Announcement! Please join other podcast listeners for the next online BGTG Mini-Con, scheduled for September 6. I plan to be online from 9am-9pm Pacific time, including Discord for voice & video. The games will mostly be played on BoardgameArena, but adventurous gamers can also use Yucata, Brettspielwelt, Boardgames.io, Steam, apps, or whatever. It's free, and no RSVP or signup is necessary. Opener: Qwinto Closer: The SdJ awards ceremony, which we watched/listened to live on the drive back from a convention Over the years you've heard me talk about a number of game conventions. Usually that's recounting the games I played, and my enthusiasm for them in a 5-star rating. This time, I'm taking more of a meta approach to the topic. Yes, I'm still talking about a convention I went to recently, and some games played there, but half of the episode is about the idea of game conventions in the first place. The different types, which ones I prefer, and so on. Then the second half was recorded at a recent convention, meant to highlight the sort of fun, deep, not-so-serious discussions about the hobby and our shared experience in it. That's a lot of what I enjoy about game conventions--getting to hang out for continuous time with others who are just as geeky as I am about boardgames. I'm among my people! In this particular case, DaveO, Jonathan, Jeff, and SteveV join me to talk about games of designer Rüdiger Dorn. We concentrated on those for an entire day. This prolific designer has titles from 1992 to the present day. He's won the Kennerspiel des Jahres and been nominated for the Spiel des Jahres multiple times. Some of his most famous titles include Istanbul, Goa, Jambo, Traders of Genoa, and Louis XIV...none of which we played! Instead we tabled Dragonheart, Las Vegas Royale, Emerald, Montana, Rune Stones, My Farm Shop, Karuba, Arkadia, Danger 13, Mercado, Karuba the Card Game, and Diamonds Club. That was primarily with two groups playing all day long on two tables. It was the Dornücopia! At the last minute I thought a funny hat would be a great addition to our little event. While I couldn't find a cornucopia hat on short notice, I did find a corn hat. That was great! The winner of a game was crowned with it, and soon enough we were calling that person The Great Dornholio. Now I think all of our future mini-events will benefit from a special hat! -Mark
It's an all new That Real Blind Tech show as fresh off of Convention Season, Allison, Brian, David, and Jeanine sit down to discuss the 2025 Conventions and the Resolutions coming out of them. We kick off the show with a little housekeeping and then Brian discusses his on going battle with his HomePod Mini's. We then discuss Blindness and the Meta Ray Bans going main stream and a great interview on the most recent VergeCast podcast which also includes an interview with friend of the podcast, BE My eyes, Mike Buckley. Ever lose something while traveling? Well, it is probably in Alabama! An idiotic Judge slapped down Click to Cancel. Brian then dives in to a story about his window air conditioner. Brian then discusses the awesome accessible experience he has been having with physical therapy. OKO has been acquired by Synapse, and is once again free to everyone. Open A.I. announced its new version of Operator is coming to do your clicking. Additionally, Open A.I. and most of the A.I. companies seem to be on the way to launching their own browsers. We then get in to our convention coverage as David tells us about his experiences getting to and attending this year's NFB Convention. We then discuss the NFB's 2025 Resolutions. We then get Jeanine's recap of her experience at this year's ACB Conference. We then discuss the ACB 2025 Resolutions. We then move in to some of the new products we have gotten. Brian has preordered the Meta Oakley's, which have yet to arrive. Prime Day came and went and Brian got a Walking Pad, the HyperDrive 6 in 1 with Touch Controls, and the Lisen ultraslim MagSafe Battery. Allison, David, and jeanine then share their recent purchases, but failed to send over the links to them, so they are just awful terrible people. And it's more of Watcha Streaming, Watcha Reading. We kick off the segment discussing the newly announce Big Bang Theory spinoff coming to HBOMax. John and Josh Martin have teamed up for the 2023 city election year to cover Minneapolis DFL conventions in all 13 wards. In this episode we recap what's happened so far (aside from Ward 5, whose convention endorsed incumbent Council Member LaTrisha Vetaw after we recorded). What did we learn in wards 3 and 12? Why was the Ward 5 convention cancelled? Josh takes his pundit hat off in Ward 8 (his home ward). John remixes Mayor Frey's "state of the city" address to a classic song. We ponder crime stats and what Mayor Frey is calling the "downtown rebound." Will Josh take the mayor's advice and return to work in the office downtown on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays? We