Book Club #130 -  Picnic on Craggy Island - Richard talks to ex radio and TV producer and now successful novelist Lissa Evans about her fab book of reminiscences about working on Father Ted. They discuss what it is that a producer actually does (which is an awful lot as it turns out), how Lissa went from fan girl to producing the second and third series of this iconic series, the perfection of the casting and sometimes unrecognisability of the actors, the tragedy of Dermot Morgan's death the day after the final day of filming, why you should never tell writers not to do something, the relative lack of photos and why it's nice to look back at this series from the distance of three decades.Buy the book here - https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/picnic-on-craggy-island-the-surreal-joys-of-producing-father-ted-lissa-evans/7714680?ean=9781529943795Come to a RHLSTP live! - https://richardherring.com/rhlstp Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. A Pair of Muddy Shoes by Lennox RobinsonLennox Robinson was an Irish author, poet, dramatist and theatre produce who was born in Westgrove, County Cork, Ireland in 1886 the son of a Protestant clergyman, who had previously been a stockbroker. Lennox (fully Esme Stuart Lennox Robinson) was often ill as a child and educated by private tutor and at a Church of Ireland (that is the Protestant Anglican Church) School.  He became interested in drama when he saw a production by W B Yeats and Lady Gregory at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin when he was 21. (If You Appreciate The Work I've Put In Here - You could buy me a coffee at https://ko-fi.com/tonywalker or join as a Patron for exclusive content here: https://www.patreon.com/barcud)His play Cross Roads was produced at the Abbey in 1909 and he became manager there the same year. He resigned in 1914 after a poorly reviewed tour of the USA, but came back in 1919 and was appointed to the theatre's boar din 1923 and served there until his death in 1958. It is said that he was an alcoholic and often depressed.   He was Anglo-Irish but was committed to the Irish nationalist cause (like Yeats and Lady Gregory). His wife's mother was a spiritualist. A Pair of Muddy Shoes is written in a very naturalistic, conversational style which was fun to read and very different from some of the other things we've been reading out recently (Poe, I'm looking at you).  It's all fun, and I like both styles. The story is written from an Irish woman's voice and I read it as an English man. You will know I debate with myself whether I should do accents (which I enjoy) or read a woman 's voice. The second I have few problems with to be honest, the first is more of a problem because though I enjoy doing the accent there is always someone who's ear is so finely tuned that it jars and spoils the story.  So, I decided to do this in my native voice. The story is about a possession but it's unusual and fresh in its setting in rural Ireland (I thought of Craggy Island and the big priests' house looming up from the middle of a bare field, no garden, no path, no nothing leading to it). The spirit of the murderer remains very wicked and his pleasure in the crime infects the shy young woman who is speaking. There is something about weird juxtapositions like the white cat with the narrator's face and then when she goes into the house, the victim says that she has the face of a girl, but the hands of a rough man. And you can join my mailing list and get a  free audiobook: https://bit.ly/dalstonvampireMusic By The Heartwood Institutehttps://bit.ly/somecomeback***Support the show

#fatherted, TheSecondComing / End Times Prophecy & ChristianZionism Beloved sitcom focused on three priests living on Craggy Island, a remote island off the west coast of Ireland. Father Ted Crilly is sent to the island as punishment for using charitable funds for a holiday in Las Vegas, but his true punishment comes in the form of Father Dougal Maguire and Jack Father Ted ran for three series from 1995 to 1998, including a Christmas special. A total of 25 episodes were produced End Times Prophecy #TheSecondComing (sometimes called the Second Advent or the Parousia) is a Christian and Islamic belief regarding the future (or past) return of Jesus after his ascension to heaven about two thousand years ago. The idea is based on messianic prophecies and is part of most Christian eschatologies. Views about the nature of Jesus's Second Coming vary among Christian denominations and among individual Christians, as well as among Muslims. #ChristianZionism is a belief among some Christians that the return of the Jews to the Holy Land and the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948 were in accordance with Bible prophecy. The term began to be used in the mid-20th century, superseding Christian Restorationism.[1][2] However, Christian advocacy grew after the Protestant Reformation in support of the restoration of the Jews and has its roots "in seventeenth century England".[3] Contemporary #Israeli historian Anita Shapira suggests that evangelical Christian Zionists in England of the 1840s "passed this notion on to Jewish circles",[4] while Jewish nationalism in the early 19th century was widely regarded with hostility by British Jews.[5] Some Christian Zionists believe that the gathering of the Jews in Israel is a prerequisite for the Second Coming of Jesus.[3][6] The idea has been common in Protestant circles since the Reformation that Christians should actively support a Jewish return to the Land of Israel, along with the parallel idea that the Jews ought to be encouraged to become Christians as a means of fulfilling Biblical prophecy.[7][8][9][10] --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/vegansteven/message

Comedy writer Graham Linehan joins Episode 67 of The Michael Anthony Show for a fascinating and honest discussion, in which he speaks of how he created the most successful Irish TV Show of all time in 'Father Ted', working with Dermot Morgan, his fight with "ball cancer" and his other successes with shows such as 'The IT Crowd' In recent years, Linehan has also become heavily concerned with the cancel culture that has began to dominate the arts. As a man who has always identified on the left, the fifty one year old who brought Craggy Island from brain to screen, doing so much in helping to modernise Ireland away from the clutches of the Catholic Church, Linehan now finds himself abused online and daily vilified in the media for his stance on women's rights. Although this pursuit is negatively impacting the writer in not just his professional but also personal life, he cannot stand back and let something he deems as detrimental to the future of humanity be not only tolerated, but also encouraged. Whether in agreement or not, like so much of his work in the past, Linehan's take on modern society is undoubtedly compelling. Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and more. If previous listeners on SoundCloud, find it now on other platforms.Support the show (https://open.spotify.com/show/0sP68DtD7qCl4Rs2wGKJD4)

It's our first (and possibly not our last) visit to Craggy Island, as we take apart arguably the finest episode of Father Ted, in which our heroic priests do battle with a randy milkman and a bomb on a milkfloat.
