In this special episode of LawTech Talks, produced in partnership with Clio and recorded at the Women in Law Forum, we unpack what the rapid adoption and utilisation of new and emerging technologies, like AI, means for lawyers' changing sense of self and their duties to the community. Host Jerome Doraisamy speaks with Clio founder and chief executive Jack Newton and Asia-Pacific general manager Denise Farmer about the lessons and takeaways from 2024 thus far, what these say about where the market is at as we head into 2025, and how Australians are faring relative to global counterparts. The trio also flesh out lawyers' changing attitudes to what constitutes best practice, the growing appreciation for the changing nature of legal practice, an evolving sense of lawyers' duties to those around them, and how the make-up of the legal profession and what a leading lawyer looks like are shifting as a result. At the recent Clio Cloud Conference in Austin, Texas, Clio released its ninth annual Legal Trends Report, a report that uses both survey responses and anonymized data from Clio users to paint a picture of key trends in law practice and legal technology. This year's report has some intriguing findings on lawyers' adoption of AI and the types of tasks within a law office that could be automated using AI.The survey also looks at trends in hourly and flat fee billing, and includes the results of a “secret shopper” study of lawyers' responses (or, more accurately, non-responses) to inquiries from potential clients. To discuss all of this and more, Joshua Lenon, Clio's lawyer in residence and one of the principal authors of the report, sat down live with LawNext host Bob Ambrogi during the conference. Here is their conversation. Note that we have already posted two other LawNExt episodes recorded live at ClioCon, one with Clio's founder and CEO Jack Newton, and another with what we called the “Clio Power Trio” of Clio's COO Ronnie Gurion, CFO Curt Sigfstead, and board member and investor Mark Britton. This has been a significant year for the law practice management company Clio, which in July raised a record-setting $900 million financing round – the largest ever for a legal tech company, and which recently wrapped up its 12th annual Clio Cloud Conference, its largest ever with some 2,600 attendees in person in Austin, Texas, and almost as many attending virtually from all over the globe. At the conference, LawNext host Bob Ambrogi sat down for a live interview with a “Clio power trio” of two of its top executives and a member of its board of directors. They talk about the implications of this raise and its impact on the law practice management landscape. Together for this interview are: Ronnie Gurion, chief operating officer and former GM and global head of Uber for Business. Curt Sigfstead, chief financial officer, responsible for Clio's financial affairs, including finance, accounting, capital, treasury, taxation, and corporate development. Mark Britton, an investor in Clio and member of its board of directors and investor and formerly the founder, chairman and CEO of Avvo. They share their perspectives on the financing and the opportunities it presents. They also discuss why investors are showing greater interest in legal tech, consolidation within the legal tech industry, and the possibility of Clio going public. Note that last week's episode, also recorded live at the conference, featured Jack Newton, Clio's founder and CEO. We've just returned from the Clio Cloud Conference, held this year in Austin, Texas, where, in what has become an annual tradition, LawNext host Bob Ambrogi sat down with Clio founder and CEO Jack Newton for a live interview. At the conference, Clio launched Clio Duo, the generative AI legal assistant integrated into Clio's flagship product, Clio Manage. In this interview, Newton discusses what Duo does and why he believes generative AI is a game-changer for lawyers, more significant even than lawyers' move to the cloud a decade ago, but with parallels to that transition. Newton also talks about findings from Clio's just-released Legal Trends Report on lawyers' adoption of AI and the concerns about AI that are still holding some lawyers back. In a broad-ranging conversation, Newton also shares his thoughts on the law practice management landscape, Clio's expansion into the mid-firm market, and the greater integration of fintech applications in legal. Nineteen-year-old Noah Presgrove lost his life last year on this same weekend. His death remains a mystery to this day. Sadly, some of the people who attended a four-day birthday party with him that weekend aren't being fully transparent as to what happened. One partygoer, Kaden Pressy, was both not inebriated and present when Jack Newton burst into Avery Howard's house to announce that Noah was dead. Kaden noticed something very interesting when he awoke at 2:43 am on Sunday morning and later when Jack made the announcement at 5:15 am. Does Kaden's description tell us who might have been with Noah when he sustained his fatal injuries?#noahpresgrove #noah #jacknewton #oklahoma #comancheoklahoma #mysteriousdeath #truecrimeunsolved #idaho #moscowidaho #kayleegoncalves #madisonmogen #ethanchapin #xanakernodle #moscowstudentmurders #idahostudentmurders #moscowhomicides #truecrimeunsolved #truecrimeunsolvedSupport the show
As I synthesized what Barth and McCollum said, along with input from partygoer Kaden Pressy, I've come to the conclusion that there was likely one catastrophic accident while Noah and others were riding on Jack Newton's Polaris side-by-side UTV. This is when I believe Noah's horrific and fatal injuries occurred. Take a listen as I weave together Barth's, McCollum's and Pressy's input to create a description of what I think (my opinion only) may have occurred.#noahpresgrove #noah #jacknewton #oklahoma #comancheoklahoma #mysteriousdeath #truecrimeunsolved #idaho #moscowidaho #kayleegoncalves #madisonmogen #ethanchapin #xanakernodle #moscowstudentmurders #idahostudentmurders #moscowhomicides #truecrimeunsolved #truecrimeunsolvedSupport the Show.

