When Zach Posner was last on this podcast, it was 2021 and he was less than a year into having cofounded The LegalTech Fund, the first venture capital firm to be laser-focused on law and legal technology. Since then, his firm, of which he is managing director, has gone on to build up a portfolio of more than 60 legal tech companies in which it invests. His firm has also launched his own conference, the TLTF Summit, which will convene for the third straight year starting Dec. 4 in Key Biscayne, Fla. After attending the first summit, LawNext host Bob Ambrogi wrote in his review, “It was a superlative conference – one like no other conference in legal tech.” We've been wanting to get Zach back on this podcast for an update, and as it happens, he was in attendance at the recent Clio Cloud Conference, where we were set up with my mics and recording equipment. So Zach and Bob sat down for this impromptu conversation about his firm, his conference, and his thoughts on the legal tech landscape. At the recent Clio Cloud Conference in Austin, Texas, Clio released its ninth annual Legal Trends Report, a report that uses both survey responses and anonymized data from Clio users to paint a picture of key trends in law practice and legal technology. This year's report has some intriguing findings on lawyers' adoption of AI and the types of tasks within a law office that could be automated using AI.The survey also looks at trends in hourly and flat fee billing, and includes the results of a “secret shopper” study of lawyers' responses (or, more accurately, non-responses) to inquiries from potential clients. To discuss all of this and more, Joshua Lenon, Clio's lawyer in residence and one of the principal authors of the report, sat down live with LawNext host Bob Ambrogi during the conference. Here is their conversation. Note that we have already posted two other LawNExt episodes recorded live at ClioCon, one with Clio's founder and CEO Jack Newton, and another with what we called the “Clio Power Trio” of Clio's COO Ronnie Gurion, CFO Curt Sigfstead, and board member and investor Mark Britton. At the conference, Clio launched Clio Duo, the generative AI legal assistant integrated into Clio's flagship product, Clio Manage. In a broad-ranging conversation, Newton also shares his thoughts on the law practice management landscape, Clio's expansion into the mid-firm market, and the greater integration of fintech applications in legal. Something I see with my lawyer clients is that they have so many different things on their plate that each piece of work looks like an object, like a static thing that we need to deal with, as opposed to a dynamic part of a bigger process. When you are overloaded, that is totally natural. But this phenomenon points to the importance of seeing work as flow.Tune in this week to discover a helpful tool to help you get work flowing more smoothly and predictably through your law practice. You'll learn how to break down your workflow into its component parts so you can identify bottlenecks, streamline processes, and keep work moving smoothly through your law practice. For full show notes, transcript, and more information, visit: https://www.agileattorney.com/37Catch me at the Clio Cloud Conference 2024, Tuesday, October 8th at 3pm (Discount code: ACTFAST): https://cliocloudconference.com/
Adding capacity to your law practice, whether through hiring new team members, outsourcing work, or using AI to help you with certain tasks does not always add up to overall workflow improvement. This can be really frustrating for law firm owners because you've spent time and money on these solutions, only for the work to continue getting stuck in workflow bottlenecks.Melissa Shanahan and Ben Hudson join me today to discuss what changes when you shift your focus from resource efficiency to flow efficiency, and why sometimes the key to increasing capacity is actually doing less. Ben shares his insights on using data to inform hiring decisions, improving client perception, and defining productivity in a way that aligns with his goals, and we dive deep into the tools and strategies that make a difference. For full show notes, transcript, and more information, visit: https://www.agileattorney.com/36Catch me at the Clio Cloud Conference 2024, Tuesday, October 8th at 3pm (Discount code: ACTFAST): https://cliocloudconference.com/
