Major retailers like Best Buy and Target are phasing out physical media, but Sony's announcement of a new Blu-ray player, the UBP-X700/K, set for release in 2025, signals continued investment in the format. This player, while currently only available in Japan, supports 4K Blu-rays, which are region-free and growing in market share despite the higher cost compared to its predecessor. There is a niche but dedicated community keeping physical media alive, supported by boutique retailers like Criterion Collection and Arrow, which preserve films such as David Lynch's catalog, including the upcoming 4K release of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Mainstream releases still often get physical versions, and affordable options abound online and in thrift stores, offering DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4K discs compatible with modern players. Improved Visual Experience Shrinking bezels by 40% compared to standard displays means the seams between tiles are nearly invisible at normal viewing distances. It's Not All Good News: Cost and Accessibility Manufacturing and Durability Challenges Installation Complexity Wall-Mounting Uncertainties Potential Visual Trade-Offs Cost and Accessibility Complex engineering often leads to high costs. Much like MicroLED TVs, which are expensive due to their manufacturing processes, these bezel-less OLED tiles could follow a similar path. If they hit the market, they might be priced out of reach for the average consumer. Manufacturing and Durability Challenges Shrinking bezels by 40% and tiling multiple panels together sounds impressive, but it raises questions about production complexity and long-term durability. Seamlessly connecting 31.5-inch QD-OLED panels could introduce weak points where the tiles meet, potentially leading to issues like uneven wear, panel misalignment over time, or vulnerability to damage during transport or installation. The "bezel-less" claim might also exaggerate real-world performance if micro-gaps or seams remain faintly visible up close. Installation Complexity While the concept promises to simplify transporting and setting up XXL TVs by breaking them into smaller components, the assembly process could still be a hurdle. Consumers might need precise instructions—or even professional help—to align and connect the tiles perfectly. Google is making headline news once again as it reverses course on a decision to block third-party cookies in its Chrome browser. After years of testing, planning, and delays, Google scrapped a plan to turn off third-party cookie tracking by default like Safari and Firefox already do.In other news, the annual CSS Working Group meeting wrapped up recently, and some of the exciting features the group will be focusing on this year include: the if() statement for conditional styling, cross document view transitions without the need for a JavaScript library, and (perhaps the most anticipated feature) cleaner, easier CSS anchor positioning. Vercel introduces feature flags in Next.js and SvelteKit with Vercel's Flags SDK. Google on April 12 began removing California news websites from some people's search results, a test that acted as a threat should the state Legislature pass a law requiring the search giant to pay media companies for linking to their content. The California Legislature is considering a bill that would require tech giants, like Google, Facebook, and Microsoft, to pay a certain percentage of advertising revenue to media companies for linking to their content. The bill aims to stop the loss of journalism jobs, which have been disappearing rapidly as legacy media companies have struggled to profit in the digital age. Supporters said the legislation would help level the playing field between news publishers and large digital platforms and provide a “lifeline” to local news organizations, which rely heavily on Google's search engine to distribute their content in the digital era. While Google's search engine has become the hub of a digital advertisement empire that generates more than $200 billion annually, news publishers saw their advertising revenues nosedive significantly in the last few decades. Richard Gingras, Google's vice president of news, told state lawmakers that Google already made significant contributions to support local journalism. Google's search engine should be seen as “the largest newsstand on Earth,” where it helps connect users to news websites more than 24 billion times per month. Google's search engine holds an estimated 90% share of the market. “This traffic in turn helps publishers make money by showing ads or attracting new subscribers,” he said, adding that it's estimated that each click on a link from Google is worth 5 cents to 7 cents to a news website. “By helping people find news stories, we help publishers of all sizes grow their audiences at no cost to them. (This bill) would upend that model,” Jaffer Zaidi, Google's vice president for global news partnerships, wrote in the blog post. News publishers would suffer and could lay off more journalists if Google completely blocks content from its search, but experts say Google also would