As the law practice management company Clio today announced a record $900 million funding round, the largest ever for a cloud legal technology company, at a whopping $3 billion valuation, Clio's founder and CEO Jack Newton joins LawNext for an exclusive podcast interview. In a conversation recorded last week, ahead of today's announcement, Newton and host Bob Ambrogi dive deep into this investment and what it means for Clio, its customers, and the legal industry. Newton founded the company 16 years ago and has overseen its growth into a global legal tech powerhouse, with more than 1,100 employees worldwide. “My ambition was always to build this into something that would be a multi-decade company, a hundred-plus year company, and a company that would leave a lasting impact on the legal industry, and a company that would transform the legal industry in a really positive way,” Newton says in the interview. “And what I see this investment round as being is, number one, a huge validation of the success Clio has had in driving that transformation, but more importantly, positioning us to even have a more transformative and more impactful next chapter to our story.” Thank You To Our Sponsors This episode of LawNext is generously made possible by our sponsors. In this episode, Steve Fretzin and Gary Winter discuss:How practicing law is like flying an airplane.Must have technology to run your firm.Evolution of the legal industry.Working remotely and building a strong team. Key Takeaways:If you approach your practice of law as a business, it eases the stress of the business side, because that is what it is.Managing a team in a remote environment is different than when you're in the office. If you give your employees an opportunity to interact, they will do so, even if they aren't actively in the same office. If you're utilizing digital practice management, use the whole thing. Don't be partly on, partly off. "The practice of law is a business. It does need systems, it does need checklists, it does need organization. You have to approach it that way. It actually takes the stress factor down when you do that." — Gary Winter Thank you to our Sponsors!LegalEase Marketing: https://legaleasemarketing.com/Moneypenny: https://www.moneypenny.com/us/Practice Panther: https://www.practicepanther.com/ Episode References: The Client-Centered Law Firm: How to Succeed in an Experience-Driven World by Jack Newton: https://www.amazon.com/Client-Centered-Law-Firm-Succeed-Experience-Driven/dp/1989603327/Slack: https://slack.com/Bonusly: https://bonus.ly/Sweet Process: https://www.sweetprocess.com/Lawmatics: https://www.lawmatics.com/Case Status: https://www.casestatus.com/Clio Legal Trends Report: https://www.clio.com/resources/legal-trends/ Connect with Gary Winter: Website: https://lawvex.com/Email: gary@lawvex.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/garylwinter/Twitter: https://twitter.com/garywinterlaw Connect with Steve Fretzin:LinkedIn: Steve FretzinTwitter: @stevefretzinFacebook: Fretzin, Inc.Website: Fretzin.comEmail: Steve@Fretzin.comBook: Legal Business Development Isn't Rocket Science and more!YouTube: Steve FretzinCall Steve directly at 847-602-6911 Show notes by Podcastologist Chelsea Taylor-Sturkie Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. If you're selling to businesses, you already know... before you publicly launch your product, you'll have to go through a private beta. But beta programs are not all made equal. Many founders go through the motion but get very little out of it. Others, like Jack (the founder/CEO of Clio, a $1.5B start-up) leverage it to get the right customers, helpful feedback, and a successful launch.Who should you let in and how do you get them? How early should you let customers in? When do you know you're ready to launch? Those are a few of the questions Jack answers on the show. If you're going through a beta, this is the episode for you.