talk about the what's next for the Charter Commission on government structure (more appointment power for the mayor?). John celebrates the unanimous Planning Commission decision to legalize corner stores. The city's rent stabilization work group produced an unwanted result for rent stabilization opponents, but it did serve as a successful delay tactic. At John's urging, Josh reveals a piece of himself and forms a bond with the audience. Episode 61 of ourMake Dance Fun Podcast is Part 2 of our A Typical Day in our (Studio) Life. In Episode 56, we covered Mondays and Tuesdays, so this episode will detail what Wednesday, Thursday and Friday look like! These last three days of our “normal” work week usually vary more than our Monday and Tuesday schedule, but we do have a general structure, so we are going to do our best to share this with you guys! Wednesday: Confetti Meeting led by Shelley around 9:30a.m. Ellie joins sometimes, tooReserve at least a portion of this day for various Confetti projects, marketing campaigns, creative work, brainstorming, creating presentations, working on Camp Confetti depending on time of yearWork from our office at Annex on any various projects we have going on for Rhythm or Confetti until around 3 or 3:30. Go home at a normal hour on this day and sometimes very early and work from home. This is also a podcast day when time allows! And, we do our podcast recordings from home since we don't have a quiet area at the studio! Thursday:Admin Meeting with Shelley and Krista. We are currently working on putting new systems in place and this is requiring extra time, so we typically meet to work on this and/or anything else that Krista or Shelley needs from us.Occasional marketing meetings as well!Work on our individual to-do lists in BasecampThursday afternoon/evening - sometimes at Annex and most the time we will end the day at Rhythm for costume meetings or rehearsals. During Competition and Convention Season, we hold our Spirit Sesh and final rehearsals at Rhythm on Thursdays (usually a late night during competition season). We spend Thursday nights packing up and loading for the weekend as they almost always start early Friday morning. In theory, this is only once per month, but it feels like it's an every week thing when you are in it! From September - March, we are very busy with our custom costumes from design meetings to searching for fabric, meeting with Beth for our sample meetings and fittings. This takes place on all days, but because Wednesday and Thursday are more flexible, it's most often on those two days! FridaysCatch all/Catch up day. Hold any necessary meetings with Emily as she's at the desk most of the day. It's a day that not too many people are reaching out to us or asking many questions, so we are usually able to get things done.Meet with Ellie, our assistant and project manager Confetti Photo and Video Shoots - If we are having a photo or video shoot, it usually starts mid-late afternoon (when school is out) and goes until we get it done. We almost always start setting up anything we can on Thursday evening, but this has been a challenge that we are still trying to figure out. Crafting and creating wallsObviously, we adjust each day as needed, but that's what our weekdays typically look like. We hope you've found this to be helpful in some way when mapping out your week!Let's Get Social! Opener: Royals Please join us on the Boardgames To Go discord server where you can chat online with other podcast listeners. For boardgame publishers, I believe there's such as thing as "convention season." Of course game conventions happen all over the world, all across the calendar, but for the industry there's a special significance to Gencon in the US, and Spiel in Europe. Add in Origins, UK Games Expo, the Nuremberg Int'l Toy Fair, events in France or Japan...the list goes on & on. Especially for the domestic North American market, however, the summer season of Gencon and Origins means something for sales & product launches. Both events are located in the middle of the US. Designer (and friend!) David Thompson is also located in the middle of the US. I had the great fortune to stay with him for a weekend recently, and besides playing a bunch of games together, we also recorded a podcast. He'd recently been to Gencon & Origins, as well as Ohio's own Buckeye Game Fest. We sat on his back porch during a summer evening and recorded this podcast together. I hope you enjoy the discussion. https://discord.io/BoardgamesToGo Closers: I sat next to a guy on the plane who played a lot of Catan...but only on the app on his smartphone. He told me how the original game has too much luck, how certain Seafarers maps turn it into more of a game of "pure strategy." I showed him Azul on BGA, Iberian Gauge in a photo, and A Few Acres of Snow on Yucata. It's like we were speaking the same language, but different dialects that could barely understand each other! -Mark