take a financial hit without news content. CSS-in-JS has been around for years now, but have you tried JS-from-CSS? This week we talk about the new alternative trend sweeping through the web development community: writing only CSS to create a fully styled and typed React component. Two early frontrunners in this race are MistCSS and Stylin, and we'll keep an eye out for if this new twist on writing JSX components catches on. AnalogJS, the meta-framework for Angular we covered several months ago, announces release 1.0 with all the bells and whistles we've come to expect from other meta frameworks: Vite integration, filesystem routing, SSR/SSG, server routes, tRPC support, etc. and plans for future integrations with libraries like Astro, Nx, Vitest and Storybook. Chrome officially replaces the First Input Delay (FID) web vital metric with Interaction to Next Paint (INP) to try to do a better job of evaluating a webpage's performance beyond just the first user interaction. Mike Rafi from the Rafi Law Firm joins us for this week’s episode of Sports ‘N Torts. Mike is a lawyer in Atlanta whose practice focuses heavily on representing injured crime victims in severe injury or death cases. Mike describes himself as the lawyer of last resort who gets involved in Code Red type cases. Mike has a unique background by way of working in the news industry prior to attending Law School. Mike worked for Fox News in New York and Cox Broadcasting in DC and he shares the jobs he held and how the news industry work. Mike also explains how those jobs helped prepare him for being a lawyer and presenting ‘stories’ to juries. Mike began his career working in Big Law and the lessons he learned from that job helped him launch his own firm – which he takes pride in running his firm the way he wants and what fits for his lifestyle. Mike has had some incredible results and verdicts and he shares his approach to litigation, discovery and trial. Of course we talk about his marketing approaches and how to be your best at events such as happy hours and cocktail parties. Outside of the office, Mike has been dubbed an “Internet Personality” by Google for his social media presence. Mike explains his approach to social media and the daily videos he posts and how he acquired so many followers. Finally, Mike explains how one of his posts found its way front and center of a recent jury trial. On top of everything else, Mike is a Bitcoin Miner. Get ready for an exciting new episode of our podcast, where Spencer and co-host Jared Bauman of 201 Creative dive deep into the fascinating world of AI, SEO, and website building!   First up on their agenda is Google's policy on AI-generated content and EEAT. At the moment, Google does not distinguish between AI and human-generated content and is not requiring creators to label their content. The hosts talk about why this may be and about how Google has also shifted its position on this topic and will probably continue to do so. They also discuss EEAT and AI, as artificial intelligence-generated content can't claim any kind of experience. As this is a topic that is constantly evolving, they agree to discuss it as changes arise. The next topic Jared and Spencer talk about is OpenAI's potential plans to open an AppStore for ChatGPT. This could include customized AI chatbots, which several companies are already selling. The hosts then briefly talk about how the INP report has now been added to Google Search Console and is now a part of the Core Web Vitals report. GA4 comes up when Jared asks Spencer about his thoughts on the new analytics, and the hosts talk about their experience using it. In the Shiny Object Shenanigans portion of the episode, Spencer talks about his new side project, the WordPress plugin Rank Logic, which helps users track their SEO performance. It's a real game-changer that enables content creators to understand what's working and what's not and tracks changes they make as well as content and author performance. He's even considering incorporating GA4 into the app to make it the data user-friendly. The launch is imminent, so stay tuned! Jared talks about his new side hustle using the Amazon Influencer Program, reporting that in his first month, he will have made around $1000 from 229 videos. He talks about how daily earnings from the program fluctuate a lot and how inspiring it is to be able to build such a lucrative income stream in just one month.   As for Weird Niche Sites, Jared goes first and talks about the site People of Walmart, which features user-generated photos of the people that shop at Walmart. He talks about how a site like this could be created for any number of stores, although he and Spencer point out how normally it's very risky to use the name of a company as part of your domain name. Spencer shares his site, which is Psychic High School, a humorous site. It's updated actively but is a low-traffic site that's ranking for very few keywords. The hosts talked about why the site might have been created and they have a good laugh about the content. You won't want to miss this episode, where the hosts share insight, opinions, and a few surprises along the way!