On this episode of LawNext: An interview recorded live with Erika Harold, executive director of the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism, an organization charged with working to enhance civility and professionalism and to eliminate bias within the legal profession. A former litigator, Harold was named executive director in April 2022, to succeed retiring executive director Jayne Reardon, who has also been a guest on this podcast. A nationally recognized advocate of bullying prevention efforts, Harold led the commission this summer in launching a statewide initiative to assess the prevalence and impact of bullying in the legal profession and recommend best practices for preventing it. Erika is also a former Miss America – the sixth Black woman ever to hold that title – and, as you'll hear, she entered that competition to help fund her education at Harvard Law School, from which she graduated debt free. In 2014, she ran in the Republican primary for Congress to represent Illinois's 13th congressional district. In 2018, she was the Republican candidate for Illinois attorney general. LawNext host Bob Ambrogi had the opportunity to sit down live with Harold to record this conversation during the Clio Cloud Conference in Nashville in October. On today'sLawNext, it's a Clio double header, featuring two separate interviews with two of Clio's top product-focused executives – one with Jonathan Watson, its chief technology officer, and the other with Hemant Kashyap, chief product officer – both recorded live at the Clio Cloud Conference in Nashville in October. Even though I interviewed Watson and Kashyap separately, their roles at Clio are intertwined. As CTO, Watson was previously responsible for both technology and product. That changed last June, when Kashyap joined the company as its first chief product officer. Now, they tell me, they often work as partners on developing products and delivering them to Clio's customers. At the conference, Clio introduced an array of major new products and product updates, in what it called its most expansive product update ever in its 15-year history. These included Clio Duo, a generative artificial intelligence tool that will be built natively into all Clio products starting in 2024; a personal injury add-on for Clio offering a suite of features for PI lawyers; and Clio File, an electronic court filing and service feature built directly in Clio Manage, making it the first law practice management platform to directly incorporate e-filing. In both of today's interviews, we talk about those new products and others, as well as the company's longer-term product roadmap. Both Watson and Kashyapp also share their thoughts on generative AI and its potential impact on legal technology and legal practice. On Oct. 9, during the Clio Cloud Conference in Nashville, the law practice management company Clio released the 2023 edition of its annual Legal Trends Report. Since it was first published in 2016, the report has established itself as a benchmark of the state of law practice and technology adoption among smaller law firms. Among the findings in this year's report were two pieces of particularly good news: Law firms have seen a remarkable increase in productivity in the years since that first report came out in 2016, and legal professionals are actively embracing technology to boost their efficiency and performance. This year's report also introduces a new metric for measuring a law firm's financial health: Lockup. With much to unpack from this year's Legal Trends Report, LawNext host Bob Ambrogi sat down with Joshua Lenon, lawyer in residence at Clio and one of the principal members of the team that develops the report, to get all the details. They spoke in a live interview recorded during the Clio conference. Thank You To Our Sponsors This episode of LawNext is generously made possible by our sponsors. This week, LawNext veers slightly off-topic for a conversation about wrongful convictions. But, as you'll hear from our guests, there is a legal tech angle, even to this. At the recent Clio Cloud Conference, LawNext host Bob Ambrogi had the opportunity to sit down for a live conversation with one of the keynote speakers, Brian Banks, whose aspirations for a career in the NFL were sidetracked when, at age 16, he was falsely accused of sexual assault, resulting in his accepting a plea bargain that put him in prison for five years. It was an experience that has made Banks a powerful advocate for criminal justice reform. Joining Banks for that conversation was Michael Semanchik, the lawyer who helped clear Banks' name while working as managing attorney of the California Innocence Project. Recently, Semanchik launched a new project, The Innocence Center, where he is executive director. He also hosts one of the best new podcasts of 2023, the soon-to-be-renamed California Innocence Center Podcast. For Banks, there was a happy ending to the story, in that he did clear his name and he even got to play in the NFL. But wrongful convictions continue to plague the criminal justice system. Today we'll hear Banks' story and explore what the system can do to keep other innocent people out of prison. In his keynote address at the recently concluded 2023 Clio Cloud Conference, Jack Newton, the founder and CEO of Clio, said that we are at a time in the legal industry when leveraging technology is more important for lawyers than ever before. Technology, he