In today's episode I speak with Legal Technologist and Clio Founder & CEO Jack Newton. Although not a lawyer himself, Jack is a technologist and entrepreneur who has long been at the forefront of cloud-based legal technology who is recognized as one of the profession's foremost experts on security, ethics, and privacy issues related to lawyers' use of cloud computing. He is also the author of the Client-Centered Law Firm, a bestselling book, dedicated to helping law firms thrive in an experience-driven era. He holds a BS and MS in Computer Science from the University of Alberta (Go Golden Bears and Pandas). In the conversation we discuss the story of how he founded a legal technology company despite not being a lawyer, the importance of learning about the business of law, the reasons why lawyers tend to be slow to change and the value of being OK with rejecting the status quo, finding the latent legal markets of today and tomorrow, reframing clients as customers, and more. This episode is sponsored, edited, and engineered by LawPods, a professional podcast production company for busy attorneys. *** Want to Support the Podcast in 2 minutes or less? In this episode of Scalable Law, Caralee shares her experience of attending and exhibiting at the Clio in the Cloud Conference in Nashville. She discusses the conference, what happens there, what some of the topics are, who you can connect with and if it is worth attending even from afar. Clio In The Cloud Conference Wrap Up The 2022 Clio Cloud Conference (ClioCon) was a huge event. There were approx 4000 lawyers at the event in person, with 1,000 attending virtually. The conference was held at Gaylord Grand Ol Operland in Nashville, which is a huge and spectacular hotel. The Clio Cloud Conference was held over several floors of the event centre in the hotel, and the attendees all stayed at the venue as there is not a lot around the hotel itself as it is away from the downtown area in Nashville. To get the event started, the first keynote was from Clio's CEO and Founder, Jack Newton. Jack told the crowd only ten years ago, Clio was a 70-person team. In 2022 the team has grown to 900 employees. There was the exhibit hall that was filled with different products that can support legal teams. Many innovative legal tech products can be used to streamline, systemise and automate law firms. Two Days of Learning How To Grow Your Law Firm Across the two days, there were many masterclasses and workshops. The 2022 Clio in the Cloud agenda was jam-packed with information for law firm owners who want to grow their teams, create efficiencies, market their firms and streamline. Topics ranged from billing practices to social media to automating workflows to creating better client experiences and more. Then, of course, there was the networking, mingling and having fun. Clio in the Cloud put on an unforgettable experience at the Grand Ole Opry for all the attendees. And then there was an after-dark party right in the middle of Broadway in Downtown Nashville. These experiences gave attendees time to mix and get to know each other to make valuable connections in the legal industry, making the event even more worthwhile. In an episode of LawNext recorded in person at the Clio Cloud Conference in Nashville, Clio founder and CEO Jack Newton discusses the “antifragile” law firm, a concept he introduced in his conference keynote — derived from the book, Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder, by Nassim Nicholas Taleb — that certain firms thrive in the face of stressors and adversity, as we saw so clearly during the pandemic. So what is an antifragile law firm and how does a firm become antifragile? Newton and host Bob Ambrogi discuss the concept in greater detail. They also talk about the tenth anniversary of ClioCon, Clio's seventh-annual Legal Trends Report, the competitive landscape for law practice management technology, and the future course of Clio, including whether an IPO is on the horizon. The Pure Golf 2010 story begins with an end of hockey season trip to Cape Kidnappers, it is here that Michael Goldstein and his mate Jamie Patton cook up a whopper of an Overseas Experience scheme - 'how about we play golf every day for a year and travel around the world while we're at it'. It seemed like a pipedream initially, however, as these two trainee solicitors scratched away at the initial kernel of an idea they received some positive reinforcement from clubs in New Zealand and Australia. The project was green lighted and would eventually include an eye watering volume of bucket list venues throughout NZ, Oz, USA, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UAE. The fratenity of golf worldwide reached out to our two intrepid travellers facilitating private club access, accommodation (sometimes), home cooked meals, clothing and apparel. Along the way they were helped and entertained by characters such as Jack Newton, Phil Tautarangi, Steve Williams, Sean Fitzpatrick, Henrik Stenson, John Ashworth, John Sabino and many more. Over the course of their travels they successfully raised over NZ$40k for the First Tee of New Zealand. This is the ripping story of PureGolf2010, we hope you enjoy the episode.
