After President Trump's federalization of DC law enforcement, attention is turning to the root causes of violent crime and the policies needed to restore safety in America's cities. Manhattan Institute's Charles Fain Lehman joins Rep. Crenshaw to break down the data, the myths, and the realities behind the crime waves in DC and other urban areas – from bail reform and policing shortages to homelessness, public disorder, and the social contagion of mass shootings. A hard look at what's working, what isn't, and what it will take to make our communities safe again.   Charles Fain Lehman is a fellow at the Manhattan Institute and senior editor of City Journal. He focuses primarily on the public policy of antisocial behavior, including issues of crime, drugs, and public disorder. Find him on X at @CharlesFLehman and read his research at Manhattan Institute.

“I just fired the head of the FBI. He was crazy, a real nut job.” – President Trump, to Russian officials visiting him in the Oval Office in 2017. James Comey is the former director of the FBI who is disliked by Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in equal measure. His decision to investigate Clinton's personal email server during the 2016 presidential election campaign is viewed by her supporters as a decisive factor in her losing the race to Donald Trump. But Trump is no fan of Comey either. In 2017 a seething President Trump summoned Comey to a meeting in the Oval Office where he pressured him to deny that Trump and his entourage were under investigation for collusion with Russia. Comey refused to give information to Trump and was fired from the FBI in May 2017.  In conversation with acclaimed satirist and screenwriter Armando Iannucci he discusses crime, punishment and accountability at the highest echelons of politics Part two and three of this event are available ad free, for subscribers now. Considered one of the very best in the psychological horror genre the game has a remake coming out which looks promising. SILENT HILL 2 is known for its fog, atmosphere, terrifying sound design, iconic enemies (Pyramid Head), pacing and writing that were way above and beyond back in its initial 2001 release on PlayStation 2.   They also discuss some of the game's influences like the novel Crime & Punishment, Jacob's Ladder and David Lynch films. The Lynch influence is most felt in the voice acting which is wonderfully "off" and cryptic. The Justice Insiders: Giving Outsiders an Insider Perspective on Government

Host Gregg N. Sofer is joined by two special guests: a former federal prosecutor and a person sentenced to federal prison as a result of one of his mortgage fraud investigations. Today's episode kicks off a three-part series titled “Crime & Punishment” that provides a rare, one-of-a-kind look into both sides of a white collar prosecution. This unique, dual-perspective interview follows the timeline of the case, gathering insight from the government's point of view as well as the perspectives of one of the investigation's targets. In this first installment, we cover the early stages of the investigation and surface issues related to how investigations and/or prosecutions unfold, as well as red flags that can signal to both prosecutor and prosecuted that something is amiss.Joe Capone BiographyJoe is an accomplished trial lawyer and former federal prosecutor who spent over two decades working at various posts at Main Justice and in two U.S. Attorney's Offices, and an additional eight years at the Federal Housing Finance Agency's Office of Inspector General. After a brief stint as Assistant Chief Counsel at the Department of Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, Joe retired at the end of 2019.  During his career, Joe handled nearly every type of federal crime—from criminal antitrust conspiracies to guns, drugs, robberies, wildlife and fisheries, corruption, money laundering, and all types of fraud. Joe has taught trial advocacy to attorneys in government and private practice, coached trial competition teams at Georgetown, Tulane, and Loyola Law Schools, and has taught at FBI- and State Department-sponsored training conferences on money laundering and public corruption in Brazil and Moldova.Rashmi Airan BiographyA graduate of Columbia Law School, Rashmi is a “recovering lawyer and investment banker” who was prosecuted for mortgage fraud and served six months in federal prison. Since her release, Rashmi has dedicated herself to using her life experience to provide ethical insights to others, mining her vast legal, business, and community expertise to tell a powerful story of healing, humility, redemption and transformation. Currently, Rashmi is a corporate and motivational speaker who frequently addresses a variety of organizations in connection with accountability, leadership, decision-making and professional ethics.

“If we're going to harm somebody because they've done something wrong, we should do it because we expect good things — better things — to come from it.”— Professor Adam KolberAs humans, we have strong feelings about right and wrong. But our individual opinions regarding what constitutes justice — or even what constitutes a crime, in many cases — may vary. Our culture remains deeply divided on the policies that guide punishment, so how do we determine the best and most ethical courses of action when it comes to maintaining law and order in our society? Should punishment be inflicted to cause harm and suffering, or as a consequence that will produce some good?   This episode of The Living Jewishly Podcasts is an instalment of What Would You Do?, a podcast about ethics in the modern world. This episode's guest is Professor Adam Kolber, who teaches health law, bioethics, criminal law, and neurolaw at Brooklyn Law School.During this conversation, Dr. Elliot Malamet and Professor Kolber dive into the goals and moral basis of punishment, the difference between vengeance and punishment, and how culture and politics affect crime and its institutional consequences.“When you increase amounts of punishment a little bit, it doesn't affect people's behaviour very much… because most people don't think they're going to get caught.”— Professor Adam KolberThis‌ ‌episode discusses:‌ ‌The retributivist approach to punishment v. the consequentialist approach The rationale behind the extremely high levels of crime and incarceration in the United StatesWhat we gain from performing justice and punishment on an institutional rather than individual level — and which types of punishments are most effective ‌  Highlights:‌ ‌00:53  Intro02:42  Adam Kolber & goals of punishment04:46  Vengeance & punishment06:03  Blood avengers v. institutions07:44  Crime in the United States10:39  Crime & culture13:11  Heroes in popular culture 14:40  “Getting away with it”16:12  Effective punishments18:27  Kant's thought experiment22:40  Free will, responsibility & capital punishment27:30  Eye for an eye30:11  Proportionality & drug offences32:27  Atonement34:09  Punitiveness in the digital era38:19  ConclusionLinks:‌ ‌ Kant: The Metaphysics of Morals by Immanuel Kant & Mary J.