said, enables lawyers to amplify their impact, and when they do that, they can achieve exponential outcomes. This was the 11th year of the Clio Cloud Conference, and the 15th year in business for the company that produces it. In a recent post about the conference, LawNext host Bob Ambrogi wrote that Clio has grown over the years to become one of the largest and most influential companies in legal tech; and that Newton has become somewhat of an industry icon, whose ClioCon keynote is always a seminal event of the conference. A few hours after Newton delivered his keynote, Ambrogi sat down live with Newton for a wide-ranging conversation about the conference, the company, and the state of law practice and the legal profession, including findings from the just-released 2023 edition of the Clio Legal Trends Report. Service of process and other documents is an essential function of law practice – one most lawyers deal with on a regular basis. But for Colorado lawyer Eric Voogt, he saw service of process as a broken system, one in which it could be difficult for an attorney to line up a process server or know the status of the service, and one that he believed was long overdue for a technological upgrade. So Voogt decided to do something about it. In 2016, he founded Proof, an on-demand process serving platform that provides legal professionals with instant access to experienced process servers and real-time tracking from a phone or laptop. Earlier this year, Proof raised $7 million in a Series A funding round, and it says its platform is now used by more than 3,500 law firms and government agencies. In early October, LawNext host Bob Ambrogi interviewed Voogt live at the Clio Cloud Conference in Nashville, where it had just been announced that Proof would be one of three third-party products to be the first to be fully embedded within the Clio law practice management platform. They discuss why Voogt founded the company and how it is disrupting service of process. Thank You To Our Sponsors This episode of LawNext is generously made possible by our sponsors. In this episode of Scalable Law, Caralee shares her experience of attending and exhibiting at the Clio in the Cloud Conference in Nashville. She discusses the conference, what happens there, what some of the topics are, who you can connect with and if it is worth attending even from afar. Clio In The Cloud Conference Wrap Up The 2022 Clio Cloud Conference (ClioCon) was a huge event. There were approx 4000 lawyers at the event in person, with 1,000 attending virtually. The conference was held at Gaylord Grand Ol Operland in Nashville, which is a huge and spectacular hotel. The Clio Cloud Conference was held over several floors of the event centre in the hotel, and the attendees all stayed at the venue as there is not a lot around the hotel itself as it is away from the downtown area in Nashville. To get the event started, the first keynote was from Clio's CEO and Founder, Jack Newton. Jack told the crowd only ten years ago, Clio was a 70-person team. In 2022 the team has grown to 900 employees. There was the exhibit hall that was filled with different products that can support legal teams. Many innovative legal tech products can be used to streamline, systemise and automate law firms. Two Days of Learning How To Grow Your Law Firm Across the two days, there were many masterclasses and workshops. The 2022 Clio in the Cloud agenda was jam-packed with information for law firm owners who want to grow their teams, create efficiencies, market their firms and streamline. Topics ranged from billing practices to social media to automating workflows to creating better client experiences and more. Then, of course, there was the networking, mingling and having fun. Clio in the Cloud put on an unforgettable experience at the Grand Ole Opry for all the attendees. And then there was an after-dark party right in the middle of Broadway in Downtown Nashville. These experiences gave attendees time to mix and get to know each other to make valuable connections in the legal industry, making the event even more worthwhile. In an episode of LawNext recorded in person at the Clio Cloud Conference in Nashville, Clio founder and CEO Jack Newton discusses the “antifragile” law firm, a concept he introduced in his conference keynote — derived from the book, Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder, by Nassim Nicholas Taleb — that certain firms thrive in the face of stressors and adversity, as we saw so clearly during the pandemic. So what is an antifragile law firm and how does a firm become antifragile? Newton and host Bob Ambrogi discuss the concept in greater detail. They also talk about the tenth anniversary of ClioCon, Clio's seventh-annual Legal Trends Report, the competitive landscape for law practice management technology, and the future course of Clio, including whether an IPO is on the horizon.
