy to see the NBA take the lead and boycott games and then all of the other North American leagues following suit. The NBA Players Association and the NBA owners have agreed to establish a Social Justice Coalition with representatives from players, coaches and governors. This coalition will be focused on a broad range of issues, including increasing access to voting, promoting civic engagement and advocating for meaningful police and criminal justice reform. We then discussed the unfortunate deaths this weekend of three individuals that had ties to the NBA and the sporting world. We spoke of the shocking news that Chadwick Boseman had died after a 4 year battle with colon cancer. Chad was a huge NBA fan and had relationships with many in the league. He had played a lot of prominent roles like Jackie Robinson in 42, Ernie Davis NFL Hall of Famer in The Express, T'Challa in the Black Panther etc etc. One of the other unfortunate passings this weekend was Clifford Robinson the 18 year veteran of the NBA. "Uncle Cliffy is best known for his time with the Portland Trail Blazers helping lead them to the NBA finals in 90 and 92. Last but not least Lute Olson the long time Hall of Fame college basketball coach just passed away at 85 years old and is most remembered for his 25 year run as Head coach of the Arizona Wildcats. He took over a program at Arizona that was not very good and helped rise it to National prominence. They made 23 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances once he turned the program around. Next, the first Bluetooth “exposure-notification” app has launched in Virginia and it's called Covidwise. The app uses Bluetooth chirps to detect if you have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive. While it is very easy to use, for it to really be effective, it needs widespread adoption. Geoffrey Fowler, tech columnist at the Washington Post, joins us this useful app with little privacy risk. Michael Curry, who is on an incredibly short list of people who have the list of accomplishments in professional basketball that he does, joins PO:D to share his journey through the sport.  From a successful playing career, to serving as President of the NBA Players Association, to working 2 years with Commissioner David Stern in the NBA Basketball Ops offices, to being a Head Coach in the NBA and leading the Pistons to the NBA Playoffs, to serving as Associate Head Coach to Doug Collins and the Philadelphia 76ers for 4 successful seasons, to being Head Coach of Florida Atlantic in college, MC has done it all...INCREDIBLY WELL.His 15 year professional playing career, which started with his first four years playing in Europe (Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain and France) and multiple minor leagues in the States, saw him play his final 11 years in the NBA, the majority of which with the successful Pistons teams.  He served as President of the NBA Players Association from 2000-2004, and helped negotiate a multi-billion dollar Collective Bargaining Agreement.  We spend a great deal of time visiting about his years working for the late David Stern in the NBA Basketball Operations in New York City, where he was instrumental in bridging the D-League and NBA together and laying the foundation for what has now become G-League and a real minor league system for teams.  Great stories for coaches and parents on what to focus on with your young players and lessons learned from a journey through the sport.

Mo Evans started “bucking the system” at a young age, and continues to do so today. In 2001 Mo left college, declared for the NBA draft and hosted a party on draft night, which seemed reasonable considering he was projected to go between 15th and 25th in the first round. But things didn’t go as projected when his name wasn’t called that night. That didn’t stop Mo from working his way into a one-year deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves, dominating in Europe for a couple of years and then returning to the NBA for a decade. Mo served as Vice-President of the NBA Players’ Association and explains his role in the 2011 lock-out, as well as the “business” of (NBA) basketball.Thank you Andy Kriegh for the introduction. Honorable Mention All-American (1983) and NBA veteran, Roy Hinson. Roy Hinson calls himself a “late bloomer”. His underlying talent – matched with his height – didn’t lay dormant for long. As a senior, his sudden impact on the hardwood helped steer Franklin Township High School to a 25-2 senior season, culminating in the Sectional Championship Game. Roy details the decision making behind his choice to attend Rutgers University, where he became a standout and future Hall of Fame player. Not only did Roy make post-season tournaments in his junior and senior seasons, he also had the opportunity to fly to Europe, twice, representing Team USA (1981 World University Games) and an All-Star squad (1982 National Invitational Tournament tour). Our conversation covers a wide range of topics. We discuss Roy’s early years in the NBA, his appearance in the 1986 Slam Dunk Contest, his trade to Philadelphia – and later, New Jersey, his home state – and the injury concerns that ultimately forced him into an early retirement. The conversation concludes with discussion about Roy’s role at the NBA Players Association, the 2018 NBA All-Star Weekend / Legends Brunch and terrific insight into the reasoning behind the jersey numbers that Roy wore throughout his career